The Odyssey Paragraph (Book 5, lines 263–270): "He groaned aloud and prayed to the gods for rescue, wishing he could see Ithaca again, his own home. The dark waves crashed over him, and he gripped his raft, knowing the wind and sea would not let him rest. Yet his mind stayed steadfast, he thought of his wife and son, and through the fear and pounding surf he held on to hope, trusting that some god would guide him safely home." This passage from The Odyssey speaks to me because it captures a truth that goes beyond ancient Greece. It’s about the struggle every human faces when life feels overwhelming, and how hope and purpose can help us keep going. At this moment, Odysseus is battered by waves, alone on the sea, and terrified for his life. Yet, Homer doesn’t just describe a man fighting the ocean, he describes a human fighting fear, uncertainty, and despair. What strikes me most is that Odysseus’ strength comes not just from his physical ability, but from the way his mind clings to what matters most, his home, his wife, and his son. This paragraph reminds me that no matter how chaotic life gets, focusing on what you care about and believing in the possibility of a better outcome can carry you through even the toughest storms. I see the storm as a metaphor for the challenges we all face. Odysseus doesn’t control the waves or the wind, just as we can’t always control what life throws at us. But the way he responds, gripping the raft, staying focused, and holding onto hope is what defines him. Homer is showing that resilience is an active choice. It’s not something you passively feel it’s something you decide to embody, even when circumstances seem impossible. Reading this, I think about moments in my own life where I’ve felt “lost at sea”, times when schoolwork, responsibilities, or financial stress felt overwhelming. Like Odysseus, I’ve had to rely on inner strength and a sense of purpose to keep moving forward, reminding myself of why I started and who I am striving to be. Another element that makes this paragraph resonate is Odysseus connection to his loved ones. Thinking of his wife and son gives him the courage to keep going. Homer is showing that our motivations like our family, our community, and our dreams aren’t just sentimental. They are lifelines. They give us reason and direction. It makes me reflect on my own motivations, my family, my future career, and the impact I want to make in the lives of others. Just as Odysseus hope for home sustains him, my hope for a meaningful life helps me persevere through challenges. There’s a lesson here that courage and determination aren’t isolated traits. They are fueled by love, purpose, and connection. The paragraph also highlights the balance between human effort and forces beyond our control. Odysseus prays to the gods while holding tightly to the raft. Homer seems to be saying that while we must act with courage and determination, we also have to accept that some things are outside of our control. Life is a combination of effort, perseverance, and humility. We must know when to push, when to endure, and when to trust in something larger than ourselves. This idea feels incredibly human. We often face situations where we’ve done everything we can, yet outcomes are uncertain. Homer captures the tension between what we can control and what we cannot, reminding readers that both action and trust are essential. Finally, this passage is a meditation on hope itself. Odysseus doesn’t give up, even though the storm could easily overwhelm him. His hope is active and it drives him to act, to hold on, to survive. Homer’s message is timeless, hope is not passive or naive. It is a decision to continue, a mental and emotional anchor that gives purpose to our actions. For me, reading this is inspiring because it shows that even in the face of fear, despair, or uncertainty, we can choose to persevere, stay connected to what matters, and trust in the possibility of a better outcome. In conclusion, this moment in The Odyssey is about more than a man at sea. It is about the human spirit, the resilience we carry inside, and the hope that keeps us moving forward. Odysseus struggle with the waves mirrors the challenges we all face, and his focus on what he values, his home, his family, his purpose and it reminds us why it’s worth enduring hardship. Homer shows that heroism is not just about strength or skill, but about maintaining hope, purpose, and moral focus even when life is overwhelming. This passage has taught me that perseverance, connection, and hope are the anchors that can carry us through life’s storms, and that courage is meaningful precisely because it is tested. Like Odysseus, I am learning to face life’s challenges with steadfastness, to hold onto what matters most, and to trust that my efforts, guided by purpose and hope, can lead me to safe shores.

