Eliminating obstacles is like eliminating the journey of your achievements. The biggest obstacle that has caused bumps in the road of my education was during college admissions. Within my last year of high school around the time for college admissions, I was receiving rejection letters back to back. I was getting accepted into private institutions that provided scholarships and financial aid, which only covered approximately 30% of tuition. At the time I had to decide what was the best decision for my education, being in debt or attending community college. Working hard from elementary to high school placed me in a situation where I expected more and it brought tears to my eyes not being able to attend dream schools. I was at a breaking point where I almost decided that maybe school just wasn't for me anymore. I thought long and hard about how far I came, studying late nights, staying after school for tutoring, and getting involved in school as much as I can. I would never forgive myself if I settled for less to work a part-time job and not attend school. After long consideration, it became clear to me that God may have different plans for me. After praying long and hard I decided to attend a community college for two years and then transfer to major in Health Management. Majoring in Health Management is just the roots of it all. This major is important to me when looking back at countries like Jamaica in need of more health care facilities and access to more private doctors. Not just Jamaica but other undeveloped countries could use a better health care system. My goal is to build up health centers and hospitals equipped with more well-qualified doctors in undeveloped countries worldwide. My goal is more of a lifetime goal that will take time and research, but a wise man once said, "a dream does not become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work (Colin Powell). Born and raised in Jamaica where times were hard and resources are limited motivates me personally to become something in life. Life as a young black African American female student carries weight and is challenged by statics. I think of education as a one-shot at glory opportunity. Obtaining an education should not be in your rearview mirror because it is a limited opportunity for certain individuals. Take the shot at glory and make a difference and beat the statics.
