Bio

I am Jotham Billy and I want to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ in worship and song through playing the drums. I desire to grow and learn in my craft, spiritual life, and in my career. One of my greatest motivators is providing for my future wife and leading her in a biblical marriage. Being a man is a requirement for me, not an option. Whatever I have to do now to better prepare me for doing life with another woman I will do. I need to be self sufficient, and financially able to take care of her. I believe college will provide me the best opportunities and skills to do that. Drumming is what I do. To be a Godly man, lead my wife, and provide for her needs doing what I love, that’s a life well lived in my eyes. What greater honor, to serve the Lord and serve your family for your whole life. Truthfully I don’t do a lot of things. I wake up, read my Bible, go to school, extracurriculars, come home and prepare for the next day, practice, pray, sleep, repeat. There are some nuances in those facets of my life that I won’t go into now. But I strongly believe in discipline and stoicism. How am I supposed to get anywhere in my life with no discipline or emotional self control? How can I be strong for my wife if I flip out at the slightest challenge? I must harden myself and grow up. Which is the reason I impose such discipline on myself. I see it as preparing myself for life. I understand I’ll never be able to prepare for everything but something is better than nothing as I always say. Well, that’s me! I’m out here doing the best I can, what more could you ask?

Heart’s Labrynth In the vibrant world of "Love Island," challenges serve not only as a source of entertainment but also as a means to test the relationships and dynamics among contestants. To invigorate the show with a fresh and engaging experience, the new challenge, "Heart's Labyrinth," is designed to test the emotional and strategic compatibility of the couples in a captivating way. This challenge combines physical navigation, teamwork, and emotional revelations to create an immersive and revealing experience for both participants and viewers. Challenge Overview: "Heart's Labyrinth" is a multi-faceted challenge set within an intricately designed maze constructed on the island. The labyrinth is divided into several thematic sections, each representing different facets of a romantic relationship. Couples must navigate through these sections, complete various tasks, and ultimately reach the heart of the maze, symbolizing the depth and strength of their connection. Labyrinth Design and Structure: The labyrinth is composed of five distinct sections, each themed around a crucial aspect of relationships: Communication Corner: In this section, couples encounter a series of puzzles and riddles that can only be solved through effective communication and collaboration. This area tests their ability to work together under pressure and interpret each other's thoughts and cues. Trust Tunnel: Here, one partner is blindfolded while the other must guide them through a narrow, winding passage using only verbal instructions. This section is designed to challenge the level of trust and reliance between the partners. Affection Arena: Couples face a series of physical and emotional tasks that require them to demonstrate their affection and support for one another. This could include synchronized dance routines or creating a collaborative art piece that reflects their relationship. Conflict Cave: In this area, couples must confront hypothetical relationship challenges and work through them by discussing and resolving hypothetical conflicts. This section tests their problem-solving skills and emotional maturity. Commitment Chamber: The final section involves a reflective activity where couples answer a series of questions about their future together. They must articulate their visions, aspirations, and fears in front of the other contestants, highlighting their level of commitment and understanding of each other’s long-term goals. Execution and Rules: Timed Navigation: Couples are given a set time limit to complete each section of the maze. If they fail to complete a section within the allotted time, they face a small penalty and must return to the beginning of that section. Task Completion: Each section has a designated task that must be completed to progress. These tasks are designed to be both fun and challenging, requiring a balance of physical skill and emotional insight. Judging and Scoring: A panel of judges, consisting of previous islanders and relationship experts, evaluates the couples' performances based on criteria such as teamwork, communication, and emotional depth. Scores are awarded for both task completion and the quality of interactions within each section. Revelations and Reflections: After completing the maze, couples have the opportunity to reflect on their experience in front of the group. They share insights gained from the challenge and discuss how it has impacted their perception of each other and their relationship. Conclusion: "Heart's Labyrinth" offers a compelling new dimension to the "Love Island" experience by integrating physical, emotional, and strategic elements into a single challenge. This innovative format not only entertains but also provides valuable insights into the dynamics of the couples, making it a memorable and revealing addition to the show. By navigating through the maze, contestants have the chance to showcase and strengthen their relationships, offering viewers a deeper understanding of the complexities and joys of romance.

