A very fond memory I hold dear is from 2018, when my older brother graduated from the United States Marine Corps. I was still in junior high, and I had not experienced much in the world of traveling, or of the military. Daniel, is his name. He was graduating in August. Our family is a large family, and we could only afford to drive to Camp Pendleton, California, from Montana, instead of flying. We arrived and got to stay on base, which was an exciting experience. I remember the first time I saw Daniel, I almost did not recognize him. He was bald, extremely fit, and tan. He marched through the base with his platoon, and when they got to the middle of the grounds, they preformed a few drills. I was so proud my heart could not handle it. After his graduation, he took us around the base, showing us his home for the past few months. There were so many of us siblings there that I had to wait my turn to ask my questions. In between asking questions, I soaked up the stories of the miles they had marched and the intensity of training. We had many laughs and a few tears throughout that day. That was the beginning of Daniel's Marine Corps journey. As years have passed, I have heard many more stories and have watched him get deployed in Korea, Afghanistan, and many other countries, doing his duty. He inspired three of my brothers join other branches of the military. When he got out of the Marines in 2024, he had a disability from the hard miles he had put on through the military. He then got married and started college. He is working toward his goal of a degree in Social Work and helping other veterans overcome injuries like the one he overcame. I am so proud of him, and know that he will continue to help other veterans and inspire many others he comes in contact with throughout his journey. As I have been learning about college and trying to find ways that I can afford to get my degree, Daniel has been the most supportive and helpful in my journey. He has spent hours on the phone and has done much research with me. He has helped me find what degree would be most fitting and discover ways to make my dream of becoming a teacher come true. I am very proud and grateful for Daniel, and know that he is an incredible sample of the military, in addition to being a very driven and inspiring example to those around him.
