Bio

With over 15 years of experience in dermatology, I have dedicated my career to helping clients feel more confident through aesthetic treatments. My journey in this field began as a medical assistant, where I first discovered my passion for patient care and skin health. This led me to become a licensed aesthetician, allowing me to directly impact my clients' lives through specialized treatments. Driven by a desire to further enhance my skills and understanding, I pursued a career in nursing and became a registered nurse. Each step I've taken has been motivated by my belief in the transformative power of dermatological care. Now, I am excited to be pursuing a Master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner, which will enable me to combine my hands-on experience with advanced clinical knowledge to provide comprehensive care. Seeing my clients gain confidence in their appearance and improve their quality of life is incredibly rewarding. I am passionate about continuing to innovate and lead in the field of dermatology, offering the highest standard of care.

The future I want to build is more than a career, it is a space where people feel safe, respected and empowered. I want to build an inclusive dermatology and aesthetics practice that blends evidence-based healthcare with confidence-building care, especially for communities that have historically been overlooked or underserved. I envision a place where skincare is not treated as vanity but as wellness, where patients are educated, supported and reminded that they deserve to feel good in their own skin. I have seen firsthand how skin concerns can impact someone’s mental and emotional health. Acne, hyperpigmentation, scarring and chronic skin conditions can affect confidence, social connection and even a person;s willingness to show up fully in the world. For many individuals, especially people of color and LGBTQIA+ patients, healthcare settings can feel intimidating or dismissive. I want to build a practice that does the opposite: a space where clients feel affirmed and understood from the moment they walk in. This goal is deeply personal to me. My own journey has required resilience, self-belief, and the courage to keep moving forward even when I didn’t always feel represented. Pursuing higher education as a nurse has strengthened my ability to provide safe, competent care while also shaping me into a leader who values empathy and inclusion my long term goal is to become a nurse practitioner specialiazing in dermatology and aesthetics so I can treat patients with greater autonomy and provide care that is both medically sound and emotionally supportive. The impact I hope to build goes beyond one treatment room. I want to create opportunities for others by mentoring future nurses and training providers to deliver culturally competent care across all skin tones. I also want to develop educational programs and resources that promote skin safely, long-term prevention and realistic expectations. By prioritizing patient education, I can help reduce risk, improve outcomes and empower people to make informed choices about their health. Building this future would change my life by allowing me to live in alignment with my purpose: serving others through skill, compassion and integrity. It would also strengthen my community by offering care that is inclusive, affirming and rooted in trust. I want people to leave my care not only looking better but feeling stronger, seen, respected and proud of who they are. That is what I hope to build with my education: a lasting legacy of healing, confidence and opportunity.

As a registered nurse, I’ve learned that nursing is far more than completing tasks or following protocols, it is a commitment to serving people with skill, compassion and integrity during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Every patient interaction has reinforced something important to me: quality care requires both clinical knowledge and emotional intelligence. That truth is what inspired me to pursue an advanced degree. I want to expand my ability to advocate, educate and provide evidence-based care at a higher level, while continuing to create safe and affirming spaces for people I serve. My decision to continue my education comes from a deep desire to grow into the strongest provider I can be. In my experience, patients often remember how a nurse made them feel just as much as they remember what was done for them. I’ve cared for individuals who were anxious, discouraged or hesitant to seek help due to past experiences, fear of judgment, or a lack of trust in healthcare. Those moments motivated me to pursue advanced training so I can support patients with greater autonomy, stronger clinical decision-making and expanded resources for long-term health outcomes. My goal is to become a nurse practitioner with a focus in dermatology and aesthetics. I am passionate about helping patients improve their skin health while also restoring confidence and quality of life. I have seen firsthand how skin conditions such as acne, hyperpigmentation, scarring and chronic dermatologic concerns can affect self-esteem, mental health and daily function. For many people, skin issues are not just cosmetic, they carry emotional and social weight. I want to provide care that addresses the full picture: physical health, emotional wellbeing and the patient’s individual goals. As I pursue this specialty, I also plan to prioritize culturally competent care and safe treatment approaches for all skin tones and backgrounds. I believe every patient deserves personalized care that considers their unique needs, lifestyle and history. I have a strong commitment to patient education, especially regarding skin safety, pigment risk, and treatment planning that supports long-term results. I also want to contribute to better standards in aesthetics and dermatology by promoting evidence-based practice and encouraging providers to value both safety and inclusivity. Continuing my education is also deeply personal to me. As someone who understands what it feels like to move through spaces without always feeling represented or fully understood, I am committed to being the kind of provider who makes patients feel respected, heard and safe. My lived experiences have shaped the way I show up in healthcare, with empathy, cultural awareness and an intentional commitment to providing affirming care. Ultimately, my long-term goals include becoming a leader in my field, mentoring future nurses, and helping build pathways for those who aspire to grow within nursing. Pursuing an advanced degree is not just the next step for my career, it is the next step in my purpose: to heal, to educate and to uplift others through nursing.