A Journey of Loss and Growth As I embarked on the threshold of my senior year of High School, I found myself in contemplation, charting a path illuminated by faith and steered by a desire to glorify God. My dream is to be a professional drummer who plays for churches or a Christian band. I desire to provide for my family and magnify the Lord while doing so. This aspiration lies in my personal journey, most notably shaped by the poignant loss of my grandmother. Her passing prompted a profound exploration of grief, a traverse through sorrow, yet paradoxically, an initiation into resilience and the power of faith. Grounded in my Christian beliefs, I internalized the imperative to trust in God's plan even during arduous circumstances. My grandmother's departure became a crucible for my character, instilling a resilience that transcends the emotional tumult of loss. Her death taught me to control my emotions, and I realized the importance of retaining agency over my actions. Life would not pause for my grief; responsibilities beckoned, demanding my attention irrespective of the poignant sadness enveloping me. This lesson became the cornerstone of my journey toward my dream of becoming a professional drummer. In a world teeming with uncertainty and challenges, controlling one's emotions is a vital skill. The impact of mastering emotional control extends seamlessly into the realm of music. As a drummer, I grapple with the demands of a profession that requires not only technical prowess but also a profound emotional intelligence. The cadence of life may be unpredictable, yet my commitment to the faith and music endures, echoing the lessons learned from great loss. This emotional mastery, forged in the fires of tribulation, becomes my anchor, enabling me to navigate the landscapes of music with poise. Whether orchestrating the rhythm of worship or accompanying the somber notes of a memorial, my emotional resilience serves as a steadfast foundation. Life's unpredictability become preludes to opportunities for artistic expression and spiritual connection. In the crucible of loss, the symphony of my emotions harmonizes with the rhythm of life, and the conductor within me emerges—a drummer ready to face the crescendos and decrescendos with unwavering readiness. The ability to manage emotions stands as a testament to my unwavering commitment to both faith and music, a melodic intertwining that paints the canvas of my dreams. In conclusion, my journey as a senior navigating the realms of faith and music is indelibly marked by the crucible of significant loss. In the journey of personal development, two books have profoundly influenced my perspective: "The Obstacle is the Way" by Ryan Holiday and "The Way of The Superior Man" by David Deida. Each offers unique insights that have not only shaped my worldview but also influenced my approach to setting and achieving goals. Ryan Holiday’s book draws upon the philosophy of Stoicism to present a framework for overcoming obstacles and turning adversity into advantage. One of the key lessons from the book is the idea of perception and how we interpret the challenges we face. Holiday argues that it’s not the obstacle itself but our perception of it that determines our success or failure. This concept has taught me the importance of maintaining a calm mindset when encountering difficulties. Moreover, Holiday emphasizes the power of action in the face of obstacles. Instead of being paralyzed by setbacks, he advocates for problem-solving and viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth. This principle reshaped how I approach challenges in my daily life. Rather than seeing setbacks as roadblocks, I now see them as chances to learn, and improve. Another significant takeaway from "The Obstacle is the Way" is the idea of persistence and resilience. Holiday illustrates through historical examples that many great leaders achieved success not in spite of their challenges, but because of them. This has encouraged me to embrace difficulties as part of my journey toward achieving my goals. David Deida’s book offers an equally impactful perspective on personal growth, focusing on the challenges and opportunities within relationships. One of the central themes of the book is the concept of masculine and feminine energies and how balancing these energies can lead to deeper fulfillment in life. His teachings have highlighted the importance of authenticity and clarity of purpose. He emphasizes that true fulfillment comes from living in alignment with one’s deepest purpose and values. This has prompted me to reflect deeply on what truly matters to me and to align my goals with my core values and aspirations. Furthermore, "The Way of The Superior Man" underscores the importance of embracing discomfort and uncertainty as catalysts for growth. Deida argues that avoiding discomfort leads to stagnation, whereas embracing challenges fosters personal evolution and resilience. This perspective has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, take calculated risks, and pursue ambitious goals that align with my purpose. Both books have played a crucial role in shaping my goals by providing practical wisdom and philosophical insights. From "The Obstacle is the Way," I have learned the importance of resilience, proactive problem-solving, and maintaining a positive mindset in the face of adversity. These lessons have empowered me to set ambitious goals without fear of failure, knowing that setbacks are opportunities for growth. From "The Way of The Superior Man," I have gained a deeper understanding of personal authenticity, purpose-driven living, and the importance of balanced growth in relationships and personal development. These insights have guided me in setting goals that not only align with my professional aspirations but also resonate with my values and contribute to my overall sense of fulfillment. In conclusion, "The Obstacle is the Way" and "The Way of The Superior Man" have been invaluable guides in my journey of personal growth and goal-setting. They have equipped me with the mindset, strategies, and philosophical foundations necessary to overcome challenges, pursue ambitious goals, and live a purposeful life aligned with my deepest values. As I continue to apply these teachings in my daily life, I am confident that they will continue to shape and enrich my journey toward personal and professional success.

The Greatest Trilogy I’ve Ever Watched One of my favorite book-to-film adaptations is "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. As a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novels, this cinematic interpretation holds a special place in my heart due to its meticulous attention to detail, its faithful adaptation of the source material, and its ability to enhance the storytelling through visual and auditory means. Firstly, what makes "The Lord of the Rings" films so special to me is their commitment to capturing the essence of Tolkien's richly imagined world of Middle-earth. From the sprawling landscapes of New Zealand standing in for the varied terrains of Middle-earth to the intricate designs of armor, weaponry, and creatures, every aspect of the films was crafted with a deep respect for the original text. As a viewer, seeing the vivid descriptions from the books come to life on screen was immensely satisfying and transported me directly into the heart of the adventure. Moreover, the adaptation successfully navigated the challenges of condensing Tolkien's expansive narrative into a manageable film format without sacrificing its core themes or characters. Characters like Frodo, Samwise, Aragorn, and Gandalf were brought to life with memorable performances that added depth and emotion to their literary counterparts. This bridging of literature and cinema allowed me to deepen my understanding of the characters beyond what the books provided, as nuances of expression and emotion were visually portrayed by talented actors. The trilogy's success in bridging the gap between reading and viewing experiences lies in its ability to complement rather than replace the original text. Watching the films expanded my appreciation for Tolkien's storytelling while also introducing the narrative to those who might not have read the books. It sparked conversations about the differences between the literary and cinematic mediums, encouraging exploration of both forms of storytelling. Additionally, the films' musical score by Howard Shore played a crucial role in enhancing the emotional impact of key scenes. The leitmotifs associated with different characters and locations created a cohesive audio-visual experience that resonated with audiences worldwide. Hearing the familiar strains of the Shire theme or the haunting melody of the Ring's allure added another layer of depth to the story, further enriching the overall experience. Lastly, "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy remains special to me because of its enduring legacy and influence on both cinema and popular culture. It set a benchmark for what a successful adaptation can achieve when done with care, respect, and attention to detail. The films inspired a new generation of fantasy enthusiasts and continue to be celebrated for their technical achievements and storytelling prowess. In conclusion, "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy stands out as my favorite book-to-film adaptation because it seamlessly bridged the gap between reading and viewing experiences. It brought Tolkien's beloved world to life in a way that honored the source material while also pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. Through its visual splendor, memorable performances, and evocative score, the trilogy remains a testament to the power of adaptation in capturing the hearts and imaginations of audiences around the globe.

