Bio

My name is Josiah Rose and I am the youngest boy of seven children. Growing up, I was extremely active in sports and excelled in basketball and track & field, winning many awards along the way. After high school, I had multiple offers to play collegiate basketball but decided to take my talents to the Division III level for a year before becoming a team manager at California Baptist University for the Men's Basketball Team. When not playing or managing basketball, you can find me cooking or exploring other interests such as art, music and any other sport that catches my eye! As an athlete who has been around sports all his life it’s hard to be away from them completely so I like to stay involved with the game as much as possible. I am an ambitious and hardworking individual who looks to make the most of any opportunity that comes my way. With this scholarship, I will be able to attend college and continue learning about what makes me passionate in life. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Adversity has been a recurring theme in my life, but each challenge has helped shape me into the person I am today. One of the most significant adversities I faced was a motocross accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury and whiplash. This accident, one of five brain injuries I have endured, had a profound impact on my life. It not only affected my physical well-being but also took away my ability to speak several foreign languages I had learned, including Spanish, Hebrew, Russian, and American Sign Language. Additionally, I developed a slight stutter, which made communication even more difficult. At the time, I felt lost and disconnected. Losing my ability to communicate in languages I had invested so much time in mastering was a heavy blow. My confidence plummeted, and I struggled to come to terms with the physical and emotional consequences of the injury. However, I knew I had a choice: I could either let this adversity define me or find a way to rise above it. Overcoming Adversity The process of overcoming this challenge was not easy, but it taught me resilience and the importance of persistence. I began physical therapy and speech therapy to recover from the physical and cognitive effects of the injury. It was a slow and frustrating process, but I stayed determined. My faith as a Messianic Jew played a crucial role in my recovery, as it reminded me that challenges can be opportunities for growth and that I was not alone in my journey. With the support of my family and my belief in God's plan, I found the strength to keep pushing forward. As I regained my ability to communicate and learned to manage my stutter, I discovered a new sense of purpose. I realized that while I had lost certain abilities, I had gained a deeper understanding of resilience, empathy, and determination. These qualities have since become cornerstones of who I am and how I approach life. How Adversity Shaped Me This experience taught me the importance of embracing challenges and viewing them as opportunities for growth. It helped me develop a mindset of persistence and adaptability, which I have carried with me into my academic, personal, and professional life. The adversity I faced shaped me into a stronger, more compassionate individual who understands that setbacks do not define us but rather how we respond to them. Advice for Others Facing Similar Circumstances For someone facing similar circumstances, my advice would be to stay patient with yourself and trust the process. Recovery, whether physical, mental, or emotional, takes time, and it’s important not to rush it. Surround yourself with a supportive community—family, friends, or faith—and lean on them when things feel overwhelming. Most importantly, believe in your ability to overcome. You are stronger than you think, and with determination and persistence, you can turn adversity into an opportunity for growth. In conclusion, facing adversity has not only shaped my character but also inspired me to use my experiences to help and support others going through similar challenges.

Mental health has profoundly impacted my life, shaping my experiences, relationships, and aspirations. From my early teenage years, I have struggled with anxiety and depression, challenges that have significantly influenced my personal growth and outlook on life. These experiences have not only tested my resilience but also deepened my understanding of the importance of mental health awareness and support. My journey with mental health began during a particularly challenging period in my life. As one of seven siblings in a family facing financial instability and health issues, the pressure to support my family while excelling in academics and sports was immense. This stress manifested as anxiety and depression, making it difficult to navigate daily life and maintain a positive outlook. One of the most pivotal moments in my mental health journey was a motocross accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury and whiplash. This injury, one of five brain injuries I have endured, exacerbated my mental health struggles. The accident left me with a slight stutter and took away my ability to speak several foreign languages I had mastered, further compounding my anxiety and depression. Despite these setbacks, I was determined not to let my mental health define me. Through rigorous physical and speech therapy, prayer, and meditation, I worked tirelessly to regain my confidence and rebuild my communication skills. This process taught me the power of resilience and the importance of seeking help when needed. My experiences with anxiety and depression have significantly influenced my relationships and community involvement. They have taught me the value of empathy and understanding, as I know firsthand the challenges of living with mental health issues. This empathy has strengthened my relationships with family and friends, fostering deeper and more supportive connections. In my community, I have used my experiences to advocate for mental health awareness and support. Volunteering at my church and working with inner-city kids, I have shared my journey to inspire others facing similar challenges. By being open about my struggles, I aim to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage others to seek help and support. My mental health journey has also profoundly influenced my career aspirations. Pursuing a degree in sport management at California Baptist University, I hope to work in the NBA and eventually in wealth management for athletes. My experiences have given me a unique perspective on the pressures faced by athletes and the critical need for mental health support in the sports industry. I am committed to developing programs that provide mental health resources and support for athletes, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. By addressing these needs, I hope to create a more supportive and sustainable environment for athletes, helping them achieve success both on and off the field. Dealing with anxiety and depression has fostered significant personal growth. I have learned to prioritize self-care, seek help when needed, and advocate for mental health awareness. These experiences have made me a more compassionate and determined individual, committed to making a positive impact on the lives of others. In conclusion, mental health has profoundly impacted my life, shaping my experiences, relationships, and aspirations. Through resilience and determination, I have overcome significant challenges and used my journey to advocate for mental health awareness and support. I am committed to continuing this advocacy in my personal and professional life, working to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

Growing up in a diverse community and experiencing various challenges myself, I have always been deeply committed to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. My journey has allowed me to engage in meaningful efforts that have positively impacted my community and fostered personal growth. One of the most significant ways I have contributed to diversity and inclusion is through my involvement in sports and community programs. As a student-athlete and team manager at California Baptist University (CBU), I have had the opportunity to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. My role as a D1 men's basketball team manager has allowed me to foster an inclusive environment where all team members feel valued and respected, regardless of their background. Recognizing the importance of representation, I have actively promoted the inclusion of underrepresented groups in sports. This includes advocating for opportunities for minority athletes and supporting initiatives that provide access to sports programs for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. By doing so, I have helped create a more inclusive and equitable environment within the sports community. My volunteer work has also been a platform for promoting social justice and equity. From a young age, I have volunteered at my church and with inner-city kids, many of whom come from marginalized communities. These experiences have provided me with a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by underprivileged individuals and the importance of addressing systemic inequalities. One of my significant volunteer efforts involved mentoring inner-city youth. Through this program, I provided academic support, life skills training, and mentorship to help these young individuals overcome barriers and achieve their potential. This experience taught me the importance of empathy, patience, and the power of positive role models in driving social change. Advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion has not only allowed me to make a positive impact on my community but has also fostered my personal growth. These efforts have deepened my understanding of systemic issues and the importance of allyship in addressing them. I have learned to listen actively, approach situations with empathy, and use my privilege to amplify the voices of marginalized individuals. Additionally, my involvement in these efforts has strengthened my leadership skills and my commitment to creating positive change. I have become more confident in advocating for what is right and have developed the ability to mobilize others toward a common goal. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the power of collective action and the importance of standing up for social justice. As I continue my journey, I am committed to furthering my efforts in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. My career aspirations in sport management and wealth management for athletes include creating programs that address these critical areas. By focusing on mental health support, financial literacy, and access to opportunities, I aim to continue making a positive impact on the lives of athletes and the broader community. In conclusion, my efforts in promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice have allowed me to positively impact my community and grow as an individual. These experiences have shaped my values and aspirations, driving me to continue advocating for a more just and equitable society.

