Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kara, and I am a returning student currently working full-time for the City of Philadelphia. I am a proud pet mom who enjoys singing, dancing, performing, and painting. I love to laugh and strive to make others feel appreciated.
In addition to my professional and academic responsibilities, I help care for my elderly parents and assist my eldest brother with reading when needed. My family is also navigating the grief of losing my middle brother in a tragic accident caused by a drunk driver this past October.
This heartbreaking experience ultimately inspired me to return to school. It reminded me that life is unpredictable and that opportunities should not be postponed. As a result, I have decided to step outside of my previously reclusive lifestyle, build new connections, and pursue my goals so that I can grow into the fullest version of myself.
I am also a former Jehovah's Witness who is learning to navigate life outside of a highly structured religious environment. As I move forward, I am rediscovering who I am and allowing myself to develop secular aspirations and personal goals that extend beyond the preaching work that once defined my future. This journey of self-discovery has challenged me to reimagine what is possible for my life and to create dreams that reflect my own values, interests, and potential.
Returning to school is an important part of that process. I am excited for the opportunity to learn, connect with others, and continue building a meaningful and fulfilling future.

New Light: Illuminating Your Future Scholarship
I am a former Jehovah's Witness and the daughter of a congregation elder who is learning to navigate life outside of a highly structured religious environment. For much of my life, my future was defined by the expectations of the faith community in which I was raised. Higher education, career ambitions, and personal aspirations were often viewed as secondary to the preaching work. As I move forward, I am rediscovering who I am and allowing myself to develop secular aspirations and personal goals that reflect my own values, interests, and potential.
This journey of self-discovery has required courage, resilience, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty. Leaving behind a belief system that shaped nearly every aspect of my identity has challenged me to reimagine what is possible for my life. It has also given me the opportunity to explore interests that I had not previously allowed myself to pursue. I am learning that it is never too late to dream, to grow, and to create a future built on authenticity and self-determination.
Returning to school is an important part of that process. As a nontraditional student, I bring with me life experience, determination, and a deep appreciation for the value of education. I am excited by the opportunity to learn, engage with diverse perspectives, and connect with others who are also striving to better themselves and their communities. Education represents more than a degree for me; it is a pathway to empowerment, independence, and the ability to make informed choices about my future.
To accomplish my goals, I plan to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts with a focus on history. This degree will provide me with the critical thinking, research, and communication skills necessary to pursue new opportunities within my current employment and potentially transition into a new field. Studying history will also allow me to better understand the social, cultural, and psychological factors that influence human behavior and belief systems.
Ideally, I hope to use my education to deepen my understanding of high-control and cult-like religious organizations. I want to explore how individuals become involved in these groups, the challenges they face when leaving, and how society can better recognize and address the predatory practices that such organizations may employ. By increasing awareness and fostering compassion, I hope to contribute to meaningful conversations that support those who are rebuilding their lives after similar experiences.
Pursuing higher education is my way of reclaiming ownership of my future. Through perseverance, curiosity, and a commitment to lifelong learning, I am building a life defined not by limitation, but by possibility.
