Books have the power to change the way we see ourselves and others. Throughout my life, reading has allowed me to better understand different perspectives, emotions, and experiences that I may never encounter firsthand. Two books that have had a meaningful impact on me are Dancing at the Pity Party by Tyler Feder and Diary of an Oxygen Thief. Although they are very different stories, both taught me valuable lessons about empathy, resilience, and the importance of understanding the emotions that people often keep hidden.
Dancing at the Pity Party gave me a deeper understanding of grief and the many ways people cope with loss. Tyler Feder shares her experiences with honesty, humor, and vulnerability, reminding readers that there is no "right" way to grieve. The book taught me the importance of compassion and being present for others, even when I don't know exactly what to say. It also showed me that kindness can make a significant difference in someone's life, especially during difficult times.
Diary of an Oxygen Thief offered a different perspective by exploring emotional pain, regret, and the consequences of hurting others. While I did not agree with many of the narrator's choices, the book reminded me that everyone has a story that shapes who they become. It reinforced the idea that people often carry struggles that are not immediately visible. Rather than judging others too quickly, I learned the importance of empathy, self-reflection, and personal growth.
These lessons have shaped my goals as I prepare for a career in education. I recently graduated from Texas Southmost College and will continue my education at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi to earn my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. As a future teacher, I want to create a classroom where students feel safe, respected, and understood. Every child enters the classroom with unique experiences, and I want to be the kind of educator who recognizes those differences and provides encouragement and support.
The books I have read have strengthened my belief that education is about more than teaching academic subjects. It is also about helping students develop empathy, resilience, confidence, and kindness. My goal is to become a teacher who inspires students to care about others, appreciate different perspectives, and believe in themselves. Reading has helped shape not only my understanding of the world but also the educator I hope to become, and I know those lessons will continue to guide me throughout my career.

Throughout my educational journey, I have learned that serving others is one of the most meaningful ways to strengthen a community. I believe that small acts of kindness, education, and encouragement can have a lasting impact on people's lives. Whether through volunteering, working with children, or supporting educational events, I have always looked for opportunities to give back. These experiences have not only helped my community but have also reinforced my goal of becoming an elementary school teacher.
One of the most meaningful ways I have contributed to my community was by participating in Play Day at the Zoo. This event brought together educators, volunteers, and families to create engaging educational activities for children. I helped develop and lead hands-on learning experiences that encouraged creativity, curiosity, and teamwork. Watching children smile as they explored new ideas reminded me how powerful learning can be when it is interactive and enjoyable. I also enjoyed working alongside other volunteers who shared the common goal of creating a positive experience for every child. This opportunity strengthened my communication, leadership, and teamwork skills while allowing me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local families.
In addition to volunteering, I have dedicated myself to pursuing a career that will allow me to continue serving my community every day. I recently graduated from Texas Southmost College and will continue my education at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi to earn my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. My goal is to create a classroom where every child feels safe, respected, and encouraged to succeed. Growing up, my kindergarten teacher helped me overcome my shyness and inspired me to believe in myself. Because of her kindness and encouragement, I want to provide the same support to future students who may need someone to believe in them.
I believe that strong communities are built through compassion, service, and education. While volunteering at events like Play Day at the Zoo may seem like a small contribution, I have learned that even simple acts of service can make a lasting impact. A child who feels encouraged today may become a confident leader tomorrow. A family who feels welcomed at a community event may become more connected to those around them. These moments matter, and I am proud to have been part of creating them.
Receiving the Books for Good Scholarship would allow me to continue preparing for a career centered on serving others. My goal is not only to teach academic subjects but also to help children develop confidence, kindness, and a lifelong love of learning. I hope to continue giving back to my community through education, volunteer service, and mentorship, helping build stronger communities one student at a time.
Charlene K. Howard Chogo Scholarship
Women's empowerment has played an important role in my life because I have experienced firsthand how encouragement, education, and support can help a young woman discover her potential. Growing up, I was extremely shy and often lacked confidence in myself. I was hesitant to speak up in class, participate in activities, or share my ideas with others. However, the support of strong women in my life, especially my teachers, helped me recognize my strengths and believe in my abilities. Their encouragement taught me that empowerment begins when someone believes in you, and it inspired me to become someone who helps empower others.
One of the most significant ways I contribute to women's empowerment is through my commitment to education. I recently graduated from Texas Southmost College and will continue my studies at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi to pursue a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. As a future teacher, I want to empower young girls by helping them develop confidence, independence, and a belief in their own abilities. Many girls face pressures and expectations that can cause them to doubt themselves. I want my classroom to be a place where students feel safe expressing their ideas, asking questions, and pursuing their goals without fear of judgment. By encouraging girls to embrace learning and recognize their potential, I hope to help shape future leaders, educators, and professionals.
My involvement in volunteer and community activities has also allowed me to promote empowerment through service. One experience that was especially meaningful was participating in Play Day at the Zoo, where I helped create educational and engaging activities for children. Through this experience, I saw how important positive role models can be in a child's life. Young girls benefit from seeing women who are educated, compassionate, and actively involved in their communities. By volunteering and working with children, I strive to demonstrate the value of education, leadership, and service while encouraging others to pursue their own goals.
Women's empowerment is not always about large public achievements; sometimes it is about helping others recognize their worth and potential. I try to support and encourage my classmates, friends, and younger students whenever possible. Whether through sharing advice, offering encouragement, or simply listening, I believe small acts of support can make a meaningful difference. Empowerment grows when women lift each other up and create opportunities for one another to succeed.
In the future, I plan to continue making an impact through education and mentorship. My goal is to become the kind of teacher who inspires young girls to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they may face. I want my students to understand that their voices matter, their ideas are valuable, and their goals are achievable. Through education, compassion, and leadership, I hope to contribute to a future where more women feel empowered to reach their full potential and create positive change in their communities. By investing in the next generation of girls, I believe I can help build a stronger, more confident, and more equitable future for everyone.

My name is Julissa Carrizales, and I am passionate about education, community service, and helping children reach their full potential. I recently graduated from Texas Southmost College and will be continuing my education at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, where I plan to earn my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. My goal is to become an elementary school teacher who creates a positive, supportive, and engaging learning environment for students.
My passion for teaching began when I was in kindergarten. As a child, I was extremely shy and often struggled with confidence. My kindergarten teacher, Ms. Gallegos, recognized those challenges and took the time to encourage me, support me, and help me believe in myself. Her kindness and dedication changed my educational experience and inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a similar impact on the lives of children. Since then, I have wanted to become a teacher who helps students feel valued, capable, and excited to learn.
Throughout my educational journey, I have sought opportunities to work with and support children. One of the most meaningful experiences was participating in Play Day at the Zoo, where I helped create engaging educational activities for children and families. This experience reinforced my belief that learning should be interactive, enjoyable, and accessible to all students. It also showed me how powerful encouragement and positive experiences can be in helping children build confidence and curiosity.
Through my career as an educator, I plan to make a positive impact on my community by helping children develop not only academic skills but also confidence, resilience, and a love of learning. I believe that teachers play an important role in shaping the future because they influence the next generation of leaders, problem-solvers, and community members. By creating a classroom where students feel safe, respected, and supported, I hope to help children recognize their strengths and believe in their potential.
In addition to teaching, I hope to remain involved in community programs that provide educational opportunities and support for children and families. I believe education extends beyond the classroom, and I want to contribute to initiatives that encourage literacy, mentorship, and lifelong learning. Whether through volunteer work, educational outreach, or community events, I hope to use my skills and experiences to make learning more accessible and meaningful.
Ultimately, my goal is to make a lasting difference by inspiring students to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams. The encouragement I received from teachers helped shape who I am today, and I hope to provide that same support to future generations. Through education, compassion, and service, I believe I can contribute to a stronger community and a brighter future for the students I will have the privilege to teach.
Bright Lights Scholarship
My plans for the future center around education, service, and making a positive impact on the lives of children. I recently graduated from Texas Southmost College and will be transferring to Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi to pursue my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. My ultimate goal is to become an elementary school teacher who creates a supportive and engaging classroom where every student feels valued, encouraged, and capable of succeeding.
My passion for teaching began when I was in kindergarten. As a shy child, I often struggled with confidence and participation in the classroom. My teacher, Ms. Gallegos, recognized those challenges and helped me find my voice through her patience, kindness, and encouragement. She showed me how much influence a caring teacher can have on a student's life. Because of her impact, I decided that I wanted to become a teacher and help future students develop confidence in themselves just as she helped me.
As I continue my education, I hope to gain the knowledge, skills, and classroom experience necessary to become an effective educator. After earning my bachelor's degree and teaching certification, I plan to teach elementary students, preferably in first or second grade. These early years are critical in a child's development, and I want to help students build strong academic foundations while also developing confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning.
In addition to teaching, I hope to remain active in my community through volunteer work and educational outreach programs. Experiences such as participating in Play Day at the Zoo have shown me the importance of creating engaging learning opportunities outside of the classroom. In the future, I would like to continue supporting programs that provide educational enrichment, mentorship, and resources for children and families.
This scholarship would play an important role in helping me achieve these goals. Pursuing a bachelor's degree comes with many expenses, including tuition, textbooks, housing, transportation, and classroom materials. Financial assistance would help reduce these burdens and allow me to focus more fully on my education and professional development. Instead of worrying as much about the cost of college, I would be able to dedicate more time and energy to my coursework, field experiences, and preparation for my future career.
More importantly, this scholarship would be an investment in the future students I hope to teach. Every opportunity I receive to further my education helps prepare me to make a greater impact in the classroom. By supporting my educational journey, this scholarship would help me move closer to my dream of becoming a teacher who inspires, encourages, and empowers children to reach their full potential.
I am committed to working hard, serving my community, and using my education to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my goals and creating a positive impact on future generations through education.

