I come from a poor community and was raised by a single mother. As a child, I have lived in many homes and lastly in a homeless shelter before my mother got back on her feet. Throughout high school, I've been involved in sports and academic council. I am a first-generation college student in my family. My mother has always committed to me to stay on top of my duties. No matter how hard we struggled she made me focus on my studies. I am involved on campus and hold several leadership positions in my student organizations. I made the dean's list for 2 semesters in a row and received scholarships for my academics. On my off days, I like to volunteer for food banks and pick up trash off Texas highways. I am majoring in Criminal Justice and minoring in Forensic Science. I chose to major in Criminal Justice because I have always had the motivation to fight for what is right. Growing up I stood up for those who can't protect themselves and projected a strong figure for others. I want to protect the innocent and prosecute in a court of law. As a minority, we are faced with challenges from recent events but also praise for what we do. Although there isn't enough representation of minorities in the local government. As of recently, minorities have taken backlash from racism. We are becoming separated because others' minds are perceived. I want to be the person children of color look up to and realize that they have the potential as well. As a minority, we are capable of accomplishing bigger achievements. I want to create an environment that is more diverse and accepting. After completing my Bachelor's program, I'd like to get back into the workforce and make some progress. I want to educate myself through my experience before going back for my Master's degree. I believe that the local government system is flawed and someone must make some serious changes. In order to do so, I must start from the bottom and work my way up. I have worked in Corrections for 2 years for the state of Texas and learned as an officer what we face on a daily basis. I have also learned what offenders face and how they get mistreated. I have learned the flaws the system has and want to make changes accordingly.