Pursuing What I Love Why pursue something that doesn’t excite you? All my life I’ve wanted a pursuit that would not only captivate me but also challenge me. This quest led me to discover my passion for music, particularly playing the drums, igniting within me a desire to be a full-time musician. While it may entail risks and the possibility of failure, the thought of not pursuing what truly excites me seems like a compromise of my essence. To me, that's not living—it's merely existing. My name is Jotham Billy, and I consider myself a multifaceted individual with a range of interests that have evolved over time. From construction to art, from soccer to music, my journey has been marked by exploration. I've always harbored a competitive spirit driven by a fierce desire to succeed. Although I tend to be introverted, I find myself being more extroverted around familiar faces. This inclination towards solitude has endowed me with keen powers of observation, allowing me to discern the subtleties of life. Moreover, I am inherently goal-driven, meticulously crafting schedules and adhering to disciplined routines. Recognizing the brevity of life, I am committed to pursuing endeavors that hold significance and promise fulfillment. The pursuit of my goals requires dedication and effort, prompting me to seize the present rather than defer my aspirations until later stages in life. Despite trying various hobbies, none have resonated with me as profoundly as music. Over the past decade, playing the drums has remained a constant source of fervor and satisfaction. While there are more lucrative career paths, I believe that true wealth lies in pursuing one's passions, as exemplified by the adage, "a man who works for passion is richer than a man who works for money,” The Karate Kid. While I am not basing my career solely on a line from an action movie, there’s truth to that. Countless individuals find themselves financially successful yet unfulfilled in their professions. I refuse to sacrifice my happiness for the sake of financial security. Despite the challenges inherent in the music industry, I am prepared to embrace the risks in pursuit of a career that brings me joy. Having expressed my commitment to music, It won’t surprise you that I’m pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Modern Music, with a focus on the drum set. This degree will equip me with the necessary skills to thrive in the music industry. By studying music theory and mastering additional instruments, I’ll be a very well-rounded musician. This scholarship will help me attend college and get closer to my dream of being a full-time musician. It’ll also help me avoid crippling student-loan debt that I’m desperately trying to avoid, so thank you for this opportunity! Transitioning from high school to college prompts introspection regarding the trajectory of my life. In a world marked by uncertainty and increasing responsibilities, why would I choose to pursue a career in an unpredictable industry? The answer lies in my love for music and my belief that I can succeed in the face of adversity. For me, the pursuit of my dream is worth any potential setbacks or challenges. I would rather live with the knowledge that I pursued my passion, even if it eludes me, than wonder what could have been if I had tried. Ultimately, it's about embracing the journey, with all its uncertainties and risks, in pursuit of a life filled with meaning and fulfillment. Each step I take towards my musical aspirations brings me closer to realizing my fullest potential and living a life that resonates with purpose.

Pursuing What I Love Why pursue something that doesn’t excite you? All my life I’ve wanted something to pursue, something to improve in that was exhilarating. I’ve found that in music, specifically, playing the drums. I long to have a career as a musician. I can’t fathom doing anything else. Yes it’s risky, of course I could fail. But why pursue something that doesn’t excite me? That’s not living if you ask me. My name is Jotham Billy and I consider myself to be quite a multifaceted individual. My interests have changed from construction, to art, to soccer, and of course, to music. I’ve always been competitive, sometimes wanting to win so badly I scream out of passion. I tend to be introverted, only exiting my shell when I’m near people I’m familiar with. Due to my seclusion, I tend to be more observant, noticing the little details in life. I’m also extremely goal driven. I make schedules for myself, and I’m very disciplined. I’ve realized that life is short and I want to achieve something worthwhile. Getting there takes work. So I may as well chase my goals now instead of waiting until my life is halfway over to get serious about what I want to do. I’ve tried hobby after hobby, and nothing’s stuck with me like music. I’ve played drums for almost ten years and it still gives me that same fervor even now. I know there’s other career paths that make more, but “a man who works for passion is richer than a man who works for money” - The Karate Kid. Now, I’m not basing my career off a line in an action movie. But the statement has some truth to it. How many people have you heard of that go into a field that has lots of money in it, but they’re not satisfied in their job? I knew I didn’t want to be successful but hate the work I do. I’m well aware of how hard it is to make it in the music industry. But I’m willing to risk that to have a career that I love. I’ve said a lot about music and why I’m pursuing it, but what will I be studying in college? I’ve alluded to it, but I’ll be studying the drum-set and I’ll be earning a Bachelor’s in Modern Music. This degree will prepare me for an expansive career in the music industry. I’ll be taught how to read music, and play instruments besides the drum set so I’m well rounded. Going to college will grow me as a person and as a musician, and I’m looking forward to it! This transition from High School to College forces me to ask a hard question: what am I going to do with the next portion of my life? There’s multiple ways to answer that question, and with inconsistent economies, and increasing responsibilities, why would I choose to pursue an inconsistent, dense industry? Simply because I love it, and I believe I can make it in the music industry. I know what you’re thinking, “that’s risky,” “just get a steady job.” To that I say, I know I could be wrong. Maybe I won’t make it and I’ll have spent 10 to 20 years of my life trying something that isn’t for me. But that’s okay, because I’d rather live knowing that I went for my dream and didn’t achieve it, than wonder how far I could’ve gotten if I had tried.

