My name is Kaelani Martinez, and I am a proud Dominican woman pursuing a degree in Biomedical Sciences with a focus on pharmaceutical science. My story is deeply rooted in resilience, shaped by the warmth of my culture, and driven by a powerful desire to bring change to communities like the one I come from. Growing up in poverty as a first-generation student in a Hispanic household has not only influenced how I see the world—it has defined my purpose in it. In my family, we didn’t always have access to healthcare. Doctor visits were a luxury. Medications were rationed or substituted with home remedies. I watched relatives suffer from chronic illnesses like diabetes and hypertension with limited support, simply because they couldn’t afford treatment or lacked access to consistent care. These experiences sparked my interest in medicine early on—but it was never just about biology or chemistry for me. It was about justice. It was about making sure no one, regardless of where they’re born or how much money they have, is denied the right to health. My Dominican roots have given me more than a cultural identity—they have taught me the meaning of true community. In my neighborhood, we leaned on each other for survival. Food, advice, and even medicine were shared, no questions asked. That spirit of togetherness is what I carry with me into the STEM world. Science is often seen as cold and clinical, but to me, it is deeply human. It is about solving problems that affect real people. And when science is rooted in empathy, it has the power to change the world. That is why I chose to study Biomedical Sciences with a concentration in pharmaceutical development. I believe that medicine should be developed with equity in mind. In a world where pharmaceutical innovation is often driven by profit rather than need, I want to take a different path. My goal is to focus on sustainable drug development—creating medications that are not only effective, but affordable, accessible, and designed with underserved populations in mind. This means reformulating drugs in ways that reduce cost and waste, and working on delivery systems that can reach remote or resource-poor areas. My dream is to bring this vision to life by starting in Latin America, where many communities still lack access to basic medications. I want to collaborate with local scientists, pharmacists, and community leaders to build infrastructure for affordable pharmaceutical production and distribution. I also hope to educate and mentor the next generation of Latinx scientists, creating a cycle of empowerment and innovation. We cannot create inclusive medicine without inclusive leadership, and representation matters—especially in STEM. Being a Dominican girl in science has not always been easy. I’ve often felt like an outsider in academic spaces that weren’t built for people like me. But instead of being discouraged, I’ve let it fuel my determination. I am here not only to take up space, but to make space for others. I want to break barriers in medicine, and I want to do it with my community at the heart of every decision. This scholarship would allow me to continue my studies without the constant burden of financial stress, and help me focus fully on my academic and research goals. But more than that, it would be an investment in a future where medicine is truly for all—where a Dominican girl from a low-income background can help build a healthier, more equitable world. Thank you for considering my application and for supporting students who dare to dream beyond their circumstances.

Success for everyone is selective. For me what this looks like is harnessing a true understanding of what the goal needing to be accomplished ahead of me is. My great aunt once quoted “ If you’ve never commenced a project was there ever room for failure”, meaning success isn’t necessarily about mastering a skill in a particular timeframe but steadily calculating the steps that need to be taken to therefore achieve said goal. Personally I feel as if success isn’t quantified by the amount of abundant strides a persons made but through the lessons they’ve learned along the way. An example of success for me could be attending a job interview and getting turned down. In the moment it is saddening yet other opportunities lie ahead. That being if another job was offered to be with better benefits, pay and flexibility compared to the previous job I had attended the interview for that therefore is deemed as success for myself. Qualities for success include consistency, resilience, adaptability and more. Without utilizing these skills your ability to fall short of success increases. It is equivocal the lengths people go to, to find answers for ‘ How To Be More Successful ‘ while the answers lie within you. Empty manifestations are fragmented hopes without any substance if the host isn’t invested in doing the arduous work that comes with admiration of growth. With obtaining this scholarship I will have the opportunity to Alleviate the financial burden of tuition fees, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on financial stress.
