My name is Kaila James I am 25 years old and a single mother of a 3 year old son. I was able to graduate with my bachelor degree is psychology in may of 2024 from my lovely HBCU. I am now going for my masters in Forensic Psychology, I think my background in mental health will help my career a lot. I have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression and acute PTSD. Even after my diagnosis I still didn’t understand why or how other people who have these problems fly of the rails and hurt children. My background in mental health is a driving force in my forensic psychology journey. I’ve developed a strong sense of empathy and a deep understanding of how psychological, social, and environmental factors influence behavior. This perspective not only shapes my professional aspirations but also impacts how I interact with others whether in personal relationships or in the field. My beliefs are influenced by an understanding that behavior is shaped by complex psychological, social, and biological factors. This perspective helps me approach relationships with more patience, compassion, and a nonjudgmental attitude, whether in personal or professional settings. Career-wise, my mental health background drives me toward roles where I can bridge the gap between psychology and the legal system perhaps through assessment, advocacy, rehabilitation, or research. I aspire to improve mental health services in correctional settings, influence policies related to competency and criminal responsibility, or work with at-risk populations to prevent crime. Ultimately, my goal may be to make a difference by promoting fair treatment of individuals with mental illness in the legal system, reducing recidivism through psychological intervention, or educating others on the intersection of law and mental health. My experience has strengthened my belief in rehabilitation over punishment, the importance of early intervention, and the need for systemic change in how the legal system handles mental health issues. In relationships, it makes me more patient and understanding, while also making me more aware of boundaries and self-care, given the emotional demands of the field. In my career, I hope to make a difference by advocating for fair treatment of individuals with mental illness in the justice system, improving mental health resources in correctional settings, or using psychological assessments to inform legal decisions. Whether through research, clinical work, or policy change, your background equips you to be a voice for those who may not be able to advocate for themselves. people in forensic psychology and mental health fields develop a deep sense of empathy, a commitment to justice, and a strong desire to support individuals who are often marginalized or misunderstood. My goal is to become court qualified to testify in cases that deal with mentally impaired children. Being court-qualified to testify in cases involving mentally impaired children means I’ll play a crucial role in ensuring that the legal system understands their unique needs, challenges, and capacities. My background in mental health will be invaluable in providing expert testimony on issues like competency, trauma, developmental disorders, and how these factors influence behavior. To reach this goal, I will focus on gaining specialized training in child forensic assessments, legal standards for competency and culpability, and courtroom testimony techniques. Pursuing certifications, advanced coursework, and hands-on experience with forensic evaluations will help establish my credibility as an expert witness.
