I'm an individual who loves hiking and exploring nature. My current goals are to hike a stunning mountain trail abroad and play tennis competitively in college. Ever since I took a robotics class in middle school, I've been interested in pursuing a Degree in Computer Science. Through a dual enrollment program at my high school, I'll be graduating this summer with both my high school diploma and Associate's Science Degree. I live in a single-parent household, and I'm determined to manage my finances while preparing for college. To achieve my financial goals, I'm working hard to maintain my grades, work part-time, and find scholarship opportunities.

Growing up in a single-parent household comes with its own set of challenges. My mom worked hard to provide for our family, and I often felt the weight of responsibility on my young shoulders. I struggled with feelings of loneliness and guilt, looking for an escape, a place where I could just be a kid. That's when tennis came into my life.
My mom introduced me to tennis when I was 11. At first, I just watched in awe as players battled it out on the court. But soon, I was hooked and I wanted to play. I begged my mom to let me play, and she said no as tennis is not a cheap sport in the very least. Though, after a few months of proving my interest was real, she finally said yes.
Stepping onto the court for the first time felt like entering a whole new world. I was determined to get good, to make my mom proud. Tennis quickly became my passion, my escape. I practiced almost every day. Driven by the goal of being the best I could be. Middle school was a time of growth both on and off the court. I made friends with other tennis players, and we supported each other through wins and losses. Tennis taught me about hard work, discipline, and perseverance. It gave me a sense of purpose and belonging I didn't find anywhere else.
But in high school, things got tough. The COVID-19 pandemic hit, and I got a bad elbow injury. I had to stop playing tennis, which felt like losing a part of myself. That year was really hard. I felt lost and confused with life. My thoughts made me not want to play again. Eventually, I started playing again. It wasn't the same at first – I had to take it slow and easy. But as I got back into the swing of things, I realized that tennis was still there for me. It was still my escape, my happy place.
Looking back, I see that tennis helped me through the tough times of growing up in a single-parent household. It gave me a positive outlet for my energy and emotions. It taught me valuable life skills and introduced me to a community that became like a second family.
I'm grateful for that day when my mom handed me a tennis racket. It set me on a path that's shaped me into the person I am today. Tennis started as a hobby, but it's become so much more. It's my passion, my safest place, and my life's reflection.

WinnerMy affair with tennis began when I first witnessed the sport's essence. Sitting courtside on a cold metal bench, entranced by my mom's spirited matches with other adults in their exclusive as she called it “adult scrubs” league. Those mesmerizing experiences marked the birth of my tennis dreams. Filled with excitement, I approached my mom with a simple request: "Can I play tennis, too?" Her response, she encouraged me to watch more, to gauge if my enthusiasm was more than a passing phase or whim. After three months of dedicated spectating, she finally granted me the chance to step onto the court and she paid for tennis lessons.
Throughout my middle school years, my tennis journey was defined by a single, unwavering goal: to surpass my mom's tennis prowess. This ambition became the foundation of my passion for the sport and has shaped my identity to this day. I spent countless hours practicing my serves, forehands, and backhands. The thrill of improving my skills, step by step, fueled my dedication to beat my mom on the court. Along the way, I created meaningful friendships with others my age who shared my passion for tennis. Our days weren't just about matches; they were about shared laughter, setbacks, and the excitement of competition. Surprisingly, our bonds extended beyond the tennis court (with occasional corn-maze trips and go-cart racing dates) demonstrating how the sport could spawn off-court moments of gaiety.
Tennis has been a mirror reflecting my character, even during life's bitter chapters. Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, I faced an agonizing tennis elbow injury that turned even the simplest tasks, such as lifting a coffee mug, into a painful ordeal. Coupled with the pandemic and this setback, I had no choice but to take a two-year hiatus from tennis. That break laid bare the profound impact tennis had on my life. The void left by the absence of matches and practices echoed in the emptiness of my social calendar. Many connections within the tennis community waned, and I found myself adrift, uninspired, and struggling for balance. It was a period of self-reflection, a time to truly appreciate the role tennis played in my life.
After healing and resuming my tennis journey, a transformative shift occurred in how I perceived the sport. I began to play for enjoyment and not “just to win”. Tennis became my refuge, a stress reliever, a steadying force for my emotions, and a vehicle for maintaining physical fitness. I cherished the cool feel of the racquet grip, the sound of the ball striking the strings, and the satisfying thump of a successful serve. These sensory experiences became more cherished.
My interactions with tennis and its community not only taught me about diverse personalities on and off the court but also insights about myself. To my younger self, tennis was a vehicle to surpass my mom, but as I matured, It transcended being a passion; it became a wonderful journey. Tennis is not just a sport, it's an intricate tapestry of self-discovery, memories, and friendships that continue to enrich my life with each rally and each match. Tennis has imparted lessons in perseverance, a quality akin to the enduring spirit required in tennis matches, a lesson I can now apply to life's twists and turns. As I continue to play tennis, I aim to extend this ethos of self-improvement to my other passions in life, understanding that one can stumble upon something and leave armed with prescriptions that can lead to a better version of yourself.
Lyndsey Scott Coding+ Scholarship
I aspire to become a skilled computer programmer in my professional life. This ambition sparked in middle school when I stumbled upon a YouTube video of a person creating Minecraft mods. Like most typical middle schoolers the “8-hours later” experience left me fascinated, and I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in computers.
During a conversation with my guidance counselor about my career options, she suggested that I take a programming class in high school to see if this field was the right fit for me. Fortunately, my high school offered a basic programming class. The experience of writing C++ code sealed the deal for me. Designing and problem-solving code problems further motivated me to pursue this field. My ultimate goal is to create games and other digital solutions. I believe that this field will not only help me express my creativity but also bring meaningful things to others that can help people in the future.
Apart from my career goals, I am also passionate about traveling and experiencing different cultures. When I was 16, my mom took me on an Amtrak train trip that traveled across the US from Virginia to Washington State. During the trip, we saw various landscapes, cultures, and lifestyles. However, the best part of the experience was the significant revelation and deep understanding I gained about people. As I met some of the most genuine and kind-hearted individuals during my travels, I realized how diverse and colorful the world truly is. Each person I encountered, with their unique personalities and backgrounds, showcased the rich tapestry of human experiences, an eye-opening journey from state to state. This helped me gain a better understanding of the many different ways of connecting with people and experiencing their unique perspectives on the world. In the future, I would like to travel internationally and explore other cultures and lifestyles.
Moreover, my travel goals are related to my computer science goals. The impact of computer science spans the globe, enabling the creation of applications that can cater to diverse people. By traveling to different parts of the world, I can gain first-hand insights into the many user experiences and cater programs on a global scale to specific cultures. In essence, my aspirations in computer science and travel intersect with each other, offering me a unique opportunity to blend technical aspects with an understanding of cultural impacts and a global contribution.