For me, "Steins;Gate" will always hold a special place in my heart, reminding me of the endless possibilities of storytelling and the profound impact that anime can have on our lives.

From Passion to Purpose The arts have always held a special place in my heart, serving as a profound means of expression and a powerful conduit for spreading messages that resonate universally. Among the various art forms, music, in particular, has been a source of immense fascination for me. The ability of notes and harmonies to evoke a spectrum of emotions, from tears to joy, is a testament to the profound impact that music can have on the human spirit. My journey into the world of arts commenced nine years ago, at the tender age of eight. It was a gift from my mom that set the stage for my deep involvement in music – a small drum set that would unknowingly become the catalyst for a lifelong passion. From the moment I first laid hands on those drumsticks, I felt an inexplicable connection to the rhythmic beats and melodic cadences that unfolded before me. Little did I know that this humble gift would mark the beginning of a transformative journey through the arts. Music, for me, transcends mere entertainment; it serves as a powerful medium through which I can communicate my innermost thoughts and emotions. Each beat, every note, becomes an extension of my being, allowing me to express what words alone may fail to convey. The transformative impact of the arts on my life has been profound, shaping not only my identity but also influencing the way I perceive and interact with the world around me. As the years unfolded, my passion for music deepened, evolving beyond a mere hobby into a calling. The decision to pursue a career in the arts was a natural progression, fueled by a profound desire to utilize my musical talent in service of something greater than myself. For me, that greater purpose is rooted in my Christian faith. The decision to dedicate my artistic endeavors to leading worship is a conscious choice to use my talents for the glory of God. The prospect of leading a congregation in worship through music is a compelling and deeply meaningful goal. It aligns with my belief that the arts, particularly music, have the power to elevate the human spirit and create a shared experience that transcends individual differences. Music, in the context of worship, becomes a vehicle for communal expression, fostering a connection between individuals and their faith. In choosing the path of a career in the arts, driven by the aspiration to lead worship, I see it as an opportunity to give back the gift of music to the source from which all gifts originate. It is a profound way to express gratitude and devotion, utilizing the artistic talents bestowed upon me to create an atmosphere of worship that resonates with the hearts of those who gather. In conclusion, the arts, especially music, hold a unique and irreplaceable role in my life. They are a vehicle for self-expression, a medium for spreading messages, and, in my case, a calling to lead worship. From the modest beginnings of a small drum set to the aspirations of guiding a congregation in musical worship, my journey through the arts is a testament to the transformative power of creativity and the profound impact it can have on both individuals and communities alike.

A Journey of Loss and Growth As I embark on my senior year in high school, I find myself contemplating the path I wish to tread, a path that has been illuminated to me by faith and guided by a desire to glorify God. My dream is to be a professional drummer for a church or Christian band and use that to provide for my family and glorify God. This aspiration has been deeply shaped by my personal journey, especially by the loss of my beloved grandmother. The passing of my grandmother was a turning point in my life. It was a moment when I had to grapple with grief and sorrow, but it was also a lesson in resilience and the power of faith. As a Christian, I've been taught that I am called to trust in God's plan even when faced with the most challenging circumstances. The ability to manage my emotions allows me to remain steadfast in my faith and commitment to music.

Using My Talent to Serve God and the Church Ever since I can remember I've had a heart for music and helping the homeless. I used to bang on pots and pans when I was a baby, and when I got my first drum-set as a toddler I only made more noise. The less fortunate also piqued my interest. I would see people, and still do see people, on the side of the road or under bridges and always think to myself, "why do people just drive by them and rarely give them anything?" I didn't know, but I knew I wanted to help. When I got older and into my early teen years, I became a Christian and I knew even more so that giving to the less fortunate is incredibly important. But even while that was on my mind, as I began to mature, people poked me with questions on my interests or opportunities and the like. Those questions got me to think on what I wanted to do to make money and what I would do with that money. Throughout the years of pondering and trying to answer the question of what I would do to make a living, I went through multiple phases. I went from wanting to be a construction worker to a soccer player to a YouTuber, I may have even considered being an artist. But (long story short) I decided on being a drummer and using that skill to lead worship in Christian establishments. As I grew in my Christianity, I began to understand that using what I have for God is much more fulfilling and rewarding than any grand goal or dream I could think of for myself, even if I got paid less. I was able to experience that fulfillment of serving God through music at my second gig for a church's middle school summer camp, and it was fantastic. I then had a great revelation, not only could I make a living serving God and the church through music, but I could also use that money to help those that are less fortunate. Plus, I could help them at a greater degree because I'll have more resources to give! This revelation gave me a great sense of peace. It felt like I had finally discovered a career direction that was more than just how much money I'd make a year. This would be my goal I decided! A lifestyle that serves God, the less fortunate, and the church! I am looking forward to the future with great anticipation. Music can take you places you never thought you'd go. I just know that wherever I end up playing, there will be those in need. God will provide opportunities for me to not only tend to their physical need, but their spiritual need for Christ as well. God has brought me a long way to get to where I am now. There's been challenges but they've only grown me into the person that I am now. Sometimes I look back and can't believe I used to want to be a construction worker. But I'd much rather serve an incorruptible king and an incorruptible kingdom.

