Bio

Hello, my name is Karianne Baldwin and I am currently working on my life goal of becoming an airline pilot. I have recently earned my instrument rating and am working on my commercial pilot license. After earning my commercial and flight instructor license, I plan to work as a flight instructor until I earn enough hours to be an airline pilot. I am extremely passionate about school, sports, and aviation and I do everything I can to be my best in these fields. I am not afraid to try new things, and when I commit myself to something, I go “all in” no matter what it is. Since middle school, I have committed myself to training and competing in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I have now wrestled for six years and practiced jiu-jitsu for seven. Through the highs and lows, they have taught me many things, including how to be hard-working, disciplined, and consistent. The harder I have worked in these sports, the more it has transferred into working hard in school and in other aspects of my life. I am a worthy candidate for this scholarship because I am dedicated in all that I do. I will work hard to reach my career and life goals and will not stop until I accomplish them. Receiving this scholarship would significantly support me in completing my ratings and getting closer to my goals. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Kyle Rairdan Memorial Aviation Scholarship
I am passionate about a career in aviation because I truly love flying and cannot see myself working towards any other career. Flying has become what I look forward to and love most about my life. I discovered my passion for aviation thanks to my father, who fell in love with flying and logged nearly 1,000 flight hours. With his encouragement, I took several flying lessons and loved it, too! During my first flying lesson, the experience was so surreal that I did not imagine becoming a professional pilot. It felt too good to be true! However, as my dad continued to talk to me about studying aviation – and I continued to fly – I eventually knew I could do it. After that realization, I have never looked back and am determined to become a commercial airline pilot. I am currently attending Big Bend Community College’s two-year aviation program. Here, I will earn my private, instrument, commercial, multi-engine, and flight instructor licenses. To continue my career pathway, I then plan to be a flight instructor where I will share my love and knowledge of aviation with my students, while gaining flight experience. When I have earned enough hours to apply for a commercial airline, I will send in my applications. Ultimately, my goal is to become a skilled and accomplished commercial airline captain. Another motivation of mine is to represent and inspire female pilots. My experience in the similarly male-dominated world of wrestling and other combat sports has inspired and equipped me to do just that. I want to mentor female pilots like I have mentored many in athletics and academics. Since middle school, I have committed myself to training and competing in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. I have wrestled for six years and practiced jiu-jitsu for seven. Along with being on the varsity wrestling team, I held the leadership role of team captain for two years, which allowed me to support and mentor my team. Outside of athletics, I was a Peer Tutor in the Special Education Program in high school. This opportunity allowed me to work with and support students who were impacted by a wide range of challenges, from visual impairment to intellectual disabilities such as Down syndrome and autism. Every day I was able to connect with these students and mentor them in life skills, including baking, using money, cleaning dishes, and more. Additionally, I was a member of Link Crew, a program to help incoming freshmen transition to high school. Our goal was to support our assigned group of freshmen throughout the school year and to encourage them to be involved in extracurricular school activities. Furthermore, as a member of the National Honor Society for all four years of high school, I participated in numerous community service roles. I volunteered as a teacher assistant at Maltby Elementary School, a wrestling coach at Valley View Middle School and Ascend Wrestling Academy, an assistant coach at Cascade Jiu-jitsu, and as a helper for the preschool ministry at Canyon Hills Community Church. Currently, when on breaks from college, I volunteer for Maltby Elementary, Glacier Peak High School, and Cascade Jiu-jitsu. I enjoy giving back to the many communities that I myself was a part of as a child. Receiving this scholarship would significantly assist me in my journey to achieving my life goal of becoming a commercial airline pilot. I hope that my determination, dedication, and passion for aviation is clear, and I am grateful for the opportunity this scholarship provides. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I am a student pilot in the Big Bend Community College Flight Program and am working towards my Private Pilot’s license. I have 38.4 hours, have passed my Pre-solo written test, and the Private Pilot’s Airmen’s Knowledge Test. I have made several attempts to solo during my first quarter here, but the attempted flights have been cancelled due to weather. I am looking forward to soloing as soon as the weather permits! I discovered aviation thanks to my father, who used to fly planes and fell in love with aviation. With his encouragement, I took several flying lessons and loved it, too! During my first flying lesson, the experience was so surreal and dreamlike that I did not even imagine becoming a professional pilot. It felt too good to be true! However, while my dad continued to talk to me about studying aviation, and I continued to fly, I eventually knew I could do it. After that realization, I have never looked back and am determined to become a commercial airline pilot. I am currently attending Big Bend Community College in the two-year aviation program. There, I will earn my private, instrument, commercial, and flight instructor licenses. I then plan to be a flight instructor until I earn enough hours to be a commercial airline pilot. During my time as a flight instructor, I hope to share my love and knowledge of aviation with my students, while earning flight hours and experience. I have always enjoyed helping and teaching my fellow classmates in school and my teammates in sports. I believe this pleasure in teaching will transfer well to being a flight instructor. I am passionate about a career in aviation because I truly love flying and cannot see myself working towards any other career. Flying has become one of the things I look forward to and love most about my life. Seeing the world from an airplane is one of the things I appreciate most about flying – there’s nothing else like it. I know this career will be a great fit for me because I enjoy problem solving, learning new things, teamwork, time management, and attention to detail. All of these skills are essential to being a pilot and where I excel. I am excited to improve my abilities throughout my aviation journey and apply my skills to my aviation career. I am a very goal-oriented person, always setting high goals for myself and striving to achieve them. When I set my mind to something, I do everything I can in order to achieve my goal. I have every intention to persevere through any challenges to becoming a commercial airline pilot. One of these challenges is getting the necessary funds to pay for my flight training. With the high costs of flight school, without financial assistance it will be difficult to continue my education and reach my goal of becoming a commercial airline pilot. I hope that my passion and determination is clear to you, and I am very grateful for the opportunity this scholarship provides. Thank you very much for your consideration!