Medicine is demanding not only because of its complexity but because it constantly reminds us of our limitations. One experience during my nursing training that challenged my assumptions about patient care occurred while I was treating a patient with moderate to severe acne. From a clinical standpoint, I understood the condition well and knew that topical therapies alone would not adequately address the underlying pathology. The patient needed oral medication to truly get their acne under control and improve their quality of life. As a registered nurse, however, I was limited by my scope of practice and had to refer the patient to a dermatologist. While this was the appropriate and ethical decision, it was humbling. I realized that knowledge alone is not enough in medicine, authority, timing and continuity of care matter deeply. What challenged me most was recognizing that although I could identify the right treatment plan, I could not fully execute it myself. I worried about delays in care, access to specialists and the emotional toll this condition was taking on the patient’s self-esteem. This experience reshaped how I view patient care. It taught me that medicine is not just about diagnosing and treating disease, but about responsibility and accountability. Even when I could not provide definitive treatment, I focused on what I could do: listening without judgment, educating the patient, validating their frustration and offering reassurance. That encounter reinforced the importance of empathy and communication as essential clinical tools, especially when medical limitations exist. It also challenged my assumptions about myself. I realized that my desire to help patients did not stop at providing supportive care. I wanted the ability to follow through fully, to offer comprehensive, evidence-based treatment without unnecessary barriers. That moment became a turning point in my decision to pursue advanced education. I understood that becoming a nurse practitioner would allow me to bridge gaps in care, improve continuity and advocate more effectively for my patients' needs. This experience shaped the kind of medical professional I am becoming by grounding me in humility and purpose. I am learning to respect the limits of my current role while preparing responsibly for greater clinical autonomy. It has strengthened my commitment to lifelong learning, interdisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered care. Most importantly, it reminded me that patients remember not only the treatments they receive, but how they are treated as people. As I continue my training, I carry this lesson with me. I aim to become a clinician who combines clinical competence with compassion, who recognizes the weight of medical responsibility and who never loses sight of the human experience behind every diagnosis.

