It became my crutch, something I required in order to feel "normal." I lost sight of who I was, my relationships suffered, and my motivation vanished. The things that used to make me happy seemed hollow, and I was caught in a vicious loop that I couldn't escape. In addition to mourning my brother's passing, I was also losing myself. The realization that numbing the grief wouldn't bring my brother back was the pivotal moment. It was only keeping me stagnant; it wasn't helping me get well. I made the decision that I wanted to live, to pay tribute to my brother's memory in a meaningful way, rather than simply exist. It wasn't easy to get sober. It made me sit with the feelings I had been avoiding and confront the loss head-on. However, I found a strength I was unaware I possessed during that process. As a result, I now approach school as a collaborative student who values the experiences of my peers, the knowledge of elders, and the insights that come from teamwork. Additionally, it has inspired me to look for educational initiatives that respect other viewpoints and include indigenous knowledge into traditional curricula. My upbringing has also given me a strong appreciation for the land and the environment, which has shaped my academic interests and professional aspirations. Sustainability and environmental stewardship are longstanding traditions among many Native American tribes. My interest in conservation, environmental policy, and sustainable development has grown as a result of this. Using my degree, I hope to support laws that uphold indigenous rights and traditional ecological knowledge while preserving the environment and supporting sustainability. In addition, I have a strong feeling of determination and resilience because of my cultural heritage. Adversity, such as marginalization, forced assimilation, and displacement, has characterized Native American history. Indigenous communities have shown incredible resilience and fortitude in the face of these adversities. This fortitude has strengthened my will to overcome setbacks in my academic career and to continue my study in spite of any problems I may encounter.
