Selective Mutism Step Forward Scholarship
My name is Kacey House, a long-term selectively mute female from Alabama. Growing up, I was often seen as shy, quiet, and lazy. Nevertheless, at the age of five, I was diagnosed with Selective Mutism. As I grew older, I never once spoke in school and was often seen as the 'quiet girl.' At the age of nine, I was sent to a therapist who had no idea how to help me and just saw me as a 'case study,' causing me to regress further. When middle school came around, I had lost all my friends and became lonely, scared, and quiet as ever. This left me with a full-time ability to focus on my studies. From day one of studying, I knew college was my ultimate goal and not once did I falter. In many cases, my SM affected my ability to speak up for myself and/or give presentations in class. This broke my pride and caused me to fully devote myself to making those around me aware of the social and individual struggles of Selective Mutism.
Now, almost thirteen years later, I still have not spoken a word at school due to anxiety. However, I have lifted myself above others to create my future goals in life to revolve less around my incapability but more around my wants for my life. In the past I have allowed my education to falter due to social anxiety, therefore, today, I stand up and hold myself to higher standards to pursue a higher education. Sports Media has always been a passion of mine; in recent years, I have been introduced to less of the "Why's" and more of the "How's" on how to become a Sports Media Manager. I grew up in a sports household, always out the door for one of my sister's tournaments. I understand the socializing of sports and how the media world revolves around output. Without fear, I have learned how to put myself out in the world without knowing what is next.
Taking each day at a time, I have learned how to be passionate, confident, and driven by myself and those around me. For years, everyone tried to tell me who I was, but none of them knew me. They do not know the hardworking, kind, joking quiet girl that loves to be an outsider. Everyday is a mystery to me, however, by putting myself in uncomfortable positions, I have found my true self beneath the layers of isolation throughout the years. I am proud of who I have become and I cannot wait to further my education on a new, blank chapter.
