Joseph A. Terbrack ALS Memorial Scholarship Fund
ALS, also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a debilitating disease that affects the nervous system and gradually impairs muscle movement and coordination. While I am fortunate enough not to have been directly diagnosed with ALS, it has still had a profound impact on my life. This essay aims to discuss how ALS has affected me personally, emotionally, and socially. First and foremost, ALS has served as a constant reminder of the fragility of life. Witnessing individuals suffering from this disease has made me realize how quickly our physical abilities can be taken away. It has made me appreciate and take advantage of my own health, pushing me to be more proactive in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I have become more conscious of the importance of exercise, healthy eating, and regular check-ups to keep my body functioning optimally. Emotionally, ALS has caused me immense sadness and empathy for those directly affected. Witnessing the gradual loss of independence and mobility in ALS patients has brought tears to my eyes and tugged at my heartstrings. I have developed a deeper appreciation for those who live with ALS and admire their strength and resilience in facing such adversity. This empathy has also led me to consider ways in which I can contribute to ALS research and support organizations, to help alleviate the suffering caused by this disease. Moreover, ALS has had a significant social impact on me. It has made me more mindful of inclusivity and accessibility in public spaces. Simple tasks that most people take for granted, such as navigating stairs or opening doors, can become immensely challenging for individuals with ALS. This awareness has prompted me to advocate for more inclusive designs and infrastructure, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical capabilities, can access and enjoy public spaces. Furthermore, ALS has made me more appreciative of the relationships in my life. Witnessing the impact of the disease on families and loved ones has reinforced the importance of cherishing the time we have together. I have become more intentional in my interactions with family and friends, cherishing every moment and expressing my love and gratitude more frequently. ALS has taught me that life is too short to hold grudges, and the power of love and support is invaluable in times of hardship. In conclusion, ALS has had a profound effect on me, both personally and emotionally. It has reminded me of the fragility of life, increased my empathy and understanding towards those living with ALS, and made me more conscious of inclusivity and accessibility. Additionally, it has reinforced the importance of cherishing the relationships we have and expressing love and support. While I am fortunate not to be directly affected, ALS has taught me invaluable life lessons and shaped my perspective on health, empathy, and gratitude.
