In the pursuit of my education, I have faced a lot of challenges that are different depending on the environment I was in. I started my education in Uganda for 7 years. I went to a boarding school where punishment by beating was an expectation in everything you did wrong. Learning, failing tests, making friends and fear of punishment backed me up in a corner of being quiet and always to myself and always expect the worse by thinking negatively.
When I started school in the US, everything was the opposite. My opinion matters and my educators actually cared but because of the damage from before, I did not engage and didn't always use all the resources I was given or speak my mind. On top of that my family had expectations of what I must study but school has changed me, and I have learned that it is not wrong to speak my truth and say my feelings or be wrong about something because from them we learn. Discipline is important from everyone especially when you need help from the people around you like I need money to pay for school bills.
when I earn my degree in Nursing, I want to be able to travel to far places deep in villages to help those people who have no access to hospitals or any form of medical care because i once lived in such areas and know how hard it is to live in such conditions. When I lived with my grandmother in Uganda, before we got the opportunity to move to a better place, the village was brutal in a sense that the nearest hospital was miles away and it took hours to get a sick person there because the transportation was terrible as well. This cost so many lives and some close to me,. i do not wish that pain I have felt on anyone else which is why i am in this profession to make the world a better place.