The journey to higher education has been a path marked by significant challenges and perseverance. From a young age, I faced obstacles that could have easily derailed my academic and personal growth. However, my determination to succeed and the support of my family, faith, and community have been the driving forces behind my achievements. Growing up as one of seven siblings, I quickly learned the value of responsibility and teamwork. My family faced financial instability, with the constant threat of our house falling into foreclosure and my father being out of work due to injury and cancer. These hardships required me to step up and support my family in any way I could. Balancing school, sports, and part-time jobs became a necessity, and this experience instilled in me a strong work ethic and resilience. In addition to financial challenges, I also had to cope with my own health issues. I was involved in a motocross accident that left me with a traumatic brain injury and whiplash. This injury, one of five brain injuries I have endured, resulted in the loss of my ability to speak several foreign languages I had learned and left me with a slight stutter. The recovery process was long and arduous, requiring physical therapy, speech therapy, and a relentless commitment to improvement. Despite these challenges, I have excelled academically and in extracurricular activities. At Christian Heritage School, I maintained a 3.84 GPA while actively participating in multiple sports, including basketball, football, baseball, volleyball, and track and field. My passion for sports extended into college, where I continued to excel academically and athletically at California Baptist University (CBU). At CBU, I have maintained a 3.81 GPA and made the President’s List for the past two years. My involvement in sports has been a significant part of my college experience. I played D3 men's basketball and served as the team manager for the D1 men's basketball team. These roles have taught me valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and dedication, which have been instrumental in my personal and academic growth. I am currently pursuing a degree in sport management at California Baptist University. My passion for sports and my desire to make a positive impact in the lives of athletes have driven me to this field of study. Upon graduation, my goal is to work in the NBA and eventually transition into wealth management for athletes. I aim to create programs that support mental health and financial literacy, particularly for athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds. My experiences have shaped my vision for the changes I want to accomplish in my field and for myself. In the sports industry, I have witnessed the immense pressure and mental health challenges that athletes face. Many athletes, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, lack the resources and support needed to navigate these challenges. I am committed to addressing these issues by developing comprehensive mental health support programs that provide athletes with the tools and resources they need to maintain their well-being. Additionally, financial literacy is a critical area that needs attention. Many athletes, particularly those who come into sudden wealth, struggle with managing their finances effectively. I plan to implement financial literacy programs that educate athletes on budgeting, investing, and long-term financial planning. By equipping athletes with this knowledge, I hope to help them achieve financial stability and success both during and after their careers. On a personal level, I am dedicated to continuous self-improvement and growth. The challenges I have faced have taught me the importance of resilience, perseverance, and a positive mindset. I am committed to further developing these qualities and using them to inspire and support others. By sharing my experiences and mentoring young athletes, I hope to foster a culture of support and encouragement within the sports community. To accomplish these changes, I am willing to drive several initiatives and take on leadership roles within the sports industry. I plan to collaborate with organizations, teams, and educational institutions to develop and implement mental health and financial literacy programs. Building strong partnerships and leveraging my network will be essential in driving these initiatives forward. I am also committed to advocating for policy changes that prioritize the mental health and financial well-being of athletes. This includes working with professional sports leagues and governing bodies to establish standards and guidelines for mental health support and financial education. By influencing policy changes, I aim to create a more supportive and sustainable environment for athletes. Moreover, I am dedicated to ongoing education and professional development. By staying informed about the latest research and best practices in sport management, mental health, and financial literacy, I can ensure that the programs and initiatives I develop are effective and impactful. I will seek out opportunities for advanced training and certifications to enhance my knowledge and skills in these areas. In conclusion, my journey to higher education has been shaped by significant challenges and a relentless commitment to overcoming them. Through perseverance, support, and a passion for making a positive impact, I have excelled academically and athletically. My experiences have driven me to pursue a degree in sport management and set ambitious goals for my career. I am committed to making a difference in the lives of athletes by addressing mental health and financial literacy issues within the sports industry. By driving initiatives, advocating for policy changes, and continuously improving myself, I aim to create a supportive and empowering environment for athletes. My journey has taught me the power of resilience and the importance of giving back, and I am determined to use these lessons to inspire and support future generations.

Community involvement has always been a central part of my life, driven by a deep desire to give back and make a positive impact. Several factors inspire my commitment to community service: my faith as a Messianic Jew, the support I've received during personal hardships, and the example set by my family and mentors. These influences have shaped my values and motivated me to contribute meaningfully to the lives of others. My faith plays a significant role in inspiring my community involvement. Messianic Judaism emphasizes the importance of loving and serving others, which aligns with my desire to make a difference. My own experiences with adversity, including a traumatic brain injury from a motocross accident, have further fueled this passion. The support I received during my recovery highlighted the power of community and the impact that compassion and assistance can have on someone's life. This realization has driven me to pay it forward and support others facing their own challenges. From a young age, I have been actively involved in volunteer work. Volunteering at my church and working with inner-city kids has allowed me to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds and provide support where it is needed most. Through these experiences, I have seen firsthand the positive impact that community service can have, not only on the recipients but also on those who give their time and effort. In my volunteer roles, I have focused on mentoring young people, sharing my story, and encouraging them to pursue their goals despite any obstacles they may face. By offering guidance and support, I aim to help them build confidence and resilience, much like the support I received during my recovery. This mentorship is particularly meaningful to me, as I understand the importance of having positive role models who believe in your potential. My involvement in the community extends beyond volunteering. I have actively sought opportunities to influence change and address systemic issues. For example, during my time at California Baptist University, I conducted a poll on the CBU Fizz app, where I proposed the idea of adding a formal dance to enhance on-campus spirit. This initiative garnered significant support, demonstrating a collective desire for new traditions and experiences. Although it was a small step, it reflected my commitment to improving the campus community and creating a more engaging and inclusive environment for students. My career aspirations are also deeply intertwined with my desire to effect change in the community. As a sport management major, I aim to work in the NBA and eventually in wealth management for athletes. In these roles, I plan to develop programs that support mental health and financial literacy, particularly for athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds. By addressing these critical areas, I hope to provide athletes with the resources they need to succeed both on and off the field, thereby contributing to the broader community's well-being. In summary, my inspiration to get involved in the community stems from my faith, personal experiences, and the support I have received throughout my life. Through volunteering, mentorship, and initiatives aimed at creating positive change, I strive to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. My commitment to community service will continue to guide my future endeavors, as I work to support and uplift those around me, fostering a more compassionate and inclusive society.

