Bick First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation college student means creating a path that no one in my immediate family has taken before. I have had to learn how to navigate college applications, financial aid, course planning, and career decisions largely on my own. Although that can be challenging, it has also made me more independent and motivated to make the most of every opportunity I receive. Being the first in my family to attend college gives me a strong sense of responsibility because I know that my journey can help create opportunities for the generations that come after me. My journey has not always been easy. During middle school, my father went to jail, which created a difficult period for my family and changed how I viewed my future. Experiencing that at a young age taught me that I cannot control every circumstance in life, but I can control how I respond. Instead of allowing that experience to define me, I have used it as motivation to work toward a stable and successful future for myself and my family. Education has become a major part of that goal. Throughout high school, I challenged myself through Advanced Placement courses and exams while also completing college-level mathematics courses. These experiences taught me the importance of discipline, persistence, and continuing to work even when something is difficult. My interest in mathematics and problem-solving eventually led me toward civil engineering. I will be attending the University of California, Irvine to pursue a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. My goal is to become a civil engineer, gain experience in structural engineering and construction, and eventually combine engineering with business and entrepreneurship. In the future, I hope to lead major projects, build a company, and create opportunities for others. I want my career to be about more than personal success; I want to create something meaningful that benefits my family and community. What drives me most is my family and the future I want to create. I want my education to help me provide stability for my family and make them proud. I also hope that becoming the first in my family to earn a college degree will show younger members of my family that higher education is possible for them too. I want my success to become an example that encourages others in my family to pursue goals that may once have seemed out of reach. This scholarship would help reduce the financial burden of earning my degree and allow me to focus more on my education and professional development. It could help cover tuition, books, transportation, and other college expenses while allowing me to take advantage of opportunities such as internships and engineering organizations. Being first can be intimidating, but I am proud to be creating a path that my family has never walked before. I may not know exactly where every step will lead, but I know I am willing to work for the future I want.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My long-term goal is to become a successful civil engineer specializing in structural engineering and eventually become a leader and entrepreneur within the construction and infrastructure industry. I want to build more than a career for myself. I want to develop the knowledge, experience, and leadership skills necessary to eventually lead projects, build a company, and create opportunities for others. To accomplish this, I know I need more than ambition. I need a detailed plan and the discipline to follow it. My first step is earning my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. During college, my priority will be building a strong technical foundation in mathematics, physics, mechanics, structures, and other engineering subjects. I also plan to develop skills outside the classroom through engineering organizations, internships, and projects. I want to join organizations such as ASCE and seek internships or part-time engineering roles to better understand how concepts from my classes are applied in real construction and engineering projects. I plan to use my undergraduate years in stages. During my first year, I will focus on adjusting to university-level engineering coursework and maintaining strong academic performance. In my second and third years, I plan to pursue internships, develop professional connections, and gain experience with engineering software and project work. By my later undergraduate years, I want to have meaningful industry experience and a clearer understanding of which area of structural engineering best fits my interests. I also plan to pursue the Fundamentals of Engineering exam after developing the necessary academic foundation and work toward becoming an Engineer-in-Training. After graduation, I plan to work as a civil or structural engineer and gain the professional experience necessary to eventually pursue a Professional Engineer license. Working in the industry will allow me to learn from experienced engineers, understand project management, communicate with contractors and clients, and develop an understanding of the business side of construction. I believe this experience will be essential before attempting to start a company of my own. Financial planning is also an important part of my path. My largest expenses will be tuition, housing, transportation, books, and other educational costs. I plan to reduce these costs through scholarships, financial aid, careful budgeting, and employment when my academic schedule allows. I will prioritize spending on necessities and educational resources while avoiding unnecessary debt. Scholarships such as this one would directly reduce the amount I need to cover and allow me to put more of my resources toward my education and professional development. I also understand that my first plan may not work exactly as expected. If I cannot obtain an engineering internship immediately, I will pursue related construction, surveying, CAD, or technical positions to gain relevant experience. If my preferred structural engineering path changes, my civil engineering degree will still provide opportunities in areas such as transportation, water resources, construction, and other infrastructure fields. My goal is not to follow one path blindly, but to remain focused on the destination while adapting when circumstances change. I want to follow the principle behind Joe Gilroy’s motto: “Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan.” I have ambitious goals, but I understand that they will only become reality through consistent action. By combining education, experience, financial planning, professional development, and perseverance, I plan to turn my interest in engineering into a career that creates lasting value for my family and my community.
