My Caribbean heritage is the foundation of my identity. Being Jamaican and Haitian means more than simply representing two countries, it means carrying forward the legacy of strength, survival, and resilience. It means knowing where I come from, understanding the sacrifices made by my ancestors, and honoring the cultures that shaped me. Both nations carry histories of struggle and triumph, of rebellion against oppression, of perseverance through poverty, and of pride in language, food, music, and community. That spirit lives within me, and it’s what fuels my ambition. Growing up in a predominantly white town in Connecticut, I often felt the weight of standing out. At times, it was isolating. But instead of seeing it as a setback, I’ve learned to see it as a source of strength. My heritage has made me confident in who I am. I speak with pride about the rhythms of reggae, the warmth of our hospitality, and the flavor of our food. My roots remind me that I am part of something greater, a lineage of people who have always found a way to rise, no matter the circumstance. This cultural pride is closely tied to my motivation for attending college. As a first-generation college student, pursuing higher education is about breaking generational barriers and building a legacy. I’ve watched my mother work long hours to provide for me. I’ve seen family members sacrifice dreams for survival. College isn’t just a personal goal—it’s a promise I’m making to my family and to my heritage. It’s my way of saying, “Your sacrifices weren’t in vain", to my mother and my father. Education, for me, represents freedom. It’s the freedom to choose a path for myself, to explore the world beyond what I’ve known, and to impact others. I understand that knowledge is power so, I want to study business not just to find success, but to create opportunities for others, especially those from underrepresented communities. I dream of starting businesses that empower young people like me, who might not always see reflections of themselves in positions of leadership, but who have the passion and intelligence to succeed. College is also where I hope to find a community of learners who challenge me and inspire me. I want to share my story, learn from others, and grow both intellectually and emotionally. I’m passionate about continuing to advocate for justice, equity, and representation—just as my ancestors did in their own ways. Finally, my Caribbean heritage and my drive to attend college are deeply connected. One is my past, filled with rich culture and perseverance. The other is my future, filled with possibility and purpose. And I stand in the middle, ready to carry the torch forward.
