I am a low income student and I live in the projects in Los Angeles California. I grew up with being very unfamiliar with school and aid I can recieve throughout highschool and college. I personally experienced a lot of trauma when I was young experiencing the separation of my parents. My brother leaving the household for college and seeing my mother struggle everyday to buy food for me and my siblings. There were days at school where I struggled to focus on school and I was no motivated to do good in school because I felt like I wasn’t going to be able to afford college. However I wanted to be part of the a club or team in middle school to stay busy and expand my knowledge. I signed up for a program called music and orchestra and I loved it. I was able to express my feelings through music and through my academics as well. However when it came to club dues it’s was a bit hard to pay them since I had very financial issues. Later in college I am doing well academically but it’s hard sometimes just to focus on academics when I also need to pay for my colleges fees like books, club dues, housing payments and food expenses. My mother does not have a stable job and when it comes to payments and dues it becomes very stressful for me and my parents. In college now I am exposed more to college advice from my counselors and advisors. I have applied to scholarships before but I have not received any aid. It definitely has impacted my college experience because I am unable to afford my books, Pat my housing dorming bill and other expenses like food and clothes. Living with one parent in my household has not been easy but despite having low rescources and aid for school, I have been able to push through and do well academically in college and through my previous years. I agree that I would even be a more successful student if I had the support of aid through college. I strive to become an orthodontist and attend dental school to help everyone I can. I would also like to be able to expand my knowledge through dental school and open other opportunities for me and my future career. At the college where I have attended I’ve been told to look for research opportunities and grasps experience and apply for scholarships in order for a low income student like me to continue being successful through college. I would appreciate it if I were able to recieve this aid as it would increases my chance of becoming a successful student and achieving my dream.
