From an early age, I recognized my aspiration to become a neurosurgeon. While this may appear to be an ambitious goal for a child, it represented a clear objective for me, marking the start of my professional journey and a keen interest in the medical field. That summer, I dedicated myself to understanding the complexities of the brain and the responsibilities associated with neurosurgery, which only intensified my enthusiasm for this career path.
Despite my confidence in my chosen field, I initially felt uncertain about the steps required to pursue it. Coming from a family without a medical background, I was fortunate to have a mother who fully supported my aspirations. Acknowledging the seriousness of my goals, she recognized that pursuing medical school would require careful financial planning and chose to return to nursing school. Through her educational and professional experiences, I gained firsthand insights into the medical field's demands. Her dedication while working in the surgical department inspired me greatly.
Once I reached an appropriate age, I began interning in the operating room at a local hospital. Although the facility did not perform brain surgeries, the internship provided invaluable exposure to the hospital environment and operating room dynamics. This experience allowed me to observe various surgical procedures and interact with surgeons, further deepening my understanding of their roles, responsibilities, and challenges. These interactions reaffirmed my passion for neurosurgery and highlighted the dedication, discipline, and focus necessary for success in this field.
I am acutely aware of the underrepresentation of diversity in the medical profession, particularly in neurosurgery, where the number of Black physicians—especially Black female neurosurgeons—is significantly low. I am determined not only to enter this field but also to help shift perceptions about what is achievable for others. My journey toward neurosurgery goes beyond personal ambition; it embodies a commitment to breaking barriers and inspiring others to pursue their dreams, regardless of how unattainable they may appear.
I aspire to demonstrate that excellence knows no boundaries and that determination, ambition, and resilience can overcome any obstacle. Becoming a neurosurgeon will enable me to save lives and inspire others to dream boldly, work diligently, and achieve remarkable success. My overarching goal is to lead by example, illustrating that individuals can realize their aspirations regardless of their backgrounds. I aim to combine my passion for life-saving work with the mission of empowering others to discover their purpose, pursue their goals, and lead fulfilling lives.
The journey to becoming a neurosurgeon extends beyond personal achievement; it encompasses a commitment to a greater purpose—transforming lives, advancing medical practices, and inspiring the next generation of leaders in neurosurgery. This is my mission, and I am eager to dedicate my life to realizing it.

Participating in cheerleading helped me realize my passion for helping others. During this time, I began to envision a future filled with ambitions that felt like attainable goals rather than mere dreams. One strong aspiration emerged clearly in my mind while I was in fifth grade: I wanted to pursue a career as a neurosurgeon. While this may seem like a lofty ambition for a child, it was my first serious consideration of a professional path. I became captivated by the complexities of the human brain and the nervous system, igniting a spark of interest that had never been present before.
That summer, I committed myself to studying the brain and the field of neurosurgery. The more knowledge I acquired, the more fascinated I became with the intricacies of the human body and the profound impact a neurosurgeon can have on patients. I dedicated countless hours to reading books, watching documentaries, and exploring articles, eager to absorb as much information as possible. It was exhilarating to learn about the brain's functions and the delicate equilibrium necessary for its health. Each piece of information I encountered reinforced my determination to pursue this career, although I felt a degree of uncertainty as well. Without a clear roadmap to guide me—especially as I did not come from a family of medical professionals—I found comfort in the unwavering support of my family, particularly my mother.
My mother was steadfast in her commitment to help me achieve my ambitions and recognized the significance of a strong educational foundation. When she understood the seriousness of my goal to become a neurosurgeon, she willingly made sacrifices to support my aspirations. She enrolled in nursing school, showcasing resilience and hard work. Observing her navigate the challenges of balancing school and work opened my eyes to the dedication required in the medical field.
When my mother began her work in surgery, I felt a surge of excitement. I was eager to deepen my understanding of the medical profession and the realities of working in a hospital environment. Eventually, I reached an age where I could apply for an internship, and I was thrilled to secure a position in the operating room of a local hospital. Although this hospital did not perform brain surgeries, I still gained valuable exposure to the dynamic environment of surgery. I observed skilled surgeons at work, learned about their responsibilities, and witnessed the significant impact they had on their patients' lives. With each passing day, my enthusiasm for neurosurgery grew, along with my determination to pursue this career.
