I didn't expect my childhood to be stripped away so suddenly. During the second semester of my junior year, my family started to experience financial hardships. My father, who had been the majority of my family's income, was suddenly hit with all of the grief and mental anguish that he had been building up his whole life. He was forced to stop working because his mental difficulties were consuming him. We now had to depend on my mother who previously just worked for luxury items but now had to pay bills and feed us. I was given the ultimatum to get a job or my family had to move to Arizona where we could be further supported by my distant family. During my sophomore year summer, I applied everywhere. I prayed every day that someone would give me a job so I wouldn't have to leave the life that I'd established here behind. I ended up getting a job at the local McDonald's, I worked every hour that I could while also doing medical pathway internships. I used every paycheck to put food on the table and pay the bills to help my mom. This financial dependence made me appreciate the freedom and privilege I had when I was a kid. I started to develop a sense of responsibility, my mom wasn't making enough to support us, and although my checks weren't transformative, allowing myself to provide in a way I have never before made me feel important. With the summer coming to an end, I knew that I had to juggle school life and work since my family's financial situation had not been solved. I worked continuously while also going to school, I didn't have a choice to work but I also didn't have a choice to do poorly in school. I spent countless hours staying up at night trying to catch up on homework that I missed to prioritize making money. I had to continue excelling in school otherwise I'd be stuck in the same generational curses that my family were experiencing. This experience has made me the most driven and inspired, experiencing poverty first hand has ignited a spark towards doing everything I can to beat it for my children. I have worked passionately during high school to be the top of my class, I have challenged myself and took on a surplus of AP and IB classes to place me into a university where I can receive a degree to beat the generational curse of poverty.

I am attending GCU and am majoring in nursing, I plan on leaving an impact on as many families and patients as I can once I become a registered nurse.

The human body has always intrigued me: however, when my brother was hospitalized for a week it ignited a spark towards the medical field. My brother has type one diabetes and was doing well for two years after getting diagnosed until he wasn't. For a week my parents were up late with my brother constantly giving him fast-acting high-glucose snacks to help bring my brother's blood sugar up. After many nights of lost sleep, my parents hospitalized my brother. After being monitored by the doctors and nurses for 3 days it was clear there was nothing wrong with my brother, other than the fact that he had been dosing himself with enough insulin to kill himself. As a young 10 year old I wondered why my brother would do such a thing. I immediately became intrigued with the human body and psychology. After seeing my brother in such a miserable state I dedicated my future to the medical field. I was engulfed in growing my knowledge and excelling in my medical pathway so that one day I could choose a career to help people who struggled like my brother. Most of my family struggles with mental health as well as several other illnesses: ovarian cancer, respiratory failure, prader-willi syndrome, diabetes and much more. I spent most of my childhood in hospitals watching families break including mine, I want to be the joyful smile that helps lift families up in vulnerable times. Seeing the dull void that hospitals create inspires me to be the light that shines. Throughout all of high school I have strived to gain a strong academic standing as well as balancing a job and taking on various medical opportunities to advance my knowledge. I am confident that I am the most dedicated to bettering my community. Im not sure what field of nursing I want to specialize in, however, after I am consistently strong in my field of choice I plan to conduct research on specific topics. I hope to leave an impact on as many patients and families as possible as well as being the most precise in my work. I am attending a 4 year private university and my major is nursing, I chose this university because they have lab simulations and offer clinical hours and various labs that no other university offers for freshman. I plan to make the most of my university and take every education opportunity possible.