One of my life goals is to become a commercial airline pilot. My father inspired me to pursue this career because he used to fly planes and fell in love with aviation. As a result, I have taken several flying lessons and I love flying! Without this exposure, I never would have thought to attempt to become a pilot. I will achieve this goal by attending Big Bend Community College for their aviation program. Here I will earn all the required pilot licenses, as well as an associate’s degree. I then plan to become a flight instructor until I get enough hours and experience to apply for a commercial airline. I have the determination, drive, and dedication to become a pilot. An example of my perseverance and work ethic is shown through my athletics. Since middle school, I have committed myself to a significant amount of time for training and competing in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I have now wrestled for six years and practiced jiu-jitsu for seven. These sports have made me who I am today. Through the highs and lows, they have taught me many things, including how to be hard-working, disciplined, and a strong leader. I have never worked harder to accomplish anything in my life than I have worked to succeed in these sports. The harder I have worked in these sports, the more it has transferred into working hard in school and in other aspects of my life. These sports have helped me create a better version of myself. When I started, I knew nothing about these sports and now I am a three-time state champion in wrestling and a purple belt in jiu-jitsu, both of which are rare accomplishments. These are just milestones in my progress, but they show my commitment and dedication to something I am passionate about. Wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu have taught me how to be a strong leader. I held the leadership role of team captain for two years for my high school girls wrestling team. This role allowed me to support my team and mentor them. I received the captain’s award my senior year, showing that my leadership qualities stood out among other team captains. I love teaching and helping people with things that I am passionate about, and aviation will be no different. Other leadership roles that helped me grow were being a WEB leader in middle school, and being a Link Crew leader my senior year of high school. As a WEB and Link Crew leader, we met during the summer for leadership training where we were prepared to help incoming students for the upcoming school year. With an assigned group of students, we would meet each month during the first semester of school to check in with them. These programs further taught me how to be an effective and confident leader. With my work ethic, leadership skills, and passion for flying, I know that I can accomplish my goal of becoming a pilot. However, a major challenge that I am working to overcome is getting the money to fund my goals. Due to my huge commitment to sports (including multiple practices and workouts everyday) over the past several years, my opportunity to earn and save money has been extremely limited. Now with the intensive schedule of my aviation program and college classes, my ability to earn money continues to be limited. Financial aid is necessary to help me complete this aviation program and I extremely appreciate your consideration in helping me reach my goals. Thank you very much!

Another goal in aviation of mine is to inspire young girls and women to pursue aviation. There are not many females involved in aviation, so when you meet one who can help guide you, it is very powerful and encouraging. I would love to be a mentor for other females in the future when I am a pilot! I have the determination, drive, and dedication to become a pilot. I am interested in aviation because I love to fly and to travel, thanks to my parents. I plan to attend Big Bend Community College for the two-year aviation program. I then plan to become a flight instructor until I get enough flight hours and experience to be a commercial airline pilot. My father inspired me to achieve these career goals because he used to fly planes and fell in love with aviation. As a result, I have taken several flying lessons and love flying! Without this exposure, I never would have thought to attempt to become a pilot. I am involved with my community in many ways. Since middle school, I have committed myself to training and competing in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I have now wrestled for six years and practiced jiu-jitsu for seven. I have been on the varsity wrestling team for all four years of high school. I am a three-time district champion, three-time regional champion, and three-time state champion. I am also a two-time academic state champion. Along with being on the team, I have held the leadership role of team captain for two years. This role allowed me to support my team and mentor them. I am also involved at my high school community by being a peer tutor in the special education program. Every day, I work closely with these students to help them with life skills like baking, using money, doing laundry, cleaning dishes, and more. I have been a member of National Honor Society for all four years of high school, completing twelve hours of community service each of the first three years, and eighteen hours my senior year. I am in Link Crew, a program to help in-coming freshman transition to high school. We not only meet during the summer, but also meet with our group of freshman each month of the first semester to see if they need help in any way -- and make sure they are staying involved with extra school activities like clubs and sports. Outside of high school, I have volunteered at Maltby Elementary School as teacher assistant, as a wrestling coach at Valley View Middle School, as a coach at Cascade Jiu-jitsu, as a coach at Ascend Wrestling Academy, and as a helper for the preschool program at Canyon Hills Ministry. Specifically, I am most proud of being a volunteer teacher assistant at Maltby Elementary for the Montessori program. I specifically chose this program because, when I was in elementary school, I greatly benefited from being in the Montessori program. My goal was to provide the students with the same benefits that I received from the program, including learning responsibility, organization, creativity, curiosity, and more. I not only worked with the students, but I also helped their teacher with tasks so that she had more time to give the students one-on-one attention.
