As a 17-year-old black man, I have always faced challenges in the classroom. Up until my high school years, I attended predominantly white schools. I was one of the smarter kids because my mother and father always told me not to let my skin color nor background define me. I headed their advice, and I got through elementary school, middle school, and high school with mostly all As. I've always prided myself on being persistent with my studies, competitive in every activity, and hard-working in all my athletic careers. I will continue not to be intimidated by others for being an African-American, coming from a low-income household, or attempting to go to college. I plan on increasing the diversity in the computer science world. My oldest brother inspired and influenced my decision to pursue a computer science degree, but he also opened my eyes to the serious lack of diversity in the tech world. 66.1% White, 25% Asian, and 5.2% Hispanic or Latino. Blacks only make up 1% of the workers. I want to change this statistic because I have several African-American friends who intend on going into the Computer Science field, both male and female. All of which are just as bright and hardworking as I am. As I got older, I started to see why workplace diversity was so important. A business has zero control over who needs its services, but they need a wide variety of employees who can relate to the customer. Workplace diversity ensures a higher chance for customers or clients to be satisfied. With individuals from different backgrounds, a company can use different points of view to find the best solution. Better solutions will lead to more satisfied customers. In turn, the company will make higher profits and grow even more. As many people are aware college can be rather expensive, especially ones with exceptional computer science programs. A few colleges that are on my dream school wishlist are Tuskegee University, Morehouse College, and Alabama A&M University. Both Morehouse College and Tuskegee University are on the more expensive side. However, with my 4.3 GPA and 25 ACT score, I can hopefully secure a partial scholarship from either school. It would truly be a blessing, and the opportunity to continue my education at such prestigious universities. My oldest brother inspired and influenced my decision to pursue a computer science degree. He is an excellent role model who possesses a brilliant mind. When he was in high school he developed games so I and my other siblings could play. This was mind-blowing to me at the time and made me want to follow in his footsteps. Another reason I'd like a computer science degree is that computers and technology are the future. If I obtain this particular degree, I should always have a secure job. I wholeheartedly believe computers and technology are the future of the world. Therefore, I plan on majoring in Computer Science in college. Earning this degree will open so many doors for me. System Admin and cybersecurity are my dream jobs, and both career fields are extremely lucrative careers that will allow me to live comfortably, travel the world, and learn new skills that'll allow me to further my savviness in my respective field. I also would like to earn my public trust, secret, and top secret clearances. These will allow me to do contract work on military bases in various overseas countries. While working overseas, your income will be tax-free. This will allow me to work for about 25 years and then retire to pursue a second career involving football. I believe that I am the ideal candidate for this scholarship because I'm a hard-working, intelligent, and competitive person. Not only am I competitive on the field or court, but I am also highly competitive in the classroom. With my 4.3 GPA, I am on track to be my graduating class's Valedictorian. Another reason why I feel that I'm the best candidate is that I possess top-tier leadership qualities. I am the President of our school's Mu Alpha Theta math organization, and I'm the Vice President of the Senior class.
