My name is Joys Igban, and I am a third-year college student and a member of Transformation Church, located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I joined the Church in April of 2023 and immediately decided to serve in the Children's Department. My love for children, the desire to learn to effectively care for kids, and my need to serve the Lord pioneered this decision. I was accepted into the service unit and placed with the One-Year-olds. I loved my position and looked forward to being there every 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. I had the responsibility of changing diapers and rocking the children to sleep, as they were barely able to go to the bathroom and sleep peacefully without help. It was also my responsibility to play with the kids, feed them during snack time, and teach them songs about the Bible. While serving, I would always picture myself with my future kids, showering them with all the love and care they deserved. This pushed me to tend to the kids in my care with so much love and gentleness like they were my own. I was also glad I could serve in that department, because there were not enough people volunteering, leaving most volunteers overwhelmed with so much to do. There were kids with disabilities who struggled to play and run around like the other kids. This broke my heart and moved me to pray for them. I did this for so long that it became a habit for me to whisper a silent prayer for any sick or disabled child I come across in my community. I am reminded of Matthew 15:26 which says 'Healing is the Children's Bread'. I understand from this scripture that as Children of God, we are healed from any deformities we might have. I have seen about two kids healed and become whole again. This made my heart full of joy and faith in the healing of others. I eventually moved to the Ushering Department after a year of serving in the Children's Department, but I still pray and believe in God for the healing of other children who are ill. I have found myself drawn to helping the homeless and hungry. Cooking, distributing food, and having encouragement to the helpless and hurt. I had earlier signed up for mission outings with my college to perform these activities, but I was unable to be a part of it because I was sent out of school due to my tuition payment default. It saddened me, but I did not let that stop me from helping people in the smallest way I could. I assist people with directions when they are lost (I also enjoy being an Usher because it is a responsibility of mine), I assist with carrying heavy things for people, and recently volunteered to assist a pastor (in a different church) with office work, as she was drowning in her workload. While this might not be much service to my community, I believe that doing something, anything, is better than doing nothing at all. I hope that with this scholarship, I will be able to resume back to school and eventually be a part of the weekly mission outings, this time for good. I hope to be presented with more opportunities to do more good for people in my community. As for now, I will continue to create opportunities for myself to be of help , because I believe it is my life's goal to be a blessing to others, just as God has blessed me immensely.
    Dreamers Scholarship
My name is Joys Igban, and I am an international student from Nigeria. I am currently studying Political Science with the aspiration of becoming a lawyer. I arrived in the United States alone at the age of sixteen, driven by the pursuit of a higher education. When I first arrived, I was filled with hope and joy, knowing I was one step closer to achieving my goals. However, leaving my parents and two younger siblings behind in my home country was difficult. My parents sacrificed everything to help me begin my college education. They tried to hide the fact that sending me here meant many days and months of limited food for them, but I noticed, and it saddened me. Despite struggling to provide food and pay for my siblings' education, they remained determined to support me. My mother's health was severely affected by the demands of her work, to the point that doctors in Nigeria warned her to quit her job, fearing it could lead to her demise. Devastated but resolved, she heeded their advice and eventually started a less strenuous business to continue supporting our family. When she saw how much I was struggling in America, she made the difficult decision to close her business, sell all her equipment, and send me the proceeds, leaving the family to rely solely on my father's modest income. Their dedication has fueled my determination to excel in my undergraduate education. I am committed to learning all I can so that I can one day help others. Witnessing people struggle daily has always pained me, and from a young age, I felt it was my life's mission to make a difference. At just ten years old, I decided to dedicate my life to this cause. Although I am not yet a lawyer, I do what I can to help those around me. I stand up for individuals who are being harassed, and I cook and share food with those in need. It is my hope that one day, I will have enough resources to regularly feed the homeless. This scholarship would greatly ease my family’s worries about my educational expenses and reduce the financial burden on my parents. With this support, they could focus on their own needs, which they have long neglected due to their efforts to support me. It pains me to know that my family back home can barely afford to eat and that my siblings struggle to pay their tuition to continue their education. Currently, I have an on-campus job that provides some income to cover a portion of my educational costs. With this scholarship, I would be able to pay at least seventy percent of my tuition for this academic year. As an international student, I face challenges that U.S. citizens do not. I am unable to work off-campus, which limits me to earning little more than the minimum wage here in Oklahoma, where my school is located. While I am grateful for the opportunity to work, I often wish I could secure a higher-paying job to better support myself. Additionally, I have not been able to travel back home since I arrived in December 2021, due to financial constraints. I also do not have access to federal grants or certain opportunities available to U.S. citizens. Furthermore, as an international student, obtaining a student loan is difficult because I would need a co-signer, and understandably, people are hesitant to risk their credit. These restrictions make it challenging to fund my education, which is why this scholarship would be a blessing for both my present and future endeavors.