Service has always been a big part of who I am because I believe that giving back isn’t just about helping others, it’s about building community, fostering connection, and making a real difference in people’s lives. I try to live a life of service by showing up for others in meaningful ways, whether that’s volunteering with children, supporting teachers in classrooms, or helping out at my church. These experiences have shaped my values and taught me that even small actions can have a lasting impact. One of the most meaningful ways I serve is by volunteering at local elementary schools. I spend time helping students with reading and supporting teachers with classroom activities. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch a child gain confidence as they sound out new words or finish a challenging assignment. Seeing their excitement and knowing I played even a small role in their learning reminds me why service matters. It has taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of encouragement. Every moment I spend in the classroom is a chance to give a child confidence, curiosity, and support, all tools that will help them succeed not just in school, but in life. I’ve also volunteered extensively at my church, helping with events, outreach programs, and community initiatives. Whether it’s organizing a food drive, assisting families in need, or helping with church activities, these experiences have shown me the power of teamwork and compassion. I’ve learned that service is about consistency and intentionality, not just grand gestures. Even small contributions, like helping someone with a task or listening to their struggles can make a big difference. Volunteering at church has strengthened my sense of responsibility to my community and my desire to give back wherever I can. These experiences have shaped how I see the connection between education and service. Education has given me tools, knowledge, and perspective that I want to use to help others. I’m pursuing a degree in business with a focus on marketing because I believe marketing can be a powerful way to create positive change. It’s not just about promoting products—it’s about sharing messages, raising awareness, and connecting people to resources or solutions that matter. I hope to use my education to develop campaigns and initiatives that promote literacy, social responsibility, and opportunities for growth in my community. Combining the skills I gain from school with the hands on lessons I’ve learned through volunteering allows me to serve in ways that are both practical and meaningful. Ultimately, service is more than something I do, it’s part of who I am. Whether I’m helping a child learn to read or volunteering at my church, I strive to contribute in ways that matter. My education gives me the ability to take that impact further, applying what I’ve learned to create opportunities, inspire others, and serve communities on a larger scale. Service has shaped my values, my goals, and my vision for the future, and it will continue to guide the work I hope to accomplish throughout my life. In conclusion, service has taught me patience, empathy, responsibility, and the importance of showing up for others. My volunteer experiences at elementary schools and at church have strengthened these qualities and inspired me to continue giving back in every way I can. Through my education, I hope to expand that impact, using my skills and knowledge to serve others, support meaningful causes, and make a positive difference in the world. Living a life of service isn’t just about the work I do, it’s about the person I strive to be every day.

Education has always been more than just a series of classes or a way to earn a degree for me. It has been a guiding force, a source of motivation, and a way to shape the future I want for myself. Attending the University of Nevada, Reno has been exciting and challenging at the same time. Moving from Las Vegas to a new city for college was a big step, one that forced me to become independent, manage my time, and handle responsibilities I hadn’t faced before. That transition wasn’t always easy, but it gave me a sense of direction and made me realize just how much education can influence who I want to become and what I hope to accomplish. Academically, I have always been committed to doing my best. I’m pursuing a business degree with a focus on marketing because I love the combination of creativity and strategy it offers. Marketing is about understanding people, telling stories, and helping brands connect in meaningful ways, and I’ve found that this field aligns perfectly with my strengths and passions. Through my classes, I’ve learned how to analyze data, understand consumer behavior, and develop strategies that make an impact. Beyond the classroom, I’ve sought out workshops and seminars to expand my knowledge and gain hands on experience. Education has given me the tools to turn ideas into action, and it has helped me see a clear path toward a career that excites me. At the same time, paying for college has been a significant challenge. I’ve had to take out over $30,000 in student loans to cover tuition, textbooks, and living expenses. To overcome these challenges, I’ve learned to manage my finances carefully, prioritize my responsibilities, and actively seek out scholarships and other resources. Facing these financial pressures has taught me resilience, problem solving, and perseverance. I’ve learned that challenges are not roadblocks but they’re opportunities to grow stronger, work harder, and stay focused on my goals. Being a member of Pi Beta Phi has also shaped my college experience in meaningful ways. Pi Phi has taught me the value of leadership, integrity, and community. Education has not only guided my career path but has also shaped how I envision my future. I hope to use my degree to build a career in marketing where I can be creative, strategic, and make a difference. Future Green Leaders Scholarship
Sustainability should absolutely be a priority in business and marketing because consumers today care not just about what they buy, but about how it’s made and the impact it has on the world. Climate change, pollution, and resource shortages are real challenges that affect all of us, and businesses have a responsibility to operate in a way that’s mindful of the environment. Marketing is more than just selling a product, it’s about telling a brand’s story and connecting with people. By making sustainability a key part of that story, businesses can show that they care about more than just profits, while also inspiring their customers to make choices that support the planet. I see myself using marketing to help businesses reduce their environmental impact in meaningful ways. For me, it’s not just about promoting eco-friendly products, it’s about shaping the way people think and behave. I want to work on campaigns that highlight sustainable practices. For example, products made from recycled or responsibly sourced materials, energy efficient services, or packaging that minimizes waste. By showing customers that a company is genuinely committed to doing better for the planet, marketing can turn sustainable choices into something inspirational and accessible. I want to create messaging that doesn’t just sell a product, but encourages people to make smarter, more environmentally conscious decisions in their everyday lives. Sustainability in marketing also extends to how campaigns are executed. Traditional advertising can be wasteful, with paper, plastics, and large scale events creating unnecessary impact. In my career, I want to focus on strategies that reduce that footprint, like digital campaigns, eco-friendly materials, or smaller, intentional events that leave less waste behind. That way, the way we communicate sustainability aligns with the message itself, creating authenticity and trust with consumers. I’m also motivated by the idea of using marketing to shift culture. People often follow brands they admire, and businesses can set an example by prioritizing sustainability. I hope to work with companies that take this seriously, using marketing not just to grow sales, but to grow awareness and inspire change. Seeing a campaign make someone choose a reusable option, buy from an ethical brand, or think twice about waste is exactly the kind of impact I want to have in my career. Ultimately, sustainability in business marketing isn’t optional as it’s necessary for the future. I want to help brands communicate their values effectively, implement eco conscious strategies, and inspire positive environmental change. By combining creativity with responsibility, I can build a career that not only succeeds professionally but also contributes to a healthier planet. Marketing gives me the chance to make sustainability relatable, actionable, and exciting which is why this is exactly the kind of work I want to be doing.
