But of course, you won't.” When Thrasymachus says that “justice is nothing else than the interest of the stronger,” he challenges the idea that justice automatically means fairness or doing what is morally right. I understand his argument as a warning about the relationship between power and justice. The people who have the most authority often have the ability to create laws, establish rules, and decide what behavior will be rewarded or punished. However, having the power to make a rule does not automatically make that rule just. Plato’s discussion forces us to look beyond whether something is legal and ask a much harder question: Who benefits from the system, and is the outcome actually fair? The word “stronger” is what first stands out to me. I do not think strength here should be understood only as physical strength. Strength can mean political authority, wealth, social status, education, influence, or even access to information. Someone who understands a system has an advantage over someone who does not. Governments have power over citizens, employers have power within workplaces, and people who understand complicated legal systems often have an advantage over people who are trying to navigate those systems for the first time. This makes Thrasymachus's argument uncomfortable because there are many times throughout history when something was legal but clearly was not just. Slavery was once protected by law. Racial segregation was enforced by law. Women were denied rights through laws and policies that were accepted for generations. The existence of those laws did not make the treatment of those groups morally right. If we accept Thrasymachus's definition completely, then we would have to accept that whoever has power can define justice according to what benefits them. Plato makes the reader question whether obeying the law and pursuing justice are always the same thing.