My story is one of growth, perseverance, and discovering a passion for helping others through education. As a child, I was extremely shy and often struggled to speak up in class or interact with others. School felt intimidating, and I lacked confidence in myself. Everything began to change when I met my kindergarten teacher, Ms. Gallegos. She took the time to encourage me, support me, and make me feel valued in her classroom. Through her patience and kindness, I gradually gained confidence and learned to believe in my abilities.
The impact Ms. Gallegos had on my life inspired me to pursue a career in education. Watching her create a welcoming environment where every student felt supported showed me the difference a caring teacher can make. From that point forward, I knew I wanted to become an elementary school teacher and provide the same encouragement to future students that she provided to me.
Since then, I have worked hard to achieve my educational goals. I recently graduated from Texas Southmost College and will be transferring to Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi to pursue my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Along the way, I have participated in volunteer opportunities that strengthened my passion for working with children. One of the most meaningful experiences was helping with Play Day at the Zoo, where I assisted with educational activities designed to engage children through learning and play. Experiences like these have reinforced my commitment to becoming a teacher who inspires confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning.
My career goal is to teach elementary school students, particularly in the early grades where children begin developing the skills and confidence that will shape their educational journey. I want to create a classroom where students feel safe, respected, and encouraged to reach their full potential. I believe every child deserves a teacher who believes in them and helps them recognize their strengths.
Receiving this scholarship would have a significant impact on my career goals. Continuing my education comes with financial challenges, including tuition, textbooks, housing, transportation, and other expenses. This scholarship would help reduce those burdens and allow me to focus more fully on my studies, field experiences, and professional development. It would also provide me with greater opportunities to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to become an effective educator.
More importantly, this scholarship would be an investment in my future students. By helping me complete my education, it would support my ability to make a positive difference in the lives of children for years to come. I am committed to working hard, serving my community, and using my education to inspire future generations. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming the teacher who helps students believe in themselves and their potential.
Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship
The impact I want to make is helping children believe in themselves and recognize their potential. I believe education has the power to change lives, and I want to use my career as an elementary school teacher to create positive, lasting change in my community. My goal is not only to teach academic subjects, but also to help students build confidence, develop resilience, and discover a love for learning that will stay with them throughout their lives.
The person who has inspired me most is my kindergarten teacher, Ms. Gallegos. When I first started school, I was extremely shy and lacked confidence. Instead of overlooking me, she took the time to encourage me, support me, and make me feel valued in her classroom. Through her patience and kindness, I learned to believe in myself and participate more confidently in school. She showed me how much influence a caring teacher can have on a child’s life, and her example inspired me to pursue a career in education.
As I continue my education and work toward earning my bachelor's degree, I hope to use what I learn to serve children and families in my community. I want to create classrooms where every student feels safe, welcomed, and supported regardless of their background or circumstances. I know that many children face challenges outside of school, and I want to be a teacher who provides encouragement, understanding, and opportunities for success.
In addition to teaching, I hope to remain involved in community programs that support children through mentorship, educational activities, and learning opportunities. My experiences volunteering at events such as Play Day at the Zoo have shown me how important it is to create engaging environments where children can learn, explore, and build confidence. These experiences reinforced my belief that education extends beyond the classroom and that communities play an important role in helping children succeed.
The change I am determined to create is a future where children feel empowered to pursue their dreams and overcome obstacles. I want my students to know that their voices matter, their goals are achievable, and their potential is limitless. By investing in education and supporting young learners, I believe we can strengthen our communities and create opportunities for future generations.
Ultimately, I hope to give back by becoming the kind of teacher who changes lives the way Ms. Gallegos changed mine. Through education, compassion, and service, I want to help build a better future—one student at a time.
Marie Humphries Memorial Scholarship
I am interested in pursuing a career in teaching because I want to make a positive difference in the lives of children and help create learning environments where students feel safe, supported, and encouraged to believe in themselves. I have always admired the impact teachers can have on their students, not only academically but also emotionally and personally. Teachers help shape confidence, inspire growth, and influence the future of their students in meaningful ways. I want to become the kind of teacher who helps children feel valued, capable, and excited to learn.
My passion for teaching began when I was in kindergarten because of a teacher who truly changed my life, Ms. Gallegos. When I first entered school, I was extremely shy and struggled to speak up or interact with others. I often felt nervous in social situations and lacked confidence in myself. Instead of overlooking me, Ms. Gallegos noticed how quiet and uncomfortable I was and made it her mission to help me feel safe and included in her classroom.
She never pressured me or made me feel embarrassed for being shy. Instead, she showed me patience, kindness, and understanding every single day. She encouraged me to participate in activities, helped me build confidence little by little, and created a classroom environment where I felt accepted and valued. Over time, I slowly became more comfortable speaking up, making friends, and believing in my abilities as a student.
What impacted me the most was the way Ms. Gallegos treated every child with compassion and encouragement. She made learning feel exciting, creative, and welcoming. For the first time, I genuinely looked forward to going to school each day. Her classroom became a place where I felt supported rather than afraid.
Because of her influence, I realized at a very young age that I wanted to become an elementary school teacher myself. I wanted to be able to help children the same way she helped me. I understand firsthand how powerful a caring teacher can be in a child’s life, especially for students who may feel overlooked, insecure, or uncertain about themselves. One teacher’s kindness completely changed the way I viewed school and my own potential.
Now, as I continue my education at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I carry the lessons Ms. Gallegos taught me every day. My goal is to create a classroom where every child feels seen, heard, and encouraged regardless of their background or struggles. I want my future students to know they are capable of achieving their goals and that their voice matters.
Teaching is more than a career to me—it is an opportunity to inspire, support, and positively impact future generations. I hope to become the kind of teacher who not only teaches academic lessons, but also helps students build confidence, resilience, and belief in themselves, just as Ms. Gallegos did for me.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My primary goal is to earn my bachelor’s degree in education and become an elementary school teacher who creates a positive and supportive learning environment for children. I want to help students feel confident, valued, and excited about learning, especially children who may struggle with shyness, insecurity, or challenges outside of school. Long-term, I also hope to become involved in community outreach and educational programs that support children and families through tutoring, mentorship, and creative learning opportunities.
To reach these goals, I plan to attend Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi and complete my degree in education. My academic plan includes maintaining strong grades, participating in field experiences and internships, and gaining hands-on experience working with children through volunteering and educational events. I also plan to build relationships with professors, mentors, and other future educators who can guide me professionally and help me grow as a teacher.
Financially, completing my degree requires careful planning. My expected expenses include tuition, textbooks, housing, transportation, school supplies, and living costs. Tuition and fees are one of the largest expenses, along with housing and meal costs while attending college. Textbooks and classroom materials can also become expensive each semester. To manage these costs, I plan to combine financial aid, scholarships, personal savings, and part-time employment when possible. Scholarships are especially important because they help reduce financial stress and allow me to focus more on my education and professional development.
In addition to financial resources, I understand the importance of time management and emotional support in achieving my goals. College can be academically and personally challenging, so I plan to stay organized by creating schedules, setting academic goals each semester, and balancing school responsibilities with self-care and family obligations. I also plan to use campus resources such as tutoring services, academic advising, student organizations, and career development programs to help me stay on track.
Another important part of my plan is gaining practical experience working with children. I believe strong teachers are developed not only through coursework but also through real-world interaction and service. I plan to continue volunteering at community and educational events, including programs focused on learning through play and student engagement. These experiences will help me strengthen my communication, leadership, and classroom management skills while positively impacting children in my community.
I know there may be obstacles along the way, including financial difficulties, stress, or unexpected life challenges. However, I am committed to remaining flexible and determined. If one path becomes difficult, I will continue searching for alternative solutions such as additional scholarships, campus employment opportunities, or community support programs. My ultimate goal is not only to graduate but also to use my education to make a meaningful difference in the lives of future students.
By carefully planning my education, finances, resources, and personal growth, I believe I can successfully achieve my goals and build a future centered on service, education, and positive community impact.
Lost Dreams Awaken Scholarship
To me, recovery means growth, resilience, and finding the strength to move forward after facing challenges. Recovery is not always about returning to the person you once were; sometimes it means becoming stronger, wiser, and more understanding because of what you have experienced. It is a process of healing emotionally, mentally, and physically while continuing to believe in yourself even during difficult moments.
I believe recovery can happen in many different ways. For some people, recovery may mean overcoming personal struggles, grief, stress, failure, or self-doubt. For others, it may involve rebuilding confidence, finding hope again, or learning how to ask for help. No matter the situation, recovery requires patience, courage, and support from others.
In my own life, recovery has meant learning to overcome fear and insecurity. As someone who was once extremely shy and lacked confidence, I had to learn how to believe in myself and step outside of my comfort zone. Through the encouragement of supportive teachers, family members, and mentors, I gained confidence in my abilities and discovered my passion for education and helping others.
Recovery reminds me that challenges do not define a person. What truly matters is the willingness to keep going, continue growing, and use difficult experiences as motivation to create a better future for yourself and others.
STLF Memorial Pay It Forward Scholarship
One meaningful volunteering experience I participated in was Play Day at the Zoo, an educational community event focused on creating fun and interactive learning experiences for children and families. The event brought together volunteers, educators, and students to encourage learning through play, creativity, and hands-on activities. Being part of this event allowed me to directly connect with children while giving back to my community in a meaningful way.
During Play Day at the Zoo, I helped organize and assist with activities for children attending the event. I worked with other volunteers to prepare materials, guide children through games and learning stations, and create a welcoming environment where every child felt included and encouraged to participate. Many of the activities focused on creativity, teamwork, and learning through play, which helped children become excited about exploring and interacting with others.
One of the most memorable parts of the experience was helping shy or nervous children feel comfortable participating. Some children were hesitant to join activities or interact with others, so I made an effort to talk with them, encourage them, and help them feel included. Watching children slowly gain confidence, smile, and enjoy themselves reminded me how important patience and kindness can be. Even small acts of encouragement made a difference in helping them feel safe and valued.
Volunteering at Play Day at the Zoo strengthened my passion for working with children and confirmed my desire to become an elementary school teacher. It showed me how important positive learning environments are in helping children build confidence, social skills, and excitement about learning. I realized that education is not limited to classrooms; meaningful learning can happen anywhere when children are supported and encouraged.
This experience also taught me the importance of leadership through service. I believe leadership is not about being in charge or receiving recognition—it is about helping others, supporting your community, and setting a positive example. Through volunteering, I learned that leaders serve by listening, encouraging others, and stepping up when help is needed. Leadership through service creates stronger communities because it focuses on compassion, teamwork, and making a positive impact on others’ lives.
As I continue my education at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, I hope to continue volunteering and working with programs that support children and families. My goal is to use my future career in education to create safe, encouraging environments where every child feels seen, supported, and capable of succeeding.
Marshall and Dorothy Smith Music Scholarship
Music has always been an important part of my life, even though my background in music has been more personal and meaningful than professional. Growing up, music became a source of comfort, motivation, and self-expression during both good and difficult moments in my life. Whether it was listening to music while studying, participating in school activities, or simply using music as a way to relax and reflect, it has always helped me feel connected and inspired.
Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I admired how music could bring people together and create a sense of community. I especially noticed the impact music had in educational settings. Songs, rhythm, and creative activities often made learning more engaging and memorable for students. As someone who hopes to become an elementary school teacher, I have developed an appreciation for how music can encourage creativity, confidence, and emotional expression in children.
Although I was not formally trained as a musician, I have always valued music as an important educational and emotional tool. I enjoyed participating in classroom activities involving music and watching how it helped students feel included and excited to learn. Music has the ability to reach people in ways that words sometimes cannot, and I believe it can create positive and welcoming learning environments for children of all backgrounds.
After completing my degree at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, I hope to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher where I can combine creativity, compassion, and education to make a difference in students’ lives. My goal is to create a classroom environment where children feel safe, supported, and inspired to learn. I want to encourage students not only academically, but also emotionally and creatively, using tools such as music, art, and interactive learning experiences to help them grow in confidence.
In the future, I would also like to become involved in community programs and educational activities that provide opportunities for children who may not have access to creative resources. I believe music and the arts are valuable because they allow children to express themselves, build confidence, and develop important social and emotional skills.
Ultimately, my experiences with music have taught me the importance of creativity, connection, and encouragement. While my path may not lead me to a career in music itself, I hope to carry the positive influence of music into my future classroom and use it as a way to inspire and support the next generation of students.
“I Matter” Scholarship
One time I helped someone in need was during a community and educational event involving young children. I noticed that one little girl was sitting by herself while the other children participated in activities together. She looked nervous, overwhelmed, and hesitant to join the group. Many people walked past assuming she was simply quiet, but I recognized the same fear and shyness that I experienced when I was younger.
Instead of leaving her alone, I sat beside her and began talking to her calmly. I asked her about her favorite colors, toys, and games to help her feel more comfortable. At first, she barely responded, but I continued encouraging her patiently without pressuring her. After a while, she slowly began opening up and smiling. I invited her to join one of the activities with me, and eventually she started participating with the other children.
Throughout the event, I stayed near her whenever she seemed unsure or anxious. By the end of the day, she was laughing, interacting with other students, and proudly showing off the work she had created during the activities. Before leaving, she hugged me and thanked me for helping her feel included. Her parent also thanked me, explaining that she often struggled with social anxiety and had been afraid to attend the event in the first place.
Although it may seem like a small act, that experience reminded me how meaningful kindness and patience can be. Sometimes helping someone in need does not require money or grand gestures. Sometimes it simply means noticing when someone feels invisible and taking the time to make them feel valued and supported.
This experience also reinforced my desire to become an elementary school teacher. I understand how important it is for children to feel safe, encouraged, and accepted, especially during moments when they doubt themselves. As someone who was once shy and uncertain, I know firsthand how much one caring person can impact a child’s confidence.
Now, as I continue my education at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, I hope to continue helping others through education and community involvement. My goal is to create positive environments where children feel comfortable being themselves and confident in their abilities. Helping that little girl reminded me that even small acts of compassion can leave lasting impressions and change someone’s day—or even their life—for the better.
Michael Rudometkin Memorial Scholarship
Selflessness means helping others with kindness, compassion, and without expecting anything in return. I believe I embody selflessness through the way I support the people around me, especially children, classmates, friends, and family members who may need encouragement or assistance during difficult times. I have learned that even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact on someone’s life, and I try to carry that mindset with me every day.
One of the most meaningful experiences that showed me the importance of selflessness was volunteering and participating in activities involving children through educational and community events. I have always enjoyed helping children feel included, supported, and confident. During group activities and learning experiences, I noticed that some children were shy or hesitant to participate, much like I was when I was younger. Instead of allowing them to sit alone or feel left out, I would take time to talk with them, encourage them, and help them become involved in the activity. Seeing their confidence grow and watching them begin to smile and participate reminded me how powerful kindness and patience can be.
I also try to support my classmates whenever possible. Whether it is helping someone understand an assignment, sharing notes, or simply listening when someone feels overwhelmed, I believe being present for others is an important form of selflessness. In stressful academic environments, many students struggle silently, and sometimes all someone needs is encouragement or reassurance that they are capable of succeeding.
Within my family, selflessness has also meant stepping up when others need support. I have helped care for younger family members, assisted with responsibilities at home, and supported loved ones emotionally during difficult situations. These experiences taught me responsibility, empathy, and the importance of putting others’ needs before my own at times.
My desire to become an elementary school teacher is also rooted in selflessness. I want to dedicate my career to helping children learn, grow, and believe in themselves. I know how much of a difference one caring teacher can make in a child’s life because I experienced that encouragement myself when I was younger. My goal is to create a classroom where every child feels safe, valued, and supported regardless of their background or struggles.
As I continue my education at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, I hope to continue serving my community and using my future career to positively impact others. To me, selflessness is not about recognition; it is about consistently choosing to help others, even in small ways, because you genuinely care about their well-being and success.
Champions Of A New Path Scholarship
I believe I deserve this scholarship because I am deeply committed to my education, my future career, and the impact I hope to make in the lives of others. I am not only pursuing a degree for personal success, but also to create positive change within my community through education and service. Every challenge I have faced has strengthened my determination to succeed and motivated me to continue working toward my goals.
As an incoming transfer student at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I have remained focused on my academic journey despite obstacles and uncertainty. I understand the value of education because I know it can open doors to opportunities that can change someone’s life. My experiences have taught me resilience, responsibility, and perseverance, qualities that continue to push me forward even during difficult moments.
What gives me an advantage is not that I believe I am “better” than other applicants, but that I have a genuine passion for helping others and a clear purpose behind my education. My goal is to become an elementary school teacher who creates a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment for students. I want to be the kind of teacher who helps children feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving their dreams, especially students who may struggle with confidence or difficult circumstances.
I also bring compassion, empathy, and dedication into everything I do. I understand how much encouragement from one person can impact a child’s future because I experienced it myself through teachers who believed in me. Those experiences inspired me to pursue a career where I can give back to others and make a meaningful difference in my community.
Receiving this scholarship would not only help ease the financial burden of continuing my education, but it would also allow me to focus more fully on achieving my academic and career goals. I am determined to make the most of every opportunity given to me, and I plan to use my education to positively impact future generations. This scholarship would be an investment in someone who is committed to working hard, serving others, and creating lasting change through education.
Future Nonprofit Leaders Award
I want to pursue a career connected to the nonprofit sector because I believe education and community support have the power to change lives. Throughout my life, I have seen how important it is for children and families to have people who genuinely care about their well-being and future. I want my career to be centered on helping others, creating opportunities, and making a lasting difference in my community.
My passion for helping others began at a young age through my experiences in school. As a shy child, I struggled with confidence and social interaction until teachers took the time to encourage and support me. Their kindness showed me how much of an impact one caring person can have on someone’s life. Because of these experiences, I developed a passion for education and for creating safe, supportive environments where children feel valued and capable of succeeding.
I plan to pursue a career in education while also working closely with nonprofit organizations that support children and families. Many students face challenges outside of the classroom, including poverty, food insecurity, lack of school supplies, unstable home environments, and limited access to educational opportunities. These issues often affect students’ confidence, academic performance, and mental well-being. I want to be part of organizations that address these barriers and provide resources that help children thrive both academically and personally.
One of the reasons I admire the nonprofit sector is because its mission is centered on service rather than profit. Nonprofit organizations have the ability to focus directly on the needs of communities and create programs that support people who are often overlooked. I hope to contribute to programs that provide tutoring, mentorship, after-school activities, literacy support, and emotional encouragement for children. I especially want to help students who may feel unheard or discouraged, because I understand how powerful encouragement can be in shaping a child’s future.
As I continue my education at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I hope to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to become both an effective educator and an active community advocate. My long-term goal is to combine teaching with community outreach efforts that support students and families beyond the classroom. I want to help create environments where children feel safe, inspired, and motivated to achieve their goals regardless of their background or circumstances.
Ultimately, I want my work to create a positive impact by giving children the support, confidence, and opportunities they deserve. I believe that investing in education and community programs can create long-term change, not only for individuals but for entire communities. By pursuing a career connected to the nonprofit sector, I hope to dedicate my life to helping others, strengthening my community, and inspiring future generations to believe in themselves and their potential.
Sweet Dreams Scholarship
Growing up, the story that changed mine was my kindergarten teacher Ms. Gallegos’s story. She taught me that one caring person can completely change the way a child sees themselves. When I first entered her classroom, I was extremely shy and struggled to speak up or connect with others. Instead of overlooking me, she made me feel important, capable, and safe. Her patience and encouragement helped me slowly gain confidence in myself and in my abilities as a student. Because of her, I discovered my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. She showed me that education is not only about academics—it is also about making students feel valued and supported.
One problem in my community that many people walk past is the lack of educational and emotional support available to children from low-income families. Many students struggle silently with challenges at home, limited access to school supplies, or feelings of insecurity and stress. Often, these struggles are dismissed because people assume children will “figure it out” on their own. What I notice is how deeply encouragement, attention, and access to resources can impact a child’s confidence and success in school.
If I had the resources to act, I would create free after-school programs that provide tutoring, creative activities, mentorship, and a safe environment for children. I would also make sure students have access to school supplies, books, and emotional support. I want every child to feel seen and encouraged the way Ms. Gallegos made me feel. Her story changed mine, and I hope one day I can help change someone else’s story too.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My experience with mental health has shaped the way I understand myself, others, and the world around me. It has influenced my goals, strengthened my relationships, and taught me the importance of compassion, patience, and self-awareness. While my journey has not always been easy, it has helped me grow into a more reflective and empathetic person.
One of the biggest ways mental health has influenced me is in shaping my goals for the future. I have learned that success is not only about academic achievement or reaching milestones quickly, but also about maintaining balance and well-being along the way. Because of this, I am pursuing higher education with the intention of becoming an educator who understands the importance of supporting students both academically and emotionally. I want to create a classroom environment where students feel safe, valued, and understood, especially those who may be quietly struggling.
My experiences have also changed the way I build and maintain relationships. I have learned to be more patient with others and with myself. I understand that everyone carries invisible challenges, and what someone shows on the outside is not always a reflection of what they are experiencing internally. Because of this, I try to approach others with kindness instead of judgment. I listen more carefully, communicate more thoughtfully, and make an effort to be supportive even in small ways. These changes have helped me form deeper and more meaningful connections with the people around me.
Mental health has also shaped how I view the world. I have become more aware of how important it is to create environments that support emotional well-being. In school settings especially, I have noticed how easily stress, pressure, or lack of support can affect a student’s confidence and performance. This awareness has motivated me to be part of a positive change in education. I want to help build spaces where students feel encouraged to speak up, ask questions, and take care of their mental and emotional health without fear of being judged.
At the same time, my experience has taught me resilience. I have learned that challenges do not define a person, but rather how they respond to them does. There have been moments where I have had to slow down, reflect, and refocus in order to move forward. Those moments have strengthened my ability to persevere and have helped me better understand the importance of self-care and balance.
Overall, my experience with mental health has shaped me into someone who values empathy, understanding, and growth. It has influenced my goals by guiding me toward a career in education, strengthened my relationships through compassion and awareness, and expanded my understanding of the importance of emotional well-being in everyday life.
As I continue my academic journey, I carry these lessons with me. I hope to not only grow personally, but also help create environments where others feel supported, understood, and capable of succeeding both inside and outside the classroom
Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
Music has always been a way for me to understand emotions I sometimes struggle to put into words. One artist whose music resonates deeply with me is Olivia Rodrigo. Her lyrics capture the complexity of growing up—dealing with change, self-discovery, and learning how to navigate relationships and identity. What makes her music especially meaningful to me is how honest and unfiltered it is. It reflects emotions that are often messy but real, which mirrors many parts of my own personal journey.
One lyric that stands out to me is, “I got my driver’s license last week” (“drivers license”). While the line seems simple, it represents a turning point—gaining independence while also realizing that growing up comes with emotional challenges. In my own life, I have experienced similar moments of transition where I expected excitement but instead felt uncertainty. As I’ve progressed through school and started thinking more seriously about my future in education, I’ve realized that independence is not just about milestones—it is also about learning how to handle responsibility, pressure, and self-doubt.
Another lyric that resonates with me is, “I just can’t imagine how you could be so okay” (“traitor”). This reflects the feeling of questioning situations where others seem unaffected while you are still processing emotions. I relate to this in moments where I have felt overlooked or unsure of my place in group settings, especially in academic environments. As someone who is naturally quieter in new groups, I often observe before speaking. Over time, I have learned that just because I process things internally does not mean my perspective is any less valid. This realization has helped me become more confident in my voice.
A final lyric that connects to my experience is, “I’m happier for you, just not happier” (“happier”). This line captures the complexity of growth and letting go. I have experienced moments where I have had to accept change in friendships, routines, or expectations of myself. While change is not always easy, it has pushed me to grow into a more independent and self-aware person. It has also shaped how I want to support others in the future—as an educator, I want students to feel understood even during times of transition or struggle.
Overall, Olivia Rodrigo’s music resonates with me because it reflects emotional honesty, growth, and self-reflection. Her lyrics remind me that it is okay to feel deeply, to question things, and to grow at my own pace. My personal journey has been shaped by learning how to navigate change, find confidence in quieter moments, and understand myself better over time.
As I continue pursuing my education, I carry these lessons with me. Just like the themes in her music, I am learning that growth is not always linear, but every experience—good or difficult—contributes to who I am becoming.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
If I were to create a brand-new Love Island challenge, it would be called “Truths & Tides.” This challenge is designed to test communication, trust, and how well the Islanders truly know each other beyond surface-level attraction.
The setup takes place on a large beach course divided into three themed zones: “The Shore of Secrets,” “The Wave of Words,” and “The Tide of Trust.” Each couple participates together, and their goal is to complete all three zones with the highest compatibility score.
In The Shore of Secrets, Islanders answer personal questions about their partner—but they do it separately and in private booths. Questions range from lighthearted (“What is your partner’s guilty pleasure snack?”) to more revealing (“What is your partner most insecure about in a relationship?”). After answering, their responses are compared. Each matching answer earns points, but mismatches are revealed to the entire group, sparking honest conversations.
Next is The Wave of Words, where one partner is blindfolded and must navigate a small obstacle course guided only by their partner’s voice. The catch is that distracting sound effects—like crashing waves, crowd noise, and music—are played loudly. This tests communication, patience, and trust under pressure. If the blindfolded partner completes the course without touching any obstacles, the couple earns bonus points.
The final stage is The Tide of Trust, which is the most emotional part of the challenge. Each Islander stands on a marked platform as rising “tide water” (simulated with a slowly filling pool or rising foam set effect) begins to close in. They are given statements about their relationship, such as “I feel fully understood by my partner” or “I am afraid to be vulnerable in this relationship.” They must decide whether to step forward (agree) or stay still (disagree). Their partner must guess their choice before time runs out. This stage is meant to highlight emotional honesty and how well couples truly understand each other.
At the end of all three stages, scores are revealed, but the real twist is that the winning couple does not receive a romantic reward—instead, they earn the power to swap one couple’s seating order for the upcoming recoupling, forcing them to think strategically about relationships in the villa.
“Truths & Tides” is not just about romance or competition—it is about communication, vulnerability, and trust, which are the real foundations of any strong connection on Love Island.
Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
Being a fan of Sabrina Carpenter for me is not just about enjoying her music—it is about connecting with the confidence, honesty, and growth she shows through her career. What I admire most about her is how she has evolved over time while staying true to herself. She began as a young actress and transitioned into a music career where she expresses her thoughts and emotions in a way that feels real and relatable.
One of the reasons her career impacts me is because of the way she approaches personal growth. Her music often reflects experiences with self-discovery, relationships, and learning from mistakes. Instead of presenting a perfect image, she shows that growth is messy and ongoing. That message has encouraged me to be more patient with myself in my own life. As a student and future educator, I sometimes put pressure on myself to have everything figured out, but her journey reminds me that success is built over time.
I also admire her confidence. The way she performs and presents herself on stage shows self-assurance, creativity, and individuality. Watching her embrace her personality has encouraged me to be more comfortable with who I am, even in situations where I might normally feel unsure or reserved. That confidence is something I try to apply in my own academic and personal life, especially when speaking up in group settings or stepping into leadership roles.
Another part of her career that inspires me is her work ethic. It is clear that her success did not happen overnight. She has continued to grow, refine her craft, and take on new challenges in the entertainment industry. That level of dedication motivates me to stay committed to my own goals in education. It reminds me that persistence matters, even when progress feels slow.
Overall, being a fan of Sabrina Carpenter has influenced me in a positive way by encouraging self-expression, confidence, and personal growth. Her career shows that it is okay to evolve, to make mistakes, and to continue improving. Those are lessons I carry with me as I work toward becoming the best version of myself academically and professionally.
Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Math has always stood out to me because it is one of the few subjects that is consistent, logical, and dependable. In a world where many things can feel uncertain or complicated, math provides structure and clear steps to finding answers. I love that there is usually a process I can follow, and when I apply it correctly, I can reach a solution that makes sense. That sense of order and problem-solving is something I genuinely enjoy.
Another reason I love math is that it challenges me to think critically. It is not just about memorizing formulas, but about understanding why those formulas work and how to apply them in different situations. I enjoy the process of breaking down a problem, even when it seems difficult at first, and working through it step by step until it becomes clearer. There is a sense of accomplishment that comes from solving something I initially did not understand.
Math also connects to real life in ways people do not always notice. From budgeting money to measuring space, planning time, or even understanding data, math is everywhere. I appreciate that learning math helps me build practical skills that I can use in everyday life and in my future career. As someone who is pursuing education, I also see how important it is for helping students develop confidence in problem-solving and logical thinking.
Although math can be challenging at times, those challenges are part of what makes it rewarding. When I struggle with a problem and eventually figure it out, it builds my patience and resilience. It reminds me that learning takes effort, and that mistakes are part of the process. Over time, I have learned to appreciate the struggle because it leads to growth.
Overall, I love math because it pushes me to think, helps me build confidence in my abilities, and teaches me persistence. It is a subject that rewards effort and encourages growth, and those are lessons I carry with me beyond the classroom.
Tawkify Meaningful Connections Scholarship
One of the most meaningful “relationships” in my life has been the connections I have formed with students and teachers during my classroom observation and fieldwork experiences. Although these relationships may not always be long-term or formal, they have had a lasting impact on how I understand people and how I approach building trust, communication, and support in educational settings.
Through my time in classrooms, I have had the opportunity to observe and assist students with a wide range of learning needs, personalities, and levels of confidence. One experience that stands out to me was working closely in a classroom with a student who was very quiet and hesitant to participate in group activities. At first glance, it would have been easy to assume the student was simply uninterested or disengaged. However, as I observed more closely, I realized that the student was not unmotivated—they were unsure of themselves and needed time to feel comfortable in the environment.
Instead of trying to immediately push participation, I focused on building trust through small, consistent interactions. I offered encouragement when appropriate, paid attention to their progress, and made sure they felt acknowledged even in quiet moments. I also learned to be patient and allow space for them to engage at their own pace rather than expecting immediate responses. Over time, I began to notice meaningful changes. The student started participating more in group discussions, became more willing to attempt tasks, and showed more confidence in their abilities. Seeing that growth reinforced for me how important patience and understanding are when building relationships in education.
This experience, along with others like it, has shaped the way I connect with people in general. I have learned that relationships are not built through quick assumptions or immediate outcomes, but through consistency, empathy, and time. I now approach new interactions with more awareness and curiosity. Instead of judging behavior at face value, I try to consider what a student might be feeling or experiencing that influences how they respond in a classroom setting.
These experiences have also influenced how I view communication and leadership. I have learned that leadership is not about being the most outspoken person in the room, but about being attentive to the needs of others. Sometimes leadership looks like quietly supporting someone who is struggling, encouraging a student who lacks confidence, or simply being present and reliable. I have come to understand that small actions can have a meaningful impact on how someone views themselves and their ability to succeed.
In addition, observing teachers and working in educational environments has shown me the importance of relationships between educators as well. I have seen how collaboration, respect, and shared support among teachers create a more positive learning environment for students. These observations have helped me understand the importance of being not only a supportive educator for students, but also a cooperative and respectful colleague.
Ultimately, these experiences have shaped my understanding of relationships as the foundation of learning and growth. I have learned that students are more likely to succeed when they feel seen, supported, and understood. As I continue pursuing my education and working toward becoming a teacher, I hope to continue building relationships that help students develop confidence in themselves and their abilities.
The most meaningful impact I can make is not only teaching academic content, but also helping students believe that they are capable, valued, and supported in their learning journey.
Patricia Lindsey Jackson Foundation - Eva Mae Jackson Scholarship of Education
Faith plays an important role in my life by giving me direction, strength, and a sense of purpose. It helps me stay grounded during challenges and reminds me that my journey is bigger than just myself. My faith encourages me to trust the process, work hard, and believe that I am being guided toward something meaningful. When I face uncertainty in school or in life, my faith helps me stay focused and resilient instead of discouraged.
Academically, my faith has taught me the importance of perseverance and discipline. There have been moments when balancing schoolwork, field experiences, and personal responsibilities felt overwhelming. During those times, my faith reminded me to keep going and to trust that my efforts would pay off. It has helped me develop patience with myself and confidence in my ability to grow. I have learned that success does not happen overnight, but through consistency, dedication, and belief in a greater purpose.
My faith also influences how I view others, especially in my future career as an educator. It has shaped my belief that every student has value and deserves compassion, respect, and opportunity. I want to create a classroom environment where students feel supported not only academically, but emotionally as well. I believe that when students feel cared for, they are more likely to succeed and reach their full potential. My faith encourages me to lead with kindness, empathy, and understanding in all of my interactions.
Beyond faith, my desire to pursue higher education has also been strongly influenced by my experiences working with children and my passion for teaching. As a dance instructor and future educator, I have seen how powerful learning can be when students are engaged and supported. I have worked with students who learn in different ways, and these experiences have shown me the importance of patience, creativity, and adaptability in education. I want to continue my education so I can better understand how to meet the needs of all learners, especially those who may struggle in traditional classroom settings.
Another major influence in my decision to pursue higher education has been the people around me who have believed in my potential. Teachers, mentors, and family members have encouraged me to continue my education and pursue my goals even when challenges arise. Their support has helped me recognize my own abilities and has pushed me to keep striving for more. Seeing the impact that educators and mentors have had on my own life has inspired me to become that same source of encouragement for others.
Ultimately, I see higher education as a way to fulfill both my personal and professional purpose. It will equip me with the knowledge and skills I need to become an effective, compassionate, and inclusive educator. My faith will continue to guide me throughout this journey, reminding me to stay humble, grateful, and committed to serving others. I want my future to reflect both my beliefs and my passion for education by making a positive difference in the lives of students.
Faith has given me strength, education gives me opportunity, and both together are shaping me into the person and educator I am becoming.
Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
What makes me a leader is not a title or a position, but the way I choose to show up for others—through patience, empathy, and action. I have learned that leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room, but about noticing who is being left out, encouraging others to succeed, and taking responsibility for creating positive change in any environment I am part of.
One of the most important ways I demonstrate leadership is through my ability to adapt and support others, especially in educational and creative settings. As a dance instructor and future educator, I often work with individuals who have different learning styles, abilities, and levels of confidence. In these moments, I take initiative to adjust my approach so that everyone can participate and feel successful. For example, I have broken down choreography into smaller steps, offered one-on-one guidance, and encouraged students who were hesitant to perform. These small actions may seem simple, but they often lead to significant growth in a student’s confidence and willingness to try.
Leadership, to me, also means being observant and responsive. I may not always be the most vocal person in a group, but I pay close attention to what others need. I notice when someone is struggling, when a student becomes discouraged, or when a group dynamic needs support. Instead of ignoring those moments, I step in when appropriate to offer help or encouragement. I have learned that strong leaders do not wait for problems to grow—they address them early with care and understanding.
Another way I show leadership is by creating inclusive environments. I believe every person deserves to feel seen and valued, especially in learning spaces. Whether I am working with students in a classroom setting or in dance instruction, I make it a priority to ensure that no one feels left out. I try to build an environment where differences are respected and where each person is encouraged to use their unique strengths. This mindset has helped me develop stronger communication skills and deeper relationships with those I work with.
My experiences have also taught me that leadership requires humility. I am always willing to learn from others, accept feedback, and improve myself. I understand that I do not have all the answers, but I am committed to growing and becoming better so I can serve others more effectively. This willingness to learn is what I believe strengthens my ability to lead.
Ultimately, what makes me a leader is my commitment to helping others succeed. I lead by supporting, encouraging, and creating space for people to feel confident in who they are. Whether in a classroom, a dance studio, or any group setting, I strive to make a positive impact through my actions. I believe true leadership is measured not by recognition, but by the difference you make in the lives of others—and that is what I aim to do every day.
Hines Scholarship
Going to college means more to me than earning a degree—it represents opportunity, growth, and the chance to turn my passion for education into a meaningful career. For me, college is not just the next step after high school; it is the foundation that will prepare me to become an educator who makes a lasting impact on students’ lives.
From a young age, I have been drawn to working with children and helping others learn. Whether through classroom experiences or teaching dance, I have seen how powerful education can be when students feel supported and understood. I have also seen how easily some students can feel overlooked when learning does not fit their needs. These experiences have shaped my desire to become a teacher who creates inclusive, engaging, and student-centered learning environments.
Going to college means I will have the opportunity to gain the knowledge, training, and real-world experience needed to become that kind of educator. I want to learn effective teaching strategies, understand how to support diverse learners, and develop the skills necessary to manage a classroom where every student feels valued. College will challenge me academically, but it will also help me grow personally as I learn to think critically, communicate effectively, and lead with confidence.
What I am trying to accomplish goes beyond simply becoming a teacher. My goal is to build a career in education where I can advocate for students who learn differently and ensure that every child has access to the support they need to succeed. I am especially passionate about incorporating creative and movement-based learning, such as dance, into education. I have seen firsthand how movement can help students stay engaged, express themselves, and better understand concepts that might otherwise feel difficult in a traditional setting.
In addition to becoming an educator, I hope to be a positive role model for my students. I want them to see that learning differences, challenges, or unique personalities are not limitations but strengths. I also want to create a classroom environment where students feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and be themselves without fear of judgment. I believe that when students feel emotionally supported, they are more likely to succeed academically and personally.
For me, college is also about proving to myself that I am capable of reaching my goals through hard work and dedication. It represents perseverance and the commitment I have made to my future. I know that the path to becoming an educator requires continuous learning and growth, and I am ready to take on that responsibility.
Ultimately, going to college is my opportunity to turn passion into purpose. I am not just pursuing a career—I am preparing to make a difference in the lives of students. My goal is to become an educator who inspires confidence, fosters inclusion, and helps every student realize their full potential.
Charles B. Brazelton Memorial Scholarship
One of the things that has always made me stand out is that I tend to be very quiet in group settings, especially when I’m around people I don’t know well. In classrooms, meetings, or new environments, I often prefer to observe first before I speak. At times, this has made me seem shy or even uninterested, but in reality, I am usually paying close attention to everything happening around me. I take in details, listen carefully, and think before I respond.
However, that quiet side changes completely when I’m with people I’m comfortable with. Around close friends, family, or in familiar environments like dance, I become much more expressive, talkative, and confident. I laugh easily, share ideas freely, and often take on a more outgoing role. It surprises people sometimes to see both sides of me, but I’ve come to understand that I’m not one or the other—I simply adjust based on my environment.
Growing up, this difference in personality sometimes felt awkward. Teachers or peers would assume I was too quiet or unsure of myself, when in reality I just needed time to feel comfortable. Over time, I learned that there is value in both parts of my personality. My quieter side allows me to be thoughtful, observant, and patient. My more outgoing side helps me connect deeply with people and build strong relationships once I feel at ease.
This has especially influenced me in education and teaching. When working with students, I understand that not every child is going to speak up immediately or feel confident right away. Some students need time, safety, and trust before they show their full personality. Because of my own experience, I try to create spaces where students don’t feel pressured to be “loud” or outgoing to be noticed. Instead, I focus on making sure every student is seen, even the quiet ones.
What once felt like a weakness has actually become a strength. Being quiet in some settings has helped me become a better listener and more empathetic person. Being expressive in safe spaces has shown me the importance of trust and connection. Together, these two sides of me have shaped how I relate to others and how I hope to lead in the future.
I’ve learned that being “too quiet” isn’t a flaw—it’s just one part of how I show up in the world, and when I’m in the right environment, my voice is always there.
Christian Fitness Association General Scholarship
I am pursuing higher education with a deep commitment to becoming an educator who creates inclusive, engaging, and supportive learning environments for all students. I believe I should be considered for this scholarship because of my dedication to academic growth, my hands-on experience working with diverse learners, and my passion for using education as a tool to positively impact my community. My journey has been shaped by both my academic efforts and my extracurricular involvement, particularly in teaching and dance instruction, which have strengthened my leadership, communication, and adaptability skills.
Academically, I have worked consistently to build a strong foundation in education-related coursework and field experiences. I take my studies seriously because I understand that my future students will depend on my knowledge, preparation, and ability to apply what I have learned in real classroom settings. Through my coursework and observations, I have gained insight into instructional strategies, classroom management, and the importance of differentiated instruction. These academic experiences have helped me connect theory to practice and have reinforced my desire to become a teacher who meets students where they are.
Beyond the classroom, I have actively engaged in extracurricular experiences that have shaped my leadership abilities and strengthened my passion for working with children. One of the most meaningful roles I have held is as a dance instructor. Teaching dance has allowed me to work with students of various ages, backgrounds, and abilities. In this role, I have learned how to adapt choreography and instruction to meet the needs of different learners. Some students require step-by-step guidance, while others thrive with creative freedom. This experience has taught me patience, flexibility, and the importance of meeting students at their individual levels.
In addition to dance instruction, I have also participated in classroom observation and fieldwork experiences where I worked closely with students in academic settings. One experience that stands out involved a student with a learning disability who struggled with processing instructions and staying focused. At first, I noticed that the student became easily frustrated and disengaged during lessons. However, by breaking down tasks into smaller steps, offering one-on-one support, and providing consistent encouragement, I saw a significant change in their engagement and confidence. This experience reinforced my belief that every student is capable of success when given the appropriate support and instruction tailored to their needs.
These experiences have also helped me develop strong leadership skills. I have learned that leadership is not about authority, but about service, empathy, and the ability to support others. Whether I am guiding a group of students in a dance class or assisting during classroom activities, I strive to create an environment where everyone feels valued and included. I take pride in being someone who is approachable, patient, and willing to adapt in order to help others succeed.
In addition to my academic and extracurricular involvement, I am deeply committed to personal growth and continuous learning. I actively seek out resources, such as educational articles, teaching videos, and professional development tools, to strengthen my understanding of effective teaching practices. I believe that being an effective educator requires ongoing learning and reflection, and I am dedicated to improving my skills so I can better serve my future students.
What makes me a strong candidate for this scholarship is not only my academic and extracurricular involvement, but also my purpose and vision for the future. I am pursuing higher education because I want to make a meaningful impact in the field of education. My goal is to create classrooms where all students—regardless of their background or ability—feel supported, challenged, and empowered to succeed. I am especially passionate about incorporating creative and movement-based learning strategies, such as dance, to engage students who may struggle in traditional learning environments.
Receiving this scholarship would significantly support my educational journey by easing financial burdens and allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and field experiences. It would also bring me closer to achieving my long-term goal of becoming an educator who advocates for inclusive, student-centered learning. I am committed to using the opportunities I am given to give back to my community and to make a lasting difference in the lives of my future students.
Ultimately, I am not only preparing for a career in education—I am preparing to be a leader, advocate, and lifelong learner. I am dedicated to building a future where every student feels seen, supported, and capable of success. This scholarship would help me continue that journey and further develop the skills and knowledge I need to turn that vision into reality.
Learner Online Learning Innovator Scholarship for Veterans
In today’s digital world, online platforms and tools have become an essential part of how I learn, grow, and apply my knowledge in education. As a future teacher, I rely on a variety of resources that help me deepen my understanding of instructional strategies, classroom management, and ways to support diverse learners. These tools not only strengthen my academic knowledge but also help me connect theory to real classroom practice.
One of the most valuable platforms I use is YouTube, where I can watch real classroom demonstrations, lesson ideas, and teaching strategies in action. Seeing experienced educators work with students helps me visualize how different approaches can be applied in real time. For example, I often watch videos about differentiated instruction and classroom engagement strategies, which I can later adapt during my own fieldwork and teaching experiences. This has helped me move beyond just reading about teaching methods and actually see how they function in practice.
I also use Google Scholar and educational websites such as Edutopia and ASCD to access research-based articles on education. These resources help me better understand topics like student engagement, inclusion, and learning disabilities. Reading professional research has strengthened my ability to make intentional decisions when working with students. For example, after learning more about how movement supports cognitive development, I became more confident incorporating physical activity into learning—especially during my experience as a dance instructor working with children.
In addition, I use tools like Canva and Google Slides to create lesson materials, presentations, and visual aids. These platforms help me design more engaging and accessible content for students. I’ve learned that visuals and creativity can make a big difference in helping students understand complex ideas. By using these tools, I am able to practice designing lessons that are not only informative but also interactive and student-centered.
Another important resource in my learning journey has been online teacher communities and forums, where educators share advice, classroom ideas, and real experiences. These spaces allow me to learn from both successes and challenges that other teachers face. They also help me feel more connected to the teaching profession and give me practical strategies I can apply during my own field experiences.
Overall, these online platforms and tools have helped me bridge the gap between theory and practice. They have allowed me to see how educational concepts come to life in real classrooms and have given me the confidence to apply what I learn in meaningful ways. Most importantly, they have helped shape my teaching philosophy: that learning should be engaging, inclusive, and adaptable to every student’s needs.
As I continue my education, I plan to keep using these resources to grow as an educator and refine my skills. I believe that combining online learning with hands-on experience will prepare me to create a classroom where all students feel supported and capable of success.

