Understanding the nature of our universe is not merely an intellectual pursuit for me; it's a deeply personal journey rooted in my cultural heritage and driven by a quest for knowledge and meaning. As a young Mexican Native American man, I have been raised with a profound respect for the interconnectedness of all life and a curiosity about the cosmos that stretches back through generations of indigenous wisdom. In our traditions, the stars are not just distant points of light in the sky; they are ancestors guiding us through the complexities of existence. My upbringing has instilled in me a belief that the universe holds secrets that can illuminate our path forward, both individually and collectively. This perspective compels me to advocate for a deeper exploration of the cosmos, not only to satisfy our scientific curiosity but also to enrich our spiritual and cultural understanding. One of the fundamental ideas I hope to employ in this pursuit is the concept of interconnectedness. Indigenous wisdom teaches us that everything in the universe is interconnected, from the smallest atom to the largest galaxy. By studying the cosmos, we can gain insights into the universal principles that govern our existence and deepen our appreciation for the intricate web of life that sustains us all. Another concept I am passionate about exploring is the notion of multiple perspectives. Indigenous cultures have long embraced diverse ways of knowing and understanding the world. By integrating indigenous perspectives with modern scientific methods, we can foster a more holistic approach to studying the universe. This inclusive approach not only broadens our intellectual horizons but also encourages greater collaboration and mutual respect across cultural boundaries. Furthermore, I am eager to explore the concept of sustainability in the context of space exploration and cosmology. Indigenous cultures have thrived for millennia by living in harmony with the natural world, and their knowledge of sustainable practices can offer valuable insights as we venture into space. By promoting sustainability in our exploration of the cosmos, we can ensure that future generations inherit a thriving and balanced universe. Lastly, I am committed to advocating for greater diversity and representation in the field of astronomy and cosmology. Indigenous communities and other underrepresented groups have historically been marginalized in STEM fields. By promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, we can harness the full spectrum of human talent and creativity to tackle the most pressing questions about the nature of our universe. In conclusion, my journey to understand the nature of our universe is informed by a deep reverence for indigenous wisdom, a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, and a passion for promoting sustainability and diversity. By embracing these ideas and concepts, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and expansive understanding of the cosmos—one that honors diverse ways of knowing and fosters a deeper connection to the universe and each other. With the support of this scholarship, I am eager to continue my studies and pursue research that advances our understanding of the universe while honoring the rich tapestry of human experience and knowledge.

      Simon Strong Scholarship
As a Mexican Native American young man, adversity has been a companion on my journey, shaping my resilience and determination to overcome challenges and pursue my dreams. One significant instance of adversity occurred during my junior year of high school when my family faced financial hardship. Growing up, my parents worked tirelessly to provide for our family, instilling in me a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the sacrifices they made. However, circumstances changed suddenly when my father lost his job due to company downsizing. Overnight, our stable financial situation became uncertain, and the looming prospect of not being able to afford basic necessities, let alone my college education, cast a shadow over my aspirations. In the face of this adversity, I confronted feelings of fear and uncertainty. However, I chose to channel these emotions into action rather than succumb to despair. I took on a part-time job after school and during weekends to contribute to our household expenses. This experience taught me the value of hard work and perseverance, as I juggled academics with work responsibilities, often sacrificing leisure time to ensure my family's needs were met. Moreover, I sought guidance and support from my teachers and mentors, who encouraged me to apply for scholarships and financial aid opportunities. Their belief in my potential fueled my determination to excel academically despite the added responsibilities at home. Through diligent research and countless essay revisions, I I am working to secure several scholarships that alleviate the financial burden on my family and allowed me to continue pursuing my educational goals. This adversity has profoundly shaped my character and outlook on life. It taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness in navigating challenges. I learned that setbacks can be catalysts for growth and self-discovery, fostering a sense of empathy and humility that I carry with me in all aspects of my life. To someone facing similar circumstances, I would offer the following advice: Firstly, acknowledge your emotions and fears, but do not let them paralyze you. Use them as fuel to drive your determination and resilience. Secondly, seek support from your community, whether it's family, friends, teachers, or mentors. They can offer guidance, encouragement, and practical assistance to help you navigate difficult times. Thirdly, take proactive steps towards finding solutions. Whether it's applying for scholarships, seeking financial aid, or exploring part-time work opportunities, be proactive in shaping your future despite the challenges. Lastly, remember that adversity is not a measure of your worth or potential. Every setback is an opportunity for growth and learning. Stay focused on your goals, maintain a positive mindset, and believe in your ability to overcome obstacles. In conclusion, overcoming adversity has strengthened my resolve to succeed and reinforced my commitment to making a positive impact in my community. I am grateful for the lessons learned and the growth experienced, and I look forward to utilizing my education and experiences to contribute meaningfully to society while honoring my cultural heritage as a Mexican Native American young man.

