I have played lacrosse since the age of 5 years old. While playing this sport, I have learned a lot of things like teamwork, determination, and grit. However, I have also learned compassion and have developed a service-first mentality by witnessing my lacrosse coach exhibit small acts of kindness. The characteristics that I have developed while playing sports and witnessing these small acts of kindness, have influenced me throughout my life as well as my future goals and my desired career. I first witnessed these acts of kindness directly from my lacrosse coach and the head of the lacrosse league I play in. Specifically, he would always bring a trailer full of used lacrosse equipment to practice. He would try to collect this equipment from previous lacrosse players or players who outgrew their equipment and didn’t need it anymore. His goal was to provide equipment for those kids who wanted to try or play lacrosse but couldn’t afford the equipment. In addition to the fee to join the lacrosse league, lacrosse players must buy all their protective equipment which includes shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, helmet, mouthguard, lacrosse stick, cleats and uniforms. As you can imagine, this cost can add up pretty quickly. I was always fortunate that my parents were able to provide me with equipment throughout my years of lacrosse as I grew into new sizes, wore out equipment or just wanted a new stick. As I got older, I realized this was not the case for many other kids, some of which didn’t even have cleats. However, my coach always invited those kids to “shop” in the trailer and find some equipment that would work for them so they could participate and play lacrosse. As the years went by, I could see that it was a constant challenge for the coach to keep that trailer filled with donated used or new equipment and I talked to him about a way that I could help. While helping coach youth lacrosse I noticed we often ran out of “Loaner Equipment” leaving many kids on the sideline not being able to participate. While playing lacrosse for many years, I knew there was used equipment out there in people's garages etc. that could be put to good use. I started “Relax”, a Facebook-based lacrosse donation group. People can visit the site, and tell me what they have and where they are located. I then arrange to pick up the equipment, clean and inspect it, and provide it to youth lacrosse organizations locally such as Seahawks Lacrosse Club based here in Sarasota. These experiences have reinforced my desire to have a career in service. Other characteristics I have developed in preparation to be successful are grit and determination. These have been developed throughout my years in team sports such as lacrosse and football. This has been developed both physically and mentally. Physically, by consistently working in extreme physical conditions such as exhaustion and the Florida heat and humidity. Mentally, when continuing to work as a team even in times of difficulty such as playing a more challenging team. In addition, this year I was accepted and attended the United States Coast Guard Academy summer AIM program which continued to develop my grit and determination skills while being challenged in a boot camp-type environment. Both grit and determination will support me through my college years and beyond. I believe the above experiences and values will assist me in pursuing a career where I can serve my country. My goal is to pursue a career in a government agency such as the FBI. I have grown up learning about my Shinnecock Indian Nation history and culture, while also spending summers in a small, French-speaking village in Quebec with my grandparents. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to spend time visiting my mother’s hometown of Hawaii where I was exposed to many different Asian cultures. This inspired me to take Chinese starting in middle school at Sarasota Military Academy Prep and to continue through high school Chinese 3 Honors. My belief is the more you learn about and experience other cultures, the more diverse your background becomes, and the better you can serve your community. A service-first mentality will also assist me in excelling both as a student and in my career. This is very important to me and is something that was developed by my Catholic faith and reinforced by my years as a Senior Altar Server serving with the Bishop in the Diocese of Venice.