When I was younger, I experienced a significant hardship that left a lasting impact on my life. I was involved in a motocross accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury and whiplash. This was one of five brain injuries I have endured, and it could have been much worse if my spine had been injured. The accident left me with a slight stutter and took away my ability to speak the foreign languages I had diligently learned: Spanish, Hebrew, Russian, American Sign Language, and I was in the process of learning French. This incident was not only physically challenging but also emotionally and mentally taxing. Losing the ability to communicate in the languages I loved felt like losing a part of my identity. The stutter added another layer of difficulty, affecting my confidence and making social interactions more challenging. Despite these obstacles, I was determined to overcome this hardship. The recovery process was long and arduous, involving physical therapy, speech therapy, and countless hours of practice and patience. I had to relearn how to articulate my thoughts clearly and regain my confidence in speaking. My faith played a crucial role in my recovery. As a Messianic Jew, I leaned on my belief in God’s plan and the strength that comes from perseverance. Prayer and meditation became daily practices that helped me stay grounded and focused on my recovery. My family, especially my six siblings, provided unwavering support and encouragement. Their love and belief in my ability to overcome this challenge were instrumental in my healing process. Agape love, the selfless, unconditional love that seeks the well-being of others, has been a guiding principle in my life. My experiences have deepened my understanding of this love and how it can transform lives. I strive to embody Agape love in my daily actions and interactions, drawing from the support and compassion I received during my recovery. One way I give back to my community is through volunteer work. From a young age, I have been involved in volunteering at my church and with inner-city kids. These experiences have allowed me to share my story, provide support, and inspire others facing their own challenges. I understand the importance of having a supportive community and aim to be that source of support for others. In addition, my career aspirations are rooted in the desire to help others. Pursuing a degree in sport management at California Baptist University, I hope to work in the NBA and eventually in wealth management for athletes. I plan to create programs that offer mental health support and financial literacy education to athletes, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds. By addressing these critical areas, I aim to reduce the pressures athletes face and help them achieve long-term stability and success. Overcoming the hardship of a traumatic brain injury and the subsequent loss of my language abilities was a defining moment in my life. It taught me resilience, the power of faith, and the importance of a supportive community. These lessons have shaped my approach to life, inspiring me to embody Agape love and give back to my community in meaningful ways. By sharing my experiences and providing support to others, I hope to make a positive impact and help those facing their own hardships. Whether through volunteer work or my future career, my goal is to live out the principles of Agape love, fostering a compassionate and supportive environment for all.

Navigating life with anxiety and depression has been a significant part of my journey. The struggles I faced with mental health began in my early teens and have continued through my college years. These experiences have profoundly shaped who I am today, influencing my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations in ways I never imagined. As a Messianic Jew, my faith has been both a source of strength and a lens through which I view my mental health challenges. My faith teaches that trials and tribulations are part of life's journey, and through them, we grow stronger and more resilient. This belief has been crucial in helping me cope with anxiety and depression. It has taught me to seek solace in prayer, meditation, and community support, reinforcing the importance of spiritual well-being alongside mental health. Moreover, my faith has instilled in me a sense of purpose and hope. Messianic Judaism emphasizes the importance of perseverance and the belief that God has a plan for each of us. This perspective has been a beacon of hope during my darkest times, reminding me that my struggles are not in vain and that they can lead to growth and greater understanding. Dealing with anxiety and depression has significantly influenced my relationships, both within my family and with friends. Growing up as one of seven siblings, I learned early on the importance of support and understanding within a family unit. My siblings and I share a deep bond, forged through shared experiences and mutual support. They have been my pillars of strength, providing comfort and understanding when I needed it the most. My experiences have also taught me the value of empathy and patience in relationships. I have learned to recognize the signs of mental health struggles in others and to approach these situations with compassion and understanding. This has strengthened my relationships, as friends and family know they can rely on me for support and a listening ear. Furthermore, my mental health journey has made me more open and honest about my feelings, fostering deeper and more authentic connections with those around me. By sharing my struggles and victories, I have been able to create a supportive network of friends who understand and respect my journey. My experiences with anxiety and depression have profoundly influenced my career aspirations. I am currently pursuing a degree in sport management at California Baptist University, with the goal of working in the NBA and eventually in wealth management for athletes. My mental health journey has given me a unique perspective on the pressures faced by athletes, both on and off the field. Athletes often deal with immense pressure, high expectations, and the constant scrutiny of the public eye. These challenges can lead to significant mental health issues, which are often overlooked or stigmatized. My own experiences have made me acutely aware of the need for mental health support in the sports industry. I aspire to create programs and resources that address these needs, providing athletes with the tools and support necessary to maintain their mental well-being. In addition to mental health support, I am passionate about financial literacy and management. Many athletes, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, lack the knowledge and resources to manage their finances effectively. This can lead to financial instability and stress, exacerbating mental health issues. By working in wealth management, I hope to provide athletes with the guidance and education they need to secure their financial future, reducing stress and allowing them to focus on their careers and personal growth. Beyond my professional aspirations, my mental health journey has inspired me to advocate for greater awareness and support for mental health issues within my community. I have volunteered with inner-city kids and at my church, sharing my experiences and offering support to those who may be struggling with similar issues. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of community support and the power of sharing our stories to inspire and uplift others. I also hope to work with organizations that promote mental health awareness and support, both within the sports industry and the broader community. By leveraging my experiences and insights, I aim to contribute to the development of programs and policies that prioritize mental health and provide the necessary resources and support for those in need. In conclusion, my experience with mental health has profoundly influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. As a Messianic Jew, my faith has provided me with strength and hope, guiding me through my struggles and shaping my perspective on mental health. My relationships have been enriched by the empathy and understanding I have gained, fostering deeper and more authentic connections with my family and friends. Professionally, my mental health journey has inspired me to pursue a career in sport management and wealth management for athletes, with a focus on mental health support and financial literacy. I am committed to advocating for greater awareness and support for mental health issues within my community, using my experiences to inspire and uplift others. Ultimately, I believe that our struggles can become our strengths, and by sharing our stories and supporting one another, we can create a more compassionate and understanding world.

