Salutations! My name is Julia Savino, a sophmore at The University of Notre Dame, and thank you for visiting my Bold Profile!
Bold is an interesting word when you are born with "Bold" circumstances. I am a triplet with a sister, and my brother Joseph has autism. Seeing Joseph struggle with tasks that we take for granted has highlighted that small, kind acts can significantly change the meaning of a moment and make a difference in someone's ordinary day. Making others happy and feel loved is something I strive to do every day and continue to do in my future. I wish to one-day study autism and find answers to questions we can not yet grasp and find clarity for parents who want their children's best. Not only do I wish to study autism, but I hope that I can use my voice to amplify the voices of others who are neurodiverse, just like my brother.
I find myself continually reading science articles and educating myself about issues that I can hopefully one day resolve through research-some of which I have already begun answering in my high school research class. I consider myself a very neuroscience geek, but, honestly, I am just an all-around science lover that is always pondering and thinking. :)

At 3:30 AM, my brother begins his day: he goes downstairs with sluggish movements, puffy eye bags, and stiff arms. Eventually, he perks up, and from upstairs, I can hear his humming, clapping, and the silly voices he makes. Many things he experiences are out of his control, and I can only do so much. What if I could do something more? Viewing this as a rhetorical question, simply put, is not enough.
Joseph was diagnosed with autism at age two and had been taking medications to help regulate his behaviors. His behaviors do not ease as much as the medicines claim. Some of his behaviors include stimming, seizures, and quick spikes in his anxiety that are onset by the simplest things. With over thirteen various pills, I began to question if they all worked.
Many families of autistic children struggle to find medications. As every child is so different, parents pin their faith in doctors and psychiatrists, praying that something will work. Through volunteering with numerous organizations focused on helping those with special needs, I have observed how different, yet similar many of these children are. Fixations, repetitive behaviors, and giant imaginations are just some of the similarities, but the spectrum of each differs per individual. There must be some underlying connection, and I am determined to contribute to the field of Autism Studies in one way or another.
Like any other college student, I have career aspirations, but my brother’s life is what gave me a passion for finding solutions that could one day better help kids like him. My dream career is to go into the field of Neurology and computing intertwined and use medications to highlight what parts of the brain function are neurodiverse. By creating a neural network of medications and their reported rates of usefulness from autistic individuals around the country, we can work backward at what causes autism and what about it makes it a spectrum. Through research in high school relating to the brain, I hope to continue some of my findings at University and discover new ones. One day, I will provide the much-needed clarity for parents about the effects of the medications they are giving their children quite blindly and transparency for the individual’s wellbeing.
My brother has inspired me not just to walk the path of curiosity but to create my own paths. Yes, he lives a different experience than any of us, but his differences make living life more beautiful because how he lives is one of the most beautiful things. Despite his challenges, I have never met someone with a big imagination like Joseph. He dreams one day he will help at Disney World, creating new attractions and bringing together those from around the globe. Yes, one of my aspirations is to learn the science behind autism, but I also want to keep working hands-on with Autistic individuals. To be the person to put a smile on someone else’s face is irreplaceable, and something my brother has shown me.
His big dreams make me believe that I can do anything too, and put life in the perspective that I must live it to the fullest for both myself and my brother.