Justice Adolpho A. Birch Jr. Scholarship
Question 1 My name is Joys Igban, and I am a Junior at Oral Roberts University studying Political Science (Pre-law) and Psychology. I am a student from Nigeria who intends to study Law and eventually become a lawyer in the United States. I graduate college in December of 2025. I plan to take the LSAT in the Fall of 2025, apply to schools, and then resume in the Fall of 2026. Despite not taking the LSAT yet, I have a list of schools I intend to apply to. These include Harvard University, Boston University, University of Georgia, Princeton University, and Stanford University. Question 2 Outside of my college education, I capitalize on every learning opportunity I come across in my free time. I read books that challenge me to see the world through a different lens while opening my eyes to world politics and the navigation of the justice system here in America. I find myself continuously in awe of how much knowledge I acquire when I pick up a book to read. I also found that my interest in the law peaked greatly. I also immerse myself in the world of politics, especially American politics. Being able to observe the fight for power and how national issues are handled by the government teaches me so much. As I major in Political Science, I am driven to seek conversations on politics wherever I can. This summer, I have been involving myself in thoughtful discussions on politics and have also been careful to pay attention to the opinions of others and the knowledge they have gathered from various credible sources. I have found that these conversations enhance my thinking. I am forced to carefully analyze details in order to give the right response. These are skills that are highly required for a career in Law. I have found that engaging in thoughtful discussions reduces my anxiety about going to law school; it makes me feel prepared for the critical questions that would be posed in the classroom. In addition, I watch videos that extensively talk about the history of the United States, the power struggle, and the principles of the legal system. As a student in a foreign country, doing this helps me understand more about the country I am studying in. Question 3 For high school, I attended a boarding school in my home country. Students in lower grades were expected to treat upperclassmen with respect and address them as 'Seniors'; they were also expected to do certain tasks for them. This created room for bullying. Younger students were beaten for refusing to perform tasks for the older students. I would intervene to stop it. I faced backlash because these students were oftentimes in the same grade as me. I got mean looks, and they confronted me on how I was expected to be in agreement with them. I would tell them that respect is usually given to whom it is due and then walk away. I wasn't fazed by their insults. I had earlier realized that to get help from people, older or not, being kind is necessary. It was a shame that others were still unaware of this. Question 4 My love for museums taught me to be interested in human rights. Museums teach me more about history than any teacher can. It is a time machine that takes me back to uncovering and learning about the past. I am able to see how people in history were affected by the legal system, especially African Americans, who were treated poorly. My initiative would be focused on restoring the rights of Black people that were lost for many years, for example, the wrongful imprisonment of African Americans. The Innocent Project showed a 2022 report from the registry explaining that innocent Black people were seven times more likely to be wrongly convicted of a murder than white people. The Death Penalty Information Center also put out a report from the registry database showing that " African Americans constituted 56% (74/134) of all death-sentenced exonerees; 55% (294/535) of wrongful murder convictions resulting in life imprisonment; and 54% (270/497) of wrongful murder convictions in which exonerees were sentenced to imprisonment for terms of years". My initiative will help wrongfully convicted African Americans get their freedom. My career in law would give me an advantage in helping. It is my duty as an African to take care of African Americans, who are also my people. It hurts to see my fellow Africans mistreated.