Adversity has been a constant companion in my life, shaping my character and fortifying my resolve. One of the most significant challenges I have faced is the precarious financial situation of my family. With our house possibly falling into foreclosure and my father out of work due to injury and cancer, the burden of supporting my family has been immense. Additionally, my younger brother, who is autistic and has type 1 diabetes, requires constant care and attention. Balancing these responsibilities with my academic and extracurricular commitments has been a strenuous endeavor. Throughout high school and college, I learned to manage my time efficiently. I juggled my studies, participation in multiple sports, volunteer work, and part-time jobs. My experiences at Christian Heritage School and California Baptist University taught me the value of resilience and perseverance. Despite the pressures, I maintained a high GPA, excelled in sports, and earned recognition such as the President’s List at CBU and the Scholar-Athlete Award at Clarks Summit University. Working at Panda Express and as a D1 men's basketball team manager, along with previous jobs like Dunkin' Donuts and D1 men's basketball summer camp, has instilled in me a strong work ethic. These roles demanded dedication and discipline, qualities that have been crucial in overcoming the adversities I faced at home. The emotional and financial challenges have also underscored the importance of support systems. My family, friends, and mentors provided invaluable encouragement, helping me stay focused on my goals. Their belief in my potential fueled my determination to succeed, no matter the obstacles. How I Wish to Help My Community in the Future My experiences have ignited a passion for giving back to my community, particularly in ways that can create long-term positive impacts. With my background in sport management and aspirations to work in the NBA and wealth management for athletes, I envision using my career to foster community development and support young athletes from underprivileged backgrounds. Sports have been a vital part of my life, providing not only physical fitness but also teaching teamwork, discipline, and leadership. I plan to establish programs that offer sports training, mentorship, and academic support to children in inner cities. These programs will aim to keep kids engaged in positive activities, helping them develop essential life skills and providing pathways to higher education and professional opportunities. Moreover, I aim to leverage my expertise in wealth management to educate young athletes about financial literacy. Many athletes, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, lack knowledge about managing their finances, which can lead to difficulties later in life. By providing workshops and one-on-one counseling, I hope to equip them with the skills needed to make informed financial decisions, ensuring their long-term stability and success. Additionally, I want to advocate for policies that support families dealing with similar adversities as mine. Embarking on a journey towards a major in Sport Management with a minor in Business at California Baptist University, I have been fueled by my unwavering passion for sports and my determination to excel in the business side of the industry. However, this path has not been without its share of challenges, which I have confronted head-on, emerging stronger and more resolute than ever before. Throughout my high school years, my family faced a series of adversities that tested our resilience and unity. The initial blow was the diagnosis of my father with stage 3 prostate cancer. Witnessing him battle this formidable foe while juggling my studies and extracurricular commitments was undoubtedly taxing. It required a delicate balancing act, where I had to provide emotional support to my family while maintaining my academic responsibilities. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance, time management, and empathy. I learned to appreciate the value of every moment and recognize the strength that can emerge from unity. As my father valiantly fought his battle with cancer, destiny dealt us another blow in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic. Just as my father was on the path to recovery, he contracted the virus, thrusting us into yet another period of uncertainty and fear. This incident reinforced the fragility of life and the unpredictable nature of the world. It highlighted the significance of adaptability and the need to find silver linings in even the darkest of circumstances. During this time, I deepened my ability to navigate ambiguity and honed my problem-solving skills, both of which are essential traits in both the sport management and business fields. The challenges did not cease there. The financial strain caused by my father's medical expenses and the pandemic pushed us perilously close to losing our family home. The prospect of foreclosure was daunting, but it inspired a fierce determination within me to take control of my destiny. Fueled by the desire to not just survive, but thrive, I delved into research about financial planning, property management, and foreclosure prevention strategies. These efforts led me to develop a newfound appreciation for the importance of financial literacy and strategic planning, which align perfectly with my pursuit of a minor in Business. The adversities I have faced have molded me into a more compassionate, adaptable, and tenacious individual. They have honed my ability to remain composed under pressure and to find opportunity in adversity. These qualities are not only integral to excelling in the dynamic field of sport management but also to thriving in the intricate world of business. Through these experiences, I have gained a profound understanding of the significance of the symbiotic relationship between sports and business. Just as athletes strive to overcome hurdles and achieve greatness, businesses also face challenges that require innovative solutions and relentless determination. My journey, fraught with hardships, has instilled in me the belief that no obstacle is insurmountable, and every setback presents a chance for growth. Volunteering at my university's basketball summer youth camp has taught me the power of giving back to the community. Witnessing the joy and enthusiasm in the young campers' eyes as they honed their basketball skills filled my heart with a sense of fulfillment that I had never experienced before. I realized that through my passion for basketball, I could positively influence and inspire these young minds to pursue their dreams fearlessly. Guiding the kids on the court, motivating them to push their boundaries, and fostering a supportive environment has been both challenging and rewarding. The responsibility of nurturing young talent has instilled in me a sense of accountability and dedication that has transcended beyond the basketball court. However, as much as volunteering has been a source of personal growth and satisfaction, my family's financial situation has presented significant challenges. My father, a dedicated firefighter who selflessly served the community for 40 years, was the main breadwinner for our family. Unfortunately, life threw him numerous curveballs, and he had to confront a series of health battles that impacted our family's financial stability. After enduring a knee injury on the job, my father fought valiantly against stage 4 prostate cancer, a battle that drained both his strength and our resources. Just when we thought the worst was behind us, COVID-19 struck during his recovery, exacerbating his condition and pushing us to the limits of emotional and financial strain. To address his mental health needs, my father is currently undergoing a 6-month stay at a first responder PTSD facility. With my father's income significantly reduced and mounting medical bills, the responsibility of funding my college education now rests heavily on my shoulders. While my family has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams, I am determined not to burden them further. Taking up the mantle of paying for my college tuition has become a personal mission and an essential step toward securing my future. This scholarship would be a lifeline that would enable me to pursue higher education without compromising on the quality of my college experience. By alleviating the financial burden, this scholarship would allow me to focus wholeheartedly on my academic pursuits and dedicate more time to making a difference through volunteering and community service. I am committed to using my education and basketball expertise to give back to my community. With the support of this scholarship, I can continue volunteering and mentoring young athletes, empowering them to overcome challenges and find success both on and off the court. My experiences as a volunteer have shown me the incredible impact one individual can make, and I am determined to be that positive force for change in my community. In conclusion, volunteering as a basketball summer youth camp coach has reshaped my outlook on life and revealed the profound impact one can have on others through selfless acts. However, my family's financial struggles have presented a hurdle in pursuing my educational aspirations. With this scholarship, I can continue my academic journey and fulfill my commitment to serve my community, honoring my father's legacy of selflessness and dedication.

    Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Mental health is a critical component of overall wellness. It influences how we think, feel, and behave, and plays a significant role in our ability to cope with the challenges of daily life. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression, I understand the importance of prioritizing my mental health and taking proactive steps to maintain my well-being. In this essay, I will explore why I believe my mental health is important, and how I maintain it through practices such as rest, therapy, and basketball. Firstly, I believe that mental health is important because it affects all aspects of our lives. When we are struggling with mental health challenges, it can be difficult to concentrate, make decisions, or engage in activities we once enjoyed. It can also affect our relationships with others, leading to feelings of isolation and disconnection. Therefore, taking care of our mental health is crucial in order to lead a fulfilling and happy life. One of the ways that I maintain my mental wellness is by prioritizing rest. Getting enough sleep is essential for overall health, both physical and mental. When we are well-rested, we are better able to concentrate, have more energy, and are better equipped to deal with stress. For me, this means making sure that I get at least 8 hours of sleep each night and trying to establish a consistent sleep schedule. I also make sure to take breaks throughout the day, whether that means going for a walk or simply taking a few minutes to breathe deeply and relax. Another practice that I find helpful in maintaining my mental wellness is therapy. Seeing a therapist provides a safe and confidential space where I can discuss my thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. My therapist helps me to identify patterns in my thinking and behavior that may be contributing to my anxiety and depression, and provides me with tools and strategies to cope with difficult emotions. This has been a game-changer for me, as it has allowed me to gain greater insight into myself and my struggles and has given me a sense of control over my mental health. Finally, I maintain my mental wellness through playing basketball. Exercise has been shown to have numerous benefits for mental health, including reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Playing basketball allows me to release pent-up energy and frustration, as well as providing a sense of accomplishment and community. It gives me something to look forward to and a way to take my mind off of my problems for a little while. In conclusion, mental health is an essential component of overall wellness. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression, I understand the importance of prioritizing my mental health and taking proactive steps to maintain my well-being. For me, this means prioritizing rest, seeing a therapist, and playing basketball. By taking care of our mental health, we are better able to cope with the challenges of daily life and lead fulfilling and happy lives.

We are encouraged to express our opinions and to listen to others with an open mind, recognizing that we all have something to contribute to the conversation. In extracurricular activities, I have been involved in organizing events that promote free speech and diversity of thought on campus. The human mind is a complex and powerful thing, capable of producing both great beauty and terrible pain. For me, this has been all too apparent in my struggles with anxiety and depression. As a Messianic Jew, these experiences have deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Growing up in a Messianic Jewish household, I was taught to value community, faith, and tradition. I learned about the history and customs of my faith, as well as the importance of living a life that honors God and serves others. While I was grateful for this upbringing, it wasn't until I faced mental health challenges that I truly began to understand the depth and complexity of my beliefs. My journey with mental health began during my teenage years. At the time, I felt overwhelmed by the pressures of school, family, and social expectations. I started experiencing panic attacks, obsessive thoughts, and feelings of despair that I couldn't explain or control. It was a scary and isolating experience, and one that I felt ashamed of. As someone who grew up in a faith community that valued strength, resilience, and positivity, admitting to struggling with mental health felt like a sign of weakness and spiritual failure. It wasn't until I started seeking professional help and learning more about mental health that I began to shift my perspective. I realized that anxiety and depression are not signs of moral failure or lack of faith, but rather complex conditions that can affect anyone regardless of their background or beliefs. I also discovered that many of the tools and practices that I had learned through my faith, such as prayer, meditation, and community support, could be helpful in managing my symptoms. Through my struggles with mental health, I also gained a deeper appreciation for the value of relationships. I found that being vulnerable and honest with my loved ones about my struggles not only helped me feel less alone, but also deepened my connections with them. I also learned to be more compassionate and empathetic towards others who may be going through similar experiences, and to offer support and understanding whenever possible. In terms of my career aspirations, my experience with mental health has influenced my desire to work in fields where I can help others. Specifically, I am interested in pursuing a career in the sports industry, either as an investment banker for athletes or as a professional in the NBA. My passion for sports stems from the way that it can bring people together, transcend boundaries, and inspire individuals to reach their full potential. I believe that by working in these fields, I can use my skills and knowledge to help athletes and others in the industry navigate the unique challenges that they face, including mental health issues. Overall, my experience with mental health has been a difficult but ultimately transformative one. It has challenged me to confront my beliefs and assumptions, deepen my relationships, and pursue a career path that aligns with my values and passions. As a Messianic Jew, I believe that mental health is a crucial aspect of holistic wellness, and that seeking help and support is not a sign of weakness but rather a courageous act of self-care. I hope that by sharing my story, I can encourage others to do the same and to find hope and healing in their own journeys.

When I was in high school, I attended a party with a friend that was shot up. We were lucky to escape unharmed, but the experience left a deep impact on me. Furthermore, my dad, who is a firefighter, used to work in a city that had a lot of gun violence. Hearing about the incidents he responded to was heartbreaking and eye-opening. Despite the trauma caused by gun violence, I believe that we can bring awareness to the issue and create change. As I pursue my career, I plan to use my platform to advocate for gun control measures and support those affected by gun violence. One way I plan to do this is by working in the NBA or wherever my career takes me. The NBA has been vocal about issues of social justice, and I hope to use my position in the league to continue this advocacy work. I want to encourage players to speak out and use their platforms to raise awareness about gun violence and other social justice issues. Additionally, I plan to support organizations that are dedicated to reducing gun violence and assisting those affected by it. I want to volunteer my time and resources to organizations that offer counseling, support, and advocacy to survivors of gun violence. Furthermore, I believe that education is crucial in preventing gun violence, and I plan to use my platform to educate others about the issue and encourage them to take action. Apart from my career aspirations, I am also involved in a variety of extracurricular activities. Most of my extracurricular activities are sports-related, as sports have been a major part of my life since childhood. I am a member of my university's basketball team, and I also participate in pickup games and other basketball-related activities. I believe that sports have the power to bring people together and create a sense of community. Through my involvement in sports, I have developed leadership skills, teamwork abilities, and perseverance. These skills have been invaluable both on and off the court. In addition to basketball, I am also involved in other sports such as football and track and field. I have competed in various tournaments and championships and have learned valuable lessons about sportsmanship, hard work, and dedication. Moreover, I have also volunteered as a coach for youth sports teams. I believe that sports can be a positive influence on young people's lives, and I hope to continue coaching and mentoring young athletes in the future. In conclusion, gun violence is a serious issue that affects many individuals and communities. While I have had personal experiences with gun violence, I believe that we can bring awareness to the issue and create change. Through my career aspirations and extracurricular activities, I plan to use my platform to advocate for gun control measures and support those affected by gun violence. Basketball is more than just a sport to me; it's a way of life. Ever since I was a child, I've been passionate about basketball, and it has played an important part in shaping the person I am today. To me, basketball is not just a game; it's a form of self-expression, a way to stay mentally and physically fit, and a source of joy and excitement. There are many reasons why I am passionate about basketball. Firstly, it allows me to express myself in a way that no other activity can. The court is my canvas, and the ball is my paintbrush. I can showcase my creativity, agility, and quick-thinking through my moves and passes. When I'm on the court, I feel like I'm in my element, and everything else fades away. It's a feeling of pure exhilaration that I can't get enough of. Moreover, basketball has been instrumental in maintaining my mental and physical health. It's a great way to meditate and clear my mind of any negative thoughts or stressors. When I'm playing, I'm fully present in the moment, and my mind is focused solely on the game. This not only helps me reduce stress but also keeps me physically fit and healthy. Additionally, basketball has taught me the importance of teamwork and communication. Playing on a team has taught me how to work together with others towards a common goal. It has also taught me how to communicate effectively both on and off the court. Through basketball, I have learned how to be a better leader, listener, and collaborator. These skills have not only helped me become a better basketball player but also a better person overall. I am grateful for the lessons basketball has taught me, and I will carry them with me for the rest of my life. Basketball has also taught me a lot about myself. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that life will always have its ups and downs, just like playing in a terrible game or losing a big game. However, the most important thing is to have a "next game" mentality. In other words, it's crucial to pick yourself up and move on, no matter how tough the circumstances may seem. Basketball has taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of never giving up. In conclusion, basketball is a huge part of my life, and I can't imagine a day without it. It has given me a sense of purpose, helped me stay mentally and physically fit, and taught me valuable life lessons. It's more than just a sport; it's a way of life.

