After earning my first baccalaureate degrees at Miami University of Ohio, I worked with AFS-USA and the State Department in high school student exchange. My interest in international professional endeavors continued when I decided to transition to a translation company. There, I managed an overseas team in Mumbai, India, and worked with various other groups worldwide to translate and publish healthcare materials into over twenty different languages. I was giving back, and it made me tremendously happy. The odd thing was, I did not yet feel whole.
I struggled, honestly, to identify something I wanted to make a career. A "job" would not suffice. Briefly, I worked in PR, a creative avenue I had hoped would be inspiring. Ultimately, it provided the inspiration I never expected when I woke up one morning with a momentous revelation. NURSING. That was it: a career in nursing. At the University of South Alabama, I excelled in coursework to achieve my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and have been a nurse in various capacities for the past nine years: in the ER, critical care, and surgery.
I have witnessed what accidents can do and how a disease (most recently, COVID-19) can wreak havoc on the human body. But more importantly, I have seen how a proactive clinician approach can positively impact a patient’s life. That said, a year and a half ago, I began pursuing my Doctor of Nursing Practice and a supplemental certificate in telehealth at the University of Arizona. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, I will have the opportunity practice the art and science of nursing in an innovative capacity and the devices to effectively advocate for health policy change at the system level.
I am grateful for my ability to connect with people and always identify areas where further reflection or knowledge may bridge gaps in understanding. I have and will continue to positively impact my patient's lives and be a Nurse Practitioner who encourages and motivates individuals, who creates partnerships that empower patients to achieve optimal health according to their goals and unique community influences.
As I look to the future and achieve my Doctor of Nursing Practice in December (2021), I aim to make patient care more effective, successful, and sustainable. My dedication to helping people, like my ambition to learn, will never cease.