Coach August and Jodi Reich Scholarship
This $500 scholarship would make a meaningful difference in helping me manage the financial burden of attending the University of Nevada, Reno. As a college student, I am responsible for covering expenses such as tuition, textbooks, and daily living costs. I have already had to take out over $30,000 in student loans to pursue my education, and every additional dollar of support helps reduce the long-term financial strain I will face after graduation. This scholarship would go directly toward purchasing required textbooks and course materials, allowing me to fully engage in my classes without the stress of financial limitations. It would also help offset basic living expenses, giving me more time to focus on my academics and campus involvement rather than worrying about how to make ends meet. Moving from Las Vegas to Reno for college was a big decision for me. Staying close to home would have been the easier option, but I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and experience something new. Being in a different city has helped me grow more independent and to be more confident in myself. The University of Nevada, Reno stood out to me because of its strong programs and the opportunities it offers for students to get involved and build real world experience. Even though it meant being farther from my family, I knew it was the right step for my future. At UNR, I’m pursuing a degree in business with a focus on marketing. I’ve always been drawn to marketing because it blends creativity with strategy. I love the idea of understanding what connects with people and using that to help businesses grow and tell their stories. Through my classes, involvement in business clubs, and attending workshops, I’ve already started building a foundation in this field, and it’s only made me more excited about my future career. What motivates me most is the opportunity to be creative while also making a real impact. I hope to work in marketing after graduation, ideally in Las Vegas, where there are so many opportunities in industries like hospitality, entertainment, and retail. Earning my degree will give me the skills, knowledge, and confidence I need to succeed in that environment. Long term, I want to build a stable and successful career, become financially independent, and give back to my community. This scholarship would be a small but meaningful step in helping me get there.
      Sarah Eber Child Life Scholarship
The most difficult adversity I have ever faced was watching my grandmother take her last breath. It is a moment that I will never forget. Not just because of the pain, but because of how deeply it changed me. Until then, adversity never felt real, like something that happened to other people. In that hospital room, it became real in a way I was completely unprepared for. My Mama Mona was the heart of our family. She was always there for me, my brother, and all of my cousins. She showed up without being asked and helped in every way she could. Whether it was watching us when our parents were busy, supporting my cousins and I at our dance recitals, or simply being a present person in our lives, she made sure none of us ever felt alone. She gave her time, energy, and love so naturally that it felt like that was just who she was. When I saw her pass away, I felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness. Someone who had always been strong for everyone else was suddenly gone, and I didn’t know how to make sense of it. In that moment, adversity felt cruel and unfair. I kept thinking about everything she had done for our family and how impossible it seemed that life could continue without her. It forced me to confront loss in a way I never had before. After the initial shock faded, I realized I couldn’t change what had happened, but I could choose how I responded. My plan of action wasn’t about fixing anything, it was about showing up. I made a conscious effort to be there for my family, especially my brother, the way my Mama had always been there for us. I checked in more, listened more, and tried to offer support even when I didn’t have the right words. At the same time, I allowed myself to grieve instead of pushing the pain aside. As time passed, I began to understand that my grandmother had taught me how to handle adversity long before I ever faced it. Through her actions, she showed me the importance of selflessness, resilience, and caring for others even when life is difficult. Whenever things felt overwhelming, I reminded myself of how she lived with patience, generosity, and strength. Even today, I plan to carry those qualities forward. This experience completely changed the way I view life. I no longer take people or time for granted. Losing my Mama made me realize how quickly everything can change and how important it is to be present for the people you love. Adversity is no longer something I only fear; it is something that can shape you, teach you, and deepen your sense of purpose. Although the loss still hurts, it has made me more compassionate and more intentional in how I live. I strive to honor my Mama Mona by showing up for others the way she always showed up for us. Facing that adversity reshaped my outlook on life and continues to guide the person I am becoming.