My experience with cancer has had a profound impact on my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. When my dad was diagnosed with cancer during my high school years, my life was turned upside down. Suddenly, basketball, which had been a major focus of my life, had to take a backseat to helping my dad through his treatment. During this time, I learned the importance of family and the strength of the human spirit. Seeing my dad fight through his illness with such courage and determination was inspiring, and it taught me the value of perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. It also deepened my appreciation for the people in my life who supported me during this difficult time, including my family, friends, and coaches. My relationships with those around me have also been affected by this experience. My family is much closer now than before because we were able to rely on each other during such a difficult time. We are more understanding and supportive of one another which has strengthened our bond even further. Additionally, my friends have become like family; they understand how important it was for me to take care of my dad while still pursuing an education so they stood by my side through it all without judgement or criticism. My dad's battle with cancer also shaped my career aspirations. As I supported him through his treatment, I saw firsthand the impact that healthcare professionals can have on the lives of patients and their families. This experience inspired me to pursue a career in healthcare, specifically in the field of nursing. I want to make a difference in the lives of others and provide the same kind of care and support that my family received during my dad's treatment. More recently, my dad's battle with cancer took a new turn during my first year of college when he was diagnosed with COVID-19 while finishing up his chemotherapy. This was a scary and uncertain time for my family, but we pulled together once again and supported each other through this new challenge. Overall, my experience with cancer has reinforced my belief in the strength of the human spirit, the importance of family and community, and the power of healthcare professionals to make a difference in people's lives. Andrew Perez Mental Illness/Suicidal Awareness Education Scholarship
My passions have always been basketball, admiring art, and music. I have suffered from mental illness since I had a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) when I was younger. Anxiety and depression were constant struggles that affected my day-to-day life in many ways. To cope with these emotions, I turned to the things that brought me joy - basketball, art, and music. Basketball has been my escape for many years now; it is the one thing that can take away all of my worries and stressors for an hour or two each day when I play on the court. It has also helped me build relationships with other people who share similar interests as well as given me a sense of purpose in life. Not only does playing help clear my mind but also watching games brings me so much joy because it reminds me why I love this game so much – being able to witness amazing athletes do what they do best is inspiring to see! Art was another way I used to express myself while dealing with mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression; creating paintings or sketches allowed me to channel any negative energy into something positive which made coping easier than before. Additionally, looking at artwork by different artists around the world was very calming for me – seeing how diverse styles of art could be beautiful in their own way gives hope during dark times! Lastly, listening to music helps bring some peace into chaotic days; there are certain songs that make me feel better no matter how bad things get because they remind us we’re not alone in our struggles. In terms of goals and aspirations for my future, graduating college with a GPA higher than 3.5 is definitely one of them; having this academic achievement would open up more doors for opportunities after college such as working within the sports world, I would preferably work in the NBA. With hard work comes success so if everything goes according to plan then hopefully someday soon enough I will be living out those dreams. Overall, basketball, art, and music have helped me cope with my mental illness in more ways than I can count. From finding purpose in life to calming down during dark times, these passions have given me a sense of hope that has kept going strong for years now. With the help of these activities and by setting realistic goals for myself, I am able to look forward to brighter days ahead.
    Theresa Lord Future Leader Scholarship
My name is Josiah Rose, and I am a sophomore in college. My educational goals for the 2022-2023 semester are to finish with all A's this collegiate year and to graduate college with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. This goal has been my focus since I began college last year; however, there have been many obstacles that have stood in my way on this journey. One major obstacle that I faced was having to give up my dream of playing college basketball due to helping take care of my dad as he recovered from cancer treatment. During this time, life threw me some curveballs which made it difficult to stay focused on schoolwork while still being able to help out at home when needed. At first, giving up something so important was hard but looking back now, it taught me an invaluable lesson: family is more important than anything else, and God will open another door if we remain faithful and continue striving for our goals no matter what comes our way. This experience also showed me how much strength can be found within ourselves when faced with adversity; although I had felt like giving up at times during this tumultuous period, I chose not to succumb to fear or doubt but instead refocus myself on achieving success through education instead of athletics. This meant taking advantage of any resources available such as tutoring sessions offered by the university, or seeking assistance from professors who were willing to go above and beyond in order for their student’s academic needs to be met even during trying times such as these were personal situations may interfere with studies. Additionally, through online classes offered by the university, I could balance work/home responsibilities better while keeping up with the coursework required each semester. With a strong support system consisting of mentors, friends, family members, and advisers constantly pushing me towards excellence throughout every step along the way; being able to overcome this obstacle has increased my confidence significantly moving forward into completing the remainder of my degree requirements successfully without letting outside factors hinder progress. Furthermore, this experience has equipped me with essential problem-solving skills necessary in order to accomplish future tasks both inside & outside academia; allowing room for growth regarding independent thinking & decision-making processes while finding solutions under stressful conditions similar to those encountered prior. All things considered ,my ultimate goal remains unchanged : graduating from college & obtaining an esteemed degree within three years time whilst maintaining an impressive GPA above 3.5 ; regardless if challenges arise again or not down line . Although there are plenty more hurdles yet ahead before reaching said destination -with faith & determination nothing shall stand between myself & achieving greatness academically speaking !
Xavier M. Monroe Heart of Gold Memorial Scholarship
Growing up, I was the youngest boy of seven children. As a result, I had to learn how to be resourceful and manage my time wisely in order to keep up with everyone else. One of the biggest challenges I faced during high school was balancing multiple sports on top of basketball while also maintaining a GPA of 3.8. With so much going on at once, it felt like an uphill battle, but one that I knew would ultimately prove beneficial if I could stay focused and motivated throughout the process. The biggest obstacle I faced during my time in high school was balancing academics with athletics. As an athlete, it can be easy to get caught up in the competition aspect and forget that academics are just as important, if not more so, than winning games or matches. The pressure from coaches to perform well on both fronts could sometimes become overwhelming, but it taught me how important resilience is when facing obstacles; no matter how many times you fail or make mistakes, staying positive and pushing forward through hardships will help you achieve success in the long run. I eventually learned that managing one’s time efficiently is key when attempting to balance two seemingly conflicting goals like academic excellence alongside athletic performance - something which proved invaluable later on down the line when applying for college scholarships or internships where organization skills were imperative for success. Throughout my experience, I also discovered that having strong support systems, including parents, friends, and teachers, helped me stay motivated during difficult moments; these people provided guidance whenever I needed it without judgment which allowed me to focus solely on reaching my goals instead of worrying about any potential criticism from others who may have doubted my capabilities. I started by ensuring that all my academic responsibilities were handled before any extra-curricular activities. This meant completing homework immediately after school, studying for tests ahead of time instead of cramming at the last minute and creating study plans for upcoming exams. In order to keep up with my sports commitments, I had to be organized and prioritize specific tasks over others. This meant creating a weekly schedule that allowed me to practice for each sport while also having enough time for studying and getting rest. It was definitely challenging but it taught me how important it is to manage your time efficiently in order to reach your goals. I also learned the value of hard work and dedication through this experience as well. Even when things got tough, or I felt overwhelmed by all the different obligations I had taken on, I kept pushing forward because I knew that if I could stay focused, then eventually, everything would pay off in the end. And sure enough, it did. By the time I graduated high school, I had achieved a 3.8 GPA and was able to continue playing basketball at the Division III level. The lessons that I learned from this experience are ones that have stuck with me ever since and will no doubt continue to serve me well in the future. It taught me how important it is to stay organized, prioritize tasks correctly, and never give up, even when faced with obstacles or challenges along the way.

