As an African American who has spent the majority of my life in China, I feel I have developed a unique perspective on education, culture, and further challenges in the African American community. These experiences have led to me pursuing education in the fields of Biology or Engineering, although I am undecided at the moment. Through my experiences abroad I would like to dedicate both my future teachings and experiences to inspire the next generation of creators, thinkers, and leaders alike.
Growing up in a diverse country abroad has exposed me to differing perspectives which aid in problem solving. I feel my background has given me an invaluable understanding of education, where understanding multiple views enriches the experience of learning. I wish to assist students in appreciating the interconnectedness of this world in the areas of biology and engineering.
Focusing on biology, I am particularly passionate about marine ecosystems, and arctic areas. It is impossible not to see that the ocean is currently facing a multitude of challenges with climate, pollution, overfishing, and more. As an educator I wish to provide students with the necessary knowledge and tools to protest for sustainable practices as well as care for marine animals affected by these issues. By providing both a sense of responsibility and curiosity, I hope I can inspire them to become proactive advocates of our planet.
In regards to engineering, I see potential to address and innovate global challenges. Technology for one plays a critical role in solving issues such as renewable energy, clean water, and production of agriculture. I wish to focus on the practical application of engineering as well as encourage creativity. With the use of project based learning, I would like to build their problem solving skills and inspire them to create solutions that can contribute to real world issues.
During my teachings abroad, I recognize the importance of mentorship and representation in education. Being an African American role model who has lived abroad, I would like to serve as a mentor for students who believe they are not represented as well in STEM fields. I aim to build mentorship programs that give applicational experience as well as introduce students to professionals in biology and engineering. By introducing diverse mentors, I hope to abolish barriers and encourage underrepresented students to pursue their passions.
Along with academics, I view extracurriculars as opportunities to foster personal growth. At the beginning of 2024 I was in a restaurant in the Malaysia and they had a band playing requested songs. One lady was playing the guitar so masterfully I immediately asked my mom if I could get a guitar of my own. She agreed and I've been dedicating myself to learning more and more as I grow. With boxing, I pushed myself to the point where from September 2024 to January 2025, I was waking up at 3am to go for morning runs. I also took cold showers in the mornings and never used AC or heating as a means of psychological victory. However I pushed myself into losing sleep, and overtrained. However I believe those 4 extremely difficult months pushed me to my absolute limits and fostered my personal growth. After experiencing this roller coaster of development and emotion, I wish to see this in further students believing such growth is necessary to be successful in any field.
In conclusion, as an educator in biology and engineering, I wish to foster students imagination by feeding their curiosity and creativity. I hope to inspire those who feel unseen to participate in creating a better world through innovative teaching methods.
