I have struggled with anxiety since I was a child, but it intensified during my teenage years. As I transitioned into college and began my pre-pharmacy coursework, the pressure I placed on myself to succeed, combined with a heavy course load and extracurricular responsibilities, caused my anxiety to skyrocket to an unmanageable level. During the fall semester of my freshman year, I started experiencing daily panic attacks and insomnia. I had difficulty concentrating in class and started isolating myself from friends and activities I used to enjoy. My grades began to slip, and I started to doubt whether I was cut out for the rigors and stress of a science-based curriculum and career. However, I was incredibly passionate about pharmacy and knew I had to find a way to better manage my mental health in order to achieve my goals. With the support of my family, I decided to meet with a counselor at my university's student wellness center. I was hesitant at first, but it ended up being one of the best decisions I have made. My counselor helped me implement coping strategies to better manage my anxiety symptoms and connected me with a psychiatrist who prescribed medication. I also reached out to my professors to discuss my struggles, and they were incredibly understanding and accommodating. In addition to seeking professional help, I began practicing daily meditation and yoga, which have been instrumental in managing my stress levels. I started sleeping and eating better. I also got involved with my university's Active Minds chapter, a student-run mental health advocacy organization, which has provided me with a sense of community and purpose outside of my pharmacy pursuits. It has been a year since I committed to prioritizing my mental health, and the difference has been night and day. It all started with a couple immigrating to the USA from Ghana, looking for a better life. They settled in the New York area, moved back and forth between there and New Jersey, and gave birth to their first son. Fast forward 17 years, I reflect on my childhood background and all the challenges I have surpassed and continue to surpass. I started life in New York, went to Ghana as a child at 1/2 years old, and returned at two years old, only speaking Twi (the local dialect). I began Head-Start speaking no English but slowly accommodated to the language. Due to English being my second language, I strengthened my cognitive abilities. Continuing, I attended a chartered elementary school excelling in math and sciences. At the age of 8, I began learning the piano. My parents would drive me from Paterson, New Jersey, to Nyack, New York, for about 45 minutes, wait for an hour for my lesson and then come back. The excellent support from my parents allowed me to excel in piano, and within four years, I moved into playing by ear, and now I expand into other instruments by ear in my free time, such as drums, bass, acoustic guitar, etc. Before I started playing by ear, my father became a pastor, and his first "station" was a church branch in Seattle, WA. Here, I began studying audio-visual. And when I was in the 8th grade, we had to move to another church here in Tampa, Florida. It was also another significant curriculum change for me regarding my skill level. I chose a decent middle school and wished I had chosen something that challenged me more. But, I am thankful for the school I went to and the people it exposed me to because those two people are still my closest friends now, and we are graduating with our IB diplomas. Rewinding to the year of 9th grade, my interest in audio-visual increased, and I began volunteering at my church as a helper for the lead. Not knowing one day, I would be the lead and make sure everything runs smoothly. One of my expectations is that I do everything I do with maximum effort regardless of whether I like it. And this indeed translated to the church. During this time, I started weightlifting, and my mindset about hard work changed utterly. I believe this was the turning point in my life: the 3rd quarter of my first year right before Covid. I used to think that people owed me for the work I put in, I believed that I would get a trophy just for trying, but that certainly is not the case. One day I was surfing YouTube, I came across a Ted Talk by Israel Whitley titled, "Hard work, works." He talks about his personal life and his mantra, "Hard work, works." when life gets tough for him. I brought this back to myself and decided to improve myself by 1% daily because consistency is always the best. I aim to learn a new skill aside from audio-visual here, progress in my life 1% a day, and drive others to do the same.