    Your Health Journey Scholarship
My health journey started when I was in middle school. Growing up, I had always been an active kid but never really put thought into my overall health and well-being until then. My passion for sports, particularly basketball, piqued my interest in living a healthier lifestyle and since then, it has become a priority of mine. I have made numerous changes to my lifestyle over the years that have helped me lead a more healthy life. First and foremost is physical activity. As mentioned earlier, sports are something I am passionate about which makes it easier to stay motivated to remain physically active on a daily basis. Basketball is by far my favorite sport; I play regularly at the park with friends or even just shoot around alone sometimes if I am short on time. When the weather is bad, I often find myself in my local gym playing a game of pick-up or getting some cardio done on the treadmill or elliptical machine. In addition to physical activity, proper nutrition has also been an integral part of my health journey. As a teenager, it was not uncommon for me to snack on unhealthy processed foods and sweets but over time, I have transitioned into making healthier choices when it comes to food. Nowadays I make sure that most of my meals consist mainly of healthy proteins such as lean meats and fish as well as complex carbohydrates like brown rice and whole wheat breads. On top of this, I try to incorporate fruits and vegetables whenever possible because they are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Lastly, I make sure to get enough rest every night in order to stay healthy. Too often, I find myself staying up late doing things like playing video games or even just scrolling through my phone which can be detrimental to my overall health. To combat this, I have set a strict bedtime schedule that allows me to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night so that my body has the time it needs to recover and recharge for the next day. My love of sports has been an invaluable tool when it comes to living a healthier lifestyle as it provides me with both physical activity and mental stimulation on a regular basis. With all these changes combined, I am now able to lead a much healthier life and feel better both physically and mentally.

My mom is my biggest inspiration in life. She has been there for me every step of the way, showing me what it means to be a strong and capable woman. Raising seven children on her own while pursuing her dreams of becoming a nurse practitioner has taught me that anything is possible with hard work and dedication. Growing up, I saw how much effort she put into providing for our family and being an active part of our lives despite working long hours at the hospital where she worked as an RN. My mother's unwavering commitment to taking care of us all was deeply inspiring; seeing how committed she was to making sure we were taken care of drove home the importance of striving for success in order to provide stability. My mother's example has had a huge impact on my educational goals. I'm currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health Science, and her encouragement to pursue higher education has been one of the main factors that motivated me to work hard and maintain a high GPA throughout college. Even when times were tough, she was always there with words of support and advice for how I could achieve my goals. My mom is an incredible role model who has shown me what it takes to be successful. Her determination, resilience, and dedication have inspired me to strive for excellence in all aspects of my life - not just academically but also personally. She taught me that hard work can lead to great rewards; no matter how challenging something may seem at first, if you stay focused and put in the effort, you can achieve great things. My mother has been an invaluable source of inspiration throughout my life. Her example is one that I will always draw from when making decisions about my future; her unwavering commitment to excellence is something that I strive for every day. Her dedication to providing for our family and pursuing her dreams has motivated me to do the same with my own educational goals - and it's paying off! Thanks to her guidance, I'm currently maintaining a 3.8 GPA as a Bachelor's student in health science. My mother is an incredible woman who has been a major source of inspiration in my life. Seeing her dedication to our family and career aspirations has instilled in me the importance of striving for success and motivated me to pursue my educational goals with determination. I'm so grateful that she was always there for us, no matter how busy or challenging things got - she showed me what it takes to be successful!

Hello, my name is Josiah Rose and I am the youngest boy of seven, and I have played many sports throughout the years while maintaining a GPA of 3.84. From Football in middle school to playing Basketball at the collegiate level this time last year, in which I had a GPA of 3.936 in my first semester of college. Playing a team sport with wild training and practice times was no easy task, but I managed to do it without requiring any all-nighters, being able to get the majority of my homework done in advance was a big help for me, in which getting said homework done in team study hall was also a big help. However, it would not be possible without the help of my professors, who would always answer any questions I had and help me when I needed it. This was one of the many things that helped me while being able to play Basketball at the Division III level. Furthermore, a team sport like Basketball requires a lot of leadership capabilities. From being able to lead a drill, encouraging others, and knowing your role on the team, everything that needs to be done requires a lot from the leaders. However, the coaches decide who will be the captains and/or the leaders of the team, this did not discourage me at all because I knew that a good leader did not need the title of leader in order to be looked upon as one, i used this opportunity doing the same as the captains of the team, offering to do laundry when someone couldn't that day, grabbing the medical bags before we left for a game, or offering up my seat on the bus so someone could be comfortable on the long rides, everything that i could do that showed that i was capable of being a leader was portrayed well when i was at my previous school. However, the hard work paid off when I was awarded the Scholar-Athlete Award (Maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher) before transferring home due to family health and financial issues. Now transferring closer to home has been very rough not being able to play Basketball this up and coming season since no teams had any roster spots opened, but i was not discourage, I am currently going to attend the local Division I University and be a team manager for the men's Basketball team under a great coaching staff.