When I think about something I want to build, I don’t just picture a physical object—I picture a classroom. I want to build a space where every student feels safe, included, and inspired to learn. As a future educator, my goal is to create an environment that goes beyond academics and focuses on the whole child, especially those who may feel overlooked or struggle in traditional settings.
My passion for building this kind of classroom comes from my experiences working with students in both academic settings and as a dance instructor. I have seen how confidence can grow when students are given the opportunity to express themselves and learn in ways that work for them. Not every child learns through lectures or worksheets, and I want to build a learning space that embraces creativity, movement, and hands-on experiences. By incorporating approaches like dance and interactive activities, I hope to reach students who might otherwise feel disconnected from school.
What I am building is more than just a classroom—it is a foundation of trust and belonging. I want my future students to know that their voices matter and that their differences are strengths, not limitations. This means being intentional about how I teach, how I communicate, and how I support each individual. I plan to build strong relationships with my students by listening to them, encouraging them, and adapting to their needs. When students feel valued, they are more likely to take risks, participate, and believe in themselves.
This vision will have a positive impact not only on me but also on my community. For me, building this kind of future means growing into a leader who advocates for inclusive education and equitable opportunities. For my community, it means creating a generation of students who feel confident, capable, and supported. Education has the power to shape lives, and by building a classroom rooted in empathy and inclusion, I hope to contribute to a stronger, more understanding community.
Ultimately, I am building a future where education is not one-size-fits-all, but instead a place where every student has the opportunity to succeed. This goal drives my passion for higher education and motivates me to continue learning and growing as an educator. Step by step, I am working toward building a classroom—and a future—that makes a meaningful difference.

