My name is Justin Martinez, and I am a senior at North Shore Senior High School in Houston, Texas. As a first-generation college student, I am committed to pursuing higher education and a career in cybersecurity. My interest in technology began with curiosity about how computers and digital systems work, which grew into a passion for programming, networking, and information security.
Throughout high school, I have taken advantage of opportunities to strengthen my academic and technical skills. I have participated in STEM programs, robotics activities, and programming courses that helped me develop problem-solving, teamwork, and critical-thinking abilities. I have also gained experience with Python programming and Linux systems while exploring different areas of technology.
In addition to my high school coursework, I have completed dual-credit classes through San Jacinto College, earning college credits while preparing for higher education. These experiences have helped me develop discipline, time-management skills, and a strong work ethic.
My goal is to earn a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity and help protect organizations and individuals from cyber threats. One of the most frustrating failures I have experienced happened when I was first learning programming. At the time, I was excited to explore Python and computer science because I had become fascinated by how software could solve problems and automate tasks. I believed that if I followed the instructions carefully and worked hard, everything would eventually work. I quickly learned that technology is rarely that simple.
During a programming assignment, I spent days trying to get my code to run correctly. Every time I thought I had solved the problem, another error message appeared. I checked my code over and over, compared it to examples, and tried different solutions, but nothing seemed to work. The more time I spent on it, the more frustrated I became. I started wondering whether I was really cut out for programming. Seeing other students make progress while I remained stuck made me feel even more discouraged.
As someone who is neurodivergent, I have often had to work through challenges that require extra patience and persistence. When I encounter something difficult, it can be easy to become overwhelmed, especially when progress feels slow. At that moment, programming felt impossible. I had invested so much time and effort, yet I had very little to show for it. It would have been easy to give up and tell myself that technology simply was not for me.
Instead, I decided to take a step back and change my approach. Rather than trying to solve everything at once, I broke the problem into smaller pieces. I tested one section of the code at a time, carefully reviewed the logic, and researched solutions online. I read documentation, watched tutorials, and learned how to troubleshoot more effectively. Slowly, I began to understand not only what was wrong but also why it was wrong.
After many failed attempts, I finally found the issue. The solution turned out to be a small mistake that I had overlooked repeatedly. I remember feeling relieved, but I also realized that the most important thing I gained was not a working program. What I gained was confidence. I had proven to myself that I could work through a difficult problem without quitting.
That experience changed the way I think about failure. Before then, I viewed failure as a sign that I was not good enough. Now, I see it as part of the learning process. In technology, failure is unavoidable. Programs crash, code contains bugs, and systems do not always behave as expected. Every challenge presents an opportunity to learn something new. The people who succeed are not the ones who never fail; they are the ones who keep trying after they fail.
This lesson extends beyond programming. As a first-generation college student, I have faced many situations where I had to figure things out on my own, from navigating dual-credit coursework to preparing for college admissions and scholarships. Each obstacle has required persistence and self-motivation.
Today, that "never give up" mindset is one of the main reasons I am drawn to information technology and cybersecurity. Cybersecurity professionals face new challenges every day and must constantly adapt to evolving threats. I enjoy the process of solving problems, learning from mistakes, and continuing to improve. My experiences have taught me that success is not about avoiding failure. It is about refusing to let failure stop you from moving forward. That belief continues to drive me as I pursue a future in cybersecurity and work toward achieving my educational and career goals.

What interests me most about the technology field is that it combines creativity with problem-solving. Technology is constantly evolving, which means there is always something new to learn. I enjoy the challenge of understanding how systems work, finding solutions to technical problems, and discovering ways technology can improve people's lives. Cybersecurity is especially interesting to me because it requires both technical knowledge and critical thinking. As technology becomes more important in our daily lives, protecting information and digital systems has become essential.
Throughout high school, I have actively looked for opportunities to learn more about technology and gain hands-on experience. One of the most meaningful experiences has been participating in robotics activities. Through robotics, I learned how engineering, programming, and teamwork come together to solve real-world problems. Building and programming robots required patience, creativity, and collaboration with other students. These experiences taught me that successful projects depend not only on technical skills but also on communication and teamwork.
I have also participated in several STEM programs that helped expand my understanding of technology. Through the SHPE Pre-College STEM Labs program, I had the opportunity to explore different STEM fields while developing leadership and problem-solving skills. I also participated in the Institute for Computing in Research's Serious Programming Course, where I gained valuable experience learning programming concepts and strengthening my technical abilities. These experiences challenged me to think critically and helped confirm my interest in pursuing a technology-related career.
Programming has become one of my favorite areas of study. I have learned Python and have spent time exploring Linux systems and computer technology outside of school. One thing I enjoy about programming is that it teaches persistence. Hi my name is Justin, as a first-generation college student, I have learned that achieving success often requires persistence and determination. My family has faced financial challenges, and the cost of college is a significant concern. In addition, I am neurodivergent and have had to overcome challenges related to learning, communication, and navigating educational environments. There were times when I struggled with skills that seemed to come naturally to other students, and I often had to work harder to reach the same goals. However, these experiences taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of never giving up.
Rather than allowing these obstacles to define me, I used them as motivation to continue growing. Throughout high school, I challenged myself by participating in STEM programs, robotics activities, and computer programming courses. I also enrolled in dual-credit classes through San Jacinto College to begin earning college credits while still in high school. These experiences pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me build confidence in my abilities.
My passion for technology developed from a curiosity about how computers work and grew into an interest in cybersecurity. I enjoy solving problems, learning new technical skills, and understanding how technology can be used to protect people and organizations. One way I have made a positive difference in my school community is by helping classmates and younger students develop an interest in technology and STEM. Through my participation in robotics, programming courses, and STEM enrichment programs, I have often shared what I learned with other students who were unfamiliar with technology or lacked confidence in their abilities.
As I gained experience with programming, robotics, and computer systems, I noticed that many students viewed technology as difficult or intimidating. Rather than keeping my knowledge to myself, I took the initiative to assist classmates when they struggled with assignments, explain concepts in a simpler way, and encourage them to keep trying when they became frustrated. Whether helping troubleshoot a programming problem, explaining how a robot was built, or sharing resources that helped me learn, I wanted others to see that technology was something they could succeed in as well.
One example occurred during robotics and STEM activities when students worked together on technical projects. I regularly collaborated with team members, answered questions, and helped solve problems that arose during the design and programming process. By working together, we were able to complete projects more effectively while creating an environment where students felt comfortable asking for help and learning from one another.
The impact of these efforts extended beyond completing assignments or projects. Several students became more engaged in STEM activities and gained confidence in their abilities. Seeing others become excited about technology reinforced my belief that education can create opportunities and open doors for future success.
This experience taught me valuable lessons about leadership and service. I learned that making a difference does not always require a large organization or formal volunteer program. Sometimes, positive change begins with taking the time to help one person understand a difficult concept or encouraging someone who is struggling.
