Losinger Nursing Scholarship
1. My decision to pursue a career in nursing comes from my desire to help people in a hands-on, meaningful way. Growing up, I saw how important nurses were in keeping families calm, informed, and supported during stressful medical moments. Whether it was during a relative’s hospital stay or a routine visit, the nurse was always the person who made everything feel a little easier. Watching that made me realize how powerful it is to be the person a patient can trust.
Nursing also inspires me because it is a career built on compassion and purpose. I have always been drawn to roles where I can be useful and supportive, especially when someone is scared or unsure. The idea of being able to comfort a patient, explain something clearly, or simply be present for them is very meaningful to me. I want a career where I can make a real difference every day, and nursing allows me to do that.
Another inspiration for me is the opportunity to continue learning. Healthcare is always changing, and nurses grow through every experience, every patient, and every challenge. I like the idea of a career where I can develop new skills while still maintaining a strong, personal connection with the people I care for.
Overall, I chose nursing because it connects my strengths, my values, and my desire to serve. Nurses impact people’s lives in ways that stay with them long after they leave the hospital, and I want to be part of that kind of meaningful work.
2. To me, the phrase “human touch” means genuine connection, empathy, and presence. It is the kindness, understanding, and compassion we show one another—especially during vulnerable moments. “Human touch” is not only physical touch, like holding a patient’s hand, but also emotional touch, such as listening without rushing, speaking gently, or making someone feel seen and valued. It is the personal side of healthcare that reminds patients they are more than their illness or diagnosis.
In patient care, the “human touch” can make a powerful difference. When someone is in the hospital, they may feel scared, confused, or alone. A nurse who takes the time to sit with a patient, explain what is happening, or simply offer reassurance can lower anxiety and build trust. This trust helps patients feel safer and more willing to communicate, which leads to better care and better outcomes.
Human touch also helps patients feel respected. Something as simple as remembering a patient’s name, asking how they are feeling, or noticing when they seem uncomfortable shows them that their nurse truly cares. These small moments can change how a patient experiences their entire stay. It turns a stressful time into one where they feel supported and understood.
Emotionally, the human touch reminds patients that they are not facing their situation alone. Physically, gentle touch can provide comfort, reduce tension, and help patients relax. Even non-verbal communication—eye contact, a warm tone, or a patient-centered approach—can help someone feel safe.
For nurses, using the human touch is part of advocating for the patient. It allows us to see their needs beyond the medical chart and respond to them as a whole person. When nurses care with both skill and compassion, patients feel hope, strength, and dignity.
Overall, “human touch” is at the heart of nursing. It brings humanity into healthcare and makes healing truly possible.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
The top three songs I resonate with so deeply by Billie are Getting Older, Ocean Eyes, What was I Made for. These songs are relatable and put me at a peace I've never felt before from any other song. Getting older is scary and the first song I picked is all about how I will have to experience life by myself with all these new responsibilities. Ocean Eyes is just a very beautiful song and it reminds me of my eyes because they have a mix of blue, green, and shine so bright. What I was I made for also resonates so deeply with me because I question what I was made for in some instances and it's melody and beat is so angelic it just puts me at peace with myself and my negative thoughts. All of these songs have these beautiful melodies and the chorus is perfect I could listen to them all day! I love her songs and the vibe she immits to others and the passion she puts into her work I hear in any of her songs. Billie has helped me through hard times in my life and that seems very cliche to say but I have changed from these songs and cannot express enough how much peace and happiness I have developed from her music.
