Compassion and empathy are two values that play an integral role in my long-term goals, as well as my daily life. As an International Affairs and Economics major, I have learned about humanitarian issues occurring in both the U.S. and around the world where people cannot reach their potential. Because of my exposure to crises like conflict, poverty, and discrimination, I discovered my passion to contribute to my community in preparation for a career where I can positively impact on others on a more global scale through economic development. My goals of empowering people to be self-sufficient from a policy perspective are a result of my innate desire to help others have the opportunities to grow and learn, so my endeavors throughout college have followed this thread. From my first year in college, I have served as a mentor in my school's chapter of DREAM (Directing through Recreation, Education, Adventure, and Mentoring). Having the opportunity to work with a diverse group of individuals who share a similar passion for helping others has enabled me to form meaningful connections with not only the children we serve but also younger mentors. We lead the children through programs like arts and crafts lessons, Field Day, museum trips, and many more. These volunteer days are a time for them to have fun and experience activities they may not normally have access to for any reason. Consistently dedicating 7 hours a week to a large group and one-on-one programming has truly been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in college, and it has allowed the children to see us as a reliable resource for however long they need us. As a matched mentor to a 10th grader, I can provide guidance as part of his support system as he navigates the challenges of high school and growing older. Being one of the older members of his family in the group we mentor, he confides in me when he's having issues, whether it is related to school or he is simply not having a good day. If he struggles academically, I can help him receive tutoring through DREAM or walk him through possible options to improve his performance. Through our time together, I have witnessed his growth from being more reserved to more outgoing and extroverted, so he is more willing to share about his life in the time when we are not together. When we meet each week, the joy is automatic because we know whatever the day holds will be enjoyable. We have also been able to work with conflict resolution and problem-solving, skills he will be able to take into all other aspects of his life and teach his younger cousins and siblings. Seeing the smiles of the DREAM children shows me that the volunteer work my group does is impactful. As I have seen the children mature and go through changes in the past few semesters, I know that continuing to show compassion and empathy will not be in vain.

Making a difference isn't necessarily defined by changing the entire world and resolving all its issues, but it can simply mean having a positive impact on a local community, as well. Studying international affairs and staying updated regarding world events has shown me the attempts of policymakers to combat major crises our global society is threatened with as a whole, such as human rights abuses, food insecurity, and major wealth disparity that prevents certain populations from having equal opportunities to grow and develop. This may very well be a path I consider following after my studies come to an end. However, on a more micro level, these issues are dealt with through the efforts of dedicated individuals comprised of selflessness and kindness, even if they cannot create as broad of an impact as larger institutions. At the moment, this is where I have put forth my commitment to ensuring the bright future of my communities. Grassroots organizations have stood out to me as an easy and effective way to fulfill my passion for helping others, and I hope my commitment to helping others will allow me to continue discovering a path where I can positively affect a larger range of people. With hands-on engagement with other volunteers and beneficiaries, I can truly experience the culmination of progress like-minded individuals can accomplish when they intend to create change. I've grown more empathetic towards people of diverse backgrounds through traveling and daily interactions at college, and I continue my aspirations of being able to utilize my education and opportunities to permit others to pursue their goals through volunteering. Rather than just studying the history of hardships others have had to endure due to factors beyond their control, I can witness firsthand the stories of resilient people who require aid to live the lives every person deserves, as well as better understanding how the cycle of marginalization can be eliminated. Essentially, I am inspired by the stories of people who have worked to establish themselves and their families, and I hope to make the process of success easier for those who have been less fortunate. For the duration of my academic career, I have sought out opportunities to become involved in assisting less-represented communities, such as those with lower income and those with special needs. With organizations at Northeastern University like Peace Through Play and DREAM, inc., I can serve as a mentor to children growing up in the Greater Boston Area and consistently act as a positive role model to the future of our society. As a member of One for the World, I can teach others about the impact of donating one percent of one's annual income in allowing reputable organizations to counter issues like Malaria and malnutrition. The byproducts of my involvement within these organizations have been the spread of our mission statements to others to seek further support from other community members not as closely involved in the activities and the education of people interested in community development, also. Ultimately, giving back to the community has reinforced my interest in world affairs and vice-versa, and I will continue to influence my community to work coherently to accomplish collective success.