These traditions are not merely rituals but embody a way of life that emphasizes respect for elders, stewardship of the land, and a deep spiritual connection to nature. My family has been instrumental in nurturing these values, teaching me stories of our ancestors and instilling in me a profound sense of pride in my heritage. One of the most impactful cultural events for me has been our annual powwow. The powwow is a time of celebration where tribes from across the region gather to honor our shared traditions through dance, music, and feasting. Participating in powwows has but has also connected me with a broader community of Native youth who share similar cultural experiences and aspirations. However, my journey as a Native American young man has not been without its challenges. Throughout my schooling, I have encountered stereotypes and misconceptions about Native peoples that have sometimes made me feel misunderstood or marginalized. Navigating these stereotypes has required resilience and a steadfast belief in the value of my cultural heritage. Despite these challenges, I have been fortunate to have mentors and elders who have encouraged me to embrace my identity proudly and to use my voice to educate others about the richness and diversity of Native cultures. Academically, I have excelled in subjects that align with my passion for environmental science and indigenous studies. These fields allow me to explore the intersection of traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary environmental issues, offering solutions rooted in both science and cultural wisdom. My academic pursuits are not just about personal achievement but are driven by a desire to contribute to solutions that benefit both my community and the broader society. Looking ahead to my college experience at the University of Oregon, I am eager to further expand my knowledge and skills while continuing to uphold and celebrate my Native heritage. I am particularly drawn to the university's programs that promote diversity and inclusion, as well as opportunities to engage in research and community outreach. My goal is to become a leader who advocates for Native rights, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation, ensuring that future generations can inherit a world where Native voices are heard and respected. In conclusion, my life as a Native American young man has been shaped by a deep connection to my cultural roots, a commitment to academic excellence, and a determination to contribute positively to my community and society at large. I am ready to embark on this new chapter at the University of Oregon, where I hope to continue growing personally, academically, and culturally, while making a meaningful impact on the world around me.

My grandfather is someone I admire, and inspired me to pursue further education. He was the first person in our family to be a college graduate and have a successful business career. He attended the university of Notre Dame. He always told me about the importance of education, and how college would help me to achieve my dreams. Another thing that we had a connection with his sports knowledge. We both have great memories and can remember details and facts when it comes to the world. This made a great connection for our relationship. We always spoke regularly about school and sports. He played baseball, his whole life, including while he was at Notre Dame. This helped me make a connection to the sport of baseball. We would attend baseball games together when I was younger. Before he passed away, he told me to continue to make education and sports priority in my life since they were my passions. I have always been good at public speaking, even though I get very nervous when I do it. I started my public speaking career in the fifth grade when a teacher noticed that I was sitting in the stands commentating the game for the fans. I had this natural ability to explain what was going on while adding a little humor to the commentary. For some reason something comes over, and even though I am nervous and scared on the inside what comes out very confident and organized. I feel my grandfather has motivated me in this area by being by my side, even though he is no longer with us. In high school I participated on the mock trial team. This was a great experience because it gave me practice in public speaking and debate. I really enjoyed participating in mock trial and feel it is something that has given me a good experience to know what a career in law could be like. I would love to focus on sports law and hope negotiate contracts for professional athletes. This would allow me to combine two things that I am passionate about and work with professional athletes at the same time. I would love to pursue a career in law through higher education. This will be a long and expensive educational journey and any support I can get to help me achieve this dream would be greatly appreciated. I enjoy participating in debates, and the scholarship could help me reach my goal.