Candi L. Oree Leadership Scholarship
Growing up, my understanding of disability has been shaped not only by observation but through meaningful, personal experiences that have influenced my beliefs, relationships, and future aspirations. These experiences have taught me the value of patience, empathy, and advocacy, while also guiding me toward a career centered on inclusion and support for diverse learners.
I have always been passionate about education and working with children, which is why I am pursuing a path in teaching. Throughout my experiences in classrooms and community settings, I have interacted with students of varying abilities, including those with learning disabilities and developmental challenges. These interactions have deeply impacted the way I view both education and human connection. I have learned that disability does not define a person’s potential; rather, it highlights the importance of adapting environments to meet individual needs.
During my classroom observations, I had the opportunity to work closely with a student who had a learning disability that affected their ability to stay focused and process instructions at the same pace as their peers. At first, I noticed that the student often became frustrated and would disengage during lessons, especially when directions were given quickly or all at once. Instead of seeing this as a lack of effort, I began to understand that the student simply needed a different approach to learning. I started breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps and offering one-on-one guidance when possible. I also used encouragement and positive reinforcement to build their confidence. Over time, I saw a noticeable change—the student became more willing to participate and showed pride in completing their work. This experience shifted my perspective on disability, reinforcing my belief that success in the classroom is not about fitting students into a single teaching method, but about adapting instruction to meet their individual needs.
My experiences have also shaped my relationships. I have developed stronger communication skills, learning to listen with intention and respond with compassion. Whether collaborating with peers, supporting students, or interacting with families, I strive to build connections rooted in understanding and respect. These relationships have taught me that leadership is not about authority, but about service—uplifting others and creating spaces where everyone feels valued.
In terms of leadership, I have taken on roles in both academic and extracurricular settings that allowed me to advocate for inclusion. As a future educator and dance instructor, I have led groups of students with diverse needs, ensuring that each individual feels included and capable. For example, I have adapted lessons to accommodate different learning styles and physical abilities, allowing all students to participate fully. These experiences have strengthened my ability to lead with flexibility, creativity, and empathy.
Looking ahead, my career aspirations are centered on becoming a teacher who not only educates but also advocates for students with disabilities. I aim to create a classroom environment where differences are embraced and all students are given the tools they need to succeed. I am particularly interested in incorporating movement and creative expression, such as dance, into learning, as I have seen firsthand how these approaches can empower students who may struggle in traditional settings.
Ultimately, my experiences with disability have shaped me into a more compassionate, determined, and inclusive individual. They have influenced my beliefs about equity in education, strengthened my relationships through empathy, and guided me toward a career where I can make a meaningful difference. I am committed to continuing this work and becoming a leader who ensures that every student, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive.