However, I am acutely aware of the challenges that lie ahead. As I contemplate my future, particularly the financial implications of pursuing higher education and medical school, I feel a mix of anxiety and determination. Coming from a single-parent household, my mother and I have consistently navigated financial constraints. We have often prioritized essential expenses over discretionary spending, leaving limited resources for extracurricular activities or outings. As I consider the costs associated with my education and training, I am resolved to seek scholarships, financial aid, and part-time employment to help mitigate some of these financial burdens.
While the journey ahead may present various obstacles, I remain committed to transforming my passion for helping others into a meaningful career. I am prepared to embrace the challenges that await, inspired by my mother’s sacrifices and motivated to realize my dream of becoming a neurosurgeon.

Cheerleading has played a significant role in my life, helping me not only to develop a passion for sports but also to discover my desire to assist others. This experience instilled in me the values of teamwork, resilience, and dedication, while also igniting a deep interest in the field of medicine. My aspiration to become a neurosurgeon began in fifth grade. Though it may appear to be an ambitious goal for someone so young, it felt attainable to me. I dedicated my summer to studying the brain and the field of neurosurgery, and with each page I turned, my fascination deepened. I was committed to this path but was unsure where to start.
Coming from a family without any medical professionals, I lacked a clear roadmap. However, I was fortunate to have a mother who supported my ambitions wholeheartedly. When she recognized my serious commitment to my dream, she understood the sacrifices necessary for my success. She decided to return to nursing school, driven to provide the financial stability I would need to pursue a medical career. Her dedication to making my dream a reality further inspired me. As she advanced in her studies, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand the effort and commitment required to thrive in the medical field.
When my mother began working in surgery, I was overjoyed. Observing her in the profession I aspired to join gave me invaluable insights into the realities of the medical world. It became evident that medicine involves much more than theoretical knowledge; it revolves around impacting real lives and supporting individuals in need.
As I matured, I took proactive steps to immerse myself in the field by interning in the operating room of a local hospital. Although the hospital did not specialize in neurosurgery, I gained exposure to the operating room environment. I had the opportunity to observe surgeries, interact with surgeons, and grasp the day-to-day realities of the medical profession. Witnessing the precision and collaboration required for surgical procedures further affirmed my aspiration to pursue neurosurgery.
I am aware that becoming a neurosurgeon will enable me to make a substantial impact within the field of medicine and beyond. Neurosurgery, like many areas in medicine, is still predominantly represented by white males. As a Black woman, I recognize the lack of representation in this profession, which only strengthens my resolve. My ambition is to become one of the few Black female neurosurgeons who excels in this field and helps to reshape perceptions of what is achievable. My goal extends beyond saving lives; I aspire to inspire others, especially young Black girls, to pursue their dreams regardless of their magnitude.
Through my work as a neurosurgeon, I aim to effect meaningful change, serve as a role model, and encourage others to lead lives filled with purpose and excellence. I am committed to demonstrating that with hard work, dedication, and self-belief, dreams can become a reality.
Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Growing up, I was raised solely by my mother, as my father left before I could recall any memories with him. This has been the only family dynamic I've known. While I recognized that my upbringing differed from those of my peers, it never truly affected me until I gained a broader understanding of the world as I matured. In my younger years, like many children, I was not aware of the financial challenges we faced. I often wondered why my friends had the opportunity to vacation at the beach while my mother and I enjoyed meals or movies together instead.
As a child, I did not fully comprehend the extent of my mother's sacrifices to provide for me. She worked two jobs consistently to make ends meet, and it wasn't until I witnessed her cry for the first time that I began to appreciate her struggles. I recall the moment vividly; she had come home exhausted from a long day, and I overheard her in the bathroom. It was a revealing experience that made me realize the immense pressure she was under to give me the best possible opportunities.
In the aftermath of that experience, I resumed my life as a typical child. I took a break from cheerleading for several years, which likely impacted her more than it did me. Cheerleading was a shared dream for us, linked to aspirations of events like the Olympics or national championships. However, over time, negative influences led me to question its value. After a few years away from the sport, I recognized how much I missed it and expressed to my mother my desire to return.
Beginning cheerleading again helped me appreciate the significance of hard work—both my own and my mother's. Although I enjoyed cheer, it became evident how challenging it was for her to juggle multiple jobs while supporting my activities, particularly when I started carpooling with others to practice. This experience shifted my perspective on financial matters.