My life journey has been shaped by resilience, self-discovery and deep belief in second chances. Born in 1984, I am now pursuing my Master of Science in Nursing at the age of 411, a decision rooted in growth, purpose and faith in the transformative power of education. Returning to school later in life was not easy but it has been one of the most meaningful choices I have made. I began my healthcare career from the ground up, working first as a medical assistant, then as a licensed aesthetician, and later a registered nurse. Each role strengthened my work ethic and deepened my understanding of patient care. Over time, I discovered my passion for dermatology and witnessed how profoundly skin health can affect confidence and emotional well-being. As my experience grew, so did my awareness of limitations. There were moments when I knew I could do more for my patients if I had advanced education and greater clinical autonomy. Choosing to return to school in my forties required courage and sacrifice. I balance graduate studies with work and financial responsibility, navigating the realities of adult life while remaining committed to my goals. As the son of immigrant parents, I was raised to value education as a pathway to opportunity. Being the first in my family to pursue a master’s degree carries both pride and responsibility and it motivates me to succeed not only for myself but for others who may believe it is too late to begin again. These experiences have shaped my personal values and professional aspirations. I value lifelong learning, empathy and service. I believe education is a responsibility to use knowledge to uplift others and strengthen the communities we serve. As a nurse, I have seen how compassionate, informed care can restore dignity and empower patients, reinforcing my commitment to advanced practice nursing. Through my education, I plan to make a meaningful impact by becoming a nurse practitioner with a focus in dermatology. My goal is to provide evidence-based, inclusive care that improves both physical health and self-esteem, particularly for underserved and marginalized populations. I also hope to mentor future nurses and advocate for representation and culturally competent care within healthcare. The story of Debra S. Jackson resonates deeply with me. Like Debra, I chose to return to school late in life, trusting that education could redefine my future. Her commitment to service and community reflects the nurse I aspire to be. This scholarship would ease the financial burden of graduate education and allow me to focus fully on my studies while continuing to grow as a clinician and advocate. At 41, I am not starting over, I am moving forward with purpose, resilience and intention. With this education, I am committed to making a lasting difference in healthcare and in the lives of those I serve.
Cindy J. Visser Memorial Nursing Scholarship
I was inspired to become a nurse because I have always believed that caring for others is one of the most meaningful ways to make a difference. From an early age, I was drawn to helping people feel supported, understood and safe during vulnerable moments. Nursing provided a way for me to transform that instinct into purpose, combining scientific knowledge with compassion and using both to improve lives. To me, nursing is not just a profession; it's a calling rooted in empathy and service. My personal background strongly shaped this path. As the son of immigrant parents, I was raised with deep respect for hard work, resilience and caring for one another. Those values continue to guide how I practice today. As a registered nurse, I strive to be intentional in every interaction, listening closely, explaining thoroughly and treating each patient with dignity. I believe the way care is delivered matters just as much as the care itself. Throughout my nursing journey, I have witnessed how empathy can transform patient experiences. One moment that stands out involved caring for a patient struggling with acne that deeply affected their self-esteem. While I could provide initial treatment, I knew the patient required more advanced intervention and had to be referred elsewhere. Even though I could not fully resolve their condition, I focused on reassurance, education and emotional support. That experience reinforced my commitment to compassionate care and inspired me to continue advancing my education so I can better serve patients in the future. I hope to build a career that reflects both clinical excellence and genuine humanity. My long-term goal is to continue growing as a nurse and eventually practice as a nurse practitioner, with a focus on dermatology. I want to help patients regain confidence, improve quality oof life and feel truly seen within healthcare spaces. No matter my role, I aim to remain grounded in professionalism, empathy and patient-centered care. The life and career of Cindy J. Visser deeply resonates with me. Her decades of service across medical-surgical nursing, urgent care, hospice and home health demonstrate a lifelong commitment to caring for others at every stage of life. Cindy’s ability to combine clinical skill with compassion, intentionality, and professionalism represents the kind of nurse I strive to be. Her dedication to community, family and service reflects the heat of nursing as I understand it. I carry forward the values Cindy exemplified by choosing empathy daily, advocating for my patients and honoring the trust placed in me as a nurse. Through presence, patience and compassion, I aim to provide care that not only treats illness but also uplifts the human spirit. In doing so, I hope to honor Cindy J. Visser’s legacy and continue the tradition of nursing as an act of love, service and community.

My motivation for pursuing higher education comes from a defining moment in my nursing practice. While treating a patient struggling with acne, I recognized that topical treatments alone were not enough. I knew the patient needed oral medication to truly manage their condition and regain confidence. However, as a registered nurse, I was limited in my scope of practice and had to refer the patient to a dermatologist. In that moment, I realized that with advanced education and nurse practitioner training, I could have provided comprehensive care myself. That experience solidified my decision to pursue a Master of Science in Nursing and become a nurse practitioner. Dermatology is deeply meaningful to me because skin health is closely tied to self-esteem and emotional well-being. I have seen how conditions such as acne can affect how patients see themselves and how they show up in the world. Being able to restore confidence through evidence-based dermatologic care is powerful and it is the impact I hope to make every day as a future nurse practitioner. My pursuit of higher education is also deeply personal. I am the first in my family to graduate college and as the son of immigrant parents, I was raised to view education as both an opportunity and responsibility. Balancing graduate school while working has been challenging, but it has strengthened my resilience, discipline and commitment to my goals. I am motivated not only by personal growth, but by the opportunity to represent and advocate for others who may not yet see themselves reflected in advanced practice nursing. I believe strongly that exceptional clinicians are lifelong learners. Throughout my career, I have actively pursued continuing medical education to strengthen my practice and remain current in dermatologic care. I have attended multiple conferences, including Diversity in Dermatology (DID), where I gained valuable insight into evidence-based treatments, culturally competent care and the importance off representation in medicine. These experiences reinforced my commitment to ongoing education and algin closely with the mission of Skin, Bones Hearts & Private Parts. This scholarship would provide essential support as I continue my education as an adult learner. Graduate nursing education requires a significant financial investment, and balancing tuition, clinical expenses and work responsibilities can be demanding. Receiving this scholarship would help offset these costs and allow me to focus more fully on advancing my clinical knowledge, engaging in continuing education opportunities and excelling in my training. Ultimately, this scholarship will help me continue my journey toward becoming a nurse practitioner who integrates clinical excellence, lifelong learning, and compassion. With this support, I will be better equipped to provide comprehensive dermatologic care, empower patients through restored confidence and uphold the highest standards of evidence-based nursing practice throughout my career.