My name is Joys Igban, and I stand at the intersection of Political Science and Psychology, two disciplines that have profoundly shaped my worldview and aspirations. Each day, as I delve deeper into the intricacies of these fields, I am reminded of the immense power they hold—the power to shape societies, transform individual lives, and catalyze positive change on a global scale. The realm of Political Science has provided me with a comprehensive lens through which I view the world. I recognize the pivotal role that governance plays in shaping the trajectory of nations and the lives of their citizens. Governments, with their policies, decisions, and actions, possess the potential to uplift societies, champion human rights, and foster inclusive growth. Conversely, they also hold the power to perpetuate injustices, marginalize communities, and stifle progress. This duality underscores the profound responsibility entrusted upon those in positions of leadership and influence—a responsibility I am deeply committed to upholding with integrity, empathy, and diligence. Parallelly, my passion for Psychology runs deep, serving as a compass that guides my understanding of the human psyche—the intricate interplay of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that define our existence. Each class I attend, each book I read, and each discussion I engage in fuels my curiosity and deepens my appreciation for the complexities of the mind, soul, and spirit. I firmly believe that by unraveling the mysteries of the human mind, we empower ourselves to be more compassionate, empathetic, and responsible individuals, capable of fostering harmonious relationships and nurturing inclusive communities. From a tender age, I have been imbued with a sense of curiosity—an insatiable desire to understand the world around me and the forces that shape it. As the proverbial 'curious kid,' I observed with keen interest the nuances of human behavior, the intricacies of societal structures, and the dynamics of global governance. This innate curiosity, coupled with a fervent passion for learning, propelled me on a journey of discovery—a journey that has been both enlightening and transformative. As I chart my career path, my overarching goal is clear: to leverage my expertise in Political Science and Psychology to make a positive and lasting impact on the world. I envision myself playing a pivotal role in shaping policies that prioritize human well-being, fostering dialogues that bridge divides, and championing initiatives that promote mental health, social justice, and sustainable development. In essence, my journey is one of synergy—a harmonious blend of Political Science's macro perspective and Psychology's micro insights. It is a journey fueled by curiosity, guided by compassion, and driven by a relentless commitment to creating a world where governance is equitable, societies are inclusive, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive. As I embark on this noble endeavor, I am reminded of the profound words of Mahatma Gandhi, who famously said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Inspired by these timeless words and fueled by my passion for Political Science and Psychology, I am committed to being a catalyst for positive change, a beacon of hope in a world yearning for understanding, empathy, and transformation. In conclusion, my journey is just beginning, but my resolve is unwavering. With a deep-seated commitment to fostering meaningful change and a unique blend of expertise in Political Science and Psychology, I am poised to make a difference—one policy, one dialogue, and one individual at a time.

Central to these teachings is the profound significance of the Ten Commandments, which encapsulate the divine directives guiding our moral compass. Among these commandments, the mandate 'Thou shall not kill' resonates deeply within me, serving as a steadfast beacon that shapes my convictions and actions. The sanctity of life, I believe, is a testament to the inherent value and dignity bestowed upon each individual by the Living God. In conclusion, my faith journey, rooted in the timeless teachings of Christianity and fueled by a profound love for life, propels me forward in my quest to enact meaningful change, foster a culture of life, and safeguard the sanctity of all stages of life. With unwavering resolve and steadfast commitment, I am poised to make a difference—one life at a time, one heart at a time, and one transformative act at a time.

My name is Joys Igban, and I am currently immersed in the study of Political Science. Throughout my academic journey, I have delved deep into understanding the intricate dynamics of politics, governance, and the profound impact of our leaders on society. This exploration has provided me with invaluable insights into how our leaders shape not only the trajectory of a nation but also the very essence of individual lives. In my Political Science classes, I have been enlightened about the pivotal role that lawmakers play in sculpting our collective future. It's fascinating to recognize that the decisions made within the hallowed halls of legislative bodies have far-reaching implications, setting the stage for the aspirations and challenges that define our era. The power vested in our representatives, I've come to understand, is not just about the enactment of laws but about sculpting the ethos of a society, determining its values, and charting its course through the annals of time. Beyond the confines of the classroom, my involvement in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature (OIL) has been transformative. This experience served as a real-world laboratory, illuminating the transformative potential of laws and policies. Through spirited debates, rigorous analyses, and collaborative endeavors, I witnessed firsthand the power of legislation to instigate change, challenge norms, and champion the voices of the marginalized. Drawing from the realms of history, cultural anthropology, and political science, I am convinced that a holistic understanding of these disciplines can further augment my endeavors to make a tangible difference in the world. History serves as a poignant reminder of our past triumphs and tribulations, offering invaluable lessons that can guide our present actions. Cultural anthropology unveils the rich tapestry of human experiences, fostering empathy and understanding across diverse communities. Meanwhile, geography underscores the interconnectedness of our world, emphasizing the importance of collective stewardship and sustainable development. Armed with this multifaceted perspective, I am committed to leveraging my knowledge and experiences to advocate for equitable policies, foster inclusive dialogues, and champion transformative initiatives. By harnessing the lessons learned from political science, I aspire to contribute towards a world where governance is synonymous with justice, leadership is anchored in empathy, and policies resonate with the aspirations of every individual. In essence, I envision a future where the legacy we leave behind is not merely defined by the laws we enact but by the lives we touch, the communities we uplift, and the world we collectively strive to build—a world where understanding our past informs our present, shaping a future brimming with promise and possibility.

