Bio

I am constantly asked, "Why are you pursuing a degree, and what is your career goal?" This degree is for my sisters. My sisters, who need to see women succeed, say, If I can do it, you can too! This degree is for my family. It is for my aunt and mother, who dropped out of school. Also for my daughter, who is going to go further than I am. This degree is for those generational curses that will end with me. They cannot have my children and grandchildren. It stops now. This degree is for my family members who have given up. This degree is for black women. We need to see more black women succeed. It continues here. This degree is for my family; do not worry, I will not disappoint you. You will see this rose grow from concrete. This degree is for my brother. He needs to see his big sister succeed. He needs to see that we can excel in a system built against us. This degree is for my brothers and sisters. We want justice. Cease your worries; slowly but surely, we will get there. This degree is for my mother. Her encouragement has pushed me to great lengths. I will not disappoint her. Last but not least, this degree is for the black community, which marched for my rights. Your work will not be in vain.

As a child, I would always volunteer with my grandmother. Volunteering at her practice became a holiday tradition. Every holiday, she would make sure that we gave back to the community. My grandmother worked as a social worker, so to see the way the children’s faces would light up when they discovered that Santa did not forget about them would warm my heart. At that moment, I decided that I was going to make service a career of mine. I decided to make giving back a daily task, not just a task completed on special occasions. As I grew older, I noticed that serving others mentally was just as impactful as serving them physically. I became interested in psychology, and my goal is to be an outlet for people to express their innermost trauma. Following my high school years, I started watching a show named Grey’s Anatomy. I instantly fell in love with the world of medicine. The show spoke about the importance of medicine and patient care while also including drama for the viewers. It intrigued me, so I researched medical careers until my fingers were numb. I wondered many questions, like, “How do doctors help patients? How is psychology used in medicine? What is the career path to becoming a psychiatric nurse?” I discovered that psychiatry is a unique combination of medicine and psychology. The profession uses medicine to help discover contributing factors to a patient's unhealthy mental well-being. While researching, I also learned that psychiatry is amazing; not only would I be taking care of patients, but I would also have a greater understanding of how their body may also be affecting their mental health. I finally found a career for me. While in high school, I participated in the early college program. As a result, I earned my Associate of Arts in General Studies while in secondary school. I then continued to earn my bachelor of science in psychology two years later. As a college student, I volunteered at the Dream Center in Los Angeles, California, where I interacted with locals on skid row, fed the homeless, went to church with the community, and helped serve in endemic neighborhoods. I learned that there is so much power in greeting the community around me. Simply asking a person how their day is going can change the trajectory of their day. In August 2023, I will be attending the Disney College Program. After the Disney College Program, I will pursue my top career goal, which is to become a psychiatric nurse. I would like to learn the unique balance between taking care of patients and helping with their mental health. As a multi-sport athlete, I learned that I have to work hard to accomplish my goals. As a result, I am willing to academically start from scratch. Psychology and medicine are passions of mine that I will pursue and help positively alter the philosophy of medicine.

      Ocho Cares Artistry Scholarship
Tupac once asked in a song “Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?” I must admit this question bewildered me, it threw me for a loop. How could something so beautiful come from concrete? Although the question shook my core I let the idea get away from me. As my senior year approaches, I realized that time has flown by, I am going to be an adult in a couple of months and I don’t know what I am going to do with my life. Not only will this scholarship help me continue my education, but it would bring me to hope for the future! A career is not something that you just hop into, that would be a job. A career is something that inspires you to follow your dreams. It is something that pushes you to wake up every morning. It’s a drive, a want, a need to be successful. I want that in my life, I have the grit to push myself to have a career. Helping others every day is a requirement for the career path I will choose. Whether I am a doctor, social worker, or juvenile counselor. I will change lives and I will do it in heels. Continuing my education is not a choice, it's a requirement. Not given to me by my family, but by myself. I have not one aunt or uncle that went to college straight out of high school and received a degree. I am in Early College High School, which is very new for my family. In high school, my mom and I were in the same class at San Jacinto College. My father is a student at Houston Community College. We are all in college together, apply for scholarships and financial aid. The truth is we all need them. One school night I just broke down. I couldn't do it anymore. I could not continue with these college classes. I was stressed out and in pain, I was tired of asking for help and decided to give up. I went to my mother’s room to tell her how I was feeling and she said to me “Listen, baby, I know that this is hard work. You are the first in the family to go to high school and college at the same time and that is big, but you have to realize that you are not average. God has told me that you will do great things and you will break the cycle. You'll succeed abundantly. I know that you’re hurting and I know that you are confused, but don’t give up because you will change the world.” I could do nothing but cry because I knew His plans for me were great, but I didn’t know how great and this scholarship is where it starts. This is where the blessings start to roll in. The scholarship money goes straight into better education. Tupac once asked in a song “Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?” He also said, “The seed must grow regardless of the fact that it’s planted in stone.” Then it hit me that Rose had nowhere else to grow but up. It came out of concrete and blossomed beautifully. It didn’t pay attention to the area around it, but it prospered into something prepossessing. It didn’t even let the concrete stop it. I want to be like that rose, I am going to be that rose. Watch out because I am and will continue to grow out of concrete.
