I am a student pilot in the Big Bend Community College Flight Program and am working towards my Private Pilot’s license. I have 38.4 hours, have passed my Pre-solo written test, and the Private Pilot’s Airmen’s Knowledge Test. I have made several attempts to solo during my first quarter here, but the attempted flights have been cancelled due to weather. I am looking forward to soloing as soon as the weather permits! I discovered aviation thanks to my father, who used to fly planes and fell in love with aviation. With his encouragement, I took several flying lessons and loved it, too! During my first flying lesson, the experience was so surreal and dreamlike that I did not even imagine becoming a professional pilot. It felt too good to be true! However, while my dad continued to talk to me about studying aviation, and I continued to fly, I eventually knew I could do it. After that realization, I have never looked back and am determined to become a commercial airline pilot. I am currently attending Big Bend Community College in the two-year aviation program. There, I will earn my private, instrument, commercial, and flight instructor licenses. I then plan to be a flight instructor until I earn enough hours to be a commercial airline pilot. During my time as a flight instructor, I hope to share my love and knowledge of aviation with my students, while earning flight hours and experience. I have always enjoyed helping and teaching my fellow classmates in school and my teammates in sports. I believe this pleasure in teaching will transfer well to being a flight instructor. I am passionate about a career in aviation because I truly love flying and cannot see myself working towards any other career. Flying has become one of the things I look forward to and love most about my life. Seeing the world from an airplane is one of the things I appreciate most about flying – there’s nothing else like it. I know this career will be a great fit for me because I enjoy problem solving, learning new things, teamwork, time management, and attention to detail. All of these skills are essential to being a pilot and where I excel. I am excited to improve my abilities throughout my aviation journey and apply my skills to my aviation career. I am a very goal-oriented person, always setting high goals for myself and striving to achieve them. When I set my mind to something, I do everything I can in order to achieve my goal. I have every intention to persevere through any challenges to becoming a commercial airline pilot. One of these challenges is getting the necessary funds to pay for my flight training. With the high costs of flight school, without financial assistance it will be difficult to continue my education and reach my goal of becoming a commercial airline pilot. As a result, I have taken several flying lessons and I love flying! Without this exposure, I never would have thought to attempt to become a pilot. An example of my perseverance and work ethic is shown through my athletics. Since middle school, I have committed myself to a significant amount of time for training and competing in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I have now wrestled for six years and practiced jiu-jitsu for seven. These sports have made me who I am today. Through the highs and lows, they have taught me many things, including how to be hard-working, disciplined, and a strong leader. I have never worked harder to accomplish anything in my life than I have worked to succeed in these sports. The harder I have worked in these sports, the more it has transferred into working hard in school and in other aspects of my life. These sports have helped me create a better version of myself. When I started, I knew nothing about these sports and now I am a three-time state champion in wrestling and a purple belt in jiu-jitsu, both of which are rare accomplishments. These are just milestones in my progress, but they show my commitment and dedication to something I am passionate about. Wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu have taught me how to be a strong leader. I held the leadership role of team captain for two years for my high school girls wrestling team. This role allowed me to support my team and mentor them. I received the captain’s award my senior year, showing that my leadership qualities stood out among other team captains. I love teaching and helping people with things that I am passionate about, and aviation will be no different. Other leadership roles that helped me grow were being a WEB leader in middle school, and being a Link Crew leader my senior year of high school. As a WEB and Link Crew leader, we met during the summer for leadership training where we were prepared to help incoming students for the upcoming school year. With an assigned group of students, we would meet each month during the first semester of school to check in with them. These programs further taught me how to be an effective and confident leader. With my work ethic, leadership skills, and passion for flying, I know that I can accomplish my goal of becoming a pilot. However, a major challenge that I am working to overcome is getting the money to fund my goals. Due to my huge commitment to sports (including multiple practices and workouts everyday) over the past several years, my opportunity to earn and save money has been extremely limited. Now with the intensive schedule of my aviation program and college classes, my ability to earn money continues to be limited. Every day, I work closely with these students to help them with life skills like baking, using money, doing laundry, cleaning dishes, and more. I have been a member of National Honor Society for all four years of high school, completing twelve hours of community service each of the first three years, and eighteen hours my senior year. I am in Link Crew, a program to help in-coming freshman transition to high school. We not only meet during the summer, but also meet with our group of freshman each month of the first semester to see if they need help in any way -- and make sure they are staying involved with extra school activities like clubs and sports. Outside of high school, I have volunteered at Maltby Elementary School as teacher assistant, as a wrestling coach at Valley View Middle School, as a coach at Cascade Jiu-jitsu, as a coach at Ascend Wrestling Academy, and as a helper for the preschool program at Canyon Hills Ministry. Specifically, I am most proud of being a volunteer teacher assistant at Maltby Elementary for the Montessori program. I specifically chose this program because, when I was in elementary school, I greatly benefited from being in the Montessori program. My goal was to provide the students with the same benefits that I received from the program, including learning responsibility, organization, creativity, curiosity, and more. I not only worked with the students, but I also helped their teacher with tasks so that she had more time to give the students one-on-one attention.