How Music Has Enriched My Life Throughout high school, music has been an integral part of my life, bringing positive experiences and leaving lasting memories. One of those being the blessing of being a part of the Singing Christmas Tree at my church—an annual musical production telling the story of Christ. This wasn't just about entertainment; it allowed me to express my faith and nurture friendships. The experience is incredibly surreal and it humbles me to know that I was fortunate enough to have that experience. Being involved in my church’s choir has been a great place to not only challenge me musically, but also to serve our church and others through music. We’ve sung for younger children and their families in needy neighborhoods and it was thoroughly fulfilling to serve in that way. These opportunities enriched my years in high school greatly. To serve others, grow through challenges, and hone my skill has been a great blessing that I don’t take for granted. Drumming in my church's worship band has also greatly affected me. I’ve grown in understanding of what it means to lead worship and the practical aspects of what goes on to plan a worship set. Not only that but I’ve become more cooperative due to working with other musicians and rehearsing with them. I’m grateful for the privilege of having multiple opportunities to lead worship for our high school ministry and a Sunday night service at our church. Without these experiences, I wouldn’t be the musician I am today. Senior year brought a new chapter with my enrollment in the STAX Music Academy. Here, I delved deeper into sight reading and music theory. The structured learning and mentorship not only refined my skills but also provided unique opportunities, such as performing at an Inauguration. There’s pressure to perform though. Opportunities like that aren’t handed to anyone. I’ve learned to overcome being nervous before or during a performance and that’s increased my confidence not only as a musician, but as a person. Also, thanks to STAX, I was able to attend a Justin Timberlake concert for free, which was an unforgettable experience. It was a fantastic concert, but I was also able to experience genuine camaraderie with the other students and the instructors. Which increased my connection with those around me and the organization itself. These moments, from significant performances to enjoying an excellent concert, became cherished memories that defined my senior year. Looking back, music has had a profound impact on my life and has taken me places I thought I’d never go. It’s contributed to my personal growth, skill development, and has brought great blessings into my life. Whether it’s the Singing Christmas Tree, choir, worship band, or STAX, each musical experience added a unique flavor to my high school journey. To have experienced so much at a young age makes me incredibly grateful, and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me.

Serving The Needy on Christmas Participating in the MIFA event to bring meals to a needy neighborhood on Christmas of 2021 was a profoundly moving experience that carried a unique significance against the backdrop of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As I joined the team of volunteers at the crack of dawn, there was a sense of both festive anticipation and the sobering reality that the pandemic had intensified the struggles faced by many in the community. The impact of COVID-19 was evident in the faces of the residents we encountered. The once-vibrant neighborhood now bore the weight of economic challenges, compounded by the health crisis. Unemployment rates had surged, and the need for basic necessities, including food, had escalated. As we prepared to distribute meals, the significance of our mission resonated deeply — we weren't just bringing holiday cheer; we were providing sustenance and a momentary respite from the hardships exacerbated by the pandemic. The event's logistics were adapted to adhere to safety protocols, reflecting the newfound normalcy brought about by the virus. Volunteers donned masks and maintained social distancing, a stark reminder that the world we lived in had changed. The pandemic had not only shifted the way we interact but had heightened the importance of community support, especially during holidays when the isolation felt by many was intensified. The meals, carefully curated by MIFA, included not only nourishing food but also messages of hope and solidarity. Each package was a symbol of collective resilience in the face of adversity, a reminder that, even in challenging times, communities could come together to spread warmth and goodwill. As we navigated the neighborhood, the act of delivering meals became a connection point, a bridge between those fortunate enough to volunteer and those struggling to make ends meet. Conversations with residents, though masked and socially distanced, revealed the depth of their challenges. Many spoke of the isolating effects of the pandemic, of loved ones lost, and of financial hardships that seemed insurmountable. The charity event, however, became a beacon of light amid the darkness. It exemplified the power of compassionate action, illustrating that even in the face of a global crisis, individuals could make a tangible difference in the lives of others. MIFA's commitment to inclusivity and inter-faith cooperation added a layer of richness to the event. Volunteers, representing various faiths and backgrounds, came together to serve a common purpose. It showcased the resilience of the human spirit and the ability to transcend differences when faced with a shared goal — in this case, bringing joy to a community grappling with the harsh realities of a pandemic-altered world. As we concluded the event and returned to the MIFA headquarters, the impact of our collective efforts lingered. The meal distribution wasn't just a charitable act; it was a testament to the enduring strength of community bonds. In the face of adversity, the spirit of giving and compassion proved resilient, reminding us all that, even during a pandemic, the warmth of human connection and the joy of helping others could illuminate even the darkest corners. Participating in the MIFA event on that Christmas was a poignant reminder that, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, the human spirit remains resilient. The experience underscored the significance of community support, especially during holidays, and left an indelible mark on my understanding of the transformative power of collective compassion.

