Women in Tech Scholarship
I'm interested in pursuing a degree in STEM because I love the variety of skills that can be applied in a STEM program or by being well-versed in technology and math. I also enjoy the challenges that I have been presented with in my degree program and collaborations. My interests are in sound design for motion pictures and television shows. This consists of audio recording technology, audio editing technology (including software and hardware), speaker systems and mixing technology, and delivery of large files and projects to a team.
I've learned a ton about the new and existing technolgy like ProTools, Dante, and Adobe programs that I use in class. A day doesn't go by that I'm not using these programs and advancing my skills. Along with the technology I face every day, I also have an interest in physics and mathematics. I considered taking a physics minor, as a way to open up opportunities that align with my interest in acoustics and engineering audio processing technology. Though I chose to maintain my interest in video production as a way to assist my future career ambitions. Learning audio and video technology skills simultaneously go hand in hand, and I stay very updated in up-and-coming technology that makes it easier to understand the science but also to easily be creative! I think that is one of my favorite parts of being in STEM, is the satisfaction of understanding a concept so well that you can begin to experiment, learn more, or be creative in a way that doesn't need to be taught.
Along with my interest in the topics of STEM, the entertainment industry is saturated with male workers. I enjoy the challenge of knowing that there is a stereotype of "mansplaining", when a man assumes a woman doesn't know something and will explain to her unnecessarily. I have faced a few times when I have been ignored or underestimated in problem-solving. I have liked the challenge of growing to speak my mind and be confident in my abilities as I progressed as a STEM major. I hope through my career I can be a part of changing this interaction between the sexes, and in the people I know, I would like to encourage a shared appreciation of all coworkers' minds.
There are countless more reasons that I have pursed a degree in STEM, but I have never doubted by passions and abilities for a second. I feel like my innate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics have aided me well in every aspect of my life and will help me to accomplish great things.