I believe that a life of service is defined by consistent actions, compassion for others, and a genuine desire to make a positive difference. For me, service is not limited to large or extraordinary efforts—it is found in everyday moments where I choose to support, encourage, and uplift those around me. Through my experiences and goals, I strive to embody a life of service by using my time, skills, and education to help others grow and succeed.
One of the most meaningful ways I have lived out this commitment is through working with students in educational settings. Whether through volunteering or assisting others academically, I have made it a priority to support those who may need extra guidance. I have seen how even small acts, such as helping someone understand a concept or offering encouragement, can build confidence and motivation. These experiences have reinforced my belief that service is about being present, patient, and willing to invest in others.
Living a life of service also requires empathy and understanding. I make an effort to listen to others, respect their experiences, and respond with kindness. Everyone faces challenges that are not always visible, and I believe it is important to approach others with compassion rather than judgment. This mindset has shaped how I interact with people in both my personal life and my academic journey. It has also strengthened my ability to connect with others and create supportive environments.
My decision to pursue a degree in education is directly connected to my desire to serve. Teaching is one of the most impactful forms of service because it allows me to influence future generations. As a future educator, I will have the opportunity to not only teach academic content but also to support students emotionally and socially. I want to create a classroom where every student feels valued, respected, and capable of achieving their goals. By fostering a positive and inclusive environment, I can help students develop confidence and a love for learning.
In addition, I plan to use my education to advocate for students who may not always have a voice. This includes students with diverse learning needs, those from underserved communities, and those who may feel overlooked. I want to ensure that all students have access to the resources and support they need to succeed. By working closely with families, colleagues, and community members, I can help create stronger support systems that benefit students both inside and outside the classroom.
Service, to me, is also about long-term impact. It is not only about what I do today but about how I can contribute to a better future. By continuing my education and growing as a professional, I will be better equipped to serve others effectively. I am committed to lifelong learning so that I can continue improving and adapting to meet the needs of those I serve.
Ultimately, I embody a life of service by choosing to put others first, by leading with compassion, and by using my strengths to make a difference. Through my education and future career, I will continue to serve by empowering others, creating opportunities, and contributing to a more supportive and inclusive community.

I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Education with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. I chose this path because I believe education is one of the most powerful ways to make a lasting impact on individuals and communities. From a young age, I have been inspired by teachers who created supportive and encouraging learning environments, and I knew that I wanted to have that same influence on future generations. My goal is to help students build strong academic foundations while also developing confidence, curiosity, and a love for learning.
I am particularly passionate about working with students during their early educational years because this is a critical stage in their development. Elementary school is where children begin to shape their attitudes toward education and their belief in their own abilities. I want to create a classroom environment where all students feel valued, supported, and capable of success. I am especially interested in supporting students with diverse learning needs and ensuring that every child has access to the resources and encouragement they need to thrive.
At this time, I do not plan to pursue a career in the United States Air Force or any other branch of military service. While I have great respect for those who serve and protect our country, my personal calling lies in education and community service. I believe that I can best contribute to society by working directly with students and helping to shape the future through teaching and mentorship.
After graduation, my primary goal is to begin my career as an elementary school teacher. I plan to continue growing professionally by gaining classroom experience, collaborating with other educators, and pursuing additional certifications that will allow me to better serve diverse learners. I am committed to becoming a lifelong learner so that I can stay informed about new teaching strategies and best practices in education.
In the long term, I hope to take on leadership roles within the education field. This may include mentoring new teachers, contributing to curriculum development, or advocating for policies that promote equitable access to quality education. I also hope to remain actively involved in my community, working with families and organizations to support student success both inside and outside of the classroom.
Pursuing a degree in education is more than a career choice for me—it is a commitment to making a meaningful difference. I want to be a teacher who not only helps students succeed academically but also inspires them to believe in themselves and their potential. By investing in education, I am investing in the future, and I am determined to use my degree to create positive and lasting change.
Women in STEM Scholarship
The opportunity to be part of a community of women empowered by knowledge, driven by curiosity, and prepared to contribute to the STEM field is deeply meaningful to me. As a student pursuing a career in education, I may not follow a traditional STEM path, but I strongly believe that education—especially in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—is the foundation that empowers future generations to innovate, problem-solve, and lead. My goal is to be part of that foundation by inspiring curiosity and confidence in young learners, particularly young women.
Curiosity has always been a guiding force in my academic journey. I have always enjoyed learning how things work, asking questions, and exploring new ideas. However, I have also seen how easily curiosity can be discouraged when students lack support or confidence. This is especially true for young women, who are sometimes underrepresented or underestimated in STEM-related areas. I want to help change that narrative by creating learning environments where curiosity is encouraged and every student feels capable of succeeding.
As I continue my education, I am working to build the knowledge and skills necessary to make STEM subjects more accessible and engaging for students. I believe that early exposure is key. When students are introduced to STEM concepts in a positive and supportive way, they are more likely to develop interest and confidence in those areas. As a future educator, I plan to incorporate hands-on learning, interactive activities, and real-world applications into my teaching. By doing so, I hope to show students—especially young girls—that STEM is not intimidating, but exciting and full of possibilities.
Being a woman pursuing higher education has also shaped my perspective. I understand the importance of representation and encouragement. When students see someone who looks like them succeeding, it builds confidence and motivation. I want to be that role model for my students, demonstrating that with dedication and curiosity, they can achieve their goals. I also hope to support and uplift other women in my field by fostering collaboration, mentorship, and shared growth.
Beyond the classroom, I aim to contribute to a culture that values knowledge and continuous learning. STEM is constantly evolving, and staying curious is essential for growth and innovation. I plan to continue developing my own skills and understanding so that I can provide the best possible education for my students. By doing so, I will not only teach content but also model the importance of lifelong learning.
This scholarship represents more than financial support—it represents a commitment to empowering women to lead and innovate. Receiving this opportunity would allow me to continue my education with greater focus and determination. It would also affirm my role in contributing to a future where more women feel confident pursuing and succeeding in STEM fields.
Ultimately, I may not work in a traditional STEM profession, but I will play a critical role in shaping the minds of those who do. By encouraging curiosity, building confidence, and creating inclusive learning environments, I hope to inspire the next generation of women to explore, innovate, and make meaningful contributions to the world through STEM.
Ojeda Multi-County Youth Scholarship
Growing up in the inner city shaped who I am in ways that are both challenging and empowering. It taught me resilience, responsibility, and the importance of perseverance. While my environment presented obstacles, it also gave me the strength and determination to pursue a better future through education and hard work.
Living in the inner city often meant being surrounded by limited resources and opportunities. Schools were sometimes overcrowded, and access to academic support or extracurricular activities was not always readily available. There were moments when it felt like the odds were stacked against students who wanted to succeed. In addition, financial challenges were a constant reality. My family worked hard to provide stability, but there were times when we had to make sacrifices. These experiences made me realize early on that if I wanted to achieve my goals, I would need to stay focused and motivated despite the circumstances around me.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was staying motivated in an environment where distractions and negative influences were present. It was easy to feel discouraged or to lose sight of long-term goals when immediate obstacles seemed overwhelming. However, I made a conscious decision to focus on my education as a way to create opportunities for myself. I reminded myself that my environment did not define my future. Instead, my choices, work ethic, and determination would shape the path I followed.
Another challenge was balancing responsibilities at home with my academic commitments. Helping my family while keeping up with schoolwork required strong time management and discipline. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed, but those experiences taught me how to prioritize and stay organized. Over time, I developed the ability to manage multiple responsibilities while still maintaining my focus on my goals. These skills have continued to help me succeed in my academic journey.
Despite these challenges, growing up in the inner city also provided valuable lessons and strengths. It taught me how to adapt, how to remain strong during difficult times, and how to appreciate every opportunity I am given. I learned the importance of community and supporting others who may be facing similar struggles. These experiences have shaped my desire to give back and make a positive impact in the lives of others.
Education became my pathway forward. I saw it as a way to break barriers and create a future with more opportunities. Through hard work and determination, I have continued to pursue my goals and work toward a career in education. I want to become a teacher who understands the challenges students face because I have experienced them myself. I hope to create a classroom environment where students feel supported, encouraged, and inspired to succeed regardless of their circumstances.
Overcoming the challenges of growing up in the inner city has not been easy, but it has made me stronger and more determined. I have learned that obstacles are not meant to stop me, but to push me to grow. Every challenge I faced helped shape my mindset and strengthened my belief in my ability to succeed.
Today, I carry those lessons with me as I continue my educational journey. I am proud of where I come from and grateful for the resilience it has given me. My experiences have not only prepared me for my future but have also inspired me to help others overcome their own challenges. I am committed to using my education to make a difference and to prove that where you start does not determine where you can go.
Rose Ifebigh Memorial Scholarship
I would describe myself as a compassionate, determined, and purpose-driven individual shaped by my family, my educational experiences, and my desire to serve others. Growing up, I was taught the importance of hard work, respect, and perseverance. These values have guided me through challenges and motivated me to pursue higher education. I have always been drawn to helping others, especially in educational settings, which has influenced my decision to become a teacher. While I do not have a direct connection to Nigeria or the African diaspora, I deeply value cultural diversity and the opportunity to learn from different perspectives.
Learning in environments with diverse cultures and backgrounds has been one of the most impactful parts of my educational journey. Being exposed to people with different traditions, beliefs, and life experiences has taught me the importance of empathy and open-mindedness. Although I am not an international student, I have experienced what it means to step outside of my comfort zone and engage with perspectives different from my own. These experiences have helped me grow both personally and academically by teaching me how to communicate effectively, respect differences, and appreciate the value of inclusion.
Through my education, I have gained new perspectives about myself and the world around me. I have learned that growth often comes from challenges and that stepping outside of familiar environments can lead to meaningful self-discovery. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that every individual has a unique story and set of experiences that shape who they are. This realization has strengthened my ability to listen, understand, and connect with others. Academically, I have developed critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of how education can influence not only individual success but also entire communities. Personally, I have learned resilience, patience, and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset.
My academic interests in education are directly connected to the impact I hope to make in my community. I plan to become an elementary teacher who creates an inclusive and supportive classroom environment where all students feel valued and capable. I am especially passionate about supporting students with diverse learning needs and ensuring they receive equitable opportunities to succeed. Education has the power to shape futures, and I want to be part of that transformation by helping students build confidence, develop skills, and believe in their potential.
Receiving this scholarship would provide essential support as I continue my educational journey. It would help reduce financial stress and allow me to focus more fully on my studies and professional development. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to achieving my goal of making a positive difference in the lives of others. I am committed to using my education not only for personal success but to serve my community and contribute to a more inclusive and understanding society.
Jeannine Schroeder Women in Public Service Memorial Scholarship
One of the most important social issues I am working to address is the lack of equitable access to education and support for students with diverse learning needs. As someone pursuing a career in education, I have become increasingly aware of how many students are overlooked or underserved simply because they require different approaches to learning. This issue is significant because education plays a critical role in shaping opportunities, confidence, and long-term success. When students do not receive the support they need, it can affect not only their academic performance but also their sense of self-worth.
I am actively working to address this issue through both my academic path and my hands-on experiences. By pursuing a degree in education, I am gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to support students in meaningful ways. My coursework has introduced me to concepts such as differentiated instruction, inclusive teaching practices, and the importance of understanding each student’s unique strengths and challenges. These tools are essential in creating classrooms where all students have the opportunity to succeed.
In addition to my studies, I have sought opportunities to serve and engage with others in educational settings. Through experiences like volunteering and working with students, I have seen firsthand how impactful it can be when someone takes the time to provide extra support and encouragement. Whether it is helping a student understand a difficult concept or simply offering reassurance, these moments can build confidence and motivation. I make it a priority to create a positive and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and expressing themselves.
Addressing this social issue also involves advocating for awareness and understanding. Many students with different learning needs face stigma or are unfairly labeled. I work to challenge these perceptions by promoting empathy and inclusion in my interactions with others. I believe that when people are educated about diverse learning styles and abilities, they are more likely to create supportive and accepting environments. Even small actions, such as encouraging respectful communication and patience, can contribute to a larger cultural shift.
While I recognize that this issue is complex and cannot be solved overnight, I am committed to making a difference one step at a time. My future goal is to become an educator who not only teaches academic content but also advocates for equitable opportunities for all students. I want to ensure that every child, regardless of their background or challenges, feels valued and capable of achieving their goals.
Ultimately, addressing inequities in education is about more than improving academic outcomes—it is about creating a more just and inclusive society. By continuing my education, gaining experience, and promoting understanding, I am working toward making a positive impact. I believe that change begins with individuals who are willing to take action, and I am dedicated to being one of those individuals.