Grit and Goals As a high school senior with a deep passion for drumming, my goal is not merely to become a professional drummer but to utilize my musical talent to serve God and the church. This aspiration has been the driving force behind my commitment to honing my skills through drumming classes, active participation in worship bands, and disciplined practice at home, including reading and playing sheet music. My journey into the world of drumming began with an earnest desire to use my God-given talent in a meaningful way. Recognizing the importance of formal education in music, I enrolled in drumming classes to refine my technique, enhance my feel, and develop a better understanding of music theory. These classes not only provided me with a technical foundation but also introduced me to different musical styles and genres, broadening my musical palette. Playing in worship bands has been a transformative experience, allowing me to merge my musical passion with my faith. Having a better understanding of what I do has been crucial in expanding the way I view worship and playing what’s appropriate for the various musical arrangements within the church. My practice routine is not just about perfecting beats; it's about mastering the language through which I can communicate and elevate the worship experience. Despite my unwavering commitment to my musical goals, the journey has not been without its challenges. Balancing the demands of high school responsibilities, including academics and extracurricular activities, with the rigorous college application process has been a significant hurdle. Managing time effectively has become a crucial skill as I strive to maintain excellence in my studies while pursuing my dream of being a professional drummer, and giving my talent back for the church. With there being so many choices, searching for a college that will get me closer to achieving my dream has been difficult. It’s demanded meticulous planning and organization. Especially when it comes to navigating scholarship opportunities, audition requirements, and campus visits. It’s undoubtedly been a test of my resilience and has made me stronger and more prepared for college. Regardless of these challenges, I am fueled by the belief that my dedication to both academic and musical pursuits will open doors to institutions that align with my aspirations. In conclusion, my journey as a high school senior aspiring to become a professional drummer with a mission to serve God and the church has been marked by intentional learning, active participation in worship bands, and disciplined practice. Little did I know that this humble gift would mark the beginning of a transformative journey through the arts. The decision to pursue a career in the arts was a natural progression, fueled by a profound desire to utilize my musical talent in service of something greater than myself. My Dream Of Being A Full Time Musician As a high school senior with a passion for drumming and christian music, my dream is to serve God and the church through my drumming. The path to success in the music industry is often described as abstract, with no set blueprint to achieve the dream of playing for a living. Recognizing this, I am determined to take strategic steps to carve out my place in this competitive field. One crucial decision in my journey is the choice of a college that aligns with my aspirations. In my pursuit of being a full time musician, I love the idea of attending a private Christian college. Drumming for the Glory of God: A Journey of Loss and Growth As I embark on my senior year in high school, I find myself contemplating the path I wish to tread, a path that has been illuminated to me by faith and guided by a desire to glorify God. It was during this time that I learned not to let my emotions take control of my actions. Serving Christ Through Drumming As I stand on the brink of graduation, the world beyond high school beckons with its infinite possibilities. For me, this journey is not just about acquiring a diploma, but also a calling to serve Christ in churches and Christian bands through drumming. My passion for music and my experiences as part of the worship band have ignited a fire within me that propels me forward with unwavering purpose. Drumming, for me, is not just a hobby or a skill; it is a gift that I intend to use to glorify Christ. I've been playing the drums since I was a child, but it was during my years in high school that my passion for drumming and music blossomed. As I grew in my faith, I realized that music could be a powerful instrument to serve the Lord. This revelation has shaped my aspirations and my commitment to using my talent for a higher purpose. Music has brought me closer to friends who share my faith and love for music. The bond we've formed through our involvement in the church's worship band is unique and profoundly spiritual. We not only create melodies but also strengthen our faith and friendships. Our music is a means through which we connect with each other and with God. These friendships have become an essential part of my life, offering support, encouragement, and a shared sense of purpose. The worship band experience has been transformative. As a drummer, I've learned that my role goes beyond simply keeping time. I have a crucial responsibility in guiding the congregation's worship experience. The beat I provide sets the pace for prayers, hymns, and moments of reflection. This responsibility is both humbling and empowering, reminding me that my drumming is a form of ministry. My passion for music is driven by the belief that there is always more to learn and apply to how I play. The world of drumming is vast, with countless techniques, styles, and rhythms waiting to be explored. I see this as an opportunity to grow not just as a musician, but also as a servant of Christ. My goal is to continue honing my skills, always seeking to improve and refine my drumming to serve the Lord more effectively. Beyond the walls of the church, I aspire to join Christian bands that share the same devotion to spreading the message of faith through music. The rich musical history of our city profoundly influences our church culture. Music transcends the boundaries of performance, all the way to becoming a channel for spiritual expression. My decision to pursue drumming for worship came with its own set of challenges. It was paramount to me that I did not succumb to the desire for recognition or fame, but rather remained rooted in the belief that my talent was a divine gift, meant to be used exclusively for His glory. As my drumming skills continued to develop, I discovered that my musical journey aligned seamlessly with biblical principles. Colossians 3:23-24 served as a guiding light: "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men." Losing my grandmother during high school was a profound and life-changing experience. Her sudden departure left me with a heavy heart, but through a series of steps, I learned to cope with grief and honor her memory. First and foremost, I had to acknowledge my grief. Suppressing the emotions welling up inside me was not an option. I allowed myself to cry, often uncontrollably, realizing that mourning was a natural and essential process in dealing with loss. As I navigated the initial shock, I turned to memories for solace. Hours were spent flipping through old photo albums, revisiting cherished moments with my grandmother. Her laughter, her comforting presence, and the countless stories she shared became a lifeline. It was as though she was still with me, whispering words of love and encouragement. Another crucial aspect of my healing process was seeking support from family and friends. I had always been someone who kept my emotions close to the chest, but I soon realized that sharing my pain with loved ones was essential. They became my pillars of strength, offering a shoulder to cry on and a listening ear. Their empathy and understanding provided a sense of belonging and comfort during a time of immense sorrow. Despite the support, the absence of my grandmother was deeply felt in my daily life. Her favorite recipes, the stories she told, and her warm embrace were now poignant memories. The realization that I would never again hear her voice or receive her loving advice was a constant ache in my heart. To honor her memory and cope with the void she left behind, I decided to channel my grief into something meaningful. I started a journal to document my thoughts and emotions. Writing became my sanctuary, a space where I could pour out my feelings and reflect on the profound impact my grandmother had on my life. Through words, I could keep her memory alive. In time, I also discovered the power of rituals and traditions. My grandmother had cherished family gatherings and celebrations, and it was in continuing these traditions that I felt closest to her. We lit a candle in her memory during special occasions, and it became a symbol of her enduring presence in our lives. These rituals provided a sense of connection and comfort, bridging the gap between her physical absence and the warmth of her memory. As I moved forward with my high school life, I realized that my grandmother's lessons and values had become an integral part of who I was. She had instilled in me the importance of resilience, kindness, and the pursuit of my dreams. Her wisdom continued to guide me, and I drew strength from the knowledge that she believed in my potential. Graduating from high school will be a poignant moment, one that I wish she will be here to see. While her absence will be deeply felt, her legacy of love and determination will push me forward. I know the wisdom she passed down will help me pursue my dreams with dedication and perseverance, just like she would’ve wanted me to. In conclusion, overcoming the grief of losing my grandmother during high school was a challenging but transformative journey. It required me to acknowledge my pain, seek support, cherish memories, and find meaning in her absence. My daily life was forever altered, but her love and wisdom continued to shape me. My grandmother's passing taught me that even in the face of loss, we can find strength, resilience, and a deeper appreciation for the love that remains.