Emerging Leaders in STEM Scholarship
I chose to pursue civil engineering because I want to use STEM to solve problems that affect people’s everyday lives. I have always been interested in how things are designed, constructed, and connected, and civil engineering allows me to turn that interest into something meaningful. Roads, bridges, buildings, and other infrastructure are essential to communities, yet much of the work behind them happens without people noticing. I want to be part of the people who design and build the infrastructure that communities depend on. My interest in civil engineering has also been influenced by my family. Several of my uncles work in construction, and seeing their dedication gave me an appreciation for the effort involved in creating physical structures and improving communities. Their work helped me realize that I wanted to learn the engineering and technical knowledge behind construction. I became especially interested in how mathematics and science can be applied to real-world problems and used to create solutions that are safe, efficient, and lasting. My education has prepared me to take on the challenges of a STEM career. Throughout high school, I challenged myself through Advanced Placement courses and exams and also completed college-level mathematics courses. These experiences strengthened my problem-solving skills and taught me that difficult subjects require patience, discipline, and persistence. I know civil engineering will challenge me, but I am excited by that challenge because I want to continue developing the skills necessary to solve increasingly complex problems. My long-term goal is to become a civil engineer and eventually combine engineering with business, leadership, and entrepreneurship. I want to contribute to major infrastructure projects while learning how projects are managed and how engineering companies operate. Eventually, I hope to lead projects and build organizations that create innovative solutions and opportunities for others. I want my career to have an impact beyond my own success by helping improve the communities where people live and work. I also hope to inspire other students from backgrounds like mine to recognize that STEM careers are within their reach. Getting to this point has not always been easy. During middle school, my father went to jail, which created a difficult period for my family. Experiencing that at a young age changed how I thought about responsibility and my future. It taught me that I cannot control every circumstance in life, but I can control the effort I put into creating my future. Rather than allowing that experience to hold me back, I have used it as motivation to stay focused on my education and work toward becoming the person I want to be. Being a first-generation college student has also meant learning how to navigate higher education without having a parent who has gone through the same process. I have had to take initiative in researching colleges, understanding requirements, planning my education, and preparing for an engineering career. These experiences have made me more independent, determined, and willing to seek solutions when I do not immediately know the answer. STEM allows me to turn challenges into motivation and knowledge into action. Through civil engineering, I hope to build infrastructure, create opportunities, and contribute to solutions that will benefit people for generations. I am excited to continue my education at UC Irvine and use what I learn to make a meaningful difference in the world.

Learner Calculus Scholarship
Calculus is often viewed as one of the most challenging areas of mathematics, but its difficulty is also what makes it one of the most valuable tools in STEM. Rather than being just another requirement in an academic curriculum, calculus provides a way to understand change, predict outcomes, and solve problems that impact the real world. For students pursuing STEM careers, calculus develops the critical thinking and analytical skills necessary to turn ideas into practical solutions. As a future civil engineer, I see calculus as an essential foundation for understanding how structures, systems, and environments behave. Civil engineering is built around analyzing forces, materials, movement, and change over time. Whether designing a bridge that must support different loads, studying how water flows through a system, or planning transportation networks, engineers rely on mathematical models to make informed decisions. Calculus allows engineers to understand these complex relationships and create designs that are safe, efficient, and reliable. Without calculus, many of the structures and technologies people rely on every day would not be possible. One of the most important concepts calculus teaches is how to analyze change. In the real world, almost nothing remains constant. Buildings experience changing forces, traffic patterns shift throughout the day, and environmental conditions vary over time. Through concepts such as derivatives and integrals, calculus gives STEM professionals the ability to measure rates of change and calculate accumulated effects. These skills allow engineers and scientists to predict problems, improve designs, and create solutions that benefit society. By understanding how systems change, STEM professionals can make better decisions and develop innovations that are more effective and sustainable. Beyond its practical applications, calculus also teaches a mindset that is valuable in STEM fields. Learning calculus requires patience, persistence, and the ability to approach difficult problems from different perspectives. When