Assane Konte KanKouran West African Dance Co. Scholarship
The tenacity, creativity, and culture of African people around the world are vividly and persistently demonstrated by the African diaspora. As an African-American male in America, it can be difficult trying to stay connected with my roots. I became deeply involved in the study of traditional African dance during my time at the Dance Institute of Washington, which was crucial in strengthening my ties to the African diaspora. My understanding of the complex histories and customs of people of African descent has grown as a result of this art form, which acted as a cultural and spiritual compass. I discovered that dance was a powerful way to share the stories of my ancestors, foster community, and connect with my roots. I developed an understanding of the cultural significance of traditional African dance at the Dance Institute of Washington, in addition to learning its intricate techniques. Every movement served as a link between the past and the present, bearing the burden of generations. I now feel compelled to uphold and transmit these traditions as a result of it. It also showed me how the arts can promote a sense of identity and pride among people of African heritage and act as a unifying factor for the diaspora. I intend to carry on with this work as I get ready for the next phase of my life by majoring in entertainment journalism at Morehouse College and minoring in dance at Spelman College. I will learn more about the background and methods of African dance at Spelman, which will increase my capacity to use the arts as a means of teaching and cultural preservation. With this, I will be able to actively participate in the performing arts while using journalism to highlight the experiences and abilities of the African diaspora. In the future, I hope to start a nonprofit organization that empowers young Brown and Black boys who have a passion for the arts. I want to use the organization to give them a place to learn about the social justice movements that have influenced our communities and to explore their creative potential. The foundation will provide young boys with a platform to connect with their heritage and cultivate a feeling of pride in their identities by integrating traditional African dance and other artistic disciplines. Additionally, by including social justice education, they will be better prepared to use their art as a tool for activism and become catalysts for change in their communities. I am devoted to helping the African diaspora continue to flourish as it depends on the resilience and resourcefulness of its people. I want to improve our global community and encourage others to do the same by respecting the customs of the past and establishing opportunities for the next generation. My goal is to promote equity and empowerment while showcasing the beauty and fortitude of the African diaspora, whether that be accomplished through dance, journalism, or charitable work.