Growing Up In Memphis As a senior who’s spent their whole life in inner Memphis, I've witnessed the city's transformation over the years. It's been a journey marked by challenges and triumphs, a journey that has shaped me in ways I could never have imagined. In this essay, I will share my experiences and reflect on the challenges I've faced while living in inner Memphis, as well as how I've overcome them. One of the most prominent challenges of living in inner Memphis has been the issue of crime and safety. Inner Memphis has a reputation for high crime rates, and over the years, I've had my fair share of encounters with this dark aspect of city life. It's not easy to ignore the constant news of shootings and robberies in our neighborhoods. For a senior like me, safety is a primary concern. However, I've learned to navigate this challenge by staying vigilant and adopting a range of safety measures. This includes being aware of my surroundings, avoiding high-risk areas after dark, and forming strong bonds with my neighbors, who act as an informal support network. Another significant challenge in inner Memphis is access to quality healthcare. This is especially crucial for seniors like me, as health issues become more prevalent with age. Over the years, I've seen healthcare facilities come and go, and some of them have struggled to provide consistent, high-quality care. To overcome this challenge, I've developed a strong relationship with a primary care physician who understands my medical history and needs. I've also relied on local community health clinics, which have been a valuable resource for affordable healthcare services. One of the remarkable things about inner Memphis is its rich cultural heritage. This city has a vibrant music scene, with the blues and soul music deeply rooted in its history. However, as a senior, I've faced the challenge of seeing some of these cultural landmarks and venues close down or struggle to survive. The changing landscape of the city has posed a threat to the cultural fabric that defines Memphis. To combat this, I've actively supported local artists and musicians by attending concerts and events, purchasing their work, and advocating for the preservation of historical sites and venues. Education is another challenge that many residents of inner Memphis face. The public school system in the city has had its fair share of issues, including funding shortages and disparities in educational outcomes. As a senior, I've taken it upon myself to mentor and support local students, volunteering my time to tutor and advocate for improved educational opportunities. I believe that education is the key to breaking cycles of poverty and crime, and I've seen firsthand the positive impact it can have on the lives of young people in our community. One of the most profound challenges I've faced in inner Memphis is the loss of friends and loved ones due to violence and health issues. The pain of saying goodbye to those who were part of the fabric of this city is indescribable. To overcome this challenge, I've sought solace in the tight-knit communities that exist within inner Memphis. We come together to support one another during times of grief, celebrating the lives of those we've lost while finding strength in our shared experiences. Despite these challenges, living in inner Memphis has also brought incredible moments of joy and resilience. The city's rich history, cultural diversity, and strong sense of community have provided a unique backdrop for my senior years. I've celebrated the triumphs of the Memphis Grizzlies, reveled in the sounds of Beale Street, and marveled at the beauty of the Mississippi River. In conclusion, my journey as a senior living in inner Memphis has been marked by both challenges and triumphs. From concerns about safety to access to quality healthcare, I've learned to navigate these obstacles through vigilance, community support, and advocacy. I've also embraced the cultural richness of the city, actively working to preserve its heritage. Inner Memphis has been my home, and I wouldn't trade the experiences and relationships I've formed here for anything. It's a place where resilience and hope shine bright, and where the bonds of community run deep.

