Hi, my name is Katharine Morrow. I am from Eden Prairie, Minnnesota, and I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. I have known I wanted to be a nurse since middle school when I first learned about my mom's health issues. At the time, I began noticing her frequent visits to the doctors and had to deal with her occasional seizures. The situation terrified me, but what scared me more was that it was the first time I had ever seen my mom scared. However, overtime her fear subsided as she got treatment and medications for her various illnesses, but her fear never left me. I had seen my mom at her most vulnerable state and I felt helpless. At that point, I made a promise to myself that I would pursue a career allowing me to help people like my mom. I wanted to be useful, but most importantly, I wanted to bring comfort to my patients like my mom's nurses did for her. Now that I am in nursing school, I see my dream becoming reality.

You enter college anxious, enthralled, and captivated by the excitement of the new scenery. You fall in love with the campus, the social life, the people, but in the background you can faintly hear a siren warning you of the struggles you are about to face. However, you are happy and you are in love so you choose to ignore it.
You choose to keep moving forward without looking back. You are euphoric. All aspects of your life are good. You feel like you are moving 100 miles an hour and that nothing can ruin the happiness you have found here.
But then your schoolwork starts getting more challenging. You stop seeing your friends as much as your life begins to slow down. You feel like you are overwhelmed and slowly loosing air. You feel weak, you feel alone. You’ve hit your first low.
You try to get out of this by acknowledging the problem. You try to fix it but you know that this might be your new reality. You accept defeat but keep trying to do well.
You are now at your breaking point. One more push, one more assignment, one more added stressor, and you will loose it. You want to continue, you want this degree but you do not know how much more you can take. You take a deep breathe.
You try to compose yourself, and you begin to think about all the other students who have been in the same situation. You try to remember that even though you might not have any family to relate to, you are not alone in this situation. You try to think back to the beginning of the year, when you were content. You want to go back, but you know thats not an option. However, you cannot help but think about the time before you felt like this. Before you had met your breaking point, before you had to keep pushing yourself even though you have lost your motivation.
You take another deep breathe. You realize it is time to start fixing the problem. You try to slow down. You try to reassess your goal and reduce your high standards. You begin to realize that it is not all bad. That there are aspects of your life you enjoy and want to continue working towards pursuing. You are starting to find your purpose again.