At this point, I resolved to pursue a career as a neurosurgeon. When I shared this ambition with my mother, she recognized my determination and made a significant choice to return to nursing school. Observing her dedication as she balanced her studies and full-time work inspired me to enhance my efforts in both cheerleading and academics.
When my mother graduated and began working in the operating room at the hospital, my pride in her accomplishments was immense. I felt motivated for both my future and the future she had created for us. During my senior year, I volunteered as an intern in the operating room to gain insight into the career I aspired to pursue. Although the hospital did not perform brain surgeries, the experience provided valuable exposure to the medical field and highlighted the effort required for successful operations. This solidified my passion for medicine and my commitment to continuing the journey my mother had initiated.
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize the profound influence my mother has had on shaping my identity. She instilled in me the values of hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. As I progress on my path to becoming a neurosurgeon, I carry her strength and determination with me every day.

My journey in cheerleading has been a profound navigation through both triumphs and challenges, highlighting the significance of resilience and the importance of deriving joy from our passions. While it may appear to be a narrative solely about cheerleading, it fundamentally encompasses themes of growth, perseverance, and overcoming adversity.
I began cheerleading at the age of three, and it quickly became a central component of my life. However, my path has not been without obstacles. At the age of seven, I decided to take a break from cheer due to a negative gym environment, leading me to believe my cheerleading career had come to an end. After several years away, I realized that something vital was missing from my life. At eleven, I chose to return to the sport I loved. I felt apprehensive—when I had left, I was perfecting back tucks, but now I struggled with even a backbend. It felt as though I was starting anew, but this decision proved to be transformative.
Within a year, I advanced from a junior level one team to a junior level three team, and that season became one of the most successful in my team's history. We were on track to achieve great things until the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of our gym, community, and competition season. Despite this setback, I remained determined. The following year, we returned with renewed energy and focus. After navigating quarantines and virtual practices, we finally competed again. Though we did not secure jackets, we earned my first championship rings, setting a new objective for myself in subsequent seasons.
As I advanced in cheerleading, I had the opportunity to join multiple teams: junior three, senior four, and senior one. Each season presented its own challenges but also considerable opportunities for growth. Additionally, I had the chance to coach a tiny team, which profoundly changed my perspective on the sport. Teaching others to appreciate the sport I had cherished for years was an enlightening experience, underscoring the value of patience, communication, and leadership. Coaching provided me with a renewed sense of purpose within cheerleading.
Now, in my senior year, I am concentrating on one team as I prepare for the next chapter of my life—college. While this journey may seem centered around cheerleading, it encompasses far more: moments of heartbreak, loss, self-discovery, goal-setting, and perseverance. My experiences have taught me that success lies in overcoming setbacks and remaining steadfast in pursuit of what brings us joy. It involves finding strength in moments of vulnerability and supporting others along the way.
When I first started cheerleading, I was confident and fearless. However, after encountering toxicity within the sport, I lost that confidence and sense of self-belief. Though discouraged, I worked diligently to reclaim my joy. I established small goals to restore my confidence, and gradually, I grew stronger. Just as I began to regain my footing, the pandemic struck. Nevertheless, we adapted, supported one another, and continued to move forward.
As I transition into the next phase of my life, I recognize that my cheerleading journey has equipped me to face future challenges. I have learned that success is not dictated by the opinions of others, and it's acceptable to forge a path that is uniquely my own. Whether I stand alone or alongside a supportive team, I will continue to pursue my goals with determination.

An obstacle I have faced on this journey is attending a predominantly white school, where I have often found that I am not the first choice for opportunities that could facilitate my goals. There have been instances when I was overlooked due to my race, but I have learned not to let these setbacks define me. Perseverance has taught me that while having a strong support network is beneficial, it is not solely about the size of the team behind me, but rather about having the right team. I have discovered that faith in my purpose and my ability to press forward can illuminate the path, even when challenges arise.
Becoming a neurosurgeon will enable me to save lives and significantly impact the lives of patients and their families. However, my objectives extend beyond life-saving work. Faith has been a fundamental aspect of my life, greatly influenced by my upbringing in a Christian family that valued prayer and active church involvement. While faith is inherently personal, I made the independent decision to join the church at the age of three, with the encouragement of my mother. My baptism at the age of ten was a significant milestone that deepened my relationship with God and enhanced my understanding of my faith.