Smith & Moore Uplift Scholarship
Pursuing a career in the field of education will allow me to benefit society by shaping future generations, promoting equity in learning, and helping students build the skills they need to succeed in an ever-changing world. As an aspiring elementary school teacher, I believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for social progress. Teachers do more than deliver lessons—they influence mindsets, nurture confidence, and inspire lifelong curiosity.
Education plays a foundational role in preparing students for careers in STEM and other essential fields. By teaching young learners strong skills in reading, mathematics, science, and critical thinking, I can help lay the groundwork for their future success. Early exposure to problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration encourages students to explore subjects they may not have otherwise considered. When children develop confidence in their abilities at a young age, they are more likely to pursue challenging academic paths later in life. As an educator, I would have the opportunity to spark that confidence and curiosity.
Growing up in a bilingual border community has shown me the importance of representation and inclusion in the classroom. Many students come from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and it is essential that they see their experiences valued in their education. By becoming a teacher, I can create a classroom environment where all students feel respected, supported, and capable. Inclusive teaching practices not only improve academic outcomes but also foster empathy, understanding, and unity within society. When students learn in environments that celebrate diversity, they grow into adults who appreciate and respect differences.
In addition, education helps address social inequalities. Students who receive strong academic support and encouragement are more likely to graduate, pursue higher education, and contribute positively to their communities. Teachers have the power to identify students’ strengths, provide mentorship, and guide them toward opportunities they may not have imagined for themselves. I want to be the kind of educator who helps close achievement gaps and ensures that every child, regardless of background, has access to quality learning experiences.
Another way pursuing a career in education benefits society is by promoting lifelong learning. In a rapidly evolving world driven by technology and innovation, adaptability and critical thinking are essential skills. By encouraging students to ask questions, think independently, and approach problems with creativity, I can help prepare them not only for exams but for real-world challenges. Education builds informed citizens who can make thoughtful decisions, participate actively in their communities, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Ultimately, my goal is to create a classroom that fosters curiosity, resilience, and confidence. I want my students to leave my classroom believing in their potential and understanding that their education is a tool for empowerment. By investing in the growth of young learners, I am investing in the future of our society. Pursuing a career in education will allow me to serve as both a teacher and a mentor, helping to shape responsible, knowledgeable, and compassionate individuals who will positively impact the world around them.
Patricia Lindsey Jackson Foundation-Mary Louise Lindsey Service Scholarship
One of the most meaningful ways I have served my community was through volunteering at my local zoo, STS Animal Presentations, where students teach other students about different animals and their environments. This experience allowed me to combine my passion for education with service, and it helped shape my understanding of leadership, responsibility, and faith.
I was inspired to participate because I have always enjoyed working with others and sharing knowledge. When I learned about the opportunity to educate younger students about animals, I saw it as a chance to make learning engaging and meaningful. I wanted to help create an environment where students could feel excited about science and curious about the world around them. I also believed that by teaching others, I could grow in my own confidence and communication skills.
During my time volunteering, I was responsible for learning detailed information about specific animals and presenting those facts in a way that was both understandable and interesting. I interacted with students of different ages, answering questions and encouraging them to think critically about wildlife and conservation. At first, speaking in front of groups was intimidating. I had to overcome nervousness and self-doubt, especially when I worried about making mistakes or not explaining something clearly. However, with practice and preparation, I became more confident in my ability to communicate effectively.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was learning how to adapt my teaching style. Not every student learns the same way, and I had to find creative ways to explain concepts so that everyone could understand. Some students were shy or hesitant to participate, while others were eager but needed guidance to stay focused. This taught me patience and flexibility. I learned that being a leader means meeting people where they are and adjusting your approach to support their learning.
Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of service. I realized that service is not just about volunteering time—it is about making a genuine effort to connect with others and leave a positive impact. By helping students learn something new and feel confident asking questions, I was contributing to their growth in a meaningful way. Leadership, I discovered, is not about being in charge but about guiding, encouraging, and supporting others so they can succeed.
My faith played an important role throughout this experience. There were moments when I felt nervous or unsure of myself, but I leaned on my faith for strength and confidence. I reminded myself that I was given this opportunity for a reason and that I could use my abilities to serve others. My faith helped me stay patient, positive, and focused on the purpose behind my work. It also encouraged me to treat every student with kindness and respect, recognizing the value in each individual.
This experience has had a lasting impact on my goals and aspirations. It strengthened my desire to pursue a career in education, where I can continue to inspire and support students. It also showed me that even small acts of service, like teaching a group of students about animals, can make a difference.
Serving through STS Animal Presentations taught me that service, leadership, and faith are deeply connected. Together, they allow us to grow, uplift others, and create meaningful change. This is a lesson I will carry with me as I continue working toward making a positive impact in my community and beyond.
Jim Maxwell Memorial Scholarship
The opportunity to be considered for the Jim Maxwell Memorial Scholarship is deeply meaningful to me because it represents more than financial assistance—it represents faith, perseverance, and the belief that dedication and trust in God can open doors to a brighter future. My journey toward higher education has not been without challenges, but through every obstacle, my faith has remained my anchor and source of strength.
Growing up, I learned early on that success requires hard work and resilience. There were moments when balancing academic responsibilities, personal obligations, and financial pressures felt overwhelming. At times, I questioned whether I was strong enough to continue pushing forward. However, during those moments of doubt, my faith reminded me that challenges are not placed in our lives to defeat us, but to strengthen us. Prayer, reflection, and trust in God’s plan gave me peace when circumstances felt uncertain.
My faith has shaped the way I approach both struggles and achievements. When I faced academic stress or setbacks, I leaned on my belief that perseverance and prayer would guide me through. Instead of allowing fear to take control, I chose to trust that each obstacle was part of a greater purpose. This mindset helped me remain focused on my goals and maintain hope even when progress felt slow. Faith taught me patience, gratitude, and humility—qualities that have allowed me to grow not only as a student but also as a person.
One of my greatest triumphs has been continuing my education despite challenges. Being able to pursue a college degree is a blessing I do not take lightly. Every completed semester represents commitment, sacrifice, and trust in God’s guidance. I have learned that success is not measured solely by achievements, but by the courage to continue moving forward. My faith has helped me celebrate small victories and remain grounded during moments of accomplishment.
As I work toward becoming an educator, I plan to use my faith as a guiding force in my future career. I want to be a source of encouragement and compassion for my students, modeling integrity, patience, and kindness in everything I do. Selected Paragraph
From Meditations, Book II, by Marcus Aurelius:
“You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
Essay
In this brief yet profound statement, Marcus Aurelius argues that true strength does not arise from controlling circumstances, but from mastering one’s internal response to them. His underlying meaning is that human suffering is amplified not by events themselves, but by our judgments about those events. By shifting focus from the uncontrollable external world to the disciplined governance of one’s own thoughts, Marcus presents a philosophy of resilience grounded in self-command rather than domination of fate.
At first glance, the statement appears motivational, almost simplistic. However, its philosophical depth lies in its radical redefinition of power. In the Roman world, power was typically associated with authority, conquest, and political control—forces Marcus himself possessed as emperor. Yet he deliberately redirects the concept of power inward. This inward turn suggests that external dominance is fragile and temporary, while internal discipline is enduring. By claiming that we have no power over outside events, Marcus confronts the human desire for certainty and control. Illness, loss, betrayal, and death exist beyond personal command. To anchor one’s stability in the hope of controlling such forces is to guarantee anxiety and frustration.
The second sentence—“Realize this, and you will find strength”—reveals the practical implication of this insight. Strength, in Stoic philosophy, is not emotional suppression nor indifference. Rather, it is clarity: the ability to distinguish what depends on us from what does not. Marcus implies that once a person accepts this boundary, emotional turbulence loses much of its force. The source of distress is often the illusion that events should conform to our expectations. When that illusion dissolves, resistance softens into acceptance, and acceptance becomes empowerment.
Importantly, Marcus is not advocating passivity. Recognizing that external events are beyond our control does not mean abandoning action. Instead, it refines action. A person cannot control the outcome of a conversation, but they can control their tone and honesty. A student cannot control every exam question, but they can control their preparation and focus. The Stoic distinction redirects effort toward what is truly actionable. This philosophy promotes responsibility rather than resignation.
There is also a moral dimension embedded within the statement. By placing power within the mind, Marcus locates virtue in intention and character. If strength comes from internal governance, then ethical integrity becomes the highest form of power. A person who maintains justice, patience, and composure despite adversity demonstrates mastery not over others, but over self. In this way, Marcus elevates self-discipline above domination. His philosophy subtly critiques societies that equate power with control over others, suggesting instead that the most formidable individual is the one who remains steady amid chaos.
The enduring relevance of this passage lies in its psychological insight. Modern life is filled with uncertainty—economic instability, social conflict, personal setbacks. The temptation to control every outcome often leads to chronic stress. Marcus offers an alternative: peace through cognitive discipline. By regulating interpretation rather than circumstance, individuals cultivate resilience. Strength becomes less about resisting hardship and more about shaping perception.
Ultimately, Marcus Aurelius teaches that the boundary between suffering and strength is drawn within the mind. The world will remain unpredictable; events will unfold beyond personal preference. Yet within that unpredictability lies a stable domain: one’s judgments, choices, and responses. To recognize and inhabit that domain is, in Marcus’s view, the essence of strength. His statement endures not because it promises comfort, but because it offers freedom—the freedom that comes from mastering the only realm that has ever truly belonged to us: the self.
Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
Mental health is deeply important to me as a student because it directly affects academic success, personal growth, and overall well-being. As students, we are often expected to manage coursework, deadlines, financial pressures, family responsibilities, and future planning all at once. Without strong mental health, it becomes difficult to focus, stay motivated, or perform at our best. I have learned that caring for mental health is not a sign of weakness but a foundation for resilience and long-term success.
Throughout my college journey, I have experienced the stress that can come from balancing multiple responsibilities. There have been moments when academic pressure felt overwhelming, and I had to remind myself that asking for help is not failure—it is strength. Understanding this has changed the way I view mental health. I now see it as something that requires intentional care, just like physical health. When students prioritize their emotional well-being, they are better equipped to learn, build relationships, and achieve their goals.
Mental health is also important to me because I am pursuing a career in education, where emotional awareness and support play a critical role. Students cannot learn effectively if they feel anxious, unheard, or unsupported. As a future educator, I recognize that promoting mental health in the classroom will be just as important as teaching academic content. Children look to teachers for stability and encouragement, and I want to create environments where students feel safe expressing their thoughts and emotions.
In my community, I advocate for mental health in both small and meaningful ways. Within my school environment, I encourage open conversations about stress and self-care among my peers. Sometimes advocacy begins simply by checking in on others, listening without judgment, and reminding classmates that they are not alone in their struggles. I make it a point to speak positively about seeking counseling or academic support services, helping reduce stigma around asking for help.
At home, I advocate for mental health by promoting communication and balance. I try to model healthy coping strategies such as organizing my time, setting realistic goals, and taking breaks when needed. By sharing my experiences and normalizing discussions about stress and emotions, I help create a space where family members feel comfortable expressing themselves. Even small conversations can make a difference in breaking down the silence that often surrounds mental health topics.
Additionally, I practice self-advocacy by setting boundaries and recognizing when I need rest. As students, it can be easy to feel guilty for taking breaks, but I have learned that burnout benefits no one. Prioritizing self-care allows me to remain focused, compassionate, and productive. By modeling this balance, I hope to inspire others to value their own well-being.
Mental health matters because it shapes how we think, feel, and interact with the world. As a student and future educator, I am committed to promoting emotional wellness, reducing stigma, and encouraging supportive communities. Receiving the Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship would support not only my academic journey but also my commitment to advocating for mental health awareness and empowerment in every space I occupy.
Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
Education has been the driving force behind my personal growth, resilience, and sense of purpose. It has shaped not only my academic goals but also my vision for the kind of impact I hope to have in the world. Through both challenges and triumphs, education has given me direction, strengthened my character, and inspired me to pursue a future rooted in service and leadership. It has taught me that dreaming big is important, but rising higher requires perseverance, discipline, and faith in oneself.
Growing up, I understood that education represented opportunity. My family emphasized the importance of hard work and dedication, even during difficult times. While we faced challenges that required sacrifice and resilience, those experiences shaped my perspective and motivated me to take my studies seriously. I learned early on that success would not simply be handed to me; it would require commitment, patience, and persistence. Watching my family work tirelessly to create stability reinforced my desire to pursue higher education and build a future that honors their sacrifices.
Throughout my academic journey, I have encountered obstacles that tested my determination. Balancing coursework, field experiences, and personal responsibilities has not always been easy. There were semesters when the workload felt overwhelming and moments when self-doubt crept in. Managing financial pressures alongside academic expectations required careful planning and strong time management. However, each challenge strengthened my resilience. I learned how to prioritize tasks, seek guidance from mentors, and push forward even when circumstances felt uncertain. These experiences taught me that setbacks are not failures—they are opportunities for growth.
Education has also shaped my professional direction in profound ways. As I progressed through my studies, I discovered my passion for becoming an elementary educator. Through coursework and classroom observations, I saw firsthand how transformative a supportive teacher can be. Teachers have the ability to shape not only academic success but also a child’s confidence and sense of belonging. I realized that I want to be the kind of educator who creates safe, inclusive environments where students feel valued and capable.
My studies have given me a deeper understanding of diverse learning styles, differentiated instruction, and the importance of meeting students where they are. I have learned that education is not one-size-fits-all. Each child comes into the classroom with unique experiences, strengths, and challenges. This realization strengthened my commitment to equity and inclusion. I want to ensure that every student—regardless of background or ability—has access to the tools and encouragement necessary to thrive.
The challenges I have overcome have also given me empathy. Experiencing stress, balancing responsibilities, and navigating uncertainty has allowed me to better understand what it feels like to struggle. This perspective will guide how I support my future students. I want to be patient with them during difficult moments and to model perseverance when obstacles arise. Education taught me that growth often happens outside of comfort zones, and I plan to help my students view challenges as opportunities rather than limitations.
Looking ahead, I hope to use my education to create a better future for both myself and others. Personally, earning my degree represents stability, independence, and the ability to give back to my family and community. Professionally, it provides a platform to influence future generations. As an elementary teacher, I will have the opportunity to shape young minds during critical developmental years. I plan to foster a love of learning, encourage critical thinking, and build students’ confidence so they believe in their own potential.
Beyond the classroom, I hope to advocate for equitable educational practices and continue growing as a leader. I am interested in pursuing additional certifications and professional development opportunities that will expand my ability to serve diverse learners. Eventually, I hope to take on leadership roles within my school community, mentoring other educators and contributing to initiatives that promote inclusion and student success.
Education has given me more than knowledge—it has given me purpose. It has transformed uncertainty into direction and challenges into stepping stones. The Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship reflects the very journey I am on: setting ambitious goals and committing to the hard work required to achieve them. With continued dedication and support, I am determined to rise above obstacles and use my education to uplift others.
Dreaming big means believing in possibilities beyond present circumstances. Rising higher means acting on those beliefs with courage and perseverance. Education has equipped me with both the vision and the tools to build a meaningful future. I am committed to using what I have learned to inspire, support, and empower others—ensuring that the opportunities education has given me are passed forward to the next generation.

