The perspective I have on life today is entirely unrecognizable compared to the person I was in 2019. I no longer live shrouded in fear or hesitation; instead, I take chances. Surviving the darkest corners of human experience has taught me just how fragile and valuable time is, and I refuse to waste another moment of it. Moving from the passenger seat of addiction into the driver’s seat of my own life completely transformed my purpose. Today, I serve as a case manager for the county, a role that allows me to turn my past pain into a resource for others. Every single day, I look into the eyes of individuals who are standing exactly where I used to stand. Because I survived the fire, I am uniquely equipped to help them navigate theirs. I assist them in securing stable, sober living environments and provide crucial psychoeducation on why recovery is vital. I can explain the mechanics of addiction not just from a textbook, but from lived experience. I could not save my partner, but through my own survival and recovery, I am now helping to save others. My past did not ruin my future; it defined my purpose.

Growing up, I never quite fit into the neat little boxes society built for girls my age. While the other girls were trading lip gloss, discussing fashion, and forming intricate social hierarchies, I was covered in dirt, nursing a fresh scrape from my skateboard, or lost deep within the pages of a sketchbook. I did not set out to be "weird" or "awkward," nor was I trying to make a statement. I was simply being myself, but in a world that demands conformity, authenticity often looks like defiance. My comfort zone was the outdoors. I was a textbook tomboy, finding a sense of freedom on the pavement and among the trees that I could never find in a classroom or a shopping mall. My skateboard was my prized possession and my primary vehicle for self expression. I loved the gritty, physical challenge of it, the trial and error, the scraped knees, and the raw focus it required. But skating and spending all my time outside separated me from the typical experience of young girlhood. I did not have a tight knit circle of girlfriends to whisper secrets with at sleepovers. Instead, my companions were often the neighborhood boys who shared my hobbies, or more frequently, my own solitude. When I was not outside chasing the physical rush of skateboarding, I was retreating into my own mind. I spent countless hours drawing, completely out of tune with the rest of the world. Art was my sanctuary. While the social landscape around me felt confusing and laden with unwritten rules I did not understand, a blank canvas made perfect sense. I could control the lines, the shadows, and the stories I wanted to tell. This deep introversion combined with my tomboy exterior made me an anomaly. I was often physically present but mentally miles away, totally detached from the pop culture trends, the gossip, and the teenage milestones that everyone else seemed obsessed with. To outsiders, this detachment looked like awkwardness. In reality, it was just a quiet peace. Because I refused to perform the traditional rituals of femininity, people began to project their own assumptions onto me. I was frequently told I "looked gay," or faced constant, probing questions about who and what I was. People wanted to categorize me to make themselves more comfortable. If a girl did not wear makeup, preferred baggy clothes, and spent her time skating instead of flirting, they assumed there had to be a hidden reason or an alternative identity attached to it. The truth was far simpler, yet harder for them to grasp: I was not trying to be anything I was not. I was not putting on a costume or trying to stand out on purpose. I was just navigating my youth in the only way that felt honest to me. Looking back, the things that made me "weird" or "awkward" then, the skating, the solitary drawing sessions, the indifference to social expectations, and the refusal to conform, were actually the building blocks of my strength. It takes a unique kind of resilience to stand firm in your own identity when the world is constantly telling you to change. I might have stood out for all the wrong reasons in the eyes of my peers, but I was learning how to be comfortable in my own skin. That awkward tomboy who preferred the company of a sketchbook to a crowded cafeteria was just a girl fiercely, quietly, and beautifully committed to being herself.

It became tied to one of the most painful periods of my life and served as an emotional outlet while I was grieving the death of my partner. Music has a unique ability to connect with emotions that are difficult to explain in words, and this song captured feelings of heartbreak, loneliness, and longing in a way that deeply resonated with me during that time. When my partner passed away, I was still very young and trying to navigate adulthood. I had just gotten accepted into college, which was supposed to be an exciting new chapter in my life. I had also recently gotten a new car, something that symbolized freedom, independence, and growth. However, instead of those experiences feeling joyful, they became intertwined with grief. I often found myself driving without a destination, overwhelmed by sadness and trying to process emotions that felt impossible to carry. Many of those drives led me past my partner’s house, the place where he died. Even though it was painful, it was one of the few ways I felt connected to him after his passing. During those drives, “drivers license” became the song I played over and over again. The lyrics about driving through familiar streets while carrying heartbreak felt painfully relatable to my own experiences. Although the song is written about romantic heartbreak and loss after a relationship, I interpreted it through the lens of grief. The feeling of missing someone so intensely that everyday places become emotional reminders mirrored what I was experiencing. Every street, every stoplight, and every drive past his house carried memories that I could not escape from. One reason the song meant so much to me was because it gave me permission to feel my emotions fully. Grief can often feel isolating, especially at a young age when many people around you may not fully understand what you are going through. I struggled to put my feelings into words, but music helped express emotions I could not explain myself. Listening to Olivia Rodrigo sing with such raw emotion made me feel less alone in my pain. It reminded me that heartbreak and loss are universal human experiences, even if everyone experiences them differently. The song also became connected to a specific time in my life where I was balancing grief while trying to continue moving forward. I still had responsibilities, school, and expectations for my future, but emotionally I felt frozen in the past. Driving became a space where I could temporarily let my emotions out without judgment. I could cry, reflect, and remember my partner privately while listening to music that matched how heavy my heart felt. In many ways, those drives became part of my healing process. Looking back now, “drivers license” represents more than sadness to me. It represents survival, emotional release, and the importance of music during difficult moments in life. Even though hearing the song still brings back painful memories, it also reminds me of how I was able to process grief little by little. Music can become attached to important moments in our lives, and for me, this song will always symbolize the love I had for my partner and the journey of learning how to live after loss.