    Financial Literacy Scholarship Award
In my pursuit of financial literacy, the most profound and enduring money lesson I have received emanates from the sage teachings of my mother, a seasoned banker whose early life experiences shaped her understanding of the true value of money. Her background, rooted in a humble and financially constrained upbringing, served as the crucible from which invaluable financial wisdom emerged, leaving an indelible mark on my journey to financial literacy. My mother's lessons on the value of money were not merely theoretical; they were lived experiences that spoke to the essence of prudence, frugality, and the power of saving. Her upbringing, characterized by economic hardship, endowed her with a firsthand understanding of the scarcity and preciousness of financial resources. From this wellspring of knowledge, she imparted the importance of financial responsibility to me and my three brothers. One of the core tenets of my mother's teachings was the unwavering emphasis on saving, irrespective of our current financial comfort. Her insistence on cultivating a saving habit, regardless of our immediate circumstances, resonated as a timeless and universal principle. It was a lesson grounded in the recognition that financial security is not solely contingent on the magnitude of one's income but on the astuteness with which resources are managed. She ingeniously instilled in us the habit of setting aside a portion of our earnings, no matter how modest, for a rainy day. This early exposure to saving not only nurtured financial discipline but also sowed the seeds for future financial stability. Through her guidance, my mother underscored the significance of creating a financial cushion that could shield us from unforeseen challenges and pave the way for future opportunities. Moreover, my mother's teachings were a testament to the enduring nature of financial principles. She demonstrated that the value of money transcends temporal circumstances, urging us to save not only in times of want but also during periods of abundance. This nuanced approach to financial management became a guiding principle in my journey toward financial literacy, fostering a mindset that views saving as a continuous and non-negotiable practice. As I reflect on the best money lesson I received while pursuing financial literacy, it is clear that my mother's teachings have been a lodestar, steering me through the complexities of personal finance. The value of money, she taught me, extends beyond its mere numerical representation; it is a tool that, when wielded judiciously, can shape the contours of one's financial destiny. As stated earlier, the best money lesson on my journey to financial literacy stems from the invaluable teachings of my mother—a banker with an indomitable spirit forged in the crucible of financial adversity. Her wisdom, grounded in the principles of saving and financial prudence, continues to guide me as I navigate the intricate landscape of personal finance. Through her enduring lessons, I have learned not only the value of money but also the transformative power of financial foresight and discipline.

    Sunshine Legall Scholarship
My name is Joys Igban, and I am a seventeen-year-old from Nigeria. I am a sophomore studying Political Science and Sociology at Oral Roberts University. For as long as I have remembered, I have only aspired to do one thing: make people happy. I remember looking around me when I was ten and wishing everyone was safe and comfortable. I always checked on my friends and family to ensure they were safe and happy. Even as a little kid, I would close my eyes and imagine a world where everyone was happy and full of joy and security. I later discovered I was passionate about defending people and making them feel good about themselves. Those actions gave birth to my love and desire to pursue a law degree. As stated earlier, I would love to become a lawyer in the future. I look forward to defending and bringing justice to people who deserve it. In all honesty, I would love to be able to protect those who do not have the resources to do so for themselves. I want to dry the tears from the eyes of those who have wept due to injustice and hear the sigh of relief from the mouths of clients who have spent most nights wishing and hoping that things could be different. I crave to hear the cry of joy from various families and see innocent convicts receive hugs from mothers and family members who thought they would never see them again. I want to give families an opportunity to dine together once again without fearing for the life of one of their members. This is a dream that I hope to make a reality soon. Because of this, I am dedicated to studying and paying attention to my classes. I make a conscious effort to understand what is being taught in class rather than just showing up and having no knowledge of anything taught that day. It gets hard most times because of the heavy burden my tuition and fees place on me. As an international student, I am only permitted to work on campus, and I make minimum wage, unable to cover my fees. I came to the United States on my own and I try my best to work for most of my tuition because my parents have my three other siblings to take care of. Despite this hardship, I have decided to keep pressing and striving for my future and the future of millions of people I could be equipped to help later in life. Just as I used to as a child, I still close my eyes and imagine a happy world, but this time I can feel the joy and peace just from thinking about possibly changing the lives of individuals around the world. This is my life goal that, by faith and works, will be actualized.

