I've always had a deep connection to creativity, not just as a skill, but as a part of who I am. Ever since I was young, I've seen the world through a creative lens. From doodles in notebooks to school projects where I could build, draw, or invent. Creativity came naturally to me; it wasn't just a hobby; it was how I thought, how I felt, and how I made sense of the world. Even something as simple as noticing the colors in a sunset felt like a form of art. Creativity is how I understand life, and that perspective shows up in everything I do, especially in the way I create. That sense of curiosity and expression grew into music and photography. I'm a self-taught musician, having learned piano, guitar by ear, instinct, and YouTube videos. Music became my emotional outlet, a space where I could process feelings, build confidence, and express what words often couldn't. Photography followed a similar path. I found myself drawn to peaceful, nostalgic moments in nature, sunsets, birds, and anything that brought me comfort or calm. Editing those photos allowed me to shape those feelings visually. Through that process, I discovered something even deeper: the power of design. I began to see how color, composition, and storytelling could come together to create work that not only looked good but meant something. When I found graphic design, it felt like everything I loved had come together. I realized I could turn emotions, ideas, and stories into something visual and impactful, something that communicates, empowers, and supports others. That's why I want to pursue graphic design as a career. To me, it's not just about the aesthetics; it's about creating work that speaks to people on a deeper level. What inspires me most are emotions, the feelings that shape who we are and how we connect. Through design, I want to help people express what they feel, but can't always say. I want to design with purpose, branding that gives a small business owner confidence in their dream, visuals that support mental health or equality, or educational tools that make information more inclusive and accessible. Design has the power to influence, to uplift, and to unite, and I want to be part of that change. In my community and beyond, I aim to make a positive impact by utilizing creativity to uplift others. I want to work with individuals and organizations that are trying to make a difference, and provide them with visuals that convey their message with heart. I want to create designs that not only look beautiful, but do something good: tell a powerful story, bring awareness to important causes, or simply brighten someone's day. Through my work, I hope to bring smiles, clarity, and comfort into people's lives. I want to see their ideas flourish and know that I helped them get there, not just through skill, but through care. I'm still growing, learning, and building my path, but I'm doing it with purpose. For me, design is more than a career. It's my way of giving back to the world that's given me so much to feel.
Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
Hearing Jack Terry’s story is truly inspiring, showcasing how nothing is impossible to achieve. His journey reminded me that when you set your mind to something, no matter how difficult or obstacle-ridden it may seem, it is within reach. Jack Terry’s perseverance is a testament to this, and his story resonated with me deeply. It reminded me of the struggles I faced growing up, determined to succeed. My parents have always worked hard, hoping to provide me with a better life filled with opportunities, and I have certainly embraced them. From a young age, I sensed that my mindset differed from many of my peers. This difference, unfortunately, made me a target for bullying. However, I never allowed their words to bring me down. If anything, I used it as motivation to prove them wrong. The true challenge came when I entered high school. High school made me question not only my abilities but also my purpose. Freshman year began, and I found myself struggling with my mental health. Anxiety took hold, largely due to the immense pressure I placed on myself. It became overwhelming, and I often felt defeated. But despite everything, I refused to give up. Though many doors were slammed in my face when I sought help, I kept pushing forward. The struggles with my mental health caused shifts in how people treated me and what they thought of me. I could sense that many didn't believe in me. This was deeply disappointing, especially because all I wanted was to pursue my education. Due to all this chaos, I made the bold decision to change schools. I refused to let others hinder my dreams and goals. The moment I made the switch, the difference was immediate. My new school helped me rediscover myself, my joy, and my passion. It was there how I discovered graphic design and recognized my creative abilities. They supported me in honing these skills, and it became clear that this was the path I was meant to follow. It wasn’t easy, but my high school years taught me invaluable lessons. The first lesson was empathy, understanding that everyone is fighting their own battles. Knowing this, I realized how important it is to be kind because kindness costs nothing but can mean everything to someone in need. The second lesson I learned was that no matter the circumstances, it's never impossible to achieve one's goals. Dealing with mental health struggles showed me that it doesn’t define who I am, nor does it prevent me from succeeding. People may say many things, often because they don’t understand your journey as you do, but their words don’t hold power unless you let them. All in all, I am incredibly grateful for every moment I experienced during these past four years of high school. Whether they were painful or joyous, each moment taught me valuable lessons and helped shape me into the person I am today. Thanks to the risks I took in embracing change, I was able to discover my passion for graphic design, which is the field I will be majoring in. I look forward to expanding my knowledge and creativity, and I’m excited to share my projects with the world. Art has the power to inspire, to open minds, and to shift perspectives. As many people are visual learners, I hope to use my graphic design skills to help others discover new ideas, spark their curiosity, and change how they see the world.
