I am currently a student at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and my major is Computer Science. The reason I chose Computer Science as my major is because it allows me to explore my passion of problem solving. My goal is to earn a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in Software Engineering. For the last two years, coding has been a creative outlet. I have learned to generate ideas that solve user-specific problems, design and program solutions. I have taken most of the lower level programming courses required for my major, and to say I am intrigued is an understatement. When I took my first programming class, my knowledge and ability in coding was very limited. However, I can confidently say that with the amount of time and dedication I have put into coding, the growth of my proficiency has been astonishing. I am proficient in three high level languages; Python, C++, and C#. I was raised in Cameroon, Africa. I grew up speaking mainly French, so my fluency in English was limited. After moving to the United States, I found that the American education system vastly differed from that of Cameroon, so I endeavored to settle into the new school system. However, I struggled most in my English class. I was often called on to read during “popcorn” reading, and my classmates would let out a chorus of snickers. This was detrimental to my confidence and self-esteem in reading English. I developed a deep anxiety for public speaking and reading. Hence, I dreaded the days when I was assigned to give a presentation. Consequently, the problem I hope to solve through coding is illiteracy. However, to clarify I believe that to be illiterate, one lacks the ability to read and write in a language they speak fluently. Hence, teasing immigrants who don't speak or read proper English is unconscionable because they are most likely literate in their mother tongue. All this to say, I want to develop an app that aids children or even adults who are struggling in their efforts to literate in another language. The overall vision of the app is for it to give users the ability to translate languages using Text-to-Speech (TTS) features. The app would also help users with their pronunciation. The backend of the app would be programmed mostly in Python, and the frontend would most likely be programmed using HTML. The app would be compatible with both iOS and Android, hence both Java and Swift will be used. Lastly, I would like for the design of the app to be very user friendly, as I know how frustrating it is to use an app with a bad UI design. I believe this app would give users the confidence needed when learning to read or speak a new language.