Influence as far as I am concerned, is a word people use while having no idea what it means. In our present day, people have taken up the term "influencer" to describe themselves. According to them, an influencer is someone who promotes brands, makes content and has a huge following. How do I describe influence or an influencer? Influence is the ability to control or affect the decision and decision-making process of a person(s). The same definition applies to being an "influencer". An influencer is a person who holds the power to sway the decisions of a group of people. It is the influence they have that helps them promote brands and get people to purchase whatever they advertise. I try my best to "do unto others what I want to be done to me". Whether it is being kind, having tolerance or being understanding, I do things that are seen as valuable to me and others around me. Doing little acts like those mentioned above gives people around a sense of community and love. The way I express myself with empathy influences people to do the same. How? It is simple, when I do good things, people around me feel loved and appreciated and see it as a duty to do the same back to me and pass it along to the next person. Doing good to teach people kind values, makes the world a better place through passing on knowledge. My first time in the United States was at the age of 16. I came on my own with the hopes of having a good college experience. Little did I know I would face the most unexpected problems here. Being from a different country, I had a different accent. I discovered that my accent was hard to understand and it led to frustration. In class, I would ask questions and would have to repeat them a lot because my professors couldn't seem to understand what I said. Sometimes, it got so bad I had to write what I had to say on a paper so the student next to me, could read it and it annoyed me. I strived to improve. As funny as it is, I watched YouTube videos, my pronunciation became better and classes became easier. I major in Political Science and minor in Sociology. After college, I would love to go to law school to become a Lawyer. I would love to represent people who desperately need justice. I also love acting and everything entertainment. I would go further to pursue my passion for acting. I would love to be featured in films, movies and tv shows. Receiving this scholarship would be a sigh of relief to me. It would relieve so much stress, overthinking and tension relating to paying my college tuition. Receiving this scholarship would give me more motivation to work towards achieving my goals. Lastly, this would be a huge contribution towards influencing the world through the passage of knowledge.
    Your Dream Music Scholarship
A famous person once said that "music is the food of the soul" and I could not help but agree with that statement. Whenever I am sad, angry or even exhausted, it is amazing how there are millions of songs out there that have the power to make me feel better. The way a song could lighten up my mood makes me believe that music has the power to heal the world and bring abundant joy. "My Mind and Me by Selena Gomez is a song that never fails to bring tears to my eyes. The rawness, authenticity and the way I can relate to the message it passes across, makes the song so important to me. It is a song that talks about the battle and the earnest conversations between her mind and herself. "Wanna hear a part of my story? I tried to hide in the glory" In this first line, Selena is being honest about a part of her life that she tried to hide in her fame. This first line got my attention because there are famous people out there who try to make people believe they live perfect lives. "My mind and me, we don't get along sometimes and it gets hard to breathe" Moving along further into the song she talks about how her mind causes her to believe in negative things, leading to self-doubt and fear. The event described is common to most people, including me. Hearing my mind tell me things that are not true, affects me in ways that cannot be explained without tears. Despite the pain, remembering the truth about myself, remembering my worth and understanding how my mind works gives me the drive and motivation to keep fighting and choosing happiness every day.
