Abran Arreola-Hernandez Latino Scholarship
One important experience that happened in my life was my wrestling finals. After I lost my final match to get 1st place, I was really upset with myself because I didn't win. My point of view was you have to win and that if you lose it will bring disappointment to your family. I was only viewing one side but my mother however changed my perspective. She told me "That it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, what matters is that you tried and gave it your all." From that point forward I changed mentally and physically because of my mother's words I became a better person always giving my all to anything. Now I use this mentality in school whenever an upcoming assignment or test is coming. Now I'm becoming more prepared and if I fail once then I try and try again till I succeed. The way how I use my mentality to the world is simply being able to keep moving forward, no one is perfect which is okay that is why I'm prepared to fail because I viewing failing as winning.
John J. DiPietro COME OUT STRONG Scholarship
My role model would have to be my Grandfather, I have looked up to him for many things but the one thing that made him be role model was becoming a father to me. My dad left when I was a baby so it was hard for me to grow up since I was a boy and I needed to learn things of what a man should do and shouldn't do but it turns out my mother had to be the one to fill in that gap she taught me how to respect others and always treat others with respect so you get the same treatment but as I grew older my mom can't really teach me what I'm supposed to learn so thats where my grandfather came in he taught me about when fixing on cars, working around the house and building shed or roofs. Even though he speaks Spanish and I couldn't speak well in that language but I understood what he was saying. In time I got better at speaking Spanish and started to interact with him more, one thing I will never forget from him is that even though times are tough he still manages to get through it with a smile. So I decided I wanted to make some changes with myself, I wanted to focus on getting better at math since its the one I struggle with the most, I would get on the computer practice doing math problems and tests to improve my skills. I am also practicing speaking Spanish more so I can have the ability to interact with other family members from Mexico. What I want to do is to keep practicing and also to work at my dream job which is cyber security but also want to repay back to people by continuing to be respectful and listening to others, my grandpa made me realize there are going to be times where its tough but in order to get through it I have to just keep going and continue being positive.