I believe that making a positive impact on the world begins with serving others in meaningful and consistent ways. For me, that impact starts in the classroom. As I pursue my degree in education, my goal is to become an elementary teacher who not only teaches academic content but also shapes confident, compassionate, and resilient individuals. I believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for change, and by investing in children, we invest in the future of our communities.
My plan to make a positive impact centers on creating inclusive and supportive learning environments. Every child deserves to feel valued, respected, and capable of success. In my future classroom, I will focus on meeting students where they are academically and emotionally. By using differentiated instruction and fostering a culture of kindness and understanding, I hope to ensure that no child feels overlooked or underestimated. I want my students to know that their voices matter and that their potential is limitless.
Beyond academics, I aim to instill strong character values in my students. Children are deeply influenced by the adults in their lives, and teachers play a significant role in shaping how students view themselves and others. I plan to model integrity, empathy, perseverance, and respect in everything I do. By encouraging open conversations, collaboration, and critical thinking, I hope to help students grow into thoughtful individuals who contribute positively to society.
My impact will also extend beyond the classroom through advocacy and community involvement. I am passionate about supporting students with diverse learning needs and ensuring they receive equitable access to resources and opportunities. I plan to work closely with families, colleagues, and community members to create strong support systems for students. Education does not happen in isolation—it requires partnership and shared commitment. By building these relationships, I can help create lasting change that benefits entire communities.
In the long term, I hope to continue my professional growth by pursuing additional certifications or advanced degrees. Expanding my knowledge will allow me to take on leadership roles, mentor other educators, and advocate for policies that promote inclusive and equitable education. I want to be someone who not only impacts students directly but also contributes to improving the educational system as a whole.
Making a positive impact on the world does not always require grand gestures. Often, it begins with small, consistent acts of kindness, dedication, and service. Champions for Intellectual Disability Scholarship
Choosing to pursue a career supporting the intellectual disability community has been one of the most meaningful decisions of my life. My inspiration comes from both my educational experiences and my growing understanding of the barriers individuals with intellectual disabilities often face. I have seen how easily students can be underestimated, overlooked, or misunderstood when they do not fit traditional academic expectations. Those experiences strengthened my desire to become an advocate and educator who ensures that every individual is valued, respected, and given the opportunity to succeed.
As I began my studies in education, I learned more about inclusive classrooms and the importance of individualized support. I quickly realized that many individuals with intellectual disabilities are capable of tremendous growth when provided with proper resources, patience, and encouragement. What inspires me most is their resilience and unique perspective. They remind me that intelligence is not defined by a single measure and that success looks different for every person. I am motivated to challenge outdated stereotypes and help create environments where differences are not just accepted but celebrated.
Throughout my coursework and field experiences, I have developed a deeper appreciation for the role educators and advocates play in shaping opportunities. I have witnessed how small adjustments—such as differentiated instruction, visual supports, or positive reinforcement—can dramatically impact a student’s confidence and progress. These moments have confirmed that this is the path I am meant to follow. Supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities requires compassion, creativity, and commitment, and I am eager to continue building the skills necessary to serve this community effectively.
In my future career, I hope to make a difference by promoting inclusion and empowerment. I want to create classroom environments where students with intellectual disabilities feel safe, capable, and encouraged to reach their fullest potential. Beyond academics, I aim to help students develop independence, communication skills, and self-advocacy. These abilities are essential not only for school success but for long-term personal and professional growth.
I also hope to collaborate closely with families and community organizations to strengthen support systems outside the classroom. Families are powerful partners in a child’s development, and open communication can ensure consistency and shared goals. Additionally, I want to advocate for greater access to services, employment opportunities, and community involvement for individuals with intellectual disabilities. True inclusion extends beyond school walls and into every aspect of society.
Receiving the Champions for Intellectual Disability Scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of continuing my education but also affirm my commitment to this important work. I am dedicated to being a champion for individuals with intellectual disabilities by promoting dignity, equity, and opportunity in all that I do.
Supporting the intellectual disability community is more than a career choice—it is a calling rooted in respect and belief in human potential. I hope to make a lasting difference by empowering individuals to recognize their strengths, pursue their goals, and know that they are valued members of our community.
Tebra Laney Hopson All Is Well Scholarship
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Education with a focus on elementary teaching. I am seeking this degree because I believe education is one of the most powerful ways to create lasting change in individuals, families, and communities. Becoming an educator is not simply a career choice for me—it is a calling rooted in service, compassion, and a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children.
From an early age, I understood the value of having teachers who genuinely care. The educators who made the greatest impact on me were those who created safe and supportive environments where students felt seen, heard, and capable. Their encouragement built my confidence and shaped my academic journey. As I grew older, I realized I wanted to be that same source of support and inspiration for others, especially for young learners who are just beginning to discover their potential.
I am seeking a degree in education because I want to work directly with children during their foundational years of learning. Elementary school is a critical stage in a child’s development, both academically and emotionally. It is during this time that students form their attitudes toward school, self-confidence, and their belief in their own abilities. I want to help build strong academic foundations while also nurturing kindness, resilience, and curiosity.
In addition, I am passionate about serving students with diverse learning needs. Through my coursework and field experiences, I have learned how important it is to provide differentiated instruction and inclusive classroom practices. Beyond the classroom, I see my degree as a platform for broader community impact. Teachers play a significant role not only in educating students but also in strengthening families and communities. I plan to collaborate closely with parents and guardians to support student growth both inside and outside of school. In the future, I also hope to continue my professional development through advanced certifications or a master’s degree so I can expand my ability to advocate for students and contribute to school improvement initiatives.

Jimmy Cardenas Community Leader Scholarship
One meaningful time in my life when I overcame obstacles instead of giving up was during my early classroom field experiences in high school. I had committed to pursuing a career in education, but when I first stepped into a real classroom environment, I quickly realized how challenging teaching could be. I was naturally shy, and standing in front of a group of students felt intimidating. I questioned whether I truly had the confidence and skills necessary to become an effective teacher.
During my time assisting in elementary and middle school classrooms, there were moments when lessons did not go as planned. Students sometimes became distracted, activities took longer than expected, and I occasionally stumbled over my words when explaining concepts. I felt discouraged and embarrassed at times, and part of me wondered if I should reconsider my career path. However, instead of giving up, I chose to view those moments as opportunities to grow.
I began asking mentor teachers for feedback and carefully observed how they handled challenges. I spent extra time preparing lesson materials, practicing what I would say, and thinking through possible classroom scenarios. Rather than allowing my fear to define me, I worked to build my confidence step by step. Over time, I noticed progress. I became more comfortable speaking in front of students, managing small group activities, and adapting when situations changed. That experience taught me resilience and reinforced my belief that growth often comes through discomfort.
In addition to overcoming personal obstacles, I have demonstrated leadership throughout my educational journey. Leadership, to me, is not just about holding a title—it is about setting an example, taking initiative, and supporting others. During my field experiences, I often stepped forward to assist classmates when they felt unsure about lesson planning or classroom tasks. I shared ideas, offered encouragement, and helped create a positive and collaborative environment.
I have also demonstrated leadership by mentoring younger students and serving as a role model. As someone who once struggled with confidence, I understand how powerful encouragement can be. Whether through group projects, volunteering, or classroom settings, I have made it a priority to uplift others and create spaces where everyone feels included. Leadership requires empathy, patience, and responsibility—qualities I strive to practice daily.
Balancing academic responsibilities, field placements, and personal commitments has also required discipline and accountability. By staying organized, meeting deadlines, and maintaining a strong work ethic, I have led by example. I understand that leadership begins with self-management and integrity. When challenges arise, I remain committed to finding solutions rather than excuses.
Overcoming obstacles in the classroom strengthened my determination to become an educator, and demonstrating leadership has prepared me to guide and inspire future students. These experiences have taught me that resilience and leadership go hand in hand. True leaders persist when faced with difficulty and encourage others to do the same.
As I continue pursuing my goals in education, I carry with me the lessons of perseverance, courage, and service. I am proud of the growth I have achieved and confident that the obstacles I have overcome will help me become a stronger leader and a more compassionate teacher in the future.

My background, life experiences, and aspirations have all played a significant role in leading me to pursue a career in K–12 education. Being born in Brownsville, Texas and growing up in a bilingual border community shaped my understanding of diversity, resilience, and opportunity. Living in a community influenced by two cultures allowed me to see the importance of representation and support within schools. From an early age, I recognized that education is not just about academics—it is about belonging, encouragement, and empowerment.
As a child, I was naturally shy and hesitant to speak up in class. I often doubted myself and feared making mistakes. However, I was fortunate to have teachers who noticed my quiet nature and encouraged me to find my voice. Their patience and belief in me gradually built my confidence. Because of their support, I began to see school not as a place of fear, but as a space where I could grow. Those experiences deeply influenced my aspirations. I realized that I wanted to be the kind of teacher who helps students feel seen, valued, and capable—especially those who may struggle with confidence like I once did.
My life experiences further strengthened this desire when I had the opportunity to gain hands-on classroom experience. Working in both elementary and middle school settings allowed me to observe the dedication and responsibility required of educators. I learned how much preparation, flexibility, and care goes into creating effective lessons and managing a classroom. More importantly, I saw how powerful positive relationships between teachers and students can be. A teacher’s encouragement can shape a child’s self-perception and motivation in lasting ways.
Growing up in a bilingual environment also gave me a deeper appreciation for inclusive education. I understand that students come from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and each brings unique strengths to the classroom. These experiences have inspired me to pursue K–12 education with a commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. I want to ensure that all students, regardless of background, feel respected and supported in their learning journey.
My aspiration is to become an elementary school teacher who not only teaches academic content but also fosters confidence, curiosity, and resilience. The early years of education are foundational, and I believe teachers have the opportunity to shape how students view themselves as learners. I want to create a classroom where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow from their experiences. By encouraging a growth mindset and celebrating progress, I hope to empower students to believe in their abilities.
Ultimately, my background has given me perspective, my experiences have given me purpose, and my aspirations continue to guide my path. Education transformed my confidence and helped me discover my voice. Now, I am committed to providing that same sense of encouragement and opportunity to future generations. Pursuing a career in K–12 education allows me to give back to my community and dedicate my life to shaping young minds in meaningful and lasting ways.
RonranGlee Special Needs Teacher Literary Scholarship
I am passionate about the special education teaching profession because I believe every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and capable. Special education is not simply about modifying lessons or providing accommodations—it is about recognizing the unique strengths within each student and helping them discover their voice, confidence, and purpose. To me, special education is rooted in compassion, patience, and advocacy. It is a calling to serve students who may learn differently but are no less intelligent, creative, or capable of success.
Professor Harold Bloom once stated, “The purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence.” I interpret this statement to mean that true teaching goes beyond transferring knowledge. It means helping students become aware of their identity, value, and individuality. A “sense of presence” is the realization that one matters—that one’s thoughts, ideas, abilities, and existence have significance. When a student develops this awareness, learning transforms from something external and imposed into something personal and empowering.
For students with special needs, developing a sense of their own presence can be especially powerful. Many students in special education have faced frustration, misunderstanding, or feelings of inadequacy. They may compare themselves to peers and feel “different” in ways that diminish their confidence. My mission as a future special education teacher is to create an environment where those feelings are replaced with self-recognition and pride. I want my students to understand that their differences are not weaknesses but unique qualities that contribute to the richness of the classroom community.
To guide my students toward experiencing their own presence, I would begin by building meaningful relationships. Trust is foundational. When students know they are safe, respected, and supported, they are more willing to take risks and express themselves. I would take time to learn each student’s strengths, interests, and learning styles. Individualized instruction would not simply be about academic accommodations; it would be about affirming who they are as individuals.
Additionally, I would emphasize growth over comparison. Instead of measuring success solely by standardized expectations, I would celebrate progress—no matter how small it may seem. For a child who struggles with reading, finishing a paragraph independently can be a monumental achievement. Recognizing and celebrating these moments helps students see their own growth and internalize the belief that they are capable learners.
I would also incorporate opportunities for self-expression through art, storytelling, collaborative projects, and reflective activities. These outlets allow students to explore their identities and communicate in ways that align with their strengths. By providing multiple pathways to demonstrate understanding, I would ensure that each child has the opportunity to shine.
Most importantly, I would model advocacy and self-advocacy. I want my students to learn how to articulate their needs and understand their rights. Empowering students to speak up for themselves fosters independence and confidence that extends far beyond the classroom. When a student learns to say, “This is how I learn best,” they are embracing their presence in the world.
My mission is to create a classroom that functions as a community of belonging. I envision a space where differences are celebrated, effort is honored, and every student feels essential. I believe that when students experience their own presence, they become more engaged, resilient, and hopeful about their future.

My career of choice is to become an elementary school teacher. I am passionate about this profession because I believe education has the power to shape not only academic success but also confidence, character, and lifelong opportunity. Teachers play a critical role in influencing how children see themselves and the world around them. I want to be someone who helps students discover their strengths, believe in their potential, and develop a genuine love for learning.
My passion for teaching began at a young age. As a student, I experienced firsthand how impactful a caring and supportive teacher can be. I was once a shy child who hesitated to speak up in class, but through the encouragement of my teachers, I gradually gained confidence. Those experiences showed me that teaching goes far beyond delivering lessons. It involves building relationships, offering guidance, and creating a safe environment where students feel valued. Knowing that I can make that kind of difference in a child’s life motivates me every day to continue pursuing this path.
Throughout my journey toward becoming an educator, I have made several sacrifices to accomplish my personal and educational goals. One of the most significant sacrifices has been dedicating a large portion of my time to academic preparation and field experience. While many of my peers spent their free time relaxing or attending social events, I chose to focus on gaining classroom experience, completing assignments, and preparing myself for my future career. I have spent countless hours creating lesson plans, studying educational strategies, and reflecting on how I can improve as a future teacher.
Balancing responsibilities has also required discipline and sacrifice. Managing coursework, field placements, and personal commitments has not always been easy. There have been moments when I felt overwhelmed, but I reminded myself why I began this journey. Staying committed sometimes meant stepping outside of my comfort zone, pushing through self-doubt, and choosing long-term goals over short-term convenience.
Financial responsibility has also been a factor in my journey. Pursuing higher education requires careful planning and prioritizing my educational expenses. Instead of viewing these challenges as obstacles, I see them as investments in my future. Each sacrifice represents a step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a certified teacher.
Through these experiences, I have learned resilience, time management, and perseverance. I have come to understand that meaningful goals require effort and dedication. The sacrifices I have made have strengthened my determination and deepened my appreciation for the opportunity to pursue my education.
Looking ahead, I remain committed to growing both personally and professionally. I plan to continue gaining classroom experience, expanding my knowledge of child development and inclusive teaching practices, and striving to be the best educator I can be. My ultimate goal is to create a classroom environment where students feel safe, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
Becoming an elementary school teacher is more than a career choice for me—it is a purpose. Every sacrifice I have made has reinforced my passion and commitment. I am ready to continue working hard, knowing that one day I will have the privilege of shaping young minds and making a lasting difference in the lives of my students.

I am interested in pursuing a career in teaching because I believe education has the power to shape lives, build confidence, and create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. From a young age, I admired the way teachers not only taught lessons but also encouraged, supported, and inspired their students. Over time, I realized that teaching is not simply a profession—it is a calling that requires patience, compassion, dedication, and a genuine love for helping others grow.
The female figure who has most inspired me on my educational journey is my kindergarten teacher, Ms. Gallegos. When I first started school, I was extremely shy and afraid to speak up or make new friends. Ms. Gallegos immediately noticed and made it her mission to help me feel safe, seen, and valued in her classroom. She never forced me to change who I was—she simply encouraged me with patience, kindness, and constant support.
Through her gentle guidance, I slowly gained the confidence to raise my hand, participate in group activities, and believe in myself. She created a learning environment filled with warmth and creativity, and for the first time, I felt excited to come to school each day. It was in her classroom that I first realized what I wanted to be when I grew up—an elementary school teacher. Watching the way she uplifted her students and made learning feel magical inspired me deeply. I knew I wanted to do the same for others one day.
Growing up in a bilingual border community allowed me to experience firsthand how important supportive educators are. School was not just a place where I learned academic content; it was a space where I discovered my strengths and developed confidence in my abilities. Teachers like Ms. Gallegos believed in me even when I doubted myself, and their encouragement made a lasting impact on who I am today. Their classrooms were safe spaces where I felt valued and understood, and that feeling is something I hope to recreate for my future students.
As I gained classroom experience at local schools, I began to understand the depth of responsibility and influence teachers carry. Standing in front of students, even for a short time, made me realize how powerful words and actions can be. A teacher can either build confidence or diminish it. That realization strengthened my commitment to becoming the kind of educator who uplifts, motivates, and empowers students.
I am especially drawn to elementary education because those early years are foundational. Children begin forming beliefs about themselves as learners at a young age. I want to be part of shaping positive self-perceptions and helping students discover their strengths. I hope to create a classroom environment that is warm, inclusive, and encouraging—a space where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow.
Now, as I work toward my college degree, I carry everything Ms. Gallegos taught me. Her compassion and belief in me changed the course of my life, and I hope to follow in her footsteps by becoming a teacher who helps students feel confident, capable, and cared for. She did not just teach me my ABCs—she helped me discover my voice and my purpose. Because of her, I am committed to dedicating my life to education and making a meaningful difference in the lives of the students I will one day serve.

