I have always been drawn to problem-solving, patterns, and the intricate workings of systems, which naturally led me to pursue a degree in data science. My interest in the sciences started early, as I often found myself fascinated by how data could reveal hidden truths or lead to better decision-making. Whether it was understanding complex puzzles or observing patterns in everyday life, I was constantly intrigued by how the world operated beneath the surface. However, it wasn’t until later in life, after working through personal challenges and responsibilities, that I realized I could turn this passion into a career. Coming from a family without a history of higher education, my path to becoming a scientist has been unconventional. I enrolled in college seven years after graduating high school, balancing my studies with the responsibilities of raising my children and maintaining financial independence. This journey, while challenging, has made me more determined to succeed in the field of data science. I chose this path because it merges my love for problem-solving with the practical applications of technology and data analysis, allowing me to contribute to sectors that matter, such as healthcare, finance, or technology. My career goals are to first work as a data analyst and eventually become a data scientist, with a focus on applying data-driven insights to real-world problems. I am particularly passionate about using data to drive positive change, whether that’s optimizing healthcare systems, improving business strategies, or helping organizations make more informed decisions. After completing my degree in data science, I also plan to pursue an MBA to expand my understanding of business operations and leadership, which will enable me to work on a broader scale in the decision-making process. Receiving this scholarship would be transformative for my educational journey. As a non-traditional student who is financially independent and balancing the demands of family and school, the financial support would alleviate some of the pressure that comes with pursuing higher education. It would allow me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial strain that often accompanies education, especially for someone in my situation. More importantly, the scholarship would bring me one step closer to my dream of becoming a data scientist, providing the resources I need to complete my degree and advance to the next stage of my career. Beyond the financial support, receiving this scholarship would be a validation of the hard work and perseverance I’ve put into my academic and personal life. It would serve as a reminder that, despite the obstacles I’ve faced, I am capable of achieving my goals and contributing to the scientific community in a meaningful way. By helping to reduce the financial burden of my education, this scholarship would allow me to fully immerse myself in my studies, gain the skills and knowledge needed for my career, and ultimately set an example for my children that anything is possible with determination and support. In conclusion, my passion for the sciences, particularly data science, is rooted in a lifelong curiosity about how systems work and how information can be used to solve complex problems. My career goals are centered on using data-driven insights to make a tangible difference in the world, and this scholarship would be instrumental in helping me achieve those goals. It would not only provide the financial resources I need but also further motivate me to continue striving for success in my educational and professional journey.
Dr. Christine Lawther First in the Family Scholarship
Being the first in my family to obtain a college degree is a milestone that carries deep personal significance. It represents not only my own hard work and determination but also the breaking of a cycle. Coming from a background where higher education was not a given, my pursuit of a degree is about opening doors that have historically been closed. I see it as an opportunity to set a new standard for my family, especially for my children. I want them to grow up knowing that education is achievable, no matter the obstacles. This achievement also feels like a testament to my resilience. Growing up in poverty in a family of Holocaust survivors, and being a teen parent, I’ve had to overcome a lot; and earning a degree is a symbol of triumph over those adversities. I’m currently pursuing a degree in data science. My passion for problem-solving, puzzles, and pattern recognition led me to this field, as it aligns perfectly with my strengths and interests. Data science allows me to explore how vast amounts of information can be transformed into meaningful insights, helping to drive decision-making in various industries. I am particularly excited about the versatility of this field, as it opens up opportunities in many sectors like healthcare, finance, and technology. The combination of technical skills like coding and analysis with critical thinking and creativity makes data science the ideal choice for me. It also offers a pathway to stability and growth, which are important to me as I look toward the future. In terms of long-term goals, my primary focus is on building a successful career as a data analyst, with the eventual aim of becoming a data scientist. After completing my degree in data science, I plan to pursue an MBA to further enhance my business acumen, which will allow me to not only work with data but also contribute to strategic decision-making at a higher level within an organization. Over the next five years, I hope to gain enough experience in the field to take on leadership roles where I can mentor others and contribute to meaningful projects. Beyond my professional aspirations, my long-term goal is to provide a stable and fulfilling life for my children. I want them to see that nothing is impossible, and I hope my journey will inspire them to pursue their own dreams with confidence and perseverance. Ultimately, I view my educational journey as not just a path to personal success but as a legacy I’m building for my family—one that prioritizes education, resilience, and the belief that anything can be achieved with hard work.
    Robert Lawyer Memorial Scholarship
Being a non-traditional student has had a profound impact on my educational experience. Enrolling in college seven years after graduating from high school, while managing three children and maintaining financial independence, has brought challenges and rewards that have shaped my academic journey in ways I hadn’t anticipated. The first significant impact is the balance I’ve had to maintain between my family responsibilities and academic commitments. As a mother of three, including two children who are on the autism spectrum, my time and energy are often stretched. This has taught me to manage my time more effectively, prioritize tasks, and stay organized in ways that I might not have needed to as a traditional student. Online education has been essential in making this balance feasible, providing me with the flexibility to complete assignments on my own schedule and still be present for my children. However, this also means that I must be self-disciplined and stay motivated without the immediate structure that in-person classes provide. Returning to school after a seven-year gap has allowed me to bring a different perspective to my education. I am more focused and determined than I might have been as a younger student. My life experiences, such as navigating financial independence and overcoming the challenges of being a teen mom, have made me more resilient and resourceful. I’ve learned to leverage these experiences in my studies, especially in a field like data science, where problem-solving and critical thinking are essential. The challenges I’ve faced have made me adaptable and open to learning new skills, knowing that education is the key to unlocking better opportunities for myself and my family. This non-traditional path has also impacted my future goals. My decision to pursue a career in data science, and later an MBA, is rooted in my desire to provide stability and success for my family. While traditional students might focus on exploration and discovery, my goals are more targeted. I’m driven by a clear vision of what I want to achieve—securing a career as a data analyst and, eventually, becoming a data scientist. The experiences of juggling family life, work, and school have given me the confidence that I can handle the demands of these career paths. I’m also motivated by the example I want to set for my children, showing them that, despite challenges, persistence and hard work can lead to success. Being a non-traditional student has provided me with unique strengths. The ability to balance multiple responsibilities while remaining focused on long-term goals has made my educational journey both demanding and rewarding. It has shaped my approach to learning, reinforced my resilience, and deepened my commitment to achieving my future aspirations.
