First-Gen Futures Scholarship
It hurts to see your family struggle. My grandparents always told me they wished they went to college. They started out homeless living in the woods camping out and washing their clothes in the river. My grandpa got a union job building bridges and was finally able to buy a house. He continued to work hard and sold his first house and bought another with land. While he worked he had the idea his land could bring more income. At first he started with animals. Not only did it help feed his family and cut the cost on groceries but he was able to make a profit selling eggs and animals. He came to a point where he no longer wanted to deal with raising animals. The start of crops began. My mother and aunts and uncles helped maintain and harvest the crops until they grew up and moved away. My grandfather eventually retired from his union job and took on being a full time farmer. When his grandchildren were old enough to walk he started teaching them about the crops. It wasn’t until my cousin was ran over by a tractor and died that we were no longer aloud to go into the field until we got older. My grandpa was hurt by the incident and never wanted this life for us. He told all seven of his granddaughters to stay in school and make something of ourselves so we would never have to go through what he did to provide for his family. There were many challenges in my life but I pursued college. After my grandfather passed away I made it my mission to finish what I started no matter what was thrown my way. My grandfather started with nothing and built something on a thought. It goes to show you can literally achieve whatever you believe in. I have seen my family try and fail. I have seen multiple struggles and I told myself if I work hard I won’t have to look back at the struggle but I have a future to look forward to. My grandfather’s hard work and dreams live on through me. I hope to be the example to my family that hard work and dedication pay off. It is also a dream of mine to see the legacy continue. I am a first generation college student in my family and this scholarship would help me pave the way to my future.