One goal I worked hard to reach was gaining real classroom experience before graduating high school and fully committing to my career path in education. Although I had always been interested in becoming a teacher, I knew that truly understanding the profession required more than simply saying it was my dream. I wanted hands-on experience to confirm that teaching was the right path for me and to begin developing the skills necessary to succeed.
When I first decided to pursue education, I felt both excited and nervous. Teaching requires confidence, organization, patience, and strong communication skills—qualities I was still building. Instead of allowing fear to hold me back, I made the decision to actively prepare myself. I enrolled in courses that introduced me to lesson planning, classroom structure, and educational technology. I learned how to create organized lesson plans, design PowerPoint presentations, and use tools such as Excel to manage information effectively. These skills gave me a foundation, but I knew real growth would come from stepping into an actual classroom.
I was fortunate to gain experience at Canales Elementary School and later at Faulk Middle School. Being inside real classrooms with working students challenged me in ways I had never experienced before. I observed how teachers managed their time, adapted lessons to meet students’ needs, and created supportive learning environments. I also had the opportunity to assist with instruction and interact directly with students. Standing in front of a classroom for the first time was intimidating, but I reminded myself that growth happens outside of comfort zones.
There were moments when lessons did not go exactly as planned or when I felt unsure of myself. However, instead of viewing those moments as failures, I saw them as opportunities to improve. I asked for feedback from mentor teachers, reflected on what worked and what did not, and continued practicing. Over time, my confidence grew. I began to feel more comfortable speaking in front of students, adjusting activities when necessary, and maintaining organization throughout the day. Most importantly, my passion for teaching strengthened. I realized that I genuinely loved working with students and helping them understand new concepts.
Reaching this goal confirmed that education is not just something I am interested in—it is the career I am meant to pursue. The experience taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of preparation. It also showed me that success is not about perfection but about commitment and continuous growth.
Now, I am working toward my next goal: earning my degree in education and becoming a certified elementary school teacher. I plan to continue gaining classroom experience, expanding my knowledge of child development and instructional strategies, and developing inclusive practices that support diverse learners. In the future, I hope to create a classroom environment where students feel safe, valued, and inspired to reach their full potential.
The journey toward my goal has required dedication and courage, but it has also brought clarity and purpose. I am excited to continue growing, learning, and working toward becoming the educator I have always aspired to be.

One of the greatest challenges I have faced in my academic and personal life has been overcoming self-doubt and learning to believe in my ability to pursue higher education and a career in teaching. Being born in Brownsville, Texas and raised in a bilingual border community exposed me to both opportunity and pressure. While I have always had the support of my family, I often placed high expectations on myself and feared not living up to them.
As I began seriously considering a career in education, I felt nervous about whether I was truly capable of becoming a teacher. Teaching is a profession that requires patience, leadership, organization, and confidence—qualities I was still developing. During high school, when I first committed to this path, I questioned whether I would be able to stand in front of a classroom and effectively guide students. The fear of not being “good enough” became one of my biggest internal challenges.
Instead of allowing that fear to hold me back, I decided to face it through preparation and experience. I actively sought opportunities to grow. I was able to gain hands-on classroom experience at Canales Elementary School and later at Faulk Middle School. Being placed in real classroom environments pushed me beyond my comfort zone. I learned how to create structured lesson plans, design engaging presentations, organize materials, and manage my time effectively. More importantly, I learned how to communicate with students, adapt when lessons did not go as planned, and remain patient under pressure.
There were moments when I felt nervous standing in front of students or when a lesson did not go exactly the way I envisioned. However, those moments became turning points for me. I realized that growth does not happen without discomfort. Each challenge strengthened my confidence and reminded me why I chose this path in the first place. My love for working with children continued to grow, and I discovered that teaching was not just a career option—it was truly my calling.
This experience shaped my long-term goals in a meaningful way. It taught me resilience, preparation, and the importance of self-belief. As a future elementary school teacher, I want to create a classroom environment where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and grow. I understand how powerful encouragement can be, and I want to be the kind of educator who helps students overcome their own doubts. I am especially passionate about supporting young learners during their formative years, helping them build both academic skills and confidence.
Receiving this scholarship would greatly support my journey toward becoming an educator. Financial assistance would allow me to focus more fully on my coursework, field experiences, and professional development without the added stress of financial strain. It would provide me with the opportunity to invest more time in gaining classroom experience, attending workshops, and preparing myself to be the best teacher I can be.
The challenges I have faced have taught me perseverance, adaptability, and confidence. They have strengthened my commitment to education and shaped the teacher I aspire to become. With determination, hard work, and the support of this scholarship, I am confident that I will achieve my goals and make a meaningful impact in the lives of my future students.

When I was a little girl, I wanted to do so many things. I felt there were endless possibilities and dreamed of trying everything. One day, my mother suggested that I consider teaching. At first, I was skeptical and unsure, but I decided it would not hurt to try. By the time I reached high school, I officially listed teaching as my intended career, even though I felt nervous about what it would truly be like. During those years, I began developing practical skills such as creating lesson plans, designing PowerPoint presentations, and using Excel. More importantly, I gained early exposure to what it means to prepare and organize effectively as an educator.
For the past year, I had the incredible opportunity to gain classroom experience at Canales Elementary School, and during my senior year, I worked with students at Faulk Middle School. Being inside real classrooms with active, engaged students was a life-changing experience. I observed firsthand the planning, flexibility, patience, and organization it takes to be an effective teacher. These experiences strengthened my confidence and helped me realize that I am capable of rising to the challenges of this profession. While I valued my time working with middle school students, my passion ultimately lies with elementary education. My love for working with children has grown tremendously, and I feel especially drawn to supporting younger learners during their most formative academic years.
What excites me most about pursuing my degree in education is the opportunity to deepen both my theoretical knowledge and practical experience. I am eager to study child development, classroom management, instructional strategies, and inclusive teaching practices that support diverse learners. As a bilingual student who has navigated different cultural and academic environments, I understand the importance of creating classrooms where every child feels seen, respected, and valued.

With perseverance and compassion, I am ready to embark on this journey and dedicate myself fully to uplifting the students who will one day enter my classroom.
Taylor Swift Fan Scholarship
Taylor Swift has always had a remarkable ability to connect with her audience, but one performance that stands out to me as the most moving is her rendition of “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” during the Red (Taylor’s Version) era. While she has countless memorable performances, this one resonated with me deeply because it wasn’t just a song—it was a raw storytelling experience that allowed her to transform personal heartbreak into collective healing.
What makes this performance so powerful is its honesty. The extended version of “All Too Well” is emotionally vulnerable, and hearing Taylor perform it live, with such intensity and conviction, brought the lyrics to life in a way that felt deeply personal for everyone watching. It was less about watching a polished show and more about being invited into her world. The lighting, the stripped-down staging, and the way she poured herself into every word made it feel like a shared emotional journey.
For me, it showed the courage it takes to turn pain into art. Taylor’s willingness to revisit such a personal chapter of her life and present it on stage reminded me that strength doesn’t always come from hiding our struggles, but often from embracing them and sharing them with others. That performance became a testament to resilience and vulnerability—qualities that inspire me not only as a fan, but as someone learning to face challenges in my own life.
Taylor Swift’s career is filled with iconic moments, but “All Too Well” stands out because it captures her greatest gift: her ability to make her audience feel seen, understood, and connected. It is a performance that transcends music and becomes an unforgettable reminder of the power of storytelling.

Ever since middle school, anxiety has made a huge impact on my life. It has been a constant presence, shaping my thoughts, actions, and experiences in ways I never could have imagined as a child. Over the years, it has presented many challenges—some small and manageable, others overwhelming and exhausting.
To me, anxiety is sort of like a roller coaster. There are days when the ride is slow and smooth, when it barely affects me at all, and I can almost forget it exists. But then there are days when the twists and turns are sharp, sudden, and impossible to control. On those days, anxiety grips me tightly, making even the simplest tasks feel like mountains to climb.
Things got much harder when I began experiencing panic attacks. Anxiety attacks are some of the worst moments to endure, especially because you never know when they’re going to happen. There’s no way to truly prepare for them, no warning sign that allows you to take a deep breath before the storm hits. One moment, you’re fine; the next, your chest is tight, your thoughts are racing, and it feels like the walls are closing in. All you can do is try to calm yourself down after it’s over, gathering the strength to keep moving forward.
In those moments, having support makes a world of difference. I am incredibly lucky to have my boyfriend by my side. He knows how to help me ground myself, how to remind me that I am safe, and how to bring me back to a calmer state faster than I could on my own. I honestly don’t know what I would do without him. His presence has taught me that love and patience are powerful tools in coping with mental health challenges.
Still, I do my best not to let my anxiety control my life. I don’t want it to define me or limit my future. Every day, I work on finding ways to manage it—whether that’s through breathing techniques, mindfulness, or simply reminding myself that I am stronger than my fears. It’s not an easy process, but I am determined to overcome it so it doesn’t hold me back anymore.
One of the most important ways I am pushing forward is by pursuing a college degree. Education is more than just a path to a career for me—it’s a statement to myself that I can rise above my struggles and achieve my goals. College represents opportunity, independence, and growth. I know it will challenge me academically and personally, but I also know that every challenge I’ve faced with anxiety has prepared me to handle the obstacles ahead.
My journey with anxiety has been far from easy, but it has shaped me into someone resilient and determined. It has taught me the value of support, the importance of perseverance, and the strength that comes from refusing to give up. I am still on the road to fully overcoming it, but I am confident that with the right mindset, hard work, and continued support from the people I love, I will succeed—not just in managing my anxiety, but in building the life I’ve always dreamed of.
This Woman's Worth Inc. Scholarship
I've always been drawn to assisting others in their educational journey. Something about helping others inspired me, whether it was reading stories to younger children or helping a classmate with a math problem. That spark has developed into a distinct and fervent dream as I've matured: teaching elementary school. And I think I am worthy of this aspiration because I have the passion, commitment, and motivation to become the kind of teacher who truly makes a difference—not because I already have all the answers.
Teaching elementary school is a calling, not simply a job. It calls for endurance, compassion, inventiveness, and patience. Even though I'm still working on them, I already possess these traits. I genuinely care about other people's welfare, especially that of children. My goal is to establish a secure and happy learning atmosphere where each kid feels appreciated, encouraged, and motivated. My motivation comes from that sense of purpose, even in the face of difficulty.
I am aware that being a teacher won't always be simple. There will be challenging days, hard hours, and moments when I doubt myself. However, I've discovered that perseverance leads to growth. I'm not easily discouraged. I don't give up when I encounter difficulties; instead, I search for answers. I pose inquiries. I think and make adjustments. I'll need this mentality in the classroom, where there are always surprises and chances to adjust.
Because I genuinely recognize the influence a teacher may have, I also think I deserve this desire. Teachers who made me feel capable, appreciated, and eager to learn are still in my memory. They molded me into the person I am now, not merely imparted knowledge. That's the kind of teacher I want to be for my future pupils. Regardless of their struggles or past, I want to be someone who supports them, listens to them, and believes in them.
Status and recognition are not what motivate me to pursue my passion. It is motivated by love—love for education, for development, and for kids. You can't fake that type of love. It manifests in my preparation, how I envision my future classroom, and how I assist others. I make an effort every day to live up to the qualities of a great teacher: kindness, patience, curiosity, and faith in one's own abilities.
So, am I deserving of the dream I want to realize? Indeed. Because I'm dedicated to the process and I'm not waiting to be flawless. I'm prepared to put in a lot of effort, have an open mind, and continue to show up with my whole heart. I am aware that my dream is important to the future students whose lives I wish to influence as well as to me. And I'm confident that this desire is worthwhile for them and the person I'm growing into. I am, too.

When I was a little girl, I wanted to do so many things. I felt there were so many options to choose from. I wanted to try everything. Then, my mother suggested that I should try teaching. I was a little skeptical at first, but I thought it would not hurt to try. When it came to high school, I put my career as a teacher, scared and nervous about what it would be like. I learned how to make lesson plans, Powerpoints, and how to use excel. For the past year, I have been able to go to Canales Elementary School and for my senior year, I went to Faulk Middle School. It has truly been a huge advantage to be able to go to these schools. I got to go to these schools and learn about how it feels to be inside a real classroom with working students. I have learned all the planning and organization skills it takes to be a great teacher. I believe I will be able to aspire to these challenges and be the teacher I've wanted to be. Since being able to go to these schools, my love for kids has grown so much bigger. Even though I've been with middle scholars for a while now, I would love to teach elementary kids instead. Elementary kids are so much more curious about the world. They always want to ask questions and know about everything. I have figured out I want to be these kids' teachers. I want to be there for them and answer all their questions, no matter what they could be. I want them to feel comfortable to tell me anything. I want them to feel they can trust me with anything because they can. I would love to be an elementary school teacher. I want to be the one who teaches kids things about the world they don't know yet. I want to show them that they can change the world no matter what anyone tells them.
As I look ahead to my future as an elementary school teacher, I am filled with excitement and anticipation. The thought of shaping young minds, fostering curiosity, and instilling a love for learning brings me immense joy. Each day in the classroom will be a new opportunity to make a positive impact on my students' lives, to inspire them to reach for their dreams, and to believe in their own potential.
In conclusion, I am committed to providing a nurturing and supportive environment for my future students, where they feel safe to explore, question, and grow. I want to be the teacher who not only imparts knowledge but also instills confidence and resilience in each child. I want to be a source of encouragement, guidance, and inspiration for all the young minds that enter my classroom. I am excited about the journey ahead and the lives I will touch as an elementary school teacher. I am ready to embrace the challenges, celebrate the successes, and be the teacher that many kids will remember forever.