    Maggie's Way- International Woman’s Scholarship
Maggie was a strong-spirited woman for sure. Reading her story opened up something in me about love, kindness and determination that can be understood in my story. In December 2021, I moved to the United States at the tender age of 16 to start my college education. Coming to a country on my own that I had never been to, scared my parents but I assured them that I would be alright and I was. The cold was the first issue I faced, coming from a country (Nigeria) where snow is absent, I struggled with my health for a while. Since I arrived in December, the snow was heavy and non-stop. I was so cold even when I had bundled up myself in about three big pieces of clothes. I was stuck inside my family friend's house for my first few weeks here. I was excited to go to school despite my health scare in December. It was January and so the spring had begun. I got to school and had my first real culture shock. It dawned on me that the students and teachers alike, could not understand my accent. In all my excitement, I seemed to have forgotten about being from a foreign country. Thinking about forgetting something so important now, sounds so absurd. I tried so hard to get them to understand me but along the line, frustration hovered over me. I had problems communicating with my RA (Resident Advisor) who was helping me move into my dorm. It was so much worse in my classes. I would ask my professors questions and they would ask me to repeat myself several times because they could not understand my accent. After a while, to my embarrassment, they would ask a student close to me to repeat what I said causing another round of 'Americans guessing Joys' accent'. In the end, I would end up writing down the question. I almost cried. I was getting so tired of trying to communicate and I was on the verge of tears. The excitement I had at the beginning of the semester had dwindled. I just wanted to go home and find comfort. Then, I remembered why I wanted to come here, and why I was so determined to write the SAT even when I was so young. Determination coursed through my body and I pushed the threatening tears back. I decided to watch YouTube videos to help my pronunciation and sharpen my communication skills. I practiced a lot and despite the difficulty, I was able to improve. After a month I got better and relief washed over me. I decided to keep that determination for the remaining years I had in the states. I might have thought it was over, but I was mistaken. Something that would threaten to break down my walls of determination was brewing. I was given a partial scholarship to Oral Roberts University and so I had to cover the rest of my tuition and fees myself. At first, I was confident that I could cover the necessary bills but when I took a second look at the bill, I knew that it would be really difficult. I was frightened so I decided to get an on-campus job. I thought all would be well and that my earnings would cover it all but again, I was so wrong. I ignored most of my personal needs and strived to pay my tuition. This time, there would be no tears despite my blurry eyes. Why? Because, l refuse to be the discouraged and sad girl I was in January.
    Bookman 5 Scholarship
Hardship is something that every individual goes through at one point in life and those seasons of life tend to be the most frustrating and heart-wrenching. I had the thought of writing this like every other scholarship essay but I would rather discuss the reality of my situation than write about something unreal. My name is Joys Igban and I am a sixteen-year-old freshman at Oral Roberts University. I come from a family of six and I have three brothers. My older brother and I are in college; he is a junior and I am a freshman in college. My mum has a small business and my dad works in a college. A huge portion of my parents' earnings is used in providing for the daily needs of my siblings and me and also providing tuition for our high school and college education. Unfortunately, despite my parents' effort to make life somewhat easy for us, that is not the case. My mum does not make much sales and her earnings are barely enough to pay bills and our school fees and the same as my dad. Having three other siblings, I really cannot imagine the stress they go through each day. As a child, I wanted to become a lawyer and I decided to study Political Science. I have always hated injustice and I hoped to one day make an impact in the world of today by studying hard and smart in college and law school and then using the knowledge gotten to support individuals that have been treated unjustly. Peace is one thing I love so much and I would stop at nothing to make sure that the world knows what it means to have it. I am in college now and sadly, I cannot push away the feeling that my dreams may never be actualized because of how heavy the burden of the fees is. It makes me so sad to see my parents struggle so much to take care of me and my brothers. I ask myself daily if there's any hope to become what I want to be and that makes me so sad. I am this close to giving up even if I don't want to. I decided to assist my parents by taking up some part-jobs but it does very little to contribute. All my life, I have always wanted to be of help to people because I know how hard it is to have no help when it is desperately needed. I want to bring change to the world in the littlest way I can. I would love to take away the hurt and suffering of people in the future with my education. The legal system needs a lot of positive reforms and I am more than willing to help. The world needs people with positive mindsets to come together to foster development and reforms. Injustice, corruption, and poverty are issues that need to be tackled early. Having the right resources and finances will be of great help and will also be a contribution to the development of the world of today.
