Bio

Hello! My name is Julissa Quinonez and I am a first-generation college student. My professional goal is to become an animator. I want to bring my creations to life through 2D and 3D rendering. Art is something I'm very passionate about and it's always been an interest of mine that has remained for many years. I would also like to make a positive impact in my community, using art to bring to light topics such as the importance of mental health and representation. I primarily express myself through art which has helped me in times of need. I have a deep appreciation for the arts. I am bilingual and proficient in both Spanish and English. I pride myself in being very involved with my community and culture, although that wasn't always the case when I was younger, as I matured and educated myself, I soon came to realize the importance of an education and the beauty of my culture, I'd like to think I'm a bit more involved now. Additionally, I appreciate all the sacrifices my parents have made to support my siblings and me. Since my parents did not have the same opportunities growing up as I do now. My greatest life goal is to achieve my goals all while making my parents proud. Of course, all while serving my community and improving myself as a person, and learning more about those around me. I want to thank the donors who come across my profile. I sincerely appreciate the opportunities that come my way.

My favorite piece of art I've created so far has to be my most recent one, which is a mask inspired by the traditional holiday, Día de Los Muertos. The mask is entirely made up of cardboard including the white elements seen in the picture below. Of course with the help of large amounts of hot glue, I was able to piece together this cardboard mask and although it did require a lot of attention to detail. For it to not look flat and more alive, I did have an incredible time creating this piece. I'm very proud of it and of the fact that I was able to create something inspired by my culture. I should say both of my cultures since it's a holiday celebrated all over Latin America. Celebrated in both El Salvador and Mexico, during the first two days of November in which are for both adults and children. Growing up in the United States I was able to witness and explore many different cultural experiences including my own which is what prompted me to pick this theme for my piece, I wanted to showcase a bit more of my culture and how much I appreciated having my parents passed down their way of life, which includes art, beliefs, traditions, etc. This art piece was created because I was given a task to make a mask using only cardboard, and I thought what better way to do that than creating something I'm not only familiar with but also celebrating each year within the combination of both my cultures. I will admit that it was very challenging seeing as to how I was using a medium I have never thought of using before this year. Of course, this did cause me to be apprehensive at the beginning of the process but soon enough I got the hang of it and slowly let my creativity take over. With this in mind, I was able to create the skull all while contemplating the different elements and patterns I would add to the front of the mask. I also wanted to corporate some sort of fabric and color into the mask, amid making sure it was wearable enough which is why I searched for more inspiration and asked for the help of my parents who gladly gave me some pointers. Since they grew up surrounded by this traditional holiday in their own home countries. Their perspective gave me the ability to envision what I would like my mask to look like in the end and although I'm a bit regretful that I did not add a bit more, I'm still proud of what inspired me to create this piece.