students work through challenging equations, they learn that complex problems can be solved through careful analysis and determination. These skills extend beyond mathematics and prepare students to handle the challenges they will face in research, engineering, technology, and innovation. My own experience with advanced mathematics has shown me the importance of developing these skills. Through completing college-level mathematics courses, including Math 101A, 101B, and 101C, I have learned the value of persistence and problem-solving. These courses have strengthened my analytical abilities and prepared me for the challenges of pursuing civil engineering. Calculus is not only a subject I have studied; it is a tool that will help me approach real-world problems throughout my career and develop solutions that create lasting impacts. STEM fields continue to shape the future by addressing some of the world’s greatest challenges, from creating sustainable infrastructure to developing new technologies. Calculus plays a major role in this progress because it allows innovators to understand systems, improve efficiency, and design solutions based on evidence and analysis. The ability to use mathematics to understand the world is what allows engineers and scientists to transform ideas into reality. As I continue my education in civil engineering, I hope to use the knowledge and skills gained from calculus to contribute to meaningful projects that improve communities. I want to apply what I learn to create infrastructure that is safer, more efficient, and beneficial for future generations. While calculus may be challenging, that challenge is what makes it valuable. It teaches students how to think critically, adapt to difficult situations, and develop solutions that can change the world. For me, calculus represents more than mathematics. It represents the foundation that allows STEM students to transform ideas into reality and create a better future through innovation, creativity, and problem-solving.
STEAM Generator Scholarship
As a first-generation college student and the child of immigrants, pursuing higher education represents both an opportunity and a responsibility. College is not simply the next step after high school for me. It is a path into an unfamiliar system, one that my family has not had the opportunity to navigate in the same way. While this has created uncertainty, it has also strengthened my independence, ambition, and determination to build a future that expands the possibilities available to my family. One of my greatest hopes for college is to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become a civil engineer and create meaningful improvements in the communities around me. I am interested in engineering because it combines mathematics, creativity, and practical problem-solving. Roads, bridges, buildings, and other forms of infrastructure shape how people live and connect. I hope to contribute to projects that make communities safer, more efficient, and better prepared for the future. At the same time, entering higher education as an outsider to the system comes with concerns. Because my family does not have the same experience with college, I have had to learn many parts of the process independently. Understanding applications, financial aid, course planning, academic expectations, and professional opportunities has required me to ask questions, research resources, and take initiative. There are moments when the unfamiliarity of the college system makes the path feel uncertain, especially when I compare my experience with that of students whose family members can guide them through every step. However, being a first-generation student has also taught me valuable skills. I have learned to be resourceful, seek guidance when I need it, and take responsibility for my own progress. Rather than viewing my background only as a disadvantage, I see it as a source of motivation. Every academic milestone I reach represents not only personal growth but also the possibility of creating a new example for my family. My family’s experiences have shaped my understanding of education and opportunity. Their sacrifices have made it possible for me to pursue goals that may not have been available to previous generations. This motivates me to take my education seriously and make the most of the opportunities I receive. I want to honor their efforts by building a career that provides stability for my family and allows me to give back to the communities that have supported me. My future goals extend beyond earning a degree. I hope to combine civil engineering with innovation, leadership, and business to eventually lead major projects and create opportunities for others. I want to contribute to infrastructure that improves communities while also helping future students see that higher education is possible, even when they are the first in their family to pursue it. My concerns about college are balanced by my belief in what education can make possible. I know that the path may require me to learn unfamiliar systems, manage financial pressures, and overcome challenges without the same guidance available to some of my peers. Still, those challenges have strengthened my drive rather than diminished it. By pursuing higher education, I hope to create a future that is not limited by what my family has experienced before. I want my degree to become a foundation for meaningful work, financial stability, and future opportunities for my family and community. As a first-generation student, I am not only entering a new educational space; I am helping create a path that others can follow.
