Since the day I was born, I have been referred to as the miracle baby. The circumstances surrounding my birth were scary for my parents; there was a slim chance that I would even survive. Experiencing cardiac arrest multiple times, my parents decided that a PDA (an opening to the major blood vessels of the heart) ligation surgery was necessary to fix my heart. My parents rushed to find a priest that would baptize me right in the NICU. Without the prayers and support my family received, I would not have had this second chance at life. I was born a fighter with a tenacious spirit.
Over the years, I was told that everything happens for a reason. I remembered this sentiment, but I never had a moment that made me pause to reflect on it. Because of my chronic illness and pain, I could not go to every single mass and CCD class. I was told that I could not be confirmed at my current church and had to go elsewhere. My best friend invited me into her church, and I fit right in. Going through the confirmation process, I got very close with my new priest. Ironically, the priest who confirmed me was the one who performed my emergency baptism 17 years ago; I now firmly believe that everything happens for a reason. This story resonates with me every day because if I can find my way back to the priest that baptized me, I can accomplish my dreams. That moment helped me to truly understand who I want to be. People say that you find out who you are by the end of high school, and I never thought that was more than a cliche.
With a second chance at life, I want to help those who are in need. With renewed strength and determination, I have grown through the challenging moments in my life. I am thankful for my new outlook on life. I am grateful for the privilege of being able to go to school and learn and experience the things that make life so great. In healthcare, the goal is to help everyone regardless of ethnicity, financials, religious beliefs, etc. There is no judgment because we are all human, and need help at some point in our lives. I am appreciative of the help that was given to me when I needed help.
Ever since I could remember, I have always wanted to be a nurse. I am inspired to help people who can’t help themselves. There is a demand for nurses, and the field should have people that are eager to help people. There are endless opportunities in the nursing field and I know that I will positively impact those in my community. There is no greater feeling than the one I get when I ease someone's pain. People from every walk of life deserve to be healthy, and I know that I will encourage diversity.
