Life is like a precisely crafted program—a set of instructions that defines our existence. Every line of code plays a vital role in the complex algorithm that is our reality. Much like a program's behavior can change with a single line of code, life can be flipped upside down in a single breath. The events of a particular Super Bowl Sunday placed this realization into my life, shaping my perception of life's fragility and leading me to find purpose and value in every opportunity. As the score favored the Green Bay Packers, an unexpected glitch occurred in my life's program. I found myself lying on a cold concrete floor, surrounded by panic and concern. Rushed to the emergency room, the first CT scan revealed (intraparenchymal hemorrhage/cerebral contusion) bleeding in the brain and a temporal fracture. The uncertainties and risks were daunting—brain swelling, seizures, potential damage to my senses, and an uncertain future. After being transported to Children's Hospital, we were led into a room filled with medical professionals, who promptly scheduled a repeat CT scan for 5 A.M. on Monday, February 7th. Anxiously waiting, we were welcomed to listen in as they debriefed my case. "Kadie Keslar came in by MedEvac from an outside hospital last night. The first CT scan shows bleeding in the brain and a temporal fracture. A second CT scan taken at 5 A.M. shows that the bleeding has stopped and has perhaps already begun absorbing. The temporal fracture appears stable, all vision has been regained. Neurosurgery, trauma, and ENT will confirm conditions and report accordingly." February 6th will forever hold a significant place in my heart—a reminder of the second chance I was given. Every day since then has been an opportunity to prove to others and, most importantly, to myself, that I deserve this life. I hold on to the belief that my existence is destined for greatness; living with intention and driven by a purpose greater than myself. Just as lines of code come together to create a powerful program, the experiences and challenges in my life have shaped who I am today. Reflecting on my 17 years of life, I am extremely grateful for the understanding that life is a gift, not a guarantee. This realization amplifies the importance of the value in every detail and every experience. I stand as a testament to a living legacy of past generations, and an ongoing narrative of creation. The strength and adaptability of technology mirror what I discovered within myself—the power to overcome the darkest moments and keep progressing. A Man Helping Women Helping Women Scholarship
Women in computer science face various struggles and challenges. Women are underrepresented in the field of computer science, both in the classroom and the workforce. Women are often stereotyped and discouraged from pursuing computer science. Despite these difficulties, I have chosen to pursue an education in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. I was admitted to Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science. Nearly 95% of students who apply are turned away. This means that I accomplished the near impossible. Academically, I am an average student by comparison to other applicants. I did not know if my entire portfolio would be enough to gain admission. I worked hard in and out of the classroom. I earned straight A’s. I am currently ranked 4th out of 305 students in my graduating class with a weighted GPA of a 5.0. I did not score extremely high on my SAT’s, therefore I applied without submitting my test scores. In 2022, of the 982 undergraduate students in the program, only 47 were white females. Being courageous enough to apply without fear of rejection was a strength I exhibited. The skills required are unknown, however pursuing the dream and going after it as if my life depended on it is a skill in perseverance and toughness. It took the ability to stay focused on my goal, even as I faced setbacks and social disadvantages. The possibilities of what can be discovered in this field of study when paired with AI and robotics can challenge me as a person. With the right education and passion, I know I will break the stereotypes placed on me. Scholarship Institute’s Annual Women’s Leadership Scholarship
When I was twelve years old, I stepped into a leadership role on a senior level competition cheer team as a replacement for an injured athlete, on top of already being committed to three other teams of my own. Despite being the youngest and less skilled, I brought positivity and commitment to the team. I showed the importance of perseverance by practicing at least four hours consecutively, three days a week. Others began to rely on me for guidance, not because of my skills, but due to my dedication and ability to inspire. The coaches and gym owners also started referring to me as the example to follow. I became a team leader. This experience taught me that leadership is not always about age or experience; it is about setting an example and showing that determination can overcome any challenge. In reviewing my list of extracurricular activities in its entirety, I realize that this section has a personal significance to me. The short character limit descriptions briefly define my core values and character. My involvement in extracurricular activities throughout school was influential in shaping my character as well as my outlook on leadership and involvement in positive change. I have listed extracurricular activities that demonstrate my commitment to taking on leadership roles, for personal growth, and to inspire and make a meaningful difference within my community. The opportunity to lead by example is important to me, to be a source of inspiration and encouragement for both the younger generations and my peers. Whether it is leading a group of students in a community service project, working with a team on a fundraiser event, or simply helping hand out t-shirts, my primary goal is always to create an environment of growth and collaboration. What I believe sets me apart is my dedication to not just being a member but an active agent for change. My passion for 'making things happen' extends to my commitment to organizing events, community projects, and getting involved. This drive has led to initiatives as big as establishing my school's first homecoming dance that raised $11,000, and as small as handing out recycling bins to the community. My activities list is more than a record of my extracurricular involvements; it is proof of my determination to lead meaningful change. As I take on the next chapter of my academic journey, I am eager to take these values to my college community, where I will continue to be a leader and an influence for positive transformation. I understand that not everyone has the privilege to pursue a higher education, if any education at all. Having met individuals who are less fortunate than me on a mission trip, I have no doubt that given the chance, they would make the most of it. For me, success at college goes beyond the pursuit of a specific degree, career goals, or personal aspirations. It is about embracing experiences, meeting new people, and discovering more about myself and the world around me. I see each moment as a steppingstone to my success, learning from every stumble, and refusing to be defeated by setbacks. This commitment is fundamental to my personal growth and development. A successful leadership experience for me involves not just personal growth, but also pushing beyond my boundaries. The college I chose has a vibrant community that provides the perfect platform to meet new people, build connections, and network with individuals who are as passionate and diverse as the university itself. These interactions develop inspiration and knowledge, offering countless opportunities for my future.

