While being a full-time student, I was also a part-time electrical engineer and struggling future nurse. My long homework sessions did not end when I finished what I was assigned by my teachers, rather when I was finished helping my father compose his emails to his co-workers and when I finished a daily two-hour NCLEX study session with my mother. As a Filipino, I was taught that it is a non-negotiable to always be of service to people, especially your family. As an American, I was taught to "never stop moving, work hard, and always take on every opportunity" and I became a "workaholic" obsessed with self-improvement. Through being exposed to the two different cultures daily, I have discovered that my objective in life is to persistently serve as many communities as possible in all my endeavors. Through founding the Philippine United Student Organization chapter in my high school, I serve my Filipino community through service events with other young Filipinos in San Bernardino County. I also discovered a community in my identity as an American as President of the Junior State of America. As we review ongoing political events and current world problems and participate in local government events, I am reminded of the great opportunity of immigrating to this country. Both leadership positions have volunteer opportunities assisting low-income families with Visa petitions and DACA application services. Even when expressing my creative side, I constantly make an effort to passively serve others. What started as pretending to be famous YouTubers with my siblings using our iPads became a skill set that could be of value to the people around me. At school, I produced weekly news report videos for the entire student body to be updated on all announcements. During the pandemic, I found the perfect opportunity to serve my community through my video production skills. With my church’s inability to have in-person masses, I stepped in to provide my ministry with online church services through videos containing sermons and worship segments. The “American dream” that I once defined as a measure of academic achievement has evolved to my "Filipino-American dream" as a term I use to motivate myself to make an impact on every environment I am a part of.