Pedaling Toward Change: My Journey into the Cycling Community and Roadway Reform As I stand on the brink of adulthood, ready to graduate from high school and embark on the next chapter of my life, I find myself reflecting on the passions and interests that have shaped my formative years. One particular interest that has grown into a full-blown passion is my involvement in the cycling community. This passion not only stems from my love of biking but also from a deep-seated desire to address the challenges cyclists face on our roadways. As I prepare to pursue higher education, I am committed to leveraging my college experience to contribute to the much-needed improvement of our roadways for cyclists. My journey into the cycling community began innocently enough when I received my first bike as a birthday present in elementary school. What started as a simple pastime quickly evolved into a love affair with two-wheeled transportation. As I grew older, I began to understand the numerous benefits of cycling, both for individuals and the environment. Not only did it offer an exhilarating form of exercise, but it also provided an eco-friendly alternative to the fossil-fueled vehicles that congest our roads and contribute to pollution. However, my growing enthusiasm for cycling was soon met with the stark realities of our road infrastructure. The roads I traveled on were often dangerous and ill-equipped for cyclists. Narrow lanes, potholes, and insufficient bike lanes posed significant risks to riders like me. Tragic news stories of cycling accidents and fatalities further emphasized the urgency of improving road safety for cyclists. It became clear to me that I could not stand idly by, and I felt compelled to be part of the solution. In my senior year of high school, I decided to take action. I joined local cycling advocacy groups and began participating in community initiatives aimed at promoting cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transportation. These experiences allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals who shared my passion for improving roadways for cyclists. Together, we organized awareness campaigns, lobbied for safer infrastructure, and initiated dialogues with local authorities to address the pressing issues faced by cyclists. My involvement in the cycling community has not only deepened my appreciation for the power of collective action but has also inspired me to pursue a college education dedicated to making a lasting impact. I plan to major in Civil Engineering, with a focus on transportation infrastructure. Armed with the knowledge and skills gained in college, I hope to contribute to the design and implementation of cyclist-friendly roadways. One of my primary goals is to advocate for the inclusion of dedicated bike lanes and improved road design in urban planning projects. By collaborating with city planners, engineers, and local government officials, I aim to create safer environments for cyclists and encourage more people to embrace cycling as a sustainable means of transportation. Additionally, I intend to work on initiatives that promote education and awareness about cycling safety, ensuring that both drivers and cyclists understand their responsibilities on the road. In conclusion, my journey into the cycling community has ignited a passion for road safety and infrastructure improvement. As I journey into my college years, I aim to use my knowledge and skills to make a meaningful difference in the lives of cyclists and the broader community. By pursuing a Civil Engineering degree, I hope to contribute to the transformation of our roadways into safe, accessible, and cyclist-friendly networks. Together, we can pedal toward a brighter and more sustainable future for all road users.

Jotham Billy Lulu Scholarship for Music Vocation 8-19-23 The Woman Who Has Inspired Me To Pursue My Dreams Have you ever met or thought about a person that makes you want to become who you were meant to be? Someone that motivates you so intensely to succeed. So much so that you can’t form words to describe the effect this person has on you. They help you see that you have a purpose, and that you were made for more. They've unconsciously shown you your potential and you can’t wait to reach it. This woman has made me see that there’s more to life, there are good things waiting for me, I have much growing to do, and that the journey will be difficult but rewarding. This woman is my future wife. No, I don’t have a fiance and I haven’t met the person I’m going to marry yet (at least I don’t think I have;). But the idea of getting married is one of the most blessed and daunting things I’ve ever thought about. As the man in the relationship, it is my job to provide for her emotional, financial, caloric, and even spiritual needs. This monumental yet beautiful responsibility has made me determined to “put away childish things” if you will, and get to work. My dream is to be a worship drummer and use my talent to bring glory to God, and provide for my wife. But to be more personal this role I have as the man in the relationship goes much deeper than purely materially providing. I am a Christian, and as such, marriage is not only a devotion to the lady of whom I am marrying, but also to God. When I marry I am saying to her and more importantly to God that I will die to myself for the benefit of my wife each and every day. How could the reality of that commitment not inspire me to reach my dreams? I want my wife to have a home she loves to be in and come back to. Let’s be real, these things cost money, and usually a lot of it. Buying a house, a car, having an emergency fund, good insurance, paying bills, gas money, it adds up quickly. I don’t have to be the richest person on the planet, but I refuse to give my future wife anything less than my best. Not only do I want to provide for her, but I want to treat her with special gifts and outings. The last thing I want for her is to be so busy helping me provide for the household that by the end of the day, we’re both too tired to spend any time with each other. I want her to be able to relax, knowing that I’ve got things taken care of and she doesn’t have to stress about anything extra. The way I see it is this, I want to serve my wife in all the ways I can. How can I say I’m serving her but I’m not giving her all that she needs? I’d be a hypocrite, and that is not my best. Would it be nice if I became a superstar drummer? Sure. Would it be cool to be known worldwide for my talent? Yeah. But what does any of that matter? I’ll probably be dead in about 65 years. Why waste my life on temporary rewards? I want to use my degree to serve God and give myself a better chance at being able to provide for my wife. That reward is everlasting.