Navigating spiritual commitments alongside other activities has posed challenges, particularly when cheerleading practices conflicted with Sunday services. Nevertheless, I recognized the importance of prioritizing my spiritual journey and sought innovative ways to maintain my connection with God. I started using a Bible app for daily verses and engaged in devotionals with my cheer team on Sundays and Wednesdays. Additionally, I integrated prayer into each performance, fostering a positive and faith-oriented atmosphere within my team. This approach not only supported my spiritual growth but also provided a safe space for my teammates to share their experiences and challenges.
These experiences have highlighted the significance of faith, perseverance, and community. As I look ahead, I aim to inspire similar faith-sharing and community-building practices among future cheer teams I may be involved with, whether as a participant or a coach. I am dedicated to empowering younger individuals to recognize and appreciate the gifts they have received.
My aspirations also extend beyond athletics; I plan to attend medical school, which will allow me to merge my faith with my professional aspirations. My faith serves as the foundation for the compassion, service, and integrity I aspire to embody in my medical career. I intend to remain active in church groups during my studies, enhancing my spiritual growth while supporting others in their faith journeys.
Additionally, I hope to instill these values in my future children by creating a home environment grounded in love, faith, and service. I want my children to feel empowered to embrace their relationship with Jesus and to share His love with others. To me, faith is not merely a personal belief; it represents the opportunity to build a legacy of kindness, humility, and service that can inspire future generations.
Faith has influenced my approach to challenges, relationships, and personal growth. Through prayer, devotion, and proactive engagement, I have learned to rely on God’s guidance at every stage of life. I am confident that my faith will continue to steer me as I pursue my ambitions, cultivate meaningful connections, and strive to positively impact the lives of others.
As I embark on my medical career, I am mindful of the responsibility I will bear in serving others. I intend to pray for each of my patients prior to their surgeries and during their recovery. I also plan to coach cheerleading during my college years, teaching my team the significance of faith, gratitude, and prayer before each performance and event.
Faith is not just a part of my life; it is my foundation, guiding me toward a life of service, compassion, and purpose.

To me, faith is about far more than personal belief; it is about building a legacy of kindness, humility, and service for others to follow.
Faith has shaped the way I approach challenges, relationships, and my own personal growth. Through prayer, devotion, and action, I have learned to rely on God’s guidance in every season of life. I lost my great-grandmother to Alzheimer's disease just over a year ago. I cannot recall a time in my life when her illness was not a significant factor. She received her diagnosis prior to my birth, and the only version of her I recognized was one that deteriorated over time. I transitioned from experiences of sitting outdoors, enjoying lemonade and laughter, to assisting her with feeding due to her inability to hold a spoon. The progression of her condition was difficult for me to comprehend as it unfolded. By the time I reached my teenage years, I had attained sufficient understanding of Alzheimer's disease and recognized its permanence; however, her condition had already severely declined. She was no longer able to recognize individuals as she once had, and on fortunate occasions, she would engage in conversation with us. We required the presence of an aide during the day to facilitate my mother's work and my schooling. Unfortunately, the situation reached a critical point when an event occurred that ultimately contributed to her death—one that we wished we could have prevented. Unbeknownst to us, she sustained a minor cut on her toe. While such an injury would typically be inconsequential for most, it became detrimental for her. Following the infection of the minor cut, she was unexpectedly rushed to the hospital. There, she was placed on a ventilator and admitted to the ICU, and the atmosphere at home felt significantly colder. Initially, we were informed that she was improving and would soon be weaned off the ventilator. However, the complication arose that she was unable to cough. It is generally understood that patients on ventilators must cough to expel phlegm and enhance respiratory function. Tragically, due to her incapacity to remember how to cough, a decision was made to reinstate her on the ventilator. She spent one additional day at home before ultimately passing away. My aspiration to become a neurosurgeon was established in fifth grade, but the experience of caring for my great-grandmother solidified my decision. I have chosen to specialize in pediatric neurosurgery because I seek to provide children with a renewed opportunity for life. My goal is to ensure that children and adolescents have the chance to mature and that families do not have to suffer the premature loss of a loved one. Although my great-grandmother was present during my upbringing, she was never fully aware of me, and I aim to utilize my skills to enable others to not only meet but also love and understand their family members and the broader world.