Something that inspired me was the recruiting process, and here’s why. Growing up as the youngest boy of seven, there were times when it was hard to be noticed. So I would look to sports to get noticed, either watching it on TV or Playing it. This want to be noticed turned into a passion for sports, especially basketball. Growing up watching the NBA, it was a dream to play there. This dream turned into a realization that I may not be able to play on the court in the NBA, but whether, be in the NBA off the court, which is why I chose my major of sports management. And the amount of support I received for this inspiration is measurable, from my family, friends, and colleagues alike. They all too supported my dream and ideals when it came to this dream. However, I had to pause on my school and sports when my brother got Type 1 Diabetes, my little getting Cellulitis, and my dad getting stage three prostate cancer, all within months of each other. And after all of this happened I resumed my sports and school, but just when thingscould not get worse, it did. COVID-19 put my junior season to an abrupt end, a year that is crucial to getting noticed by college coaches. However, every bad thing has a silver lining. I convinced my parents to purchase a recruiting service to help me get noticed by colleges, this helped me a lot receiving a few offers and interests from Division 3 and 2 respectively. And later on my senior year I would commit to a small school in Clarks Summit Pennsylvania to play Division 3 Basketball. However, after getting recruited I thought to myself, how many other teens my age who went through the same situation that I did? How many other who are a lot better than me at basketball were not able to get recruited because they could not afford a premium recruiting service during the pandemic? Which is what inspired me. I was Inspired by the thought of helping others, which is why I plan on starting a Free recruiting service with my college degree of sports management when I graduate. To help someone get to their dream, and feel that same success that I felt when I signed my commitment form to a college to play the sport I love.

Hi, I am Josiah Rose. Being the youngest boy of seven, it was hard to get noticed in the family. But I finally convinced my parents to let me play AAU/Travel basketball. Still, my family fell into hard times; my brother got Type 1 Diabetes, my little sister got cellulitis, and my dad got stage three cancer, all within months. This put a hold on my high school basketball career, missing a year of varsity and my first year of AAU competitions. This was a very testing moment in my life because I felt that finally having something that I enjoyed taken away from me was unfair. However, this was a huge growing moment for me, being there for my siblings and dad back in 18’-19’. However, 2020 was when my high school team was doing well, and I would hopefully get enough film to send out to college recruiters. But sadly, mid-practice, my coach got a phone call to end practice early due to the first COVID-19 Outbreak in California. Another growing moment in my life was about to happen when we had to travel to and from Arizona for my Dad’s chemo treatments; thankfully, there were basketball facilities out there to allow me to continue to work on my game. My senior year, coming off of a fantastic tournament, I had enough film to send to recruiters. Convincing my parents to pay for a recruiting service (after promising to pay for half), I felt I was on my way to bigger and better things. After receiving a few invites for official visits to some D3 Schools, I only had enough money to visit one. So I chose a small D3 school in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. Who had my major of sports management and was most likely the cheapest option out of my offers, I committed. As the first collegiate athlete in my family, my next goal was to get through my first year of college without taking out any student loans. However, this may not be the case. Back in February, my Dad got injured at work. And after having cancer and COVID, his body heals itself at a slower rate, not allowing him to go to work for quite some time. Being so close to finishing my second semester, I am currently saving all of the money I get from work to pay off the last 4000 dollars I have left in my student tuition. Furthermore, I may even have to transfer to or closer to home to help my family get back on their feet. And the transfer process as a student-athlete has been hard trying to find a school that has an open spot on their roster, and if my Dad’s health continues to hinder his ability to work, I may have to consider giving up the sport I love to help him. What I plan to do with my degree in sports management in the future is to start a free recruiting service for kids and teens alike who are in the situation of not being able to pay for a premium recruiting program and don’t know where to start when it comes to theirs recruiting process. So if I win this scholarship, this would allow me to continue my second semester and set me up financially for the next, planning to work all summer to pay for college myself.
Giving Back to the Future Scholarship
My name is Josiah Rose, i am the youngest boy of seven and attempting to be the first one in my family to be debt free after college. I am currently studying sports management while also playing basketball for my university, one of my future goals is to be in the NBA whether on the court as a player or coach, or off the court working behind the scenes using my degree. However, my ultimate goal and how i plan to give back to the community is by providing a free recruiting service to kids and teens who cannot afford more popular recruiting sites such as NCSA, as someone who personally struggled to pay for the recruiting site membership and worried about not being able to play the sport i love in college, me and my mom spent a lot of nights praying that God will provide that we could pay for it. However, many things prevented getting a membership with the recruiting service that took priority, my brother getting diagnosed with type 1 diabetes my freshman year, my little sister getting a cellulitis infection my sophomore year, and my dad getting diagnosed with cancer (who thankfully is now cancer free) my junior year. My dad worked over time to provide money so i could get the account after all that has happened in my life and family, so i think to myself how many kids out there right now that are in the same or even a worse situation that i was in, their parents struggling to make ends meet while also providing their child the love and support to help them build a dream and future. As a young black man growing up in the world that we live in right now, putting myself into the shoes of other teens and kids who maybe can’t eat a full meal before they sleep, or have the newest clothes, shoes or video games, having the ability to possibly play your dream sport on the next level, while getting a higher education and not having your parents worry about paying thousands of dollars to get your name out there to the college scouts and coaches will possibly give them the hope that everyone needs in their lives.
    Bold Relaxation Scholarship
As a student-athlete in college and being the youngest boy of a family of none, taking care of my mental health is a top priority to perform in the classroom and on the court and keep a healthy state of mind while balancing school and sports. While maintaining an off-campus job can be challenging at times, but this is what I do to be in the right state of mind. How I relax on my own personal time is by watching shows that my friends have recommended to me, playing basketball and working out with friends or by myself, spending me time taking care for myself, and talking to friends back at home. How I take care of my mental health is by writing down my thoughts in a journal, finding space and time to meditate or do yoga, and venting to friends on and off-campus in a therapeutic kind of way.