Art has long been recognized as more than just a creative outlet; it is also a powerful tool for healing and emotional expression. Over the years, research has continued to demonstrate the strong connection between art and mental health, particularly through the way creative expression affects neurotransmitters in the brain. Engaging in artistic activities has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and help regulate emotions by increasing dopamine and serotonin levels. These neurotransmitters play a major role in emotional well-being, motivation, and feelings of happiness. Because of this connection, art has become increasingly incorporated into therapeutic and public health settings as a meaningful form of emotional healing and self-discovery. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to teach art groups within therapy sessions, and it has become one of my greatest passions. Watching individuals express emotions through painting, drawing, and other forms of creativity has shown me how transformative art can truly be. Many people struggle to communicate painful emotions verbally, especially when dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, or grief. Art offers an alternative way to process those feelings without the pressure of finding the “right” words. Instead, emotions can be transferred onto paper through color, movement, texture, and design. In many ways, art becomes a safe space where individuals can confront emotions they may not yet fully understand. One of the most meaningful aspects of art therapy is its ability to help people reconnect with themselves. In group settings, I have witnessed clients who were once withdrawn slowly begin to open up through creative expression. Even simple projects can encourage conversation, reflection, and emotional release. Art allows individuals to feel seen and understood without judgment. It creates an environment where healing can occur naturally and authentically. Seeing participants gain confidence, relax emotionally, and engage with others through creativity has reinforced my belief in the importance of incorporating art into mental health care. Art has also become an important part of my own daily healing process. I try to create a new painting every day, whether it is simple or extravagant. For me, painting is not about perfection; it is about expression. Creating art helps me process my emotions, reduce stress, and stay connected to myself mentally and emotionally. Some days, painting allows me to release overwhelming emotions, while other days it helps me reflect and find peace. The act of creating provides a sense of grounding and mindfulness that is difficult to achieve in other ways. Through art, I have learned how important it is to nurture emotional health through creativity and self-expression. In addition to my personal and professional experiences, I have also had the opportunity to observe healing through art within public health and hospital settings. While sitting in classes at Memorial Hospital, I witnessed clients actively engage in artistic activities as part of their healing journeys. It was inspiring to see individuals from different backgrounds come together and experience moments of joy, calmness, and connection through creativity. These experiences demonstrated that art can reach people in ways traditional treatment methods sometimes cannot. It creates opportunities for emotional exploration, community support, and resilience. Overall, art plays a vital role in healing because it allows individuals to express emotions, improve mental well-being, and reconnect with themselves and others. Whether practiced in therapy groups, hospitals, or personal daily routines, art has the ability to transform pain into expression and isolation into connection. Its impact on emotional health is both scientifically supported and personally observable, making it an invaluable tool within mental health and public health settings. I just want to say thank you for the opportunity. 

My goal is to accomplish my social work degree at a masters level so I can give back to my community. My goal is to manage my budget and keep food on the table so this is my opportunity to apply for scholarships and I look forward to becoming the best social worker November 2027. I grew up in a broken home with an abusive father. At times I never thought I would be free, but when I became an adult i realized there is such a great benefit of helping others in the community, who also come from broken homes and abusive families. It is very important to remember the value of a human being, to respect others with dignity, and give back to marginalized communities the best way I can, and that's by being a part of it. Being a part of the change, being a part of food drives, the housing teams, the resource connections and emotional support. I want to be financially stable as well, it's important that my children do not struggle like I did. My childhood was often a struggle because I often waited for my mom to get home because she works long hours, waiting for food to show up, and waiting for support. When I decide to have children, I promise to be good to them and provide them with unconditional love and support. I know it would mean a lot if I had that growing up, and I'm so very blessed to have been able to get my education with a lot of environmental factors surrounding me.  I believe because of my upbringing I bring a type of connection, resiliency, and awareness to the communities I'd like to serve. It has taught me how to be strong, it has taught me to use my voice when no one can't hear me, it has taught me how to walk with the Lord and trust his word and the path that he has chosen for me. I also would like to thank God for every opportunity I've had to grow and learn something new about myself. Six years ago, I lost the love of my life to suicide. This has been really hard on me, but has taught me the importance of therapy and recovery. Losing my partner has taught me also that life is too short and we must keep going. so my end goal is to continue to shed light on the importance of wellness in mental health and mental illness.
