Humans have an inherent instinct to create. Evolving from designing the first farms to the Seven Wonders of the World, the mind is an expansive place. Each individual has a drive: an impactful passion that keeps them going. From as simple as a niche for crocheting to as complicated as a knack for quantum computing, different desires fulfill different souls. Ever since my childhood, I’ve been searching for my place in this world: my legacy. My hands are too shaky to go into the arts, and I’m not quite handy enough to try for the trades. However, I was able to find my place in the classroom. As a kid, I could always finish multiplication tests faster than my peers, and I constantly flew through chapter books. Continuing through school, I knew I would find my heart in STEM. After being admitted to the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science, I was one step closer to finding what really drove me in life, and what my legacy will be. There, I was able to find my home: research. Although only mandatory as a freshman, I fell in love with learning and discovery. As a sophomore, I designed insulation out of plastic, with the following year's project incorporating an algorithm to scan for gravitationally lensed quasars. Both projects ended successfully: my insulation became more effective than fiberglass, and my code found 62 unknown quasars. With these projects, I placed 3rd and 1st at the regional Jersey Shore Science Fair and qualified for the multistate-wide fair known as the Delaware Valley Science Fair. There, I won national awards from the US Agency for International Development, Office of Naval Research Naval Science, Air Products Engineering Innovation, and more. For my last year, I wanted to do something with great impact. During my search, I stumbled across a Parkinson's study completed at Stanford University. This described vibrational therapy as a way to re-synchronize unsynchronized neurons when dealing with tremors. However, patients had to be stationary for two hours, twice a day for 3-6 months. With this, I felt that this study wasn’t feasibly approaching their findings. Their product was expensive and immobile. Seeing these issues, I decided to create my prototype. I designed a glove to help alleviate Parkinson’s tremors. After completing the assembly, I placed third in the medicine/health category out of 20 participants. Continuing to my multi-state fair, I placed first in their medicine/health category before placing third overall, enabling me to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, California. There, I was able to meet people with fascinating projects, make like-minded friends, and start the long journey of my legacy. I plan to use my connections and research skills to become a Mechanical Engineer, starting my legacy at Lehigh University this past fall. Over the years, I’ve finally found what my legacy will be. Growing up with a single mother who taught primary school, education was heavily emphasized in our household. However, my own ambition pushes me to create and discover within the field of science. Utilizing my research abilities, my love for STEM, and my drive to make my mark on the world, I plan to gain my master's degree at Lehigh University with their 4+1 program. Specializing in biomechanics, I want to get into the prosthetics industry. The drive to expand my knowledge while simultaneously helping others around me pushes me forward. My human instinct to create is finding ways to define my legacy: through research.