235 miles into our 300-mile trip to tour Virginia Tech, my dad and I stop for a quick tour of 'The Greenbrier' in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Just as we are getting out of the car and preparing to make our way inside, I hear a whistling noise coming from one of our tires. My dad is talking to the parking lot attendant at the time, so I wait for him to finish and then let him know my suspicion. I am thinking, 'What are we going to do?' There is a giant screw in the front passenger tire. Dad has a placid look on his face, as is typical in most circumstances. He is not worried. We would tend to the situation after the tour. We decided to tackle the situation head-on. We quickly plug the hole in the tire and manage to get back on the road without much delay. My dad is special to me in many ways. He is a humble man with a great personality. He uses ordinary circumstances to teach life lessons, both big and small. This lesson is not about how to change the tire on the car (he definitely taught me how it was done) but about how to remain calm, stay focused on the task at hand, and prioritize– keeping us moving in the right direction. My dad is an engineer by career but a jack of all trades. When I was a little girl, he noticed that anytime he got a tool set out, I was right beside him, eager to participate and learn. Anything involving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics has always been intriguing to me. He challenged me with projects, from finishing patterns and puzzles when I was three to solving complicated mathematics equations when I was ten. Now, we are programming the Nintendo Mario Brothers game for machine learning for a project I have for the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. My dad and I can often be found with a whiteboard and a marker, solving equations, or figuring out how to solve a problem. We most certainly have a whiteboard along for this trip, as well as a few problems we would work out. This type of bonding is irreplaceable. The time I get to spend with dad is priceless. He understands the way my brain is wired, so we can talk for hours without being bored. My dad has a delightful sense of humor, quick wit, and the ability to effortlessly craft one-liners. He has a knack for injecting humor into any situation and a remarkable ability to keep the atmosphere light and entertaining. As mile marker 300 approaches, my dad locates the visitor center, and we park the car. It is a beautiful day in Virginia, prompting us to step outside the car and explore the campus before the official tour begins. We check the tire, which seems to be holding up just fine. We grab a cup of coffee and a Mt. Dew and reflect on the day and invaluable time we have spent together. In these moments, I realize that the miles traveled are not just a measure of distance but a testament to the bonds forged, lessons learned, and the unwavering support of my dad. Our journey, marked not only by the miles traveled but also the laughter shared, the challenges conquered, and the dreams envisioned, is a reminder of the irreplaceable connection we share. I will always carry with me the memories of this trip and the strength of our father-daughter bond that transcends any destination.

During many summers spent volunteering at Hydrate Kids Camp, my perspective shifted from merely participation to a collective attempt for community impact. It now is not just about volunteering; it is about uniting with others to make a meaningful difference. Volunteering at church camp introduced me to the concept of community in its truest form. As we work together to organize and bring about various camp activities, a strong sense of fellowship emerges among the volunteers. It has become evident that the success of our collective efforts relied on the collaboration and unity of the entire group. This sense of community extends to the volunteers including the campers, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels connected and valued. While the primary goal of volunteering is to make a positive impact on others, the experience has become a journey of personal growth. Engaging in tasks such as organizing details, leading activities, and participating in group discussions has pushed me out of my comfort zone. The challenges I face during camp allow me to develop valuable skills such as leadership, communication, and adaptability. The realization that personal growth is intertwined with the well-being of the community highlights the relationship between individual and collective development. Volunteering at church camp amplifies the importance of selflessness and giving back to the community. The activities throughout the week are designed not only for personal enjoyment but with the intention of creating a positive impact on the lives of others. Whether it is organizing team leader meetings, providing mentorship, or simply being a source of support for those in need, the focus is consistently on contributing to the well-being of the community. The emphasis on giving fostered a culture where individuals were inspired to prioritize the needs of others above their own. One of the most powerful lessons learned from my experience at church camp was the impact of small, collective efforts. Each volunteer's contribution, no matter how seemingly insignificant, plays a crucial role in the overall success of the camp. This concept extends beyond the camp – in the real world, small acts of kindness, when multiplied, have the potential to create a significant and lasting impact on the community. Hydrate Kids Camp brought together volunteers from diverse backgrounds, each contributing unique skills, experiences, and perspectives. This diversity enriched the overall volunteering experience, creating an environment where individuals learned from one another. The unity that emerged from this diversity is a testament to the power of collective action. By uniting individuals with different strengths and ideas, Hydrate became a home for the community working towards a common goal. Volunteering for church camp in the summer has been a transformative experience that goes beyond individual growth to encompass the creation of a supportive and united community. The journey has emphasized the importance of selflessness, community-building, and the positive impact that can be achieved when individuals unite for a common cause. As I reflect on this experience, it is clear that the true essence of volunteering lies in the collective effort to make a difference in the lives of others, ultimately contributing to the betterment of the community as a whole.
